Any first year terminology student wouldn't have to ask about these elementary MT words. It's a cheater trying to pass a test she is in no way qualified to be taking.

True, you can test without a pedal but it sucks and if you are newbie
trying to test for your first jobs, doing it without a pedal is going to really be difficult! Plus, you have to consider the first job she gets probably won't be the last and she'll probably be testing again in the future and that USB pedal will pay for itself in the long run.
Personally, I think a USB foot pedal is a very good investment and I've always had need for one. Down the road, you can buy one of the 9-pin or 15-pin pedals if you find a job that requires one, but the future is USB. You'd be hard pressed to go out and buy a brand new computer that would even have a 9-pin or 15-pin port. I'm just saying...
P.S. You can get on ebay and find pedals and headsets for pretty good prices. I got my USB Infinity off of ebay and paid $30 for it and my Koss DC-10 headset for $20.

great (remember, the amount the client is paying is there), if about 1/2 goes to the service then that leaves a little less than 9 cpl. It's okay money, but I also think this is IC work and if so, it's not that great a deal.
I don't know for a fact the service is taking 1/2; I am assuming that--they have overhead to pay for.

As for the class, it has to be the same company that I suffered and friznazzled in for all of 4 hours, with a raging fever, droning in and out of consciousness - not from the fever, but from the Barbie on my end. Sounded like Mrs. Rogers on speed. And she kept attempting comedy - to which all my dutiful bunny classmates laughed and laughed. Except... they did so by clicking a LAUGH icon, or they would hit the CLAP icon. I was so looking for the VOMIT icon, but, alas, there was none. I couldn't take it, and after 4 hours, I hit the EXIT DOOR icon really quickly, heard it slam shut, saw my name disappear, and that was the end of my career at THAT company. Ended before it started. Took me a LONG TIME to saw off the ball and chain that they had included in with the computer - the one to chain myself to the desk. I sawed it off, signed back on and hit the CLAPPING icon. I was free...Do you think I'd be on their infamous REHIRE list??

that since the company I now work for has their own Voice Monitor I doubt I would be able to transfer reports to a system like Gear Player.
It's a test in progress to measure what MTs know and what type of test to give for the SM
different levels of MTs. It's over $90. That's a lot of money to pay to someone who is giving these tests for research as to what type of testing should be done for the different levels of MT. The AAMT will probably take the results and make a test that they can give in India or the Phillipines or some other foreign country.

I was skeptical above when I read the responses to "How much have you made so far with the year half over". Awfully amazing how much money they claim (maybe overestimate) they make -- equivalent of full-time income with how much time they take off for their kids or "life". There was an allusion to the truth about the MT who said she is a second paycheck to her husband MBA. But I suspect you are the honest one, stating that it isn't the money. It certainly isn't the virtually non-existent benefits.

you have power from your longevity that they feel threatened by. The administrator may feel glad that you are leaving so they can finally gain more personal control.
This does not mean you should feel bad, though. Change is good, so you have everything to gain, but so do they. I would not begrudge them the feeling, though. I always try to wish the best for those that I leave behind.

$13/hr is ridiculously low. I suspect SM
it's some program where they get you cheaply, sharpen your skills by giving feedback on your work (mentoring) and then turn you loose. Industry standard is around 150 lines per hour. If you did that, that's a little over 8.5 cpl. BUT if you type 175 lines an hour for $13/hr, you are typing for a little under 7.5 cpl. As you get better and more used to the dictators under this "training program," you will actually be working for less money, see?

Why do you suspect a pulmonary embolism? I dounbt tht you wiklk be able to cough it up. Are you producing some blood when coughing?
It might just be some mucus or phlegm that you cannot lodged in you lungs.

Run the scanner to see if the keylogger is installed on your computer or your work server. If nothing else, you don't want anyone getting your personal information or the medical records you are typing.
I am not sure if Lavasoft's AdAware or Spybot Search and Destroy will remove this keylogger, but both are free to download.
Just found out that the suspect's ex wife--sm
is providing an alibi for him, saying that he was with her in Alabama at the time of JonBenets death and that he only knew certain things about the case because he did alot of research on it, as well as another case in California. Why would he confess to it, if he did not do it? and why would she, the ex, defend him?

From what I saw on the news, he confessed to things that the public was never told about and that only the police knew. Also, I was happy to hear that before Patsy Ramsey died she actually knew this person was a suspect so she could also find some peace.

When VR gets worse over time, I suspect it has to do with
new MTs, Indian MTs, and those MTs who don't really give a crap about "training" VR. When it's not "trained" correctly, it just gets worse. IMO, there's no way to uniformly constantly train it, or for the physicians to ever put forth the proper effort needed to make VR work. It's a losing battle & the only purpose it's serving right now is to severely cut our pay & decrease patient safety. VR needs to go away.

Since it's a new platform, it's a new problem that probably a lot of companies are just waking up to. My sympathies for people who find themselves effectively "forced" to use it as it apparently is now.
With serious compatibility issues with common brands of the Expanders that have become vital to so many of us, at this point I would not apply to a company using it, and I suspect few other good experienced transcriptionists reading about it would either. This seems such a grave flaw that it will have to be repaired, or this platform will end up a dead end used by only a few institutions.
How about contacting the company that developed the platform directly for answers and fixes? Also the developer of your own expander, who must be well aware of the issues Chartscript raises for them. The ShortHand tech guy (not my own MTSO techs!) fixed me up promptly when I was put on eScription and developed glitches. Best wishes with this.

I just saw some down the street from me, it was yellow with black letters saying "CAUTION".
There is a tape
and available at most Home Depot or Lowe's stores. Bright yellow with black lettering. Used it on our home when we had a major disaster so no one would fall in major holes in our yard. Worked well.

A few years ago I was shopping for Halloween goods and in a store like I-Party they have that tape for Halloween - try one of those stores. I bought some years ago for a mummy and coffin for front yard. Just an idea.

The one I used did not use tape
Sorry, I don't remember make or model, it was a while ago. But I would dial into the hospital's dictation system. That was where the voice files were stored. I had to have a dedicated phone line with unlimited long distance for the C-phone.

You might lose a bit of dictation where you are taping it together, but I was usually able to salvage most of it. Good luck! :)

Tape erase
A lot of people also have disabled the erasing mechanism so that tapes cannot accidentally be erased and have to manually erase them. I have always done that to prevent it after my first accidental erasure. Other than allowing the tape to play forward without background noise, to tape over what is there, no answers here and have been using tapes for 15+ years. A manual eraser cost is cheap.

You might wish to invest in a tape eraser; the one I have is from a company by the name of Geneva. The device consists of some strontium-ferrite magnets in a housing; just pass the tape through the housing and it is erased. The part number and description are as follows:

Do you have a tape transcriber, or does it have to be
voice files? I have some practice dictation minicassette tapes here that I'd be willing to send you. As for the voice files, you could try Google searching. I typed in "medical transcription" practice sound files download but don't really have time to search through the results. I don't even know if there's anything out there.

I found great, low-cost software that allows you to convert tapes to digital files (MP3, WAV, WMA, etc.). Check out www.dak.com ! Your PC needs a sound card and a line-in connection (usually next to your line out to plug in your headset or speakers), as well as a tape player and an actual line that plugs from your PC line-in to your tape player. Think they call that line a male-to-male or male-to-female or something like that (got my line from www.martelelectronics.com). Use Dak to convert your music cassettes, too. Hope this helps!
P.S., I'm an MT, not from DAK 
The end of the tape becomes detached
from the spool and is no longer winding outside the case/housing. It is all wound on one spool. Our office manager has been able to repair some by taking the tape apart and reattaching to the spool, so we can get some of the info off of it, but by handling the tape, etc. it distorts it to where we can't hear some of what was dictated and we lose some notes. Thanks! I will suggest one of those brands.
I never got rid of my tape-player or my -sm
typewriter. You just never know what sort of disaster could come up in the future, where those things would be a real life-saver. And amazingly, PCs never increased my daily work output. It actually DECREASED a bit once we went to PCs.

I had that happen quite a few times - take a very small piece of scotch tape and splice the pieces together- cut the scotch tape as narrow as the cassette tape is so that it will line up on the rollers. You will lose the dictation at that spot - probably a sentence or so - but it's better than nothing. On mine, I had to pry open the cassette case because the ends were inside. If you end up having to do that, pry it open carefully. Hope this helps.

Try putting a little scotch tape over the letters. You can rewrite them with a fine sharpie.

I love it! It is so cut and dry. I throw the tape in and start typing. You may save time so people think by going digital, but it takes time to upload and download voice files. I just find that throwing the tape and typing is just simple! Of course, I'm a simple person.
In answer to your question, yes I think you may have something there as the tape doctors do not want to go digital because they like doing things simply. They don't want a lot of hassle, and yes, I do believe there are physicians that still like the old method. Some do not think that digital is very user friendly.
The other problem with digital is there needs to be someone in the office doing the uploading, which mean the physician is paying them to do that. With the tape, the doctor puts it in a folder with his patient list at the end of the day, and then leaves it for me. The only thing required by the office staff is the copying and mailing when I bring the work back usually anywhere from 3-4 days later. They do not require 24-hour turnaround, which is great. But, if they do need a note, which happens very rarely, I can simply fax it over to the office.
I am quite content with my tape accounts and the other thing I like is the networking. I can network with the office staff and feel like a movie star since they don't see me every day. They usually stop what they are doing for a friendly quick chat, which is very nice. I have business cards that I carry just in case someone mentions to me that so and so is looking for a transcriptionist.

mangled tape
I was able to take the cassette apart to get the tape inside unmangled, but now I'm trying to figure out how to roll it back up as tight as I can so it doesn't happen again, and I don't know how to do that. I have a few feet of tape hanging out and I can't roll it tight by hand unless I want to spend days on it, and it still may night be tight enough around the spool. The tape is intact so I don't think I need any splicing. I'm think right now this is just ridiculous that I'm having to do this and yes, the doctor is technotarded. He kept erasing his dictation accidentally on the digital recorder so went back to using cassette tapes.

A company I found on the web called audio-restoration.com repaired a tape for me. The cost was $25.00. The doctor's office paid for it because it beat having to redictate 1-1/2 hours of dictation. It took about five days to get the tape back.
