These are basics. All of you should know
this. I have seen this type of work from people who have maybe only worked for one facility and been at the same facility for over 20 years and these people call themselves veteran MTs. That's how some veteran MTs do not pass tests. No one told them...BUT now that someone is telling you...listen. Get the necessary reference books and listen. It's your chance to grow and you might think these emails to be petty, but these emails are what QA is paid to do. They are paid to help an MT learn the rules and be uniform in what is transcribed. Are you just working for the service you do work for and not the hospital? If so, I would only be concerned about your work and the accuracy of your own work and the way you were doing it is not accurate.
Personally, I liked getting the basics that you always need (SM)
Diapers, diapers, and more diapers, wet wipes, burp cloths, baby soap.
I like to get a basket and just put a lot of little stuff in it that I know they will need like the stuff above and then maybe a bib or diaper rash ointment, bottle brush, etc.
I would show them the basics...
as far as headings, which abbreviations not to use, bold or no bold, caps or no caps, etc., and I might as go as far as making a list of the account specifics or print up 1 report outlining the headings, caps, bold, etc. and basically, I would have them transcribe what they hear and set up by following the account specifics and make their own templates. I wouldn't have it to where they could get on the computer and copy and paste a template. I would print one report on paper and save all my files in a folder and set a password so no one can open it. Sounds mean... not really to them maybe..., but you had to start from scratch so that is the only way to learn is to start from scratch and there are no free rides anymore. So they could either start from scratch following the account specifics and transcribe their own templates like you did or they can just get over it!! :)
Understanding the basics.
First, it would help if you understood the basic terminology. Spend some time reading the Help file in Word. Simply put, you insert the information, give it a bookmark name, and then insert a reference to that bookmark in the correct location(s) throughout your document. Jumping between the fields is something that you do using a form; more info on that in the Word help files. There's just too much information to post here. Spend some time playing around with it before making your template. (There are a couple are other options that you may come across that may help to automate your work for you, like the ASK field.)

Would there happen to be any website with the basics on how to make macros?
I'm great at remembering my shortcuts and making templates, but I have no idea how to make macros.
