I made my best money doing ER. Granted,

Posted By: it was my own account and sm on 2005-12-19
In Reply to: please explain ... - ERs ????

I got 13 cpl.  But the doctors said the same things over and over and there were I think only 6 or 7 ER doctors for that hospital.  I worked 4 hours a day, 7 days a week, and made $1000 a week.  Loved it!

T-chart changed all that.

I made a whole $12K this year, granted when my daughter got cancer in March - sm
my income took a big hit as I went "on leave" from my FT job, and cut back on my PT job drastically. I did not get back to working a more normal schedule until October. I now work 2 PT jobs. So had I not had a 6 month hit in the pocket book I expect I would have made over $20K this year, not a fortune. My goal for 2006 is $24K, and as I am going to try my best to "work smart", I should be able to acheive that, staying disciplined is the key, of which I am sorely lacking. I am lucky that I don't have to live on this though, I'd be starving. As it is I have to play catch up on a lot of bills since I lost 6+ months of income, not fun.
really? made more money as an MT?

Wow, you must have had your own accounts independently then, right? It seems with some of today's trends in the MT field, that the pay will be not as good as it was, or harder to make equal to or close to what an RN would make.

I have made SO much money doing MT,

if I were doing it over again I would have finished my degree (which I am doing now).  I have been an MT for 25 years, as a hospital MT and an MTSO.  The money has been very good.  Being able to be home with my kids through the years was good.  But in other ways being home has been bad - for one not being able to walk away from work and leave it at the office.  I feel like I should always be working because there's always more money to be made.  I know over the years I have thrown 100% into my business and home/family have suffered.  I really think that other than being physically available for my kids, my home life was better when I worked in a hospital - because then when I was off work, I was off.  I came home and started dinner and cleaned the house while it was cooking and settled in for a relaxing evening.  Now I am often still working at 6 or 7 p.m., fast food dinners, house not cleaned, etc.  Yes, it's POSSIBLE to organize yourself so that you take care of those things too when you work at home, but I think for a lot of us we get into a rut.  I feel psychologically healthier getting out of the house, etc.  Which I am doing now that I am back in college and I will never go back to just being at home full time again.

Another downside - weight gain from being sedentary!

there is still money to be made in this sm
business. But, after over 30 years as an MT, I would suggest that you PLEASE work in-house in a hospital for 2-3 years before you ever come home to work on production. The schools are not telling the students this information and they are doing their students a great disservice.
While I have made great money doing MT,

if I had it do over, no I would not go into MT.  I would have finished college and gotten my degree instead.  I am back in college now to get my degree, but it would have been so much better if I had done it years ago.

I agree with the MT who says after 25 years she is working harder and making less.  It's the same for me.  I am getting burned out after all these years, I can't type the long hours I once did, I can't see doing this for another 20 years.  If the money was there like it used to be, that might be different.

made more money 15 years ago than I do now. nm.

Is there "bad" money to be made?
Just wondering in this economy if anyone would say, "Oh no, sorry, that's bad money." Unless, of course, it's the world's oldest profession which sometimes I think pays way higher!
Oh my goodness! They should quit then - if no money is to be made.
......
I did secret shopping......made some money but it
nm
The most & easiest money I ever made typin'

was for a hospital that had all these kickass "normals" for OP notes.  The docs would say, "Please use my _____ template" and that was it.  Some ortho templates were an instant 100+ lines and they took mere seconds to zap in!  Those days are long gone for me but I remember them fondly.

I knew they made good money...
I used to work for Kaiser in California. I really wanted to get on with the transcription department but there was NEVER an opening. I really miss working for Kaiser. I have not been able to find a hospital like that since I left. I now live in GA. The Kaiser here is not the same -- much smaller operation here. But I knew it, I knew it!

:)

I charged by the gross line and made more money that way.

So if someone isn't rolling in money, they have made a life choice mistake
and are living in squallor?  Uh, I don't think so.  If you're not an MT, why are you even here?  You certainly aren't a very helpful or happy little elf.
Sickest thing, I made more money my first year as MT as I do now, for working
zz
Don't take anything for granted
There are unscrupulous people everywhere, including in the MT field. Just because they are MTs does not make them honest people. Things always come in to play, like jealousy, etc. I am always on my guard, as I have had others try to undermine my work, although not in this field, but attempted to get me fired because I would not join their team of trying to get the boss fired. It backfired on them, and they are still in litigation for purchases they made on company funds, but mark my words, if you think it is happening, it probably is. A duck is a duck. Talk to the "owner" of the company...no one in between. You have no idea who is doing this. Trust no one. (sorry to feel that way, but experience talks). Good luck.
Granted I am no CPA, but I think you would - sm
pay your taxes on the amount after your write-offs/deductions. That's how our regular taxes work, and how SE tax works. I would presume a paid salary to someone is an expense and therefore can be written off, otherwise the government is getting double taxes (taxing you and the IC) on the same money. If they did that there would be no deficit and a lot of angry people.
I'd get the riding mower fixed pronto, granted - sm
push mowing 3 acres is probably great exercise, but it must be a bit time consuming. I used to cut 1.3 acres and it would take about 60-90 minutes on a riding mower, and that is with a house and pool in the way; can't imagine how long it takes to push mow 3 acres.
Money, money, money, mmonnneyyy. Singing the Apprentice song.
:+
i made $15/hr before and didn't stay long because i made so much more on production. sm
that was with full benes too. i wouldn't do it for less than $20, but i think even with $20, i'd want benes. are you in-house?
Ditto....granted I am not working much these days, but am currently trying out a new way of working
when I do work which seems to be helping.  I am timing myself and keeping a log of how long it takes to to type however many minutes.  I am averaging anywhere from 13-18 minutes of dictation an hour now doing this.  Granted the time fluctuates between who I am typing, and if I have to look up names, addresses, etc., just depends on the division I am doing at the time.  But work that used to take me 3 hours to do is now taking me under 2 hours, I am also trying to put in more macros as I go along, which slows me down initially but pays off in the long run of course.  I was working "all the time" before but took forever to get done since I was not applying myself. This new "attitude" has helped me a lot.  My goal, in the Fall, is to do 90 minutes a day consistently at 6 hours, and then maybe get up to 120 minutes a day at 8 hours, still while having at least half of the day free (do 60 minutes at night, and the other 60 by Noon).  Thereby doing 1200-1400 lines a day.  I have never really buckled down and done more than 8000 lines per pay period, so it will be a nice change.  Maybe you can do something like that and have a specific knock off time as was suggested below.
Make money? I'm not making any money because of my decision. You read my reasoning
You can agree with me or not, but don't make false assumptions please.
You're working to make money, not to spend money.
These people should be ashamed of themselves taking advantage of people this way!
I also blew some money signing up with Quixtar... The only way to make any money is to bug everyone

you know into signing up.  I felt like a snake oil huckster.  I hated it.  I was flushing money down the toilet from the moment I handed over my money.

RUN, do not walk away!  I do an entirely different side business now that I really love (in addition to my MTing, which I also love!)  Find something you're good at and that you truly love doing.  Then make a business out of it.  That's the best way to have a side business.  Selling discount toilet paper through Amway/Quixtar?  Not so much.

The CMT exam is overrated. Don't waste your time & money. Use that money on
paid anymore just because you have it.  There are a few CMT cheerleaders that post to people like you but they are pretty well sucked up into that association.
Yeah, money, that's it. I paid $20.00 for my dog. Money is NOT THE ISSUE
walk him daily, play ball daily, he sleeps in my office daily while I work. Yeah, I got a lot of money, NOT HARDLY. And, my dog is HORRIBLY HORRIBLY ABUSED because he wears a collar around his neck. It's people like you that make me sick. I am done defending my use of the shock collar. I am going to continue with it and my dog will continue to be pampered , educated, fed, kept warm, and love me for everything that I do for him even when I remind him that his barking needs to stop. So, with that said, I will not respond to any more of your CRAP in reference to the shock collar.
Money is money and most people will do whatever it takes when in need. sm
if you do bring it to the attn of the office manager, why not offer her a raise to compensate. it is obvious she just needs or wants more money than your office is paying her. I agree, it is a free country and although it seems odd, unless you had it outlined in contract, she can work for whomever or whereever she pleases on the side. at least she is typing and not at a strip joint, lol. I see no conflict of interest, she has experience obviously in whichever field you are in and what is wrong with doing extra in that field. i agree with MYOB "nicely" and concentrate on your reports than looking at older reports and seeing who they are typed by.
I don't know how it made such a small diff in your invoice... made a $100 diff in mine! (sm)

If it were only adding up to three bucks, I wouldn't sweat it. $100? Yeah, that's baseball registration for my son for this year. I am not giving tabs, returns, etc. away free when it adds up to that much difference!  Why should I charge less for a Return than I would for a"K"?

No need to wonder..It always means less money for the MT and more money for MQ.
z
Money, honey, money!!!!!!.
nm
One year and you make decent money? What is decent money to you?
k
because they are not as bad as they are made out to be sm
I would be willing to bet the majority of people posting negativity about MQ have been fired by them! I've been with MQ for over four years and am very, very happy. My check is always on time, sometimes early, I always have work, my coordinator is great, I can't say enough good about them. I would recommend you at least give MQ a chance. I admit, I was disappointed when they called me, but at the time, I just needed a job, so reluctantly I accepted their offer. Now four years later, I'm so glad I did. Everyone has their own opinion and experience about each company, and the same is with MQ. Not everyone will be happy there, but I certainly am. Good luck to ya!
made some changes...let's see

yes...you made my day..:-)
Thank you so much...works like a charm.
I have definitely made more
Plus, it saves on the hands and wrists. I never want to go back to straight typing. Still enjoy straight typing, and do about 70% VR editing and 30% typing. Love it.
You have just made me $$$
Yea!!!
I have to wonder if this is made up BUT if you are
be appreciative of the opportunity to become a superior MT by the QA guidance. If you allow yourself to fall into that pit of self destructiveness by playing 4th grade _the teacher hates me/likes me more than you_ routine, you only do yourself harm. Ask yourself...by having the information that someone is _getting away_ with something you can't, how can you _win_? You win by your superior skills. You learn and you thrive and if you need to, you move on. In the meantime, you learn things that you should have taught yourself as the proper way to transcribe 15+ years ago.

Someone who has been around for 20+ years and this was standard back then for quality MTing.
5 yrs ago, I made as low as $26 K, as hi as

Thank you. This just made my day.

probably made her day! (nm)

But maybe if she made that $500
AND talked to her mortgage lender....offered the $500....then maybe they would be more likely to work with her. It was a suggestion, and a fine one. Lets just help the girl out. OK!
There are several. Most of them are made by
Infinity, but can be wired to work with various systems, so just because it is Infinity doesn't mean it will work with one particular system.  If you don't already have a job that requires a pedal I would wait until you do.  Some pedals are configured to work with proprietary software and are only good for one program.   Some companies require serial port pedals, some game port, and some USB.  You can get adapters to switch them, though they aren't always easy to find.
Made changes
Yes, I have made the changes you outlined. Unfortunately, stuff like wthi and placentia have gone right on through. I work with Instant Text and the Expander will not run at the same time as Instant Text. Even if I turn the expander on, the first time I use the IT, the expander shuts off. Thanks for the suggestions!
MADE IN THE USA
One more thing - does naybody else rememebr those commercials - made in the USA, and "buy American" - I do, instead of outsourcing lets bring back the USA pride, If I could I would use USA instaed of my initials on documents I transcribe.
Sorry I am in a bit of a tizzy about outsourcing - just ranting, but mean every work of it
YES!! I made $15/hr at my first MT job...
and that was with excellent benefits back in 2001. I live in the midwest where the cost of living is very reasonable too. So, $12/hr for an experienced MT is awful! I only had experience as a medical assistant before becoming an MT and made more than that.
I used to do this but made more as MT. Now I also

LOL, you made my day. nm
xxx
You just made my day:) sm
You don't know how much I personally appreciate hearing you say that. So many people (even family) think that all I do is sit home in my jammies and straight "type." It's good to see someone who has an appreciation for how indepth the MT field actually is. You are awesome for making my day!
THANK YOU! You made my day nm
nm
Most of us know by now that it's mostly made up.

yep, that made my day. NM
Thank you!
And I made about $60,000 in the 80s
and now, horse of a different color, totally.
