I was a FT employee, but I had 24-hour TAT. Worked for a small
local MTSO.   Currently work for a small national and while I don't have babies anymore, the MTSO is a mother herself and is very understanding and allows me some flexibility because she knows I am reliable and good at what I do.
I also make 11 cpl as an IC. This also is a small MTSO. nm

There are still a lot of small companies that make it...nm

I make over 9 cpl with Spheris as employee.

small company
You just keep your eyes open all the time. Keep looking. You will find them. Opportunity comes knocking at the strangest time if you just keep looking.
small company would not pay.

11 cpl as IC for 1 company, 13 cpl as an employee for another.
10 cpl for clinic work but same account for 14 years so it flies.
well, of course you make more with your own accounts cuz you're not employee
nm
if you have benefits, doesnt that make you an employee?
nm
It is a medium-small company...
but isn't hiring at this time.  MTs tend to stay as they are treated with respect as well as paid well.  The pay is based on a 65-character line with spaces, an 11-word line or gross line, depending on the account.
Oh no... This is a small local company. nm
nm
Small company in Ohio did that to me.
Had Indians working on something called Expresive. Wanted to pay me by the hour to put all my normals up on her FTP for the other MTs, then I got all the difficult OPs, asked to QA for 2 cpl, then stopped giving me acute care work & switched me to Rehab on a cumbersome Meditech program.
I'll bet it was the same small company that
nearly did me in as well. Do they come at you for compound modifiers?  Yikes! I felt the same way - just could not do anything right, decades of experience. I finally got thru the constant QA barrage, and now am glad I did. But I know the feeling. I left the job down the road, part time and just too many rules so that it messed up my other jobs!! I would get its the same small company - they have very high QA standards, which is great on one hand, but...I also knew that some of it was a tad ridiculous! I would be sick while working, and that is NOT good!
No, I work for a small company in AR
Do you work for a national and, if so, do you like it?
Just a very small private company. nm

I'm with a small local company....sm
so that doesn't help you, but I have heard good things about WildBlue, you might want to check out their website.
Spheris employee looking for better company.

Spheris just changed and is doing away with our primary accounts.  All jobs now will be received per TAT, which means a drop in line count again.  I've been with them almost six years, but seriously thinking about a change.  I've gone thru all their changes, each one dropped my pay check; can't take many more of these.

I'm tired of being penalized because I forgot to put an "s" on the end of a word.  I understand quality, but geesh, come on, be realistic!  I'm tired of being put on accounts that I can't make my line count just because they're out of TAT.  That's not my fault, that's their fault for taking on more accounts than they have MTs for.  Sorry, I'll get off the pulpit.

I have searched the net and found so many companies; i.e. MedQuest; Spectra; MTC; RK Master; ALL Transcription, etc.  Anyone have information, good/bad, about these or other companies?  Any suggestions?

Wow! I do 1600 lines daily and make only 9.5 cpl as employee-
SE is that without benefits.

What MQ office do you work for? Are they hiring.
They're a small company in Texas. Would that be the one? nm

look for a small local company in your area

I worked for a small company and although I did get paid by the line, I made way more than $16 an hour and could pretty much name my own hours to work. I did, however, have to pick up tapes!

I work for a small local company.
It seems that the smaller MTSOs pay better than the nationals. Maybe that would be a good avenue for you to try. I just think the low rates offered by the nationals are insulting.
Yes, small company wanted to charge me
$50. a month for 5 or 6 months to cover cost of software licensing fees. I would have taken the job if not for that major glitch.

I make very good money at home with a small MTSO

I'm an employee at a medium-size MT company...

...I work at home yet I've had to buy my own equipment (computers, references, supplies), and now they want me to start making long-distance phone calls (to clients, the office) and state they will not reimburse me for those any long distance calls I make.

I'm not an IC, I'm an employee.  This can't be right can it?

I've know the owner and it is a small company. He doesn't know the first
thing about MT, word processing programs, etc.   I have worked for the company through 3 owners and now I do prn work for him.
How do you do 2000 a day? Do you work for a national or small company? nm

nm

I'm sorry I didn’t make myself clear. As an employee I can only work 40 hours per week (sm)
Overtime has to be approved by manager. I have always been an SE and could work as many hours as I wanted to, such as when I had a day of bad dictators I could work until I got my daily line count. Just wondering if all states had this law. I am working in CA.
Unlimited Long Distance + C-phone, small company needs MT

I currently need an experienced MT (at least three years - actual medical typing) to cover a 2 doctor account.  Very simple dictation - SOAP note format.  This account is looking for another doctor, so that could add in.  Currently, very small amount of dictation - approximately 800-1300 lines total per week.  24 hour turn around.

If you have a c-phone and have unlimited long distance, please send me your resume + 2 references for people you have actually typed for.  Start rate 8cpl (65 character).  This is an IC position.

I am the owner of a small transcription company in Virginia - have had stable accounts and great MT's for over 13 years.  THANK YOU!!!

Can a statutory employee draw unemployment if terminated from job due to restructuring of company?

My first job was a total cold call to small local company...got hired over the phone- sm
give it a shot. Look in your yellow pages or on-line white and yellow pages and see what you can come up with. MT Daily has a list by state of MT companies to with their contact info. Also test your butt off anywhere and everywhere on line, you will learn a lot during the process. I found it quite enlightening when I was doing it 3+ years ago. Good luck.
I would make sure you ask what company they are with!

Not necessarily - I make 12 cpl for a company. nm

just another way for the company to make money..nm

Every company is different -- I worked FT for one as an employee but worked a split shift - sm
So I never took breaks. I would work 5 hours, break for about 4 hours then do another 3. Another company I worked for did not care what hours you worked (IC) but wanted a min. amount of work each day, 500 for PT and 1000 for FT-- BUT they paid you by how many lines an hour you put out, the higher the lph the higher up the scale you made per line in pay; they have since changed everyone to a flat rate with incentive. But bottom line, if you are an IC it does not matter what hours you work, though many ask for a schedule and ask you to stick to it, they just want you to meet line requirements daily, i.e. 1000 per day, 1200 per day, whatever it is.
Wouldn't it make more sense for the company
to hire someone for that shift, and that person could be a "stat" person in addition to typing a regular account?  Nah, I guess that would be just too simple!
I make 0.725 cents per line after 5 years with the same company - nm

What about benefits? I make 50k a year working for a company
out of my home full time. No gas money, no traveling, no printing, faxing, and I get full benefits. How is making 50000 as an MTSO good money? I really just don't get it!
I work for a large company beginning with an "M" and make
10.5 for text and 7 cpl for speech recognition. I work 10 hours a week and make 800 a month. I'm old and slow too.
A small national is a national company that is smaller
than a big national.  There are a few "big" nationals, where they have hundreds, if not thousands of employees.   I work for what I call a small national, only has about 30 employees.    An MTSO could also be considered a small national.
Read between the lines. When a company starts saying work more to make more
and you have to work in assembly-line fashion like an automaton, they are having a cash crunch.  They held out one salary to you to get you to do the job, then they turn around and cut your pay because you make too much.  They don't sound financially stable.  If you've only been on the job 2 months, start looking elsewhere for a more financially stable company.   Send out your resume and see what other companies have to offer and check out references for those companies.  I and a friend in the past have gone part-time with a new company before resigning from the old one in order to make sure the new company is going to be compatible with us. It's hard to do, but it's short-term for only 1 or 2 weeks.
Excuse me but federal taxes are paid as employee by employee
The ONLY difference in IC is you pay the ENTIRE amount of the SS which is the 15.25%, as an employee you only pay 7.75%.  And you can easily make up that difference in deductions.  As an employee you just have someone else manage your withholdings and as an IC you do it yourself.  I have much more usable income being an IC and not an employee and I am strict about putting aside what I need to.  But everyone always says you have to pay your own taxes, well your employer does not PAY them for you -- except 7.75% of SS, they merely withhold it for you.  As an IC you are the employer.
small mentality usually means small pocketbook
Still make more than you and I but that is deserved. They've put the effort forward and educated themselves.

if mt paid 9, editor paid 4 or 5...how can company charge 14 and make it..sm

I know the going rate in our area is 14 cents per line.  As MTs most companies here pay us 8 or 9 cents a line.  Now add in the Editor rate at 4 or 5 per line..you are paying OUT more than you can charge a line.  How would companies stay in biz?

Unless all work is sent by the company overseas at pennies per line, this would not pay for a company.

just curious how this works out

Does anyone know if you are a part time employee for 1 company and part time IC for another can you
still claim deductions for IC on your income tax even though you are one of each.
You an IC, statutory employee or employee?
That designation, and/or forcing the IRS to designate you, can make a diff. Are you a corporation? Partnership? You need WAY more help than we can give you.
If you are employee, unless suit against your employee
otherwise the posts on here as far as I can see telling it like it is. I think a lot of the posts are so young they just don’t have a clue as to what it means to be an employee. You do as your employee wants (I am talking reason now, not stupidity as far as sexual advances, etc) or else you find another company that fits your personality better. You do not confront, you do not tell your employee no, that is their job, not yours. This is such a simple thing for people who have been in the work force for any period of time.
You spending 3K in gasoline to make 4K plus all that time on the road? That doesn't make sense Pat

How nice that the world revolves around what you make and no one else could possibly make more. sm

Marla in So. California pays 11 cpl for a 55 ccl, Oracle pays 9-1/2 cpl, MDI-MD 11 cpl, JLG 10 cpl for gross line, etc.

Of course, these are rates negotiated and paid to qualified MTs.

When I see mistakes I repeatedly make, I make a quickcorrect for it (sm)
for example if I type we plant o instead of "plan to" I have a quick corrct so that if I type plant o, it replaces it with plan to, etc. It is hard - I was with the same company for 8 years. I do not work for anyone with an accuracy requirement though.
