My line including spaces is 65 characters. I've heard that not counting spaces
takes away over 35% of your line count. I believe it too because you have at least 15 or so spaces on each line that you type. Use your first sentence up top as an example; you had 77 char and 21 spaces - in that line that would be a little less than 30% of your characters that you didn't get paid for. I don't think it's worth it and wouldn't want to work without getting credit for my spaces.
Yes, it means without spaces.

A gross line is anything on a line is a line. A line set at 65 characters means it sm
has 1-inch margins on each side. The maximum number of characters on that line would be 65 and that includes spaces. If there is 1 character on that line it is a line.
A standard 65-character line usually consists of 65 characters with spaces unless, of course, the employer does not pay for spaces and then it would be 65-characters without spaces.
Probably means chars. AND spaces, but possibly not extra spcs

Yes if gross line or 65 character line with spaces....Good Deal!!! nm

Gross line means anything on a line is counted as a line.
You can get an idea in the difference using documents you have already created, assuming you're working in Word. Simply open a document and check the properties. Click on the statistics tab and you will see the number of lines as well as characters with and without spaces. If you're currently getting paid by the line and a line is 65-characters with spaces, do the math and see how that number of lines compares with the number of lines in your stats.
One thing to keep in mind: if you have a blank line between paragraphs, instead of hitting the enter key twice, format your document to give the appearance of blank lines between paragraphs.

Gross line count without spaces?
I've been corresponding with an MTSO, and she tells me that she pays gross line without spaces. Is there such a thing? I have both Abacus and MPCount, and neither of those programs has an option to count gross lines without spaces. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

I charge by 65-char line with spaces...sm
The two accounts I've worked on wanted 0.5 inch margins on both sides. One of the accounts wants 10-point Times. The other wants 12-point Times. They want the margins so big because they are trying to save on their paper costs, because the sticky back paper (I think that's what they use) is apparently quite expensive. I send the documents via e-mail for them to print on their own. Anyway, charging for a 65-character line with spaces nets me more than a gross line because of the margins, font, and typeface. Try it with your line counter. I have one built into my Instant Text (which I don't use for invoices) and SylCount. Both of them show that the gross line is quite a bit less when the margins are this big.
Why not charge for spaces? You type 'em like you type a letter or number!
In Word you take the line count with spaces SM
and divide it by 65. That will give you your line count. So, if my report had 11,700 characters with spaces, that would equal 180 lines. Multiple 180 lines x. 0.11 (your cost per line) and that would equal $19.80 for that particular report.
Good luck!

10 cents/line 65 char. w/spaces,
Small company (about 7 of us, I'm the only part-timer) Acute care, mix of dictators, 1 year part-time experience.
I think it is a 65 character line without spaces but doesnt that mean you have to type a lot more to
get your lines in so you really arent making 9.5 cpl in fact right. I am not sure I understand when you dont get paid for spaces how much you really lose from that. Is it 20% a report or what percentage do you lose. If a report is 100 lines with spaces then what do you really get paid for on those 100 lines without spaces. I think that is what I mean. I am just tring to figure out how much longer you have to work to get your lines in at 1000 lines a day without spaces versus 1000 lines a day with spaces. Seems it would take quite a bit longer.
Both 65 characters per line -- one counts spaces, one doesn't NM

Do the math. I am figuring on a 65 character line with spaces. SM
Getting credit for headers and footers or not, doesn't make much difference in the math. It's simply not possible. Even if you figure she gets 10 free lines per report for headers and footers, she still would have to type 300 lph for 10 hours a day and her hands would virtually never have to leave the keyboard!
Her pants are on fire!
I was referring to gross 65 character per line with spaces, sm
but again, it was very grueling, but possible. Granted, I had no life besides the keyboard.

I think it means any line no matter what length.

What the heck does getting paid by a 55 black character line?? Does this mean without spaces and doe
You just never know if this is a trick to somehow rip you off of lines. I am just very skeptic of it since I have never heard of anyone using this formula before.
depends if includes headers, spaces, one or the other, character line, etc.

don't be afraid that a faint line means you will have problems --
irrelevant as compared to hCG levels. Of course it would be faint, being so early, but I would not expect you to have high hCG levels right now. So don't be scared by what some posters have put in their emails regarding the faint line. I had several miscarriages - so I know that fear! Just try to relax and for Pete's sake, let us know!

It means one MTSO offering to pay you 3, 4 or 5 cents/line less for the same work you do at another!
It probably means you're not Indian and won't work for 2 cents a line.

10 cpl without spaces equals to how many cpl with spaces?
Spaces versus no spaces....
Can someone tell me how big of a difference it makes if a company pays for spaces versus no spaces. I have only every been paid without spaces. I have been offered a position that pays for spaces, but the cpl is less than I am making now. I am not sure if getting paid for spaces will make up for the pay cut. DQS no spaces? Are you sure?
Are you sure DQS does not count spaces? When I first started, I took a report and manually counted each and every character, space, return, etc, and found that the lines count I was given for the report matched (rounded up) my manual count. Even now, I copy and past every single report to Word Perfect (which does not count spaces on my version), and DQS always exceeds my Word Perfect character count by a bunch, so I figure I am not being cheated. Take a medium size report, print it, and try counting manually and see what you think.
I know they don't pay for spaces
So tell me why when one day I did 800 lines and then 3 days later it shows I did 670 lines when I actually did 800 lines. The 800 lines is without spaces, headers, footers. So did those lines magically disappear? This happens to me weekly.
spaces
LOL. I think we need to transcribe a few reports without spaces..heck, let those being paid hourly fill the spaces in.

anycompanypettyenoughtonotcountspacesisacompanytostayawayfrom. Who'spocketdoyouthinkthe$forthespacesislining? Quite frankly, I've been a med trans for nearly 30 years and I'm so damned tired of watching big business cut into our means of living. How did all this start anyways? Used to be in the old days that we were all just ICers looking to make a living, and we did in fact make a decent living. Then came the introduction of nationals and everyone ran to them thinking they'd be making BIG money.......Now the nationals are in place and their CEOs are making the bucks we thought we'd get a piece of. Wish there were a way of reversing this.
Spaces
She's lying. MQ does NOT PAY FOR SPACES. They treat their transcriptionists like crap. I found this out and left them. I found it out for a fact.... They do NOT PAY FOR SPACES. They have started this "trend" and other companies have begun to follow suit. They make me physically ill.
Spaces
Been there 2-1/2 months. Love it. Plenty of work.
Issue: Spaces. Recruiter said no spaces. Trainer said no spaces.
On the line count screen, clicked on one of my reports, then had an option to look at payroll stuff on it, so I did. It added up not only every single character I typed but spaces AND carriage returns (I had 719 spaces and 56 carriage returns) and used that number divided by 65 for my line count. NO KIDDING. I am surprised.
Who knew?! I'm excited!
spaces
Was this on DQS? And could you give more detail on how you did this (i.e., what exactly did you click on to get this info?). Thanks!
spaces
I was told years ago that I was not paid for spaces on the account that I was on, but some accounts were. It depended upon how it was set up when they won the account. I think that's why there are some who are and some who are not, thus the confusion. The only way to know is to manually count your lines and compare them to what the system counts.
