I stopped my HRT when studies showed it did not prevent osteoporosis. sm

In Reply to: Question about taking HRT. sm - MT
I have osteoporosis. The govt halted a study on HRT as the women involved had more heart problems than those on the placebo. Too scary for me. In addition, my hair was falling out excessively. Since I have been off it, my hair is back to normal, but the flashes have come back. Even more repulsive to me was when I found out that the HRT I was on came from the urine of pregnant mares that were impregnated just to get the HRT ingredients, then the colts were destroyed. No way. There are over-the-counter remedies for hot flashes, but now they claim that black cohosh causes liver cirrhosis. So, I'm not taking anything.

HRT protects against osteoporosis. sm
You'll get hot flashes, all right, and probably the mood swings. There is some great information pro and con online about HRT, just Google. IVillage might help.

Prevent CTS
I am not sure if CTS is something you can get disability for, its certainly worth a try if you have disability insurance via your employer. To prevent CTS however I recommend that you get a chair and keyboard tray that combine to put your elbows at right angles, you need to make sure that your wrists make a straight line (you want minial wrist flexion, and no ulnar or radial flexion). I have found that a split keyboard (MS Natural old style is my favorite). There are more expensive ones, but this is what I use and my pain has been gone.
On another note, a lumbar pillow has made vast differences for my back.
WARNING to those trying to PREVENT it.....
A few years ago my daughter's 2nd grade class kept having a lice problem. My daughter never showed any signs of it BUT one day she came home and told me her 2 best friends, who she played with and sat by, were sent home with it. So I panicked and did the stuff in her hair just to get anything that (in my mind) was probably there.
Well, my daughter had a neurologic reaction to the RID or whatever I used. Her one arm was shaking, it was scary. I took her to the ED and the doc made me feel about 1 inch tall. He said "WHY WOULD YOU PUT IT ON HER IF SHE DIDN'T HAVE LICE???"
I explained but he said people just don't get it, this stuff is basically a PESTICIDE.
So if your child has it then use it, but PLEASE don't just use it to keep him/her "clean" as a measure to prevent it. Take it from a ~guilt-ridden~ mother.
They just showed it about 5 minutes ago
They said Ryan gave the wrong number to punch when people called in and that they also heard he'd had two offers from well-known bands, including Van Halen.
Editscript has some way to prevent that too.
I don't know how it works though.
There are all kinds of ways to prevent
a pregnancy, not the least is abstinence. Why people are so irresponsible is beyond me and then an innocent life will suffer because of her stupidity.
last nite on TV they showed a psychic's....sm
I didn't think it was Karr, UNTIL they showed on CNN last night a picture/drawing from a psychic from 1996-1997 and they held the drawing up next to Karr's picture last night and they look identical.
Too bad it took 10 years to bust this case open
I think it is kind of odd that this survey showed
posts were on here this morning telling people they'd pay $5.00 for every e-mail address you sell them. I'd be very careful when you are dropping your e-mail address. The survey does not seem to have any company name or anyone's name attached to it for that matter.
They definitely need to go digital, which may prevent hiring another MT

During the Packers game they showed
current temperatures around the world. Greenland, Moscow, Alaska were all around 20 degrees. In Greenbay, WI, it was -2 degrees! Funny.
Update. MRI was normal hip. only showed
ovarian cysts for which I now have to go see the gynecologist.

Sleep studies? sm
Can you make any money on sleep studies? Any good reference websites or sample reports I can get. Any info appreciated. TIA

cell phones are perfectly safe to use in non-clinical areas, such as waiting rooms and hallways. Just Google hospitals "cell phones". Tons of info.

Here is a good web site for sleep studies. When I did them, I found them to be pretty easy. I think I added the link below too. But here it is again:

Help Radiology MTs! How many studies do you do in day?
I've been wondering, on an average 8 hour day....how many reports do you get done? I'm not really talking very specialized reports, just MRIs, X-rays, US, CTs.
I've been doing rads for a little while now but still can't get a solid idea of how many I should be doing. Every once in a while I'll get a 3-5 min nuke med report but overall most of the reports are about 1-2 min (or less) with great dictators. When I ask my lead, she just tells me "as many as I can."
I'm the kind of person that can't just trot along....I need to have a goal of some sort and the other MTs on this account don't want to share their stats (greedy, I think, since I know they make more than I do and they don't want me "taking" any work from them even though there's more than enough to go around).
Help Radiology MTs! How many studies do you do in day?
I have been typing radiology reports for 30 years. I type 10 to 20 most of the time. Have typed less and can type more depending on the doctor. Some docs are long winded and every report is 15+ lines even for chest x-rays while others can be one-liners. Also depends on if you can type continuously or have to stop typing to listen because they are not speaking properly into the microphone. I would say average is about 17 or 18. What most of us focus on I think is how many lines an hour. 150 to 200 is good for me, which if you make 10 cents a line is $15 to $20 an hour. I make a little more than that. Good Luck to ya!
you are talking about 10-20 studies sm
per hour correct? Its been awhile since I did radiology and the reports have gotten a lot longer, but most of the time 125-150 reports a day.
Ray Nagin is the one who showed true compassion
Tell it like it is..Thank you. So much ragging on the Mayor of New Orleans, please, point the finger where it belongs. This disaster could not have been taken care of by local govt alone. We needed the feds to step in. The president was on the TV two days before the hurricane warning it was gonna be a bad one. Well, if we all knew that, there should have been planes and ships already loaded up and ready to move down to the gulf the minute the storm abated. If anyone is showing true compassion, it is Rag Nagin. If you ask me, FEMA did not do it's job.
Elliott needs to be with his very sick Mom. Being the Idol would prevent that. sm
Besides, from what he said about AI being a "steppingstone," he's probably been contacted by someone big. He's going to make it, no matter what. I think being the Idol at this time would be too much for his personal life. His mother needs him now, and he knows it.

It seems to me I had to change a preference on Shorthand to prevent that...
but it's been so long ago I can't remember...I think it had something to do about the playback speed. You should mess around with it.
To change Operation Preferences
Choosing "Preferences" from the File menu brings up the Preferences Dialog Box. Click on the Operation tab to access Operation Preferences.
Pause
Use this option to add a delay (in milliseconds; 1000 msec = 1 second) after a specified number of keystrokes. This option is useful if you find that ShortHand is playing back text too fast for the target application to handle.
Verify Target Window Receives Keystroke
When this option is checked, Shorthand waits for a keystroke to be properly received by the target window before playing back the next keystroke; this prevents Shorthand from accidentally overrwriting text in another window. The disadvantage is that, on some systems, this could result in very poor playback performance. Unchecking this box causes Shorthand to playback Keystrokes at maximum speed without verifying if the keystrokes reach their intended target. If you experience lost or transposed keystrokes, use the Pause option above to slow down Shorthand.

Bachelors of General Studies
Summa cum laude, thank you very much.
Long, complicated story. Basically, I'm a clinical year short of a Clinical Laboratory Science degree, but I won't go back and pursue it barring losing my husband. Also, if I'd have thought more carefully when I switched out of the CLS program, I was only 3 or 4 classes short of a B.A. in psychology. Oh, well. What I ended up with is essentially a liberal arts degree with lots and lots of science classes and lots of psychology classes and a smattering of language studies.
Like some of the other posters, my ultimate goal is to get into P.A. school once my youngest kiddos are school age. I think I'm too old for med school now, but it raises my hopes to see the post below. Being a transcriptionist pays the bills, but some days I do kinda get upset with myself. Here I am doing the same thing I went to school not to do any more. Sigh...
MTing is not bad, but I just don't get enough people contact, and it certainly doesn't have a lot of money or prestige associated with it. Sigh.. again. Ah, well. It works for my family right now.
No, there are a bunch of studies out there indicating that
one drink per day of beer or wine is actually good for you.

There are numerous studies presently
taking place concerning this relatively new medication. Below is a single example of Fosamax prescribing from the "norm." If I were typing that report, I would type it verbatim and not flag/question the physician's dictation.
FOSAMAX DOSING
The prevention dose is 5 mg daily, the treatment dose is 10 mg daily. Alendronate should be continued indefinitely. Although discontinuation of the alendronate does not result in the rapid bone loss seen with HRT discontinuation, a gradual decline does occur, so some maintenance therapy should be utilized. The dosing may be modified once optimal bone mass is restored. One could then consider the 10 mg dose to the 5 mg prevention dose daily, or perhaps to 10 mg every other day. A once weekly dose of 70 mg or a twice-weekly dose of 35 mg is presently being evaluated as an alternative-dosing regimen but has not yet been approved. (Study results pending).

Helpful reference for ops and studies
Found this excellent resource for ops - sharing with all.
No problem with the anger the OP showed towards home-schooling?
I didn't spew venom, only pointed out the obvious, kids are kids are kids. Anybody who thinks that people home-school their children to keep them away from "bad kids" is greatly mistaken. The minority may be for that reason. The majority have real reasons for their conviction to home-school.
Some people choose to home-school because their kids are the bad kids. Some people are forced into home-schooling bad kids by the public schools who can't handle them. It does happen, I've personally witnessed a friend being put through exactly that.
But, thanks for pointing out my venom (it was not intended as such) and thanks for the prayers.
How do you prevent them? EZ! Tell you husband to splurge on a Brazilian Wax for Mother's Day!!!!
That's how you prevent them!

Excuse me, but the results that I got back this morning that showed that I got wrong were
Sentences that she said were not fragmented, were. Sentences that she said were complete were run on. And, one sentence CLEARLY required comma usage and she said I was wrong.
I am one of those MTs who knows what she is doing and has done well over the last 20 years. The only reason I am applying for work is because I was laid off with several others right before Christmas. I take pride in saying that I know what I am doing!
My daughter teaches social studies and science.
She works the after-school program at her school for extra money, and an occasional Saturday school (also extra money). She has also signed up to teach summer school, and may do some private tutoring as well.
Just some ideas for you.
I have been doing MT for about 4 years now, and average about $10 an hour at 7 cents per line (no raise since I started). There is a tremendous learning curve, I did not feel productive and competent at all for the first couple of years. I got my certificate from the local community college. They offered night classes for the beginner course, then an on-line advanced course. I should point out that a certificate from any school does not make you a CMT (certified medical transcriptionist). For that you have to pass the test given by AAMT, and as I recall you cannot test until you have 2 years of experience.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
Help on the drug board--osteoporosis drug?

Re QA, has anyone stopped
looking at their edited reports? I simply cannot do it anymore. For 18 years I have been transcribing medical reports, and the more I type the worse QA seems to think I am. It is to the point I cannot bear to look at my reports anymore...it is crazy with tiny little errors and it only makes me sick, literally. Then if I want to take 1/2 hour out of my time I can relisten to all my reports, and 8 out of 10 times it is a 50-50 chance of who is right but of course it is always the editor. I get through the 'grunt' work, piecing together a puzzle from some horrendous dictator, with a 99% completed report, send to QA for 1 blank, and it comes back with 3 or 4 ridiculous noncritical errors which matter nothing to the content of the report, and all because someone was able to 'listen' against my already typed report (aww, that is so hard!) and found 'is' where it is totally questionably there or not, and I am sick of fighting it anymore. I have spent WAY TOO MUCH time worrying about this ridiculous stuff. What I want to know is: Does anyone else not look anymore, and how much can it hurt. There are editors who just want to mark off for something, anything, and make a name for themselves it seems even at the expense of ruining someone's QA score. How about I just stop looking and let a manager fire me one day because my score is down...who cares anymore. I will not even respond to posts with the attitude that we need to provide quality to the customers blah blah blah - hey, if hospitals wanted quality the work would NOT be going overseas to ESL transcriptionists in the very first place, nor would capitation be in place and all the woes that has brought, nor would our personal information be 'out there' floating around so some day it can be breached. That argument is totally lost on me. American MTs get constant abuse from not only the dictators but again also from editors, all the while reports come back from India or elsewhere with never a care or problem from hospitals at their quality or errors...oh it is a big joke all the time how many errors they make but that is okay, that is acceptable for them. For us - look out, you are constantly harassed and repeatedly tormented on a daily basis over this. It is not right, it just is not right.
I stopped letting them do that.
Too many times they had inexperienced techs who messed everything up. Once my computer crashed because of what they did. Another time, another company, they deleted a program and nothing would work right. Just because they say they are a computer tech does not mean they know anything. Many do not even have a certificate, just a litle on the job training.
That was a while ago and they stopped docking pay.

I have a question. How do you have 2 list open at the same time? I can merge 2 list but I don't know or see a way to have 2 separate list open.
p.s. This is a work computer, not my PC, so the software may or may not be the same.
They stopped making those back around
1914. But hope you find one anyway! Main thing is be happy with yourself and your life. Funny thing is years ago my son wanted a fish tank, so we kept upgrading to larger sizes, going from 5 gallon, to 10 to 35 and then 40 gallon. At that point, I told my son, "I will not get a larger tank because I will not get married just to have a man around to carry that ding-dong tank!!" That is the way I live my life; what I can handle and what makes me happy and trying not to have to depend on a DH to help. Maybe one day, I'll find a good man just to hang around with. Have a beautiful day!!

believe me, outsourcing out of the country will be stopped soon. sm
Do you know how many U.S. doctors or clinics who contract with a US transcription co. who outsources actually know their patient's confidentiality records are leaving the country? ...very few. These docs are clueless, not by their own fault, but by the deceiving company who represents themself as a U.S. based co. (which may be true). However, they fail to "share the info. with the doc" informing them "by the way, we send your dictation to India". This info. IMO has just started to surface for access by physicians. If HIPAA passes the strict regulations on patient confidentiality, you don't think there's gonna be a big crack-down on this? U.S. MT's and honest US based transcription companies need to ride the bumps in the road now because things will get better for us. We are not talking about outsourcing work to China to sew shirts to bring back to the US dept. stores, we are talking about patient medical records. I was once a small MTSO, and I can say with 100% certainty, I would not take the legal chance of playing with patient medical records by sending them out of the country, not to mention taking jobs away from US MTs. If MTSOs were not outsourcing, our pay scale would go up and you could probably find better employees who were willing to work harder, thus reducing your costs for editing, etc.
I stopped by the office and everyone was way too polite.
The part where she cut off the clinical diagnosis and then typed "love your chest report, great work!" on it was what sent me into a spin.
