I have worked at home for the past 10 years with some on-site work part-time. I have managed to get my work done, clean the house, pay bills, answer the phone, and care for my two children. It's called multitasking. I would have to say that someone here is using their interruptions as an excuse. Have you heard the phrase "I'll be there in a minute?" Come on people. This is not rocket science. The whole idea of being at home is just that to multitask.
Oh, and don't think for a minute, I didn't hear others when I was on-site making personal phone calls, looking up things on the internet for their husband, planning their next vacation, and ordering take-out to pick-up on the way home. Either way, you either can hack it or you can't. End of story.
My work time - baloney! My work is 24/7. I'm a work-at-home Mom, a wife, a sister, a friend, a pet owner, and I am still a successful MT. You have to be flexible if you want to work in this environment. I do not believe MT work is the only work-at-home profession either.
I must add that babysitting for me is out of the question. I am raising my own children and no one else's. Sorry, but that's just not in my job description.
When my children do have playmates over, they seem very needy. My children have adapted to me working at home. But, I guess I was lucky in that my husband was understanding and when he could help with the kids, he would. He'd take them fishing or play a game to "let Mommy work", and yes I have always had my desk in the family room area - no special office for me. Sure, my stapler is missing once a while. I just chuckle! No big deal!
Oh and with another poster said, I am very serious about my work! I get it done and I am paid very well to do it!
