I live in the Kansas City area and this summer we have had a rash of pit bull attacks especially

in the Independence, MO area.  The city governments have passed laws banning pit bulls and last week something like 100+ pitbulls were picked up by animal control or dropped off at the city pound and all were destroyed.

Personally, I think the owners of these animals should be held just as accountable as the dog.  Well, I guess maybe putting the owner to sleep is a bit extreme.

I'm so sorry about your lab.

Why does everyone think Kansas City, MO is
Kansas City, Kansas as well, but for the most part when you hear KANSAS CITY it is referring to Missouri.  The Kansas City Chiefs are in MISSOURI, not Kansas.  Downtown Kansas City (the one you hear about) is in MISSOURI, not Kansas.

Any experienced Kansas City MTs here

I need two MTs, clinic work, each for an average 500 to 1000 lines a day Monday through Friday, but usually around 700 to 800 lines.  Would like MTs who are really experienced and can turn in work ready to go to the client.  If interested, email me and we can discuss the work, pay, etc.

MUST have C-phone and you could start as early as Monday if you like!

why yes the quality of air where i live is quite different than where the city people live.
Lots of pollution.  That's why everyone is moving away from the city and areas zoned for multiple housing units and low income housing and trailer parks.  Population is dense and near manufacturing.  So yes, the air is different but millions of people pay a little extra for the quality, the space and privacy afforded to those who move out of polluted crowded areas such as you defend.  There is always a reason why some areas and housing is cheaper than others.  Maybe it is the air and maybe it's something you can't quite put your finger on but you know you would prefer not to live in certain areas.  You know what I mean or are you living in one of those areas?  They tell after awhile you block out the sounds, the smells and get used to the pollution.  I don't know.  I didn't stay long enough to test the theory.  My mental and physical health is way too important to me.
In our area of NY, I've found that hot summer weekends are terrible...sm
for sales. No one wants to get out of their cars in the heat! Have done best in early spring or in Sept/Oct., here anyway. And a Fri./Sat. combo is more successful than a Sat./Sun. weekend. Have BIG signs at major intersections and showing the way into your neighborhood and right to your house. Run an ad in the Garage Sale section of your paper. Be prepared for early birds coming down your driveway or right into your yard 2 hours ahead of time. Block your driveway with a car or sawhorses until you're actually open, but be ready to say 'come back later' when people show while you're setting up. Have prices on everything or group things by price in one location. Have lots of singles and quarters for change. Bring your phone outside with you. Paper and pen if people want to call you later. Have packing material for glass and china, plastic or paper bags for purchasers. Some hard candy/mints on a table out of sun helps people stick around longer. If you have big jackets, long dresses, bedspreads, etc. put them up for display - on hangers, in trees, strung up between ladders. Try and keep all your displays up at table height - people aren't keen on getting down on the ground to paw through boxes or check out stuff spread out on a bedsheet. Use every card table, picnic table, folding table, etc that you can find for displaying stuff. If you have anything electric to sell, have an extension cord plugged in so people can see that items still work. Keep expensive small items near you at your 'check out' station to keep them from walking away. And always be ready to come down on price as everyone will ask you, "can you do any better?" Or "what's your best price on this?" Enjoy your sale and treat yourself to pizza after all your hard work! :)
I'm not in a rural area. I'm in a big city and everything is SM
outsourced. My beloved company, run by a very decent man, was bought out by Edix. I thought they were bad until Spheris took them over. God help us.

Then there is the large community hospital, who has a "sweetheart deal" with another outsource company. You would not believe the garbage that goes on in this field.
? on this ungodly hot summer day, if you could live (and die) anywhere in the world, where would you
choose?  Just one choice please and assume it's your very last move in your lifetime so choose carefully.
Have you taken a course? Do you live in a town/city that - sm
maybe you could get some PRN work or part time work to get your resume started?
If you live in or near a large city sm

Check the Yellow Pages under "Dictation Services" or "Transcription Services." Some of them train in-house for several weeks and are willing to work with newbies.

That's an EXPENSIVE area to live in....
I would think you could make a LOT more, based on the area you live in and your work experience!
I live in remote area - no cable or DSL

and Clearwire is also not available.  I have the satellite service. It is expensive - you have to purchase the equipment and pay for the installation ($600 and up). The service is expensive too ($65).  The speed is not quite as fast as DSL, but I download and upload jobs with no problem.  Some MTSOs won't allow satellite service, citing security issues, which is dumb.  It's like any other wireless service - you have to make sure your signal is secure, which you do through your computer (not the service itself).  Even this is ridiculous in remote areas for 2 reasons: 1) I really don't think anyone is going to bother camping out on my land or drive down my mile-long driveway with their laptop just to see if they can pick up a signal and 2) even if they did, they can only gain access to the internet itself - they can't see what you are doing online.  So this security issue thing is baloney!  Also, in 2004 when we were hit by Hurricanes Charlie, Frances and Jeanne, there was no phone or cable service for nearly a month, but I was still able to work by just using our generator for my computer until the electric came back on - those that had dialup, DSL or cable were outta luck.

Does anyone live in the Denver, Colorado, area? sm

I may possibly be moving there.  What can you tell me about it?  The school systems do not matter as we no longer have children at home.  What areas are nice to live in?  I read that when it snows it usually melts the same day....is that true?

Any information from someone who lives there or has lived there would be much appreciated.

TIA

I am taking it that you live in my area..and people just don't get it here..
I know this is going to probably upset a lot of people on here, but at this point I have to take up for doxie. I believe she must live in the same area as me, and it is very, very rural..a place where you can barely make enough to survive.

Doxie, I have been an IC for many, many years and love working this way. If you would like to talk about it, please feel free to get in touch with me. I understand what it is like to have to live here and make a decent wage...and I can even tell you how to go about being an IC..which is what your original question was. :)

RACCOONS got mine, and I live in an apt. in an urban area!
(Little buggers left their pawprints all over my front door, too!) :(
Yep, I agree 100%. I live in such a rural area, though, that my neighbors, the natives, think I'm
NUTS cause I keep my dogs in the house, and actually still walk them on a leash in my yard.  We all have about 2 - 5 acres minimum each of woods in our neighborhood, and no real dog laws at all! Dogs run at large 24/7, which is no picnic for me with my dogs on leash, either!  And they ALL keep them outdoors, tied up with the chain and the smelly old dog house.  I think they just look at dogs strictly as deterents? Not sure really, come to think of it! Cause even if they were getting robbed, Fido couldn't get off the 6 foot chain! Oh well!  I used to be sad all the time for the plot of the dogs here, but I can't save them all! Only my guys!
You must live in a metro area because rural areas pay even less per hour.

Of course you can buy a big house for 130,000 in a smaller town and the same amount won't buy you a pot to pee in, in a place like San Diego or the D.C. area.  It's all relative.

Are you plannin to move closer to your family and away from the area where you live now?

Right now, everything is rockin along ok, but he may turn quite ugly because he isn't getting his way and you need to protect yourself and your children.  Have you changed the locks on your house? Are there other ways he can get into the house and if so, you should take care of that immediately.  Have you had the locks changed on your vehicle.  If not, you need to also do that immediately.  Does the school have the papers so that he can't walk in and take your children out of school or pick them up after school?

Believe me, I am glad you made the decision that you did, but I want you to know that I see on TV all too often, disgruntled husbands that come back and get revenge.  I don't mean to scare you, rather to let you know that because I went through a similar situation, you cannot take this lightheartedly.  If you can move away, far away from him and be close to your family, do it.

What would it take for you to be able to move back where you family lives?

Broken down once, never again.

I live in a small rural area and they housed some evacuees at a nearby military base
crime went UP in our little community that previously HAD a ~very low~ crime rate. It is a FACT. I'm not saying all NO residents are like that, but MANY seem to be.

My mom was raised in conditions like this poster describes. Mom's parents died when she was 7 (father) and 9 (mother). Her teenage sister (newlywed) raised her and 4 other siblings. They had next to nothing. Not ONE of them turned to a life of crime. Not ONE even graduated high school but they still made good lives for themselves. Life was rough for them, but they didn't blame it on everyone else and cry around about what the president should be doing for them. It is all about RESPONSIBILITY and taking what life throws your way. IMO.

Rash
Could be Group B Strept. You might need a course or ABCs. Call your doc.
rash
my daughter developed a horrible rash under her arms that started spreading over her sides, went to the doctor 3 times and got creams, antibiotics, and steroids, nothing helped. we finally discovered it was caused by aspartame (Splenda), and went away when she stopped using it in her coffee. researching on the internet, this appears to be a common reaction to aspartame.
Anyone with similar rash?

I had posted this q. on the Gab Board before, but got no response, maybe because I worded the subj line wrong or maybe it was just the wrong board.  Has anyone had an experience with an underarm rash that may be a form of tinea?  This started w/me having an irritation 3 months ago from wearing an ill-fitting bra in hot, humid weather.  Since then it has gone from red to a brownish rash that is spreading to areas under my arms that was not originally irritated.  Any OTC treatment I could try before I make an embarrassed visit to my doctor?  TIA!

anyone with similar rash
I would try clotrimazole liquid twice a day as directed to see if it helps. Many times it is fungal and could be precursor of diabetes. If not better in a couple of weeks would go to doc.
could be a mere fungal rash - Lotrisone/Lotrimin.NM

Kansas utility bills
Hi, I live on the Kansas/Oklahoma border have a 3000 sq ft home (2 levels) and 2 boys who don't know how to close doors. Anyway, our last electric bill was $260.00. This was keeping thermostat at 80 upstairs with ceiling fans going in every room. If it gets too warm, you just go downstairs where you have to wrap up in a blanket as there is a good 10 degrees difference in temp. I have to admit, I thought mine was high but am now thinking we don't have it too bad. Good luck to all and hopefully, we will still be able to pay these next year at this time and the rates won't have put us all in the poor house.
Panic attacks. Please sm.
I used to suffer from these on a daily basis. According to my doc at that time, they are usually brought on by a conscious or even subconscious stressor.

First thing? Be sure it was a panic attack and not something else. Yes, see a doc. I know others will disagree, and that's fine, but you asked and that is my 2 cents. No one.....not even the docs.....can diagnose over the phone or via internet.

The first rule is to make sure there is nothing physically causing this.
PERSONAL ATTACKS (SM)

Cut it out with the personal attacks.  If you don't like the subject matter, skip it.  Banning is the next step.  I'm tired of deleting unnecessary, ugly posts.

Why the disbelief and attacks? sm
Seems to me that those who find it simply unbelieveable and offensive that an MT can have an above average IQ and still choose to do this type of work insult the profession and those who choose to be transcriptionists.

I've experienced this same knee-jerk reaction (heavy on the JERK part) in the real world, too. Usually, it stems from nothing more than jealousy on the part of those who would LOVE to be able to "brag" that they have an above average IQ.
No, you just make YOUR attacks and then say

panic attacks since 1997
Doctors are a waste. You'll go thru dozens w/no outcome. What is necessary is this: Find the stressor(s) and eliminate. Minimize your life. Al-Anon or other group meetings are highly effective: Need new lifestyle/change in thinking, deal w/wreckage of past, deal with fears, obsessive thinking. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF FIRST AND FOREMOST. Hope this helped.
Chill. Personal attacks are not necessary. sm
I asked some thoughtful questions and you are questioning my right to be an MT. You don't know me. My work is excellent and I have many years of experience. If you don't want to answer a question, don't get personal. It isn't necessary.
We have had a couple pitbull attacks here - sm
on the west side of Richmond, however these were people attacks, both of which died. Both attacks were in the last 2 years or so. The owners in both cases were charged and both went to trial and were found guilty, manslaughter, I believe, were the charges. Pitbulls can be good dogs if brought up right, many get them to fight, etc. or do not train them so they are unmanageable, etc. though I would not have one around with children, you cannot be too safe. I am very sorry for your loss. I hope animal control is able to catch these dogs and get them destroyed. It will probably take a court order though, etc. Lots of legalities to wade through in this sort of thing so I hope it comes out in your favor so you get some satisfaction for your loss.
sorry, not in Kansas. PA is where I heard of a good job opening (near pittsburgh)

Stop with the vicious personal attacks. (SM)

Control the inflammatory remarks.  This is not your own personal war zone.  Take your confrontations elsewhere.

There now are reports of as many as 80 people dead -- a number that is likely to rise -- in apparent terror attacks aimed at tourists and travelers in Mumbai, India.

Oberoi_fire Reuters is reporting that at least 250 people have been wounded in the attacks, which appear targeted at tourists. In addition, Indian television is reporting Westerners are being held hostage at at least two hotels. News networks and wire services are reporting there have been at least seven separate attacks in the city, largely at luxury hotels and restaurants.

"I heard some gunshots around 9:30. I was with my friends. Something hit me. I ran away and fell on the road. Then somebody picked me up. I have injuries below my shoulder," Reuters reporter Sourav Mishra said from a hospital bed, Reuters reported.

The Times of India
reports there have been eight separate attacks, including a major terror strike at a large passenger railway station.
