I presume you are slowing it down on your player - sm

when you transcribe, if not, obviously try that. If that does not help then either just to the best you can, alert whoever you are sending the work into of the blanks (and why), and just handle it that way. If you just don't want the hassle of them anymore then give them 2 weeks notice that you are dropping them since they cannot seem to follow a simple request and make it so you can turn into them a quality product. With my 1 puny account, I always email them while files have any blanks, and why. I am dealing with the Drs. personal asst. (not the office manager) and she loves that I do this (when I have to), the previous MT did not....just sent it in with the blanks with no heads up or explanation. Good luck!

Starting job using Olympus Player/pedal - does this have a good player with slow down speeds - I do

Until now I have always used company software with player included.  I hate to spend money and find out the player is mickey mouse!!

Thanks- you may e-mail me if you prefer.

Don't presume I am not doing my job
as you don't know what my job entails.  My company does not ask for 100% voice to text and they don't pay me for that either.  I know what you are saying and I know what I would like it to be but I am a  realist and that is how it is in this job.  I don't like it either.

Slowing us down

If one person is getting great line counts, and she goes on vacation, the account may suffer while she's off.  If instead two people are getting mediocre line counts, and one goes on vacation, the account does not take as hard a hit.

A phenomena that easily leads to burnout is being punished for competency by one's employer.  I've run into it in other industries, but it happens here too.  The more you know and the better and faster you are, the more crap work they'll send your way.  If you have a good work ethic and pride yourself on conquering challenges, they'll use it against you by giving you more difficult accounts/jobs, because they know you won't wimp out and complain or quit like others might.  The more efficient I become, the more extra difficult work I get.  The slower people that goof off are rewarded for that with a light easy work load.  Its not very fair, but its certainly been a trend in my experience.

ESL is a particular thorn, because as someone else said, everyone hates to do it.  I have one dictator in particular on one of my secondaries that is just impossible.  Our QA person chides us for not getting him right, sending snotty emails that we must take the time to look up his old reports, and that it doesn't take much time to do so, even though SHE often has to leave the same blanks in the report that I left, because she can't understand him either.  Its a case of the emperor's new clothes - everyone knows this person is impossible, but they think by guilt-tripping us into killing ourselves over each report, somehow they'll get done.  Never, never will they tell the doc HE is the problem and its his own fault his reports are such a mess.  Maybe ONE report doesn't take that much time, but we don't get just one report.  And yes, many reports do take a lot of extra time, and often it doesn't matter how much time you spend, he's simply indecipherable.  Still, they'd prefer to try to make us feel incompetent and keep the client, while we all lose money because of him.

I presume you reuse your nickel otherwise - sm
many here would need 200+ rolls of nickels a day to do this. I use a timer to increase my speed. I set it for 30 minutes and see how many minutes of work on a particular doctor I can get done in that time. I generally average 8-9 minutes in 30 minutes which for me is a good amount. I am trying to do it all the time now so I work smarter and faster.
If you're on Windows XP, as I presume you are....
...you need SP3, not an update to SP2. SP3 incorporates all prior updates, patches, etc.

Here's the link for you to paste into your browser:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsxp/sp3/default.mspx

Note that there's a link on this page "Steps to take before installing SP3" - read this.

Then skip over the part about setting up Windows Update to automatically take care of this (although afterward, you should) and go right down to the link for the download page.

Incidentally, in their inimitable arrogant way, Microsoft requires you to be running Internet Explorer to access the download page (not Firefox, Opera, etc.).
Slowing down Dictaphone
When I used it, it was #4, but you'll need to check with your supervisor to make sure that is the right code. Then you do ## to go back to regular speed. This worked on my current transcriber also.
I'm slowing giving up my perfectionism...SM
in that I won't search and search and search for a new/unfamiliar term. I'll do a quick search in my books and Google and maybe ask on the Word Board, but if nothing comes up, I flag it. I used to spend WAY too much time wanting to find these things, mainly because I'm pretty anal, which is generally a good thing in MT but can end up costing you $$$!
Not necessarily...metabolism slowing...
as we get older is a much more likely culprit.  At 50, our metabolism is on average 50% lower than at age 16.  That is why when we are young we can lose weight easily and rapidly, but as we age it's a tremendous struggle.  Exercise is the key, as it not only burns calories but revs up the metabolism for hours following.
Slowing down and listening ahead
These are two different things. You have to practice them separately, then eventually merge them.

As for slowing down, that should be the easiest. It means to key at a speed slow enough that you make no typos. None whatsoever--not even one.

Just practice typing one sentence until you can key it correctly without a single error. Go on to a paragraph. You'll settle on a speed that works for you.

You may feel that you are typing s l o o o o w l y, and this may frustrate you, but bear with it for a bit. Practice this every day, slowly and smoothly, giving each letter the same amount of time. No machine-gun rat-a-tat-tat. No speeding up and slowing down.

Your goal is to maintain the same boring, monotonous rate on and on and on. It shouldn't be tiring at all. You'll find it easy and restful, but you'll make better progress because you won't have to stop to fix anything.

To learn to listen ahead, you'll need to pretend that you're working on a typewriter. If you have an actual typewriter, use that. Otherwise, just assume that you CANNOT correct anything. What you type has to stay on the page forever, so it had better be right the first time.

Take a practice report. Listen to the first entire sentence without typing anything. Hold it in your head. Now type it from memory. Do the whole report that way.

You'll have trouble with whole sentences at first. You might have to do just phrases, then longer phrases, then work up to sentences.

Practice that perhaps an hour a day for a week or so. At some point, the process may click for you and you'll figure out the point behind it.

Once you can do whole sentences, you can start typing while listening. Listen to the first sentence, but this time start typing it when you have heard half or all of it. You can pause the tape momentarily at the end of the sentence if you need to, but you should be able to type continuously.

Listen listen listen . . . listentype listentype listentype type type type listentype listentype listentype type type type, etc.

It takes practice, but it's worth it.

I also have Audacity (for my legal work).  PC World has several listed as well.  You might try this link: http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,22513,00.asp
She said she had a DVD player for the car so it would not be that bad - sm
I drive to the Philly area (4 hour drive w/o stops) with the kids at least 4 x a year. I use my laptop (my travel computer) and play movies for the kids to watch, the one reason I bought a laptop with a DVD drive. It is great. My husband built a little table to put the computer on in the backseat with them (Suburban so plenty of room), and some of the time the kids play with their Barbies, read, gameboys, Pixtar, etc. and the other part they watch a movie or 2 (they are short movies for the most part). The trip is not too bad, and the kids don't fight, wonderful. Takes about 4.5-5 hours depending on how many food and pee stops, I carry a potty seat with me so that helps save some time and I can stop anywhere basically. So it is possible to make it pleasant, of course the kids will want/need to run about a bit when you get there after sitting strapped in all that time, but they will be fine otherwise, and I speak from much experience in this as I have been doing this for 7+ years now. The DVD player makes a BIG difference in how smoothly a long drive goes.
What .wav player are you using?
.
wav player
Sorry to change the subject and hope this is the right board.  But, I have a problem. I was testing with 2 reports to transcribe.  My wav player only would let me do the first one.  It is rather hard to explain but I could not access the 2nd file. I shut my computer off and tried again but it would not let me have access to it.  Does anybody know what I mean?  The file is unzipped and I can click on it but no audio comes up. This is on both.  I just got this player and, of course, cannot find the directions so if anyone can help I would appeciate it.
I have DSS player, the doc who uses
it has a dock that is attached to his computer, he puts his player in the dock and it is able to send the voice files to my computer. Not sure all the mechanics of it on his end, but if your docs have used it before they should already have the dock and be able to send.
Dss Player for Mac
Olympus dss player for mac is tho only mac compatible program. Purchas the AS2300 kit for around $199.
What is the best .wav player

I currently use Express Scribe and wanted to get some opinions on other .wav players out there as far as dictation sound quality goes.

Thanks!!

Are you using a player with it?
Not sure if you're asking about programming your pedal, or if you've done that and it still won't work.

If that's the case, make sure you've checked the correct player. After you sign on, click options and then select the player you're using.
Vxp player?
Has anyone been able to install VXP player on Vista?
WAV player
Does anyone have any favorite WAV players that work with a foot pedal? I have Express Scribe, but the sound quality is not the best. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
perhaps it's not the player...
perhaps it's the recording itself. or your headphones/speakers. I use Express Scribe and some files are clear as a bell, some are muffled...it all depends on the file format, the recording device, etc...in other words not on your end but on the dictator's end.
I don't know for sure if a different player
would make a difference, but I do know that if you use USB headphones versus one that plugs into your speakers or the round outlets on your computer the wound will be better.  It won't be a huge difference, but if you try it for a month and then go back to regular phones you'll notice a difference.  You can probably get a headset for around $30.   There is also a thing called Audio Advantage by Turtle Beach (you can google).  It is pretty much the same thing as above, it turns your regular headset in USB ones, but you also have some software on your computer where you can manipulate the sound.  It takes a little bit of playing with to get it just right though.  I have a company supplied computer and not allowed to be anything on my computer.  I'm using the headset part, just can't use the software now, but it is still better than using your sound card.  I got it at Best Buy for around $30 a couple of years ago.
Try FTR Player Plus...SM

For the Record player, it plays wav files...you can download it at:  http://www.fortherecord.com/page.asp?pageid=222

It is free.

It's just a wav player, that's all. NM

DSS Player
I have been using the DSS Player 2002 for a couple of years.  It plays DSS, WMA, and WAV files.  I haven't had any trouble with it at all but it is rather expensive.
VF player
HELP!! Is anyone familiar with VF Player from BCB voice systems?  My boss sent it to me to load on my PC so that I could pick up some extra work and I can't get it to work.  I am running Windows XP, is that why?
Anyone using Gear player?

Sounds like a really good package deal, anyone using it?  I am thinking of using the digital recorder and buying the gear player package.

TIA,

Sunny

No you don't have to buy it. If you don't have a compatible player - sm
that can play "PlayAll" files then they will supply the PlayAll XTRA player, though they do ask you send them a CD for it I believe. They supply the WP DOS 5.1, Stedman's Spellcheck via email. That is why I said don't let the question throw you, you don't have to buy anything.....unless you are new of course, then you will need a footpedal. Bytescribe is compatible with the sound files and that is what I use, I also have a copy of the PlayAll which I use to pull up the file information I need to transcribe, but it won't work if you have Bytescribe on your computer. I love my Bytescribe so it stays. They will train in in the use of WP 5.1 and they hire newbies too. I started to work for them with 2 months of experience....it will be 4 years in May since I began working for them. As I said good people, I appreciate them as much as they appreciate me.
That's true but if you already have a player

like Start Stop or something else, and you only need DocShuttle to be able to download files, then you don't need their wav player. You can just open them in your own player and mark them complete (and attach for upload if the company works it that way) when you're done.

I use Olympus Player every day and like it SM
much better Express Scribe!
Try downloading this player
http://www.olympus-europa.com/consumer/2590_4694.htm

It should open the file and then maybe you can change the format of the file back to a wav file.
Suggestion for wav player
I have Express Scribe wav player but cannot get it to SLOW DOWN the dictator using keyboard control.  anyone have suggestion?  Which wav player would you suggest investing in? TU
But can you use foot player with that?
sdf
I never got rid of my tape-player or my -sm
typewriter. You just never know what sort of disaster could come up in the future, where those things would be a real life-saver. And amazingly, PCs never increased my daily work output. It actually DECREASED a bit once we went to PCs.
Gear Player is also...

an  alternative.

gear player--sm
i downloaded the free 5 day trial of gear player to take a test.  Cannot get it to work.  The icon is on my desktop, but when i try to open it to drop the voice file in, it only appears for a few seconds and then nothing.  any ideas??
Gear Player is the best.
I have been using Gear Player for 4 years now and it just keeps getting better. It plays what I need it to play. I had tried StartStop before Gear Player and it was like I was back on Windows 95. Above all I love Gear Players support department, the guys are very friendly and can fix anything if you ever do need to call them.
I used their wave player when I had an
account with .dss files.  It worked fine.
Cont: Cannot use outside player such as

Gear Player,

Gear Player, Transcription Gear, several places have those for sale.  Also on E-Bay.

Real Player
Does anyone know what Real Player is, or how it it used?
Real Player
It can be used to listen to music, videos, and you can listen to audio through it for transcription, but I know my foot pedal doesn't work with it. It actually came on my computer when I got it.
While I cannot recommend one particular player, (sm)
I can tell you this. The quality of the DAC (digital-to-analog converter)is PARAMOUNT when assessing sound quality. Sound is contingent on the attributes & quality of: 1)the digital file, 2)the DAC chip***; 3)amount of distortion and other interference from the device's other circuitry, and 4)the audio output level of your headphones and/or speakers. Take ALL of the above factors into consideration when asking a recruiter about what player they utilize. Good Luck.
wav player program
Yeah, sounds like the same problem, but I have tried the same as you and then there are times that that does not even help.  I am jus to where I just have to keep loading the file.  I even let the Start/Stop load completely to where it looks for updates and that does not stop this issue.
Bytescribe player
You can just buy the player. I use it and found it to play all files even those pesky ds2 files from Olympus that I get, which nothing else will play. I also love the tech support; always get a response. I have used GearPlayer also in the past and found it okay, but the files it will play are limited. HTH.
anyone use Olympus player?? sm

I've used it for years and all of a sudden when I go to transcribe the file I have highlighted, the player disappears.  The "player and slider" do not stay "on top" of the WORD document.  I can minimize it and open it that way, but it is a pain.  I want it "on top" of the document so I can see progress of the file. As it is now, I "can't see it" and therefore can't open or close it.   anyone know what happened?  TIA

GEAR PLAYER---I was going to put it on e-Bay, but...sm
Email me if you are interested. I'll give you a great deal on it! It was brand new when I bought it and used it only for about a month.

Please let me know either way. I need the $$. Thanks!
I'm offered a new accout using MP3 player.....

The provider is using the player with his curernt MT.  The parent company wants me to assume his account.  I've asked what method he is using currently to get his dictation to the MT to see what I need on my end.  I already  have a Bytescribe wave player that plays MP3s, so that is not a problem.   What other software can be used to get the dictation from him to me and still fall within HIPAA guidelines?

The wav player is the software you would use to listen to sm
the voice files.  The foot pedal is what moves the file along.  There is a free wav player called ExpressScribe you can download.  (only a little help, and just about all I know about it!).
