left leg were going numb and now my thumb is twitching. Ya know how you have your thumb poised above the space bar, well whenever I pause my typing my thumb twitches slightly and softly taps the space bar. I keep rubbing my hand hoping it will stop. Anybody else have this problem?
Maybe I'm getting to old to be an MT anymore. Been doing this for almost 14 years and never so much as had a headache. Now within the last year, I have head, neck and shoulder problems with muscle spasms and tightness, my rear end problems, and now this! Frustrating to say the least!

Numbness, twitching, pain......sm
I have been at this for 30+ years and have just about had it, my poor body, I am ashamed to tell you all the aches and pains I have. In fact, I have been considering trying to file for my disability. Has anybody ever done this and gotten it due to falling apart after many years of transcribing?

never get out into the real world. I came from a hospital and I KNOW what EMR is all about and how savvy the docs are with computers. Your comment was offensive.
Auto accident - rear -end
we don't think we should give a "recorded" statement to the other car's insurance company. Advice.
In a rear-end 1 year ago, the 24th,
In my state, you have 4 years to settle. But, what they are offering is X amount LESS the 5000 in medical bills, WRONG,is not happening. Until they begin to talk "new money", a settlement is not going to happen. The guy totaled a brand new car, had 13 days. Good luck, but would never settle until all pain is gone and medical bills have been paid, wait until it is getting close to the 2 year limit.
Lice is a pain in the rear (and head) sm
My kids have had it before and what a tedious job it is to get rid of and make sure it stays away. Daily vacuuming of furniture, beds, etc. I took any and all stuffed animals and just stuck them in garbage bags for a month (they say 2 weeks, but I like to be safe). I looked for nits every day (brings new term to nit picking). I also used vinegar with the combing as it seemed to loosen up any remaining nits.
The dirty hair theory appears to be true, so I started using hair gel on my kids' heads, but we also have moved in the meantime, and they haven't had it since. The school district where we were seemed to have a huge outbreak at least twice a year.
Ignore QA long enough and you may find yourself out on your rear.

A Time to Kill proabably--- have lots more of course that rank up there, many are old movies as my mom got me into them.
I agree with GATrans below. Don't trust him. He may be covering his own rear end. Either he
gives you the number and lets you do with it what you will or he loses your trust. It could be that he is making this whole story up to cover up the fact that this woman may call again on his cell phone. Men are snakes at times. Don't be a fool. My ex-husband was calling his girlfriend on our cell phone and telling me that it was the number of a woman who had a van for sale. He was in the used car business so it was a plausible explanation. Too bad for him that I have a suspicious nature, wrote the number down and kept it for posterity. A few weeks later my husband's friend (who's wife was a friend of the girlfriend) called from this number and it showed on my caller id. Too much of a conincidence for me. Maybe your husband is honest Abe and you trust him completely, but there is no such thing as perfect, and most women whose husbands have had affairs, never saw it coming. You can call me a cynic, but I'll never be a fool again and I hate to see other women be fooled.
And don't listen to the Pollyannas below you telling you that you are overreacting and that you should calm down. Utter nonsense. You have every right to be angry. You have every right to want that person's phone number and to call her telling her to never call again. And, if I were you, I'd be calling this friend of your husband's and letting him know what you think of him and threaten to tell his wife. The friend has no respect of his wife or marriage and so you can bet he has no respect for you or yours. Who cares if your husband loses him as a friend. He doesn't really need friends like that anyway!
Marriage is hard and you have to fight to keep it going. So fight.
Is there engineer week? Astronaut week? Veterinarian week?

One for the thumb!!! nm

I know what you mean about the thumb.
I also stretch my wrists, hands, fingers often and it helps a lot!
I agree, my right thumb too, cause it's the
My right thumb aches constantly, sometimes to the point of almost a burning feeling. I know it's because I use this thumb only for the spacebar!
thumb w/ mind of its own
I just recently noticed that my left thumb likes to extend when I use that hand to type. It is not to the point of being sore or achy, but it is feeling kind of stressed. I don't know of any other way to describe it. Does anybody have or has had the same issue? How do I make it stay down? Help!
thumb issue
I was thinking that might be it. I do not have an ergonomic keyboard as of yet. I might want to get one pretty quick. I did try buddy taping it to my index finger and hand earlier. That seemed to help too, but took a little getting used to.
my thumb issue was due to
De'Quervans? (I'm not going to look it up right now) tendonitis. It's located on the side of your wrist by your thumb. Mine got pretty nasty, had to go the route of cortisone injections then finally surgery but 7 yrs out and no more issues or pain.
thumb problems
It could possibly be DeQuervain's tenosynovitis. I had it. I was in a lot of pain for a long time. Finally had surgery after several cortisone injections and physical therapy. All better now, though. Good luck.
thumb issue
it is DE Quervain's, I know because I do PT reports. Whether or not this is my problem, we'll find out. I have an ergonomic keyboard coming, as I am not going to mess around with this. I did put a hand towel under my wrist pad. It is helping for now. At least, I don't have to buddy tape. That's a pain. lol. Pun intended!
Actually the ones I have do not have fingers, just a thumb.
I really love them, There is a strap around the wrist to adjust the tightness, but the neoprene is a great fabric that seems to work really well for me. I hate to recommend anything because sometimes what is good for one is not so good for another. I would recommend going to a surgical supply store and they should let you try them on, that is what I did.
Thumb soreness
Anybody have any remedies to help with sore thumb. My thumb is constantly sore from hitting the space bar. The longer I type, the more my thumb is tender. Any suggestions to soften the blow to the space bar
A good of thumb is 30%, that should cover everything.

My rule of thumb is a $100 minimum
Of course, closer relatives and friends receive more, but always at least $100 for graduations, wedding gifts, etc. when someone is an acquaintance.
ExText-sore thumb
Does anybody have trouble with a sore left thumb from doing speech recognition in ExText? I have been doing it now for 5 months and have constant pain in my thumb. Just wondered if there was a better way of doing it.

My E key keeps falling off!
I have worked in quite a few hotel rooms also. In fact, I would not consider one job recently because they could not guarantee an internet platform but were still using phone lines for some accounts.
The Sky is Falling
Please read my post (Slave Wages). As I explained Medquist is paying 5 cpl with voice recognition. Even if one were to produce 10,000/week or 200 lines/day, that would not be enough to live off, especially for a person like me with a daughter. You can laugh it off. Remember they did the same thing to Noah. Keep lowering your prices until you are at 1 cent per job. It will be the best for everybody!!
that sky has been falling since the 80s -
and it hasn't caved yet. Not going to happen - not TOTALLY.
But a backup might be right for you.
Rule of thumb - THERE'S NO FREE LUNCH
If you don't want to do much, don't expect to make much. That's just the way it is.
Rule of thumb in the NE is October & April when
the time changes. Daylight Savings starts in April and Standard Time in October. It always works for me. Change all the clocks and change all the batteries.
For those who haven't done so yet, though, better get changing.
Left thumb backspace keyboard
I can backspace with my left thumb and space forward with my right thumb. No reaching up with my pinkie to the backspace key at top right. It's called an "Erase Ease" I think. Let's me fly.
But it isn't a "rule of thumb" anymore...Carla is right...sm
Bella, it's not a "rule of thumb" anymore. That was before the advent of word processing software. Word and WordPerfect do automatically adjust the spacing at the end of a sentence to make it more readable and pleasing to the eye. The only reason so many companies still ask that it be done is because that USED to be the norm in the time of typewriters and that's what we learned from Gregg. Companies I work for who are newer generations and know about the ins and outs of Word and WordPerfect know that they adjust automatically in order to put a clear, able to see, nice looking space at the end of a sentence.
However, with this being said, the original poster should still ask her contractor/client/company what they prefer. It is never left up to us unless we're the owner of the contract and developed the template or format ourselves. Especially if it's an MT account that pays based on character lines. Some would say that extra space is no big deal, but just how many Keystrokes do you think that is in a day hitting that extra space after a period? Maybe enough to make up about 10 extra lines or so? Probably. I'd rather get paid than not if they don't want you doing it and you are anyway.
Soooooo, after my ramble....always ask your supervisor, etc.
DG
Is it at the thumb base? I had mine x-rayed, and it
NSAIDs and wearing typing gloves seems to help. Also, after the initial 1-2 yrs. of constant pain, it did settle down considerably, now only hurts if I use my hands for twisting, such as opening jars, wringing out wet washcloths or laundry, or using screwdrives instead of a power drill bit to assemble, dissasemble things. I also have a lot of pain riding a bike. I padded the handlebars as much as possible, and try to ride with the the sorer of the 2 thumbs resting on top of the handle bar with my other fingers, not gripping it.
Anyway, good luck, and hopefully it'll settle down in a few months!
Rule of thumb on dictation. A dictated
minute on average takes 3 to 5 minutes to transcribe. So, at the top, 60 minutes of dictation can take up to 5 hours to transcribe. Would not do it for less than $20 personally, and then based on what I do now I would be losing money.
Falling asleep...
I don't even need the alarm. I put my head back on the "cushy" part of the chair, tell myself "okay, I need 5 minutes," and I'm out like a light and will wake up 5-6 minutes later! I think the sheer boredom of what we do has a hypnotic effect on some of us and causes this. But you're right, when you wake up you're okay for awhile until the next time, whether it's 1 hour later or 4 or whatever. Glad I'm not the only one.
falling wages...
Unfortuntely, it is true, falling wages for MTs and experience plays not part in it. But, there is a reason for it....as we all are aware, hospitals have chosen to cut their debt by outsourcing medical transcription to India for 1/4 the cost it would be to pay us here in the states. Let's face it...MT jobs here in the states will soon be absolete, and thinking about the wages ever getting better, forget. My advise is for all MTs to seek another source of income before it is too late....i.e. perhaps going back to school or seeking one of the higher paying jobs or at least equal to medical transcription such as Walmarts, Meijers, restaurants, etc...and eh...even get medical benefits, vacation time, etc....I currently receive none of that from my employer and was also told to take a pay decrease as of this 12/02...along with everyone else, so was paying us 10 cents per line, but little trick to that, lines are 70 characters per line with spaces included....everyone does 65 characters with spaces...now from 10 cents to 9 cents and 70 characters per line...hmmmm, I figure I am making 8 cents a line now. Yes indeed, I am out of transcription after 25 years coming this income tax refund check. Transcription has become a degrading job!
Falling off trampoline
They don't have to fall the trampoline to get hurt. They break bones, twist muscles, tendons, on impact with the trampoline. If they hit the coils that hold the trampoline onto the frame and the coil comes loose, they can suffer puncture wounds to the eyes or other parts of their body.
People need to teach safety measures to their kids when they are on a trampoline and never leave them unsupervised on it. It can be fatal.
I am just not worried about VR, EMR, the sky falling and on and on
If the entire medical field goes kerplunk, all you can do is pick yourself off, get another job really fast and heave ho. What else? I have had 2 jobs pulled out from underneath me and I am still here. You can make it also. No use in worrying. I lost a very profitable job to outsourcing years ago and now don’t worry about the fate of Mting.
falling asleep
Yes. I have it also, but mine is a health issue due to not sleeping post laminectomy syndrome. I have found that eating hot chips and/or eating crushed ice really helps. Above all since you are healthy, agree with the others see a doc. Hope this helps in the meantime.
My left thumb is the only "finger" I don't use, carpal tunnel is bad enough already.nm

Yep. I was falling asleep sitting up.
I went to the neurologist, and he put me on Provigil. Works pretty good. I'm also switching to an earlier work shift.
My snowflakes are just little falling x's today. Is it just me? nm
5-year marriage falling apart
I need some very serious advice. I have been thinking of leaving my husband for the last year and it is only getting worse. I am so unhappy and don't see it getting any better. He is a great father (we have a 4-year-old), but he has a very limited relationship with my 11-year-old. His real father lives states away and has just recently decided to be somewhat a part of his life. It breaks my heart when my son tries with my husband and he gives a half-hearted attempt or barely acknowledes my son and then pays all this attention to my daughter. This is just the tip of the iceberg. I basically do everything by myself with the kids, he dislikes my family (I'm not very fond either, but hey, they are my family) so I usually attend family functions on my own w/ the kids.
I think we should at least try marriage counseling and take it from there. I am only giving this another 6-12 months though. I deserve a husband who accepts me for me and helps me clean because he realizes I need help, not becuase he can't stand the mess anymore. My son deserves a loving, caring step-dad who will take him fishing or practice baseball with him. Am I making the right choice? When do you know it is the right time to move on? I am so scared. The biggest factor will be raising 2 kids on my own. I am making squat right now.
I need some advice. Mom's not home and I am ready to cry my eyes out.
I made the mistake of falling for that
pitch in 2004 when I applied at TRS. When I left one month later because they kept running out of work and bouncing me around, I learned to disregard any endorsements.
As it was later explained to me, the award is based on employee votes. Depending on how many people vote, it can be determined by just a handful of people. Hardly a ringing endorsement...
Falling ON the floor with that one! LOLOL!!!!

Falling asleep at the keyboard
I wondered if anyone has any tips for me. I have been an MT going on six years. Suddenly, whenever I am typing, I am drifting off to sleep (and somehow still typing?). I have tried background noise, getting up and stretching, walking, drinking, eating so much I've gained weight, nothing works! As soon as I start typing, I relax and can't hold my eyes open. Finally, I take a nap but my line count is really taking a hit. This has gone on for several months. I do not believe it is a health issue - I have always been healthy as a horse. I think it is bordom or lack of mental challenge? I really can't see myself moving on to another career. Help! I need to stay awake! Anyone else have this problem?
falling asleep at the keyboard
Actually, I do. If I am a passenger I cannot stay awake. If I am driving, I realize I am halfway where I am going and cannot remember anything leading up to that point (such as lights, stop signs) like I am on autopilot. Maybe I should see a doctor. I appreciate all the responses.
Had a Sony hand control years ago, then my thumb killed me! nm

Typically this week is a slow week in lots of places
because it is a big vacation week. Typically things slow dow a bit in the summer too because people are putting off elective surgery, but at the same time lots of people going on vacation so it should balance out.
Lowest runs $900 week, highest $1400 week (sm)
Get paid 12 CPL. Been doing transcription for about 12 years.
not about sex, about falling in love with a person's spirit
He can still procreate with any woman, but if he feels urges towards men, well thats nature.
