Call your local paper and see if they have a route
available in your area. You have to be an early riser and work 7 days a week though. I used to get up at 6:00 to walk. Now I get up at 5:00, walk for one hour every morning with only 65 newspapers, and I make an extra $70 to $80 a week for 7 hours a week.
My sister does 250 papers by car (roadside tubes) and she makes $1000 a month. It takes her 3 hours a day though and she has a full time job, so I think that's a bit much.
Seriously though, papers don't hire kids anymore to deliver because kids just can't or don't want to do it. Besides, who wants their 13-year-old out walking the streets at 5:00 a.m. ?.
No boss, good exercise, good money.
There was an article in our local paper today about
outsourcing (their wording) work to India. The contractors in India are now outsourcing the work to other places in India. They figure if we (the US) can outsource American work to India, why can't they outsource the work also. Your medical info is going to be as private as if you took out a billboard and posted it there.
Article about Spheris in the local paper yesterday...

We have a small local paper that comes weekly in the mail...
and I spend most of my time counting the spelling errors when I read it. The best one was the headline one November that proclaimed - HAPPY THANKGSIVING. Did I mention this is a FREE paper. I would never pay for something like that.
Another one I saw a number of years ago, mirrow instead of mirror. And one time at my old job at a manufacturing plant, they were taking a bus trip to some shopping "outlits."
I am a teacher's kid and stuff like that really bugs me. Good thread by the way!
Just gottah share. I read in our local paper about a 3 y.o.battling neuroblastoma sm
a deadly form of cancer. She has undergone 5 chemo treatments and undergoing major surgery on Friday to remove a lemon-sized tumor on her kidney. This story broke my heart. In the article it read that she will undergo 2 stem cell transplants costing 300,000 to 500,000 a piece and her family needs help. They do have insurance, but they will be stuck with whatever insurance does not cover.
So, I forwarded the article to everyone on my email list (plent of them) along with a note stating that if everyone in the city and surrounding city in which we live just gives 25.00 to 50.00 (those who CAN give, not those who simply can't), then we could take care of this precious girl and family! It's times like this when you see the true nature and heart of a person. I have a sister in law whom 3 years ago wrote me this NASTY email after I sent her and many others a email stating that our soldiers were looking for certain items during the start of the Iraq war. She told me NOT to bother her with such nonsense. How cruel can one be? Anyways, I did not send her this article and I won't let idiots intimidate me when all I want to do is help this poor girl!!
I even went so far as to contacging a local web hosting company asking them for a free website for this little girl so that those all across the country can give to this family. And I also thought it would be a great way for the family to share with family and friends across the globe on Chloe's progress and updates! We'll see.
I am going to contact the familyl (after praying about it) and ask if they mind me doing such a thing! I don't think she has a website.... The story broke my heart and I just feel compelled to DO SOMETHING. I have 3 precious children. The thought of any one of them dying from cancer is too much to even bear! I will keep you updated on what the web hoster(s) say about me wanting them to provide a free Chloe website! Cross your fingers and pray for her too.
boy, do I remember those days
Make an appointment with your doctor asap and explain the situation. Ask for a Rx for Lindane Shampoo. It's more effective than the OTC products, which are also far more dangerous to use over a long period of time. If you are unable to have someone remove the nits, I would recommend using the product every 7-10 days for a couple of months, since that's how often the nits hatch, and within 7-10 days they'll be procreating all your head again.
It is imperative that you speak with the teachers in your child's classrooms and explain the situation to them. With the weather getting colder, coats are going to be thrown on each other and that's how the condition will spread, over and over again, from child to child. A letter also needs to be sent out to all parents about the problem. After that, you have to hope for the best. There's too often a "not my child" attitude which leads to noncompliance. It would take YEARS to finally eradicate the little monsters, despite the fact that you're doing everything you're supposed to do.
Trust me, I know.
I remember those days
I graduated second in my class (Dean's List) in transcription and A&P. However, the real training was on the job. I had one doctor who was very ESL!!!!! I would work for ever on one of his reports, which would end up full of blanks, and I would only have transcribed a very few lines. He was very frustrating. I can remember one day going for a coffee break, coming back to work and sitting in the parking lot crying. I vowed I was not going back into the office, that I was quitting. Then I thought, my husband will absolutely kill me after spending so much money for schooling and training :-). I went back, and 18 years later I am still at it. It gets better!
I remember those days
They used to say you could make $80K/year tax free, but you had to live in a compound ...
I remember those days, too...
While it was a more casual and friendly environment between doctors and the HIM departments, I remember freezing up and getting so nervous when the doctor was standing there dictating live & watching (both about my speed and my accuracy). I only hope they knew I wasn't always that bad, hehe.
Does anyone remember only being allowed to gas up on odd or even days sm
back in the 70s, depending on what number your license plate ended in? brrrrrrr long, long lines
oh i remember the good ol days
I could never stand working with people a straight eight hours a day, i'm not an "on" type of person and not gossipy either. Just not my thing. A lot of backbiting went on and you could just feel the negativity in the air. At home I don't have that. My dog/cat never talk behind my back nor are they fake. They really and truly like me. Just kidding. But I remember those days well, couldnt get out fast enough.
I remember the days of refunds.. Now all we do is pay pay and more pay
Stinks to be us.
LOL @ both legs! I remember those days!

I remember in the old days when you were not hired without
at least 3 to 5 hears working in house - no in house on the job experience? - not considered.
Oh my gosh - I remember those days. sm
I started working at home 18 years ago when my son was born. I would have him in my office with me. He liked the bouncy walker back then. He would sit in it for about an hour bouncing up and down.
I would take him for a long walk and to the playground in the mid morning to tire him out. He would nap for a couple of hours in the afternoon and that's when I did some work. But, I have to tell you, I did most of my work at night when he went to bed. I had him on a strict schedule for napping, meals, bathing, and then bedtime.
Bedtime was 8 p.m. I started work at 8:30 p.m. and was done by 2 a.m. I managed 5-6 hours of sleep a night.
I lived on coffee and any other type of caffeine I could ingest. Not very healthy, but doable.
Back then, I had my own accounts, picking up and delivering tapes, etc. I took him along with me in the morning to deliver and pick up. It was very difficult, but somehow I managed.
It gets more difficult when they are more mobile, around ages 2 to 4. Then at age 5, they go to kindergarten, and you kinda get your work day back.
You know your child better than anyone. You sort of have to schedule your work day around him or her.
IC status worked for me in this situation. I don't think I could have done it as an "employee" type job with a strict work schedule.
Good luck ~ I hope this helped in some little way.
By the way, I still work evenings and night 18 years later, and I have daughter 16.
Hey, Brandi! I remember your stories about those days...
lol! Too funny. Yah, you Transquickers certainly did live on the wild side. I'm sure some still do!
Yeah, some days I do too, until I remember the typewriter.
Then I quit cussing my computer! lol
Hah!!! I remember the days of 2000 lines!
Not with my company...A good day is 1600 lines. Horrible platform. Wish line count was better.
I remember back in my hospital days...
when we had the more personal contact aspect with the docs. The ones who cared could/would actually walk back to where we were and you could ask them questions, have them correct something, etc., or the MR director could tell the heavy ESL docs to enunciate their English better, ha-ha, which sometimes actually worked. Our county coroner would tell us some interesting stories late in the evening. One lady plastic surgeon loved what she did so much, if you asked her a question, she would draw you pictures of what she did. I once handed an awful resident doc my earphones so he could hear what he was dictating; he was so embarrassed he slowed down from then on, so it made a huge difference. For a few years, to get the docs to get their charts done faster, the MR director held a contast; the winning doc would get a free trip somewhere. You would not believe how some of these guys would compete for this prize, cracked us up.
Yeah, those days are gone, but I hope to live to see the work goes back to the local hospital level. A hospital system the next town over to me did post 5 full-time Transcriptionist jobs last fall; I applied, just wanted an interview. I never heard back so I don't know how this panned out. I think I'd apply to return to in-house work if that ever happened. The job was definitely more interesting then.
Do you guys ever feel like just a number? Remember the good old days...
When if you had a problem, you could go straight to the manager and they'd take care of it right away, making you feel secure in your position and important? When I talk to my supervisor, I feel like her main focus is to get off the phone with me asap, being very short with me, and quick to say she will get right on something when in fact she never does. I just feel so remote and always worry about how long i'm going to have a job in the MT field because of how uncaring the supervisors are, not knowing us personally, not having a face to go along with the person, being able to yank us off an account we're comfortable with onto some ungodly thing where our line count goes down to zilch, and having NO control over it. I was never one to work around people because of all the backstabbing that goes on with women in the office, but I would love to have a home office to report to periodically throughout the year, and maybe work in-house a couple times a month, just to put a face with people and not feel like a number that would be easy to dispose of.
OMG I did too!!! Remember the raunchy equipment and "blue belts". People these days should

Buy local. The local stores pay taxes to support your city and state. (SM)
Using online and catalogues does nothing to promote the local economy. We complain about outsourcing and about the big companies gobbling up all the work so the jobs at local hospitals are gone, yet we do the same thing when we buy on ebay, catalog, and these web sites that may be located any place in the world as their primary business location.
I went local. Great local tech support, they know what I do and were able to set it up just for me
:)
30 hours divided by four days equals seven-hour days. Most of us have to work pretty much every day
.
Working 6/hour days, 5 days/week I make
$42,000.00, but the work is there to make more if I want to. I'm in the southeast.
2000 low days, 4000 busy days
Did 43,000 lines last month. 6 doctors.
You can "make a living" if you work 16-hr days, 7 days
and if you rarely buy anything but food and the barest essentials in clothing. My balancing act is so precarious that all it'll take is one of life's little disasters (rent increase, sick pet, major car repair) to pull the rug out from under me. Not a good feeling at all.
550-650 lph on average. Some days more, some days less. It all depends. nm
x
How? By working 12-hr days 7 days/week?
;LKJ
Put it on paper
I was drowning in debt a couple of years ago. I finally bought a book by Dave Ramsey about getting out of debt and I must say, this man is a genius! He also does a radio program daily where he takes calls and gives advice. I now do a budget on paper where EVERY penny is accounted for. It is amazing how much of a difference this has made in my life. No, I don't reuse foil or sandwich bags ... LOL! I have paid off my credit card debt and installment debt. At this point, I'm working on the mortgage. I highly recommend the plan Dave Ramsey pushes for "financial peace" as he refers to it.
I have seen ads in the paper where...
Radiology MTs are paid that per hour. Maybe some of the others are too. I applied at a temp agency to work as an MT and asked for a minimum of $12/hr. I didn't get the job. I was not tested or anything, so I felt maybe they didn't want to pay me the $12/hr.
If you get on with the hospital, not sure if you will eventually be sent home or not, but most hospitals where I live send the MTs home to work. So, maybe try at a hospital near you? However, even though they pay hourly, they have a line count they want you to maintain. I think when they pay hourly, they really stick to the line count minimum to make sure they aren't paying you to do nothing. The minimum line count depends on the hospital.
good luck.
It also says on my paper...
…You may decide to continue working beyond your full retirement age without choosing to receive benefits. If so your benefits will be increased by a certain % between your full retirement age AND age 70. If I did not draw before age 70, I would have an 8% increase in the amount I would get at age 66- whatever that would be, don’t do math.
maybe you put too much paper into it, so that
the printer cannot 'grasp' it, or you put the paper too far away.
Hmm, I have a paper here that I signed that says
they will deduct FICA taxes, pay the employer part of FICA equaling 7.65%, and federal income taxes. It says I will receive a W-2, not a 1099.
FICA is the SS tax. So, if they are holding out federal taxes, FICA, employer part of FICA, then all that is left is state tax...??
Does anyone else get overwhelmed with all the paper
that's constantly thrown at them? I just spent an hour and a half cleaning off my desk. It was covered with mail, books, bills, school papers for all the kids, papers I have to fill out for DH and our oldest, papers to be shredded, stuff I have to do for other people, account specs. This was all just from the past week. I always thought I was a pretty organized person, but this place is a mess.....
What about scrapbook paper?
I know Joann has a big scrapbook paper notebook. It would look cute with a lot of different design/similar color paper hands. We actually did this with a turkey projected and covered the turkey with fall paper. I don't know what your budget is but the notebook is about $10 and you'd probably have a lot left over for other stuff.
I think I missed the ad in the paper that says you must
paint your house a funky color. I'm thinking I missed a huge sale at Home Depot on paint because my neighbors are going crazy with the colors. Yes, I understand home depot and Lowe's screws up paint and you can get the mixed up colors very cheap but geez. My neighborhood is going crazy with weird paint colors on their houses. Two months ago someone painted their house bright green with bright pink trim, then came the peach house with green trim, bright yellow house followed by bright blue house with the leftover yellow trim. New house being built across the street is all burnt orange including the fence. They even painted the driveway burnt orange and not UT vols orange. Now my neighbor is painting hers bright green. It's not a bad neighborhood here in Central Florida and the houses here run from 150s to 300s but these colors are horrendous. I think if I put my house up for sale I won't get an offer because the peach house, green and pink house, and orange house are all on the dead end street I'm on.
Sticky paper
Like I said below I buy my sticky paper through a place that prints up forms. You will need to do some calling to see. It is a little expensive but I provide that in my price. Just do not buy the boxed stuff from Viking or Office Depot or Office Max as they do not not have the perforations on the sides so that when they peel the note it is smaller than the paper and fits on a piece of paper. E-mail me if you have any questions. But if you are in the Seattle area, there are a lot of paper places up there. If you are doing overflow then the main MT should be able to tell you where to get the paper. Also they might provide it as some accounts do. Everyone is different. But CONGRATS -- the first step is the hardest. Knew you could do it. Be sure to ask for lots of examples when you start. Keep me informed. Any questions you can e-mail me. Patti typing without glasses hope don't have many typos.
You can get Sticky paper
You can get sticky paper from Medical Arts Press, get the quick peel that has perforations on the side so it fits on your regular sized paper. It is expensive though, I used to buy the large box, approx $90.00, so if you can get your client to supply it, that would be great. I always had to supply my own.
Sticky Paper
Does any one have any suggestions on a type of paper that can be printed on and then stuck into a patient's chart? I would like to find a lable type to fit in a certain space. Brand names would be helpful. Thank you in advance
Sticky paper
I use an 8 1/2 x 11 label size paper that has about 1/8" inch that peels back on each side so that it is smaller than the paper you place it on. The clinics use it to put the chart notes in the charts. I get it at a form place that makes it. Avery makes 8 1/2 x 11 labels but you have to cut down the sides before you peel back the sheet to place it on the paper and it doesn't have great peel backs either. Call local form places and sometimes they will have perforations 1" or so but I don't like that as you waste a lot when you have to begin another chart note and you have to be sure it is below one of the perforations. Have been using this for 15 years now. Did go with some national companies but the shipping got to be too much. Again, call local paper and form places in your area and see if theymake it. E-mail me wiht specific questions.

Sticky Paper
Hi, I have always used plain computer paper for my reports but have a new doctor who prefers me to use the "sticky" paper. I was wondering if I should charge for the paper, since it is an added cost, and also if anyone knows where to purchase this paper. Thanks.
sticky paper
I have a great supplier Forms & Filing Systems 800-472-0171. Costs about $120 for 1000 sheets. I pass this cost on to my docs.
sticky paper
I'm not sure about the colors. But it is laser quality. It comes in different label sizes. I use a full sheet lable.
Sticky paper
I get mine from a local form company and it comes with 1/4" inch strips on the sides so that when they peel it off to put into the chart the note is smaller than the paper and fits better. I pay $28 per 300 sheets.
Paper version
I don't like having all that "stuck" on one PC just in case they crash. Good luck!
the paper shuffles and
the conversatons chatting to the nurse or, to me even worse, the minutes of absolute DEAD time when there is NOTHING! Although actually it all adds up to the same thing. Wasted time and mney for the MT.
Yes, but TELL him you need paper. Employer

Paper Trail
True True. I have the papertrail and the pay receipts and trail of if it was cashed that go together. Each earning invoice for ICs have pay stub and proof stapled together.
gas, time away from PC, ink, paper
I think 15 is good. When you are away from your desk and delivering, you are essentially not generating income, so. Plus don't forget the INK, it is costly. Better include a notation of extra costs for:
Hunt up reports and reprints (that can really be abused)
If they want a faxed copy stat
if they cannot locate a report and you need to research (TIME) and reprint & INK & PAPER and deliver. No this is not piddly things, it is time, lost income, cost of supplies.
Just like if a patient came back and ask for a quicky relook, they forgot something, after they just left, this is reset up of exam room, find the chart, chart notation, staff time, physician time and they want it for the same price. See what I mean.
If they want a stat report (you are stopping what you are working on to do their STAT report. Indicate the quicker Turn Around Time charges in writing so they don't forget .....(other than the agreed to time)
