I learned to put my phones in front of my ears inbetween dictations so I don't get blasted.

I waffle inbetween - some days

I love and other times I hate it.  I can sail through it when I get good dictators, but if I end up with a dipstick or two or three or background noise wreaking havoc with the words (either omitting entirely or inventing something really far out and wacky!) - forget about it.

I really like the concept of VR and when its working optimally it's wonderful and my poor little wrists are thankful.  But I HATE getting paid less when I'm doing just the same amount (or more) of work at times.  I REALLY, REALLY DO!

I'm sure I will get blasted for this, but...

I just started transcribing about two months ago.  I made $1500 the first month.  I am well on my way to $2500 for the second month.  I am so much more than satisfied with this.  I know, I know, there are people who have posted on the board who say that when they were doing this 20-30 years ago they made upwards of $75,000 a year.  Well, holy cow...I think that is a ludacrous amount of money to do what we do (not that I would mind it).  We aren't doctors, for the love of God.  I am not trying to say we don't have certain qualifications, but $75,000 20 years ago must have been comparable to what a doctor would have been making.  Eight years of college versus on the job training or a two year course, comparable?  I think not.  Anyway, I went into this with realistic expectations and have come out better than I ever would have thought.

No.  You won't make hundreds of thousands of dollars, but if you work hard you will make a very descent living.  Anyway, sorry...I just get tired of all of the complaining.  Maybe we should just concentrate a bit more on the good and forget a little more of the bad.

Just my humble little opinion.

Know I'll get blasted but......
Kids nowadays have run amok.  Have you ever seen a mother in the store trying to cajole her kids into behaving?  It's sickening.
Probably gonna get blasted but just my thoughts....
My thought is do you actually know that the story your husband is true. Maybe the woman was actually calling him and this is just a story he made up to cover his tracks.....maybe that's why he doesn't want you to call her and why he says he doesn't want his friend to know you know b/c it isn't really the friend's friend but actually your husband's "friend". This is just my way of thinking b/c this sounds very suspicious. Then again, I'm just a suspicious person by nature though I have to say I'm usually right about these kinds of things. (hope that isn't the case but I think this is what you suspect too and that's why you're mad). Good luck to ya.
Try the front jack on the front of the CPU if it has one- or on the
it if is not pushed in all the way, sound will only be in one ear.
Never learned it? Hah! I learned it and still didn't like it.

I'm all ears
I am totally frustrated myself and so ready for a change. Trust me, I can relate.
Missing dictations
I also get a patient list from the doctors office. I check off which ones I got voice files for, i.e. which ones I typed. I don't keep track of which names or not checked off. How do I know if that patient just didn't show up for the appointment, walked out without being seen, or if the doctor put off dictating. That's administrative work that the doctors' secretaries do at my client's office. If they can't find something they think he dictated and ask me to look for something or check on something I'll do it because it only takes a few minutes but I don't do all the stuff you're doing.

Practice dictations
I am at a hiatus in my transcription career, but I do not want to lose what I know, or lose my speed.  Is there somewhere you can purchase practice dictation tapes, or digital downloads?  I would prefer digital downloads of voice files if there is such a thing.  Just wondering.
missed dictations anyone?
Does anyone have any real experiences to share with the missed dictations? I would like to buy them but I don't want to if my accuracy might decrease with them due to missed dication. although, I think any of my background noise would be louder than any dictator. But I guess on the other end is where the problem lies.
STAT dictations

Re:  Stat dictations.  Does anyone out there charge extra for STAT dictations that come in during the day so that we have to put aside what we are working on and type a STAT letter/document and send in?  This sort of thing can keep one behind in Turn Around Time if it happens on a regular basis.  If anyone charges extra for STAT dictations coming in, what would be a good fee to charge for these besides the line count?

Downloading dictations (sm)

If you key in alt-ctrl-Z while the first one is loading, it will prevent the other two from downloading from the queue.  When you are ready to submit and do another file, you will need to key in that sequence again to allow the next one to come in.

Assigning the dictations............sm
SO RIGHT:
' The Leads (MTs who assign the work) have to get their lines in, too, and no doubt they're not keeping the ESLs for themselves......'

When I got a lot of crappy dictations in my queue, I complained about this and asked WHO assigns the work, who gets the crap and who gets the good ones.
I was told that it is NOT assigned at ALL, the oldest is picked first out of the pool and so on, and that it is all random and nobody is favored.
Now I read in this post that the Leads (team leads ?) distribute the reports. Who are they? The owners, the supervisors or the QAs?
I had once an argument with a QA about grammar and I was right and she was wrong, and from that moment on I got the crappiest crap of the crap into my queue.

but where do all the CRAPPY VR dictations
come from, then?
I guess, crappy dictators are EVERYWHERE !
Protect ears where you can
I recently bought a new blow dryer that is louder than my old one. I have started putting cotton in my ears while blow drying, and it muffles the high, painful whine. I suddenly have more patience with styling my hair, so I guess it may have been bothering me before this, too, and I didn't realize why I could hardly wait to finish.
definitely UNFAIR. You are our 2nd set of ears and still MTs. NM
.
OMG - My ears are always itchy - I actually
have an "ear itcher" that I keep on my desk - kinda gross, but what can ya do. I thought it was just me. I don't think I could go without them though, I work too much and my ears get sore. I guess I'll try Radioshack and Staples, if not, I guess I'll get them online. Thanks
You could use headphones that go over the ears
over your hearing aids, such as the noise-canceling headphones. I would assume this would work just fine. I don't like to wear my noise-canceling headphones because they get too hot, however.
My aching ears

Hi everyone!  Just wondering if you all have suggestions for inexpensive headphones that don't hurt your ears, but have good sound quality.  I have 2 different ones that I use and I prefer the sound quality of my little "bud" type, but they end up really hurting my ears after several hours of use.  The other are much more comfortable, but I lose sound quality.  I guess I'm looking for the best of both worlds -- oh, and inexpensively, too!!   (I don't ask for much, huh?)

Take care all!

Thirty minute dictations -...
that are actually about 5 minutes, once you get past the ummms, and ahhhs, and talking to the nurse behind you, and listening to other people's conversation, and changing your mind 5 times before the completion of a sentence.  Other then that, I can't think of a thing....ahhh, ummm, go back and change....no....under ROS put....
LOL If VR could transcribe his dictations it would be a miracle!
:-)
Where to find some Sample Dictations?

Anyone know where I can find a few sample dictations, like WAV files, on the internet, along with the completed typed reports.  Need to test job applicants.  Happy Holidays!

Supposedly these are sample dictations.

You left out blank dictations
The ones with no dictations - I have a feeling doctors probably pay the MTSO by dictated minutes - but how about MTSO paying the Transcriptionist who has to waste their time listening to them, signing them off and sending them to QA multiple times a day?
Noone can send you sample dictations, definitely
a breach of confidentiality. You should have learned this in your course.
Right on, JMO. Also, when I have the ability to choose dictations SM
from a list (which I don't have at my current work, darn), I like to gather up all the dictations I can find for bad dictators and do them together to learn that dictator right up front, instead of struggling over months. I'll also use them to put together a template, which if dictation's really horrible will include a whole pack of phrases he/she has been known to use, a grab bag of possibilities to scan over. May sound like a bother to some, but it's a real serenity-saver.
Things that dry you looney during dictations, for example.

I thought after seeing on television so much could get away from this but just had a dictator say, "drowsy and unable to, you know, respond to questions appropriately."

I thought the you know, you know, you know would not come through on here.

and most of them have cellphones stuck in their ears. nm

Unfortunately, it will fall on deaf ears.
But give it a shot.

Sorry no wonder you are so down on being a Transcriptionist as it is evident you have problems spelling.
magots in the groin and ears....

Ears now beat red and they are off for good.

My ears are not beat red and killing me.  I love the NC and they help quite ambient noise even with the feature off but wowzers.  Back to my cheapos for me.  I may try the Koss headphones and see if they are any better.  Hubby is not working so he gets to do all the running. He is going to kill me.

In dictations, I always hear "as well as" when "and" would do. sm
"At this point in time." What does that mean? One says "At this particular point in time." Raises the line count but it is annoying.
Saving dictations on flash drive??
Hi again,  I figured out the settings, and how to recover the files marked done.  Question though on saving the actual dictation.  My files come through email, I was saving in My Wav files and an Archive File; however, the doc tends to send me a lot of duplicates which the Archive obviously does not like. But, also, since I have had a computer crash on me and lost some things, I am thinking of saving my actual dictations on a flash drive and eliminating the Archive file. How long would you suggest I keep them for?  Once typed they go in the Recover folder, how long should I keep those? I found in the help information that we can order foot pedals through Express Scribe and they will be sure that they work with their program, so I ordered one today - figure can't work without a pedal so best have a spare on hand.  Anything I might be missing? Tips or ideas in using the program.
hosp acute care dictations..please sm
Are hospital dictations difficult to type? I have always typed various specialities for clinics. The company I just started working for lost the account I was hired for. They did offer me a position to type for the hospital dictations. Do you think it will be a rough transition for me? Any advice please! Thanks.
I had one who like to do his dictations with a Donald Duck voice. nm

Legal dictations usually are multiple speakers
But, legal dictations usually have a longer TAT.
I think doctors in general just don't care about their dictations... sm

I know there are some who are really great and are careful or even just considerate.  But I think for the most part they just think it's a pain to do and want to rush through it and get it done... let the lowly MT deal with whatever garbage comes out the other end.  Maybe I'm a bit bitter, but at this point that's how it feels.

Disclaimer: No need to critique spelling, grammar, or punctuation within my posting... this isn't work, it's a message board.

I have real hearing loss (30%) in both ears and
was recommended to get 2 hearing aids, but did you ever price those things? 1200 for one? So I got one. I barely use it. I can't use it for work as it isn't small enough to accomodate the headphones. But since I got on DEP, the only good thing about it is the voice comes through the speaker right into my headset so I actually have to turn it DOWN. I was evaluated and wanted to hear so bad that it was work related but they say mine is congenital, and with a little digging into my family's history I realize that it is. I do know plenty of MTs, however, who do have credible hearing loss with no other factors. I mean, come on, how could you not? The secret is to keep the volume as LOW as you can stand it to try and avoid any loss. I also have terrible ringing and think that is job related.
My daughter is 17 and has never wanted her ears pierced!
She has always been involved in sports and would have to take them out during a game or put a band-aid over them. I wanted that to be something she wanted, and she has never wanted her ears pierced. For prom we bought clip-ons and they looked pretty nice. I was afriad they would be tacky. She might want to get them pierced before next prom but, again, that will be HER decision.

snot suckers, in our ears, like they don't know we hear that

Harder on my eyes than my ears but I find it hard to

believe that listening to dictation could cause hearing loss.  Blasting music through headphones maybe, but not dictation.  I've been doing this for 20 years and have not noticed any difference in my hearing.

However, my eyes get soooooo tired.  I've started zooming in to make the print look bigger and that helps a lot.

Once a week, I clean my headset ears with alcohol.
Then swab out my ears after showering with Q-tips with alcohol on them. Keeps the itching down to nothing, and the ear wax doesn't build up that way, either.
Ears itch b/c of ear sponge bacteria (mine did)

Take off the sponges and clean the actual headset with rubbing alcohol damply applied to a towel, then replace the sponges.  Do this periodically.  Also, replace the sponges every month or so, especially in hot weather.

I have a pair of the earbuds (cheap ones) and they hurt my ears.
I couldn't wear them very long.
One of my accts is in Baton Rouge and just today getting a few dictations trickling in. nm

My ears are feeling so horrible that I can't stand the feel of my headphones.
I have URI symptoms, saw the doc yesterday.  Has anyone ever not used their headphones and used the speaker instead.  I'm concerned that I won't be as accurate.  Any suggestions for me?  Thanks.
Actually it's years to ears. I can spell just fine, just don't take the time to proofread eve
post as I'm busy transcribing at the same time.  Sorry to say my priorities are such that you guys here don't rank perfect posts.  Now, if you guys want to pay per post....
