that pays a minimum of 10 cents a line. I have been an MT for 27 years and I take pride in my work. Things have changed at my current company and cherry pickers have taken over so I end up doing all the reports no one else wants to do. This takes me longer and my line count is suffering. I know there have to be good companies out there that pay well and need good employees. I have left my email address if anyone would like to offer me some hope and share names of companies. Please no flames, I am just an honest MT wanting an honest job with decent compensation. Thanks for any help.

I have steady work during the week and don't need to work weekends, but my husband's job and paychecks have been hit by the economy, so I'm adding some weekend work at least through the end of the year to help make up for it.
I would go where you are sure you will have steady work all the time.

I'm certainly not going to be sitting at the computer 24/7 waiting for reports to trickle in. We are so stupid to be putting up with this. Why do we stay?
Been trying to find steady MT work for 8 months now, at least
At first, no one would even respond. A few months ago I decided to take ANYTHING from anyone who actually did respond.
I'm used to getting paid 10 cents a line for the past 12 years, but when I did get a bite from a company, I took it, even at 7 cents and 8 cents because at that point I was STARVING and worried about making my house payments and paying my utility bills!
Now do you know what the problem is? All three frickin companies have very little to NO WORK available. This is consistent.
Now, at 7 and 8 cents a line and barely squeezing out any work between three DIFFERENT companies (even though they KNOW I am available to do any and all work they have), I am just about as bad off as I was before finding these jobs.
I know nothing else and have no college education, BUT I do know my job backwards and forwards, research skills, terminology, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology and everything else that goes with being a good, experienced MT.
Do you think I am getting paid for this experience? No. Times are bad right now, but they've been bad for me for many, many months. I just don't know what I'm going to do anymore. I rue the day I went to school for this godawful so-called profession.
Every day wake up, raring to go, hopeful there will be SOME kind of work available, at least to make $80 or $100 a day, AT LEAST.
But every day I end up stressing out, worrying, continuously being broken down because even though I'm a hard worker and a darn good MT, I am treated like low-class scum by my creditors because all my bills are late & I can't pick up the phone anymore due to bill collectors on my back. Believe me, I paid all my bills on time every time when the work was abundant and I WANT to pay my bills, but good intentions don't pay the bills. Neither does little to no work at a lame 7 or 8 cents a line.
I also have little food in the fridge or pantry, and things are beginning to be shut off left and right.
I don't know...
It's just extremely frustrating and stressful. I can't live like this anymore but have no way out.

I wouldn't say I don't run out of work, but maybe 3 times a year I do. Just depends. Around school time beginning I do. May pay is probably above average because the company I worked for that MQ bought paid really well.
I have had absolutely no problems with MQ, though the things I keep hearing and seeing do bother me that I belong to a co. like this. But personally, they've been too good to me.
I guess not all offices are the same, for sure!

SS is a good company. I work as QA though so I don't know from
an MT perspective on the work load. Been with them almost a year.

Finding out options/information on more efficient ways of running transcription company.
Anyone have any advice on where one would start if one wants to upgrade their current transcription system? I am an MTSO whose company is growing and I have found that the current call in system is becoming congested as there are only 8 lines and I want to make the move to be internet based, but not quite sure where to begin finding out information about this or what sort of companies I would call to help me get this system in place. Can anyone offer some advice? Thanks in advance.
Is Keystrokes a good company for any work type other than radiology? sm
I have seen really good reports on this board (and others) about Keystrokes being the place to be for radiology but have really not seen much discussion regarding other work types. I am primarily interested in op notes as I understand they will only hire if you have spent the last several years in a particular work type and ops are it for me. I wonder about their platform, pay scale, flexibility, whether or not weekend work is required, etc. I have left my email address in case anyone would like to privately email me. Need help finding a good expander program
I work on DocQscribe and I use Instant Text. Does anybody out there work on a different shorthand program that is compatible with DocQscribe? Instant Text is okay but I am wondering if there is another program I would like more.
"Everyone" isn't finding good jobs.
I haven't worked in MT for almost eight months now. The line rate keeps going down while the work gets more difficult. I used to make $.12 cpl and could plow through the work with my expander. Now it's ESL, staticky recordings and difficult specialties like oncology and cardiology at a low rate. The last cpl I was offered was $.065. One company even offered me $.055. I'd rather work at McDonalds than go back to the same pay that I made as an uneducated newbie with zero experience. At least Mickey Ds gives free food and benefits. Snort!
As an IC...are you finding enough work?
I was an IC for 26 years, then decided to join the digital world and become an employee for benefits sake. I am on my third company in one year and none of them have kept me in full time work (1500 lines/day). I'm so frustrated. I love the bennies but I need full-time work. So, I'm considering going IC again and trying to get as many accounts/companies as I need to get the lines I need.
I am wondering if the ICs around here are still able to find the amount of work they want...specifically via MTSOs rather than local offices/hospitals...anyone who cares to share, I sure would appreciate hearing your experience. TIA.
Any suggestions for a good MT for part time other than MQ as far as a nice company to work for. I
think it is time for a change about now.

You must live in Calif - finding a good old doctor is nearly impossible here.
It amazes me. But, it is true. The stories I have heard are heartbreaking.
I blame it on the cap they placed on malpractice suits. Doctors here are complacent. In my town, we go to Stanford or UCLA for serious illnesses. It is well worth the drive.
Finding a legitimate work-at-home opportunity
Finding a legitimate work-at-home opportunity can be very confusing task, but once you get in to the field you feel great by working at the comfort of your home. You may come across many opportunities but you have to very ideal in choosing the best which suits you. In case, if you have always worked for someone else and are depressed with this situation, or if you want to spend more time at home, you may want to consider finding a work at home opportunity that will allow you to earn money but give you the free time you are looking for.

You don't want to work for this company. Call your current company and
tell them that you have decided against the new position and tell them that you would like to stay. It is cheaper for them to let you stay than to train someone new. A company who could be so tacky as the one you just spoke of is one you do not want to work for. You can rescind your resignation. If you are a good MT, they will be glad you did.
Slow and Steady
I too do not name myself a typist. i have learned many moons ago it is not speed that gets you the clients - it is accuracy. I may do between 15-400 lines per hour depending on the client and format, etc. But because my accuracy is way up there I have not lack for work ever, and my clients know that a kind referral is always a pleasure. I have private clients and work for MTSO - and enjoying watching my lines go up and down on my time, at my pace.
I gauge my counts from day to day and know if I need to put in a bit more to make my bills. I do not worry about how others may or may not be making $45.00 an hour. I only believe what I make and know what I can earn. Line counts will pick up when you concern yourself more with accuracy and stop thinking about the numbers all the time.

i used to work for a company that divided the work types up and i loved it. sm
there were only 4 of us working a major teaching hospital. someone was assigned surgery, different assigned discharges, different admits, etc. we all had the backup work type in case the original assignee wasn't available and were cross trained. it made us much more efficient, ability to get used to dictators, set macros, and in the long run we were all much happier.
The company I work for said cable phone wouldn't work, just FYI.

Finally steady money. whew. Applied and got job at Dept of Law Enforcement entering
They started me way above minimum because of my experience. I was shocked and happy all at the same time.
And of course I'm esctatic to not be wondering how much money I would be getting each pay check. Working on production in transcription now is like playing Russian Roulette.
There's good benes where I going, retirement, sick days, no games with my health insurance. I should have done this long ago.
I don't work for MQ but that happened to me once at the company where I work and
my next two paychecks were shorted out of what they had overpaid me for that pay period. I hope they don't take it out of your hide. It was hard to budget for that month!

I work as an IC, work when I want, but I still let the company know if I am going to be unavailable
for any length of time, even though I don't have to.

 I have been working for JLG for the past month or so and I have to say I am very impressed. This company delivers what they pitch in the interview. They do small things to make you feel part of the company and to make you feel important, but the best part is that so far they have paid on time, with absolutely no hassels of any kind. They strive to make sure that you do not run out of work. I am now assigned to 3 different accounts and so far the work has been more than I can do. They also pay comparable line rates according to other companies across the board.
I wanted to put this out there just in case someone is looking for a position. As I understand it, one of their requirements is that you have 3 years experience with acute care transcription. It has been stated to me several times that they are looking to hire a large number of transciptionsts, so possibly some of you can look into their company. So far, I am very pleased, especially coming from the last company that I worked for. I will be posting about that company later.

I work with AccuStat and so do 10 friends of mine. We all love it. The pay is different but that is designated by the clients and not Accustat. You will love working with them. You will see that any bad remarks made about them are usually by MTs that were fired for poor work. That is true of most of these bad things written on these companies. You made a good choice! AccuStat is a great company!!

Okay, Spheris does not sound good and Ascend sounds like they do not pay. So anybody have any suggestions for a possibly to be ex-MQer.

I work for one, too. They don't bother me - and the communication is very good. What specialities do you transcribe? Therein may lie the answer to your problem. If you have limited your experience by transcribing radiology or clinic work for years, losing any acute care or other specialty experience that you may have had - then the problem does not lie in the company, but in the fact of the path that you have chosen.

They will use ya and be great when they need ya. They will dump ya in a heartbeat when they find someone else who they can pay less and all the sudden you have no work. They are unethical and only care about bottom dollar. Me and 7 of my friends left them when they did this to us.

They used to be under another name and were bought out. There's plenty of work and you don't deal with a huge staff, just 2 people and that's it.
