What do you do when your wrists ache and your hands weigh a ton but you have to keep typing?

I know I have read posts on here before regarding this topic but I can never find them in the archives.  Besides a different keyboard, is there something you can take like a vitamin or different foods that will help?  I have noticed that if I eat potatoe chips, my hands are stiff the next morning.  Is there a certain brace or splint you can buy that you can wear when not working or do you even wear these when working?  I thought I saw some magnetic splint somewhere.  I am not like this every day, just some of the time but when I am, it is very frustrating.

Sorry meant discrimination and reverse-discrimination. My typing got ahead of my brain! nm
sorry for the typo but my heart was in the right place. :)
dontcha just detest those eye rollers?....nm

I appreciated your post just now but dontcha...

I appreciated what you just said in this post about union/organizing/mts....however, I think most of Americans are like this, not just MTs.

In this country, it seems to me (and I'm 3rd-4th generation), it's all about the individual and their pocketbook(s), finding a rare person who does actually  think globally or universally.

I feel this way politically too....for 6+ years people are complaining, moaning, and groaning about the govt - but not a single person would challenge same govt, only challenging with words and not actions (not enough actions) - so they will continue to moan and groan, not getting off their duffs and doing anything REAL.

just my nickel's worth.....

Dontcha just love the way the ads are related to the topic in the posts?
Freaky.  I have AOL with an animated character.  When I am in an IM, the dog actually reacts with sad cry when I type the word "sad,"  and happy reaction with "lol."  All the rest of the emotions coincide with my typewritten text.  I find that to be rather unsettling.  They basically are reading what we are typing out there, somewhere.
dontcha love it? I don't listen to a physician spelling.

Stomach ache
I took my daughter to our doctor because of similar problems.  She said that at that age up through teen years, constipation is a major problem because kids just don't eat like they should be.  She suggested more fiber in her diet, and that has made a HUGE difference.
My worst ache is my jaw!

For some bizzaro reason I tend to clench my teeth when I type...I don't notice it until AFTER the nauseating ache settles in.  I have found that if I put a piece of gum inbetween my molars to stick the bottom jaw to my top teeth, I don't have that bad of a problem.  It's almost so bad I want to put a huge elastic band around my head to keep my jaw clenched shut so I don't have to worry about it.

No other aches and pains thankfully...I do try to get up and stretch a lot and shake out my wrists...an old habit picked up in typin' class from back in the day!

you are so very welcome. Everything I'm hearing makes me ache for you,,, but if they can pay you
Keep using us to bounce things off of... Sometimes just talking lets you sort stuff out. I know, talking to my girlfriends, then I go home and sleep on it and wake up feeling like something was right about what I said, or some parts were burned around the edges and should be changed somehow. Keep talking, keep in touch, keep pulling in all the info you need. Somebody did a study in the recent past re: decision making. They found that people who thought and thought and thought and THOUGHT about decisions, versus people who went on their gut feeling and slept on it and just did what felt right for them... Between the 2 groups, better decisions were made by the gut feeling group. I think that's where you are conflicted. Your gut is telling you to take that kind of job, and your head is fighting you.

Best wishes. Take care of yourself.
thanks for all the tips---so far so good--ache some but not in any agony
spine is a little sore along with shoulders and lower back and my jaw is sore too which is weird (figure I grinded my teeth last night due to stress.....do that when extremely stressed, luckily I do it rarely). Very mobile though just worn out!
My Headache

Did anyone ever work three jobs just to try to make it as an MT?  I have an office job during the day (NOT MT) work and I work as an IC and I just got a job working part time for another national.  Until my speed work catches up with my accuracy what I'm I suppose to do?  I'm so tired and so frustrated and i refuse to quit as I enjoy the MT work but I'm so tired...

Does anyone who has experience have any advice?

Wow what a headache
I was on a good Account and my company lost the account so I started a new job and my line count went from 800 in six hours to a 100 today.... I could not understand the dictators at all.... ugh
Your headache
That does not sound like my migraines, but that is not to say that it isn't one. With the hand tingling and neck stiffness, well, let me just say, I would go to the hospital just to be sure what was going on. Just my opinion, but you don't seem to be in any condition to type, let alone live, if it were me, I'd go.
Mass affect on brain or mass effect on brain?

Rebound Headache
A couple of things.  Do you take hormone pills, use hormone patches or take injections?  Also, has your doctor or are you keeping track of your blood pressure.  My doctor once thought that I was having rebound headaches from a narcotic medication that I was taking - as it turned out it was due to taking Premarin and this causing my blood pressure to spike.  The first headache sent me to the emergency room - now we know it is my blood pressure and I take two meds for that (down from 5) and this has helped - clonidine, especially.  Also have a pheochromacytoma which is located in my lungs (can't resect) - and this causes me to have headaches at times, as well.  I have found that fiorinal with codeine is the only thing that suppresses these headaches - if I take it within about 15-20 minutes after I feel one coming on.  Also multiple chemical sensitivities can cause this type of headache.  I would check with another doctor - a rebound headache shouldn't last that long.
i had a headache for seven months
they have all of these medications for migraines, but tension headaches go unnoticed.  so, after seven months of what i thought was an untreatable headache (aside from the toxic levels of motrin i was taking), i went to see my doc.  he started me on Mobic and Zanaflex and, wow, no more headaches.  the first day was like heaven, what a relief.  i had forgotten what normal felt like.  now, maybe only one to two headaches a week instead of daily.  talk to your doc.  this is a really good combination for me.  hope this helps --- feel better soon.
Honestly, I send my kids to public school. They've never had a belly ache either.

must you be so full of yourself?

Oh my goodness!!!! The headache clinic
setting, but I elected not to do it. My insurance would not cover it after the study, and it would be about $2000 per year, about 30 injections every three months - I thought I'd try another route first. Wow. I really hope that you get relief. How interesting to transcribe for a headache clinic. I would love to hear those reports.
I believe you are my QA headache -- English degree -- uh la la nm

Vista gave me a headache yesterday

So I have to vent about my first serious problem that I had with Windows Vista (I won't bother mentioning the little things). We all had to uninstall and upgrade a program for work this week in order to continue working properly, which sounds pretty easy. But noooooo. I couldn't do either, and I spent hours on the computer trying to figure it out yesterday. I didn't get any work done! Finally my wonderful hubby came home from work (who happens to be my own computer geek) and after 1 hour got everything running for me.

The problem? VISTA. Apparently other Vista users have had a similar error message that is somehow triggered by Adobe Acrobat 8 (which stopped working yesterday). It was blocking my ability to uninstall and upgrade my particular program. Nevermind that I tried uninstalling some other useless stuff on my computer with great success just to make sure I wasn't crazy. I NEVER would have figured out that one on my own. Who knew? Once again Vista is stupid, stupid, stupid, and it makes me want to throw things.

I cannot wait until the new Windows comes out, whenever that will be. I hope it is soon because I am upgrading the first day it is available. Any one else have some good stories about how Vista has ruined your working day?

I agree. Do you remember the 1970s with a 70% tax rate? Gives me a headache... nm

Well I have a chronically stuffed up head, irritated throat and headache and I am getting sick of
it. Dont know if it is allergies or sinuses. I dont want to be taking antibiotics because mostly they dont help but I wish I knew what to use to help this. It gets old and tiresome. My throat feels sore and hurts. I always sound like I have a cold and I dont.
My husband is sensitive to smells, he takes Sudafed Sinus which helps him with the headache
I have sensitivity problems too but like you I never know what is going to set me off, I don't get headaches though, I get hives and chills, real fun. Luckily it only happens about once a year and its been about 3 years since my last episode.
Typing. This is NOT typing, it is transcribing. There is a BIG difference. sm
Transcription includes typing, but so much more.
oh please. Put in a brain. Unfortunately your
type of thinking is very common in our field.
Brain surgery... ha....sm

when I thing of some of the doctors I've known over the years, we could probably learn brain surgery before they could learn transcription !

If he had a brain, he'd take it out and play with it

Who needs to use the other side of the brain?

Life is complicated enough for us guys!

open your pea brain :)

he comes from the ghetto, his family still lives in the ghetto, he's trying to help kids in the ghetto......and you want him in a TIE, TUX, and TAILS?  He is dancing for a charity.  That's all he's there for.  To get $$ toward his charity of helping kids in and around the ghetto.

Perhaps you want him to dress like the late Fred Astaire?

Get real.................

Brain spazzm...

Eh, those adapters really were ''gender changers'' (or gender *and* type changers).  Maybe something more like this (what I'd do anyway, if needing to frequently plug and unplug any USB device ... an extender would make that much easier, too):

Ischium now in the brain?!!!

Had to take my son yesterday for a CT of his right ischium, to check for osteomyelitis.  I gave that info to the person on the phone when I made the appointment.  Soooo - get to the imaging place, and get all the myriad forms to fill out; at the top, under 'Test Performed', was 'CT scan of the brain'.  I went back up to the desk to question this of the secretary (who is a retired nurse!!), and she looked at me and actually said 'The ischium is in the brain''!!!!!!!!!!  Told hubbie later, and he said I should have told her, not unless my head was up my ***!

I'm sure the techs would have caught it when they looked at the script from the doc, but still!!!!

brain is not working, the 15% was only the SE tax- sm
still need to pay your state and federal on top of that. I have not sat down and actually figured that out by itself, need to do that though.
Don't know where my brain is today - sm
I am drowning in work, have 200 minutes due by Monday and I am not used to doing more than 60 minutes a day. But I guess 200 rolls of nickels is a bit much, $400, I think a roll is $2.00- but depending on the person they will need at least 50-100 rolls. That is a lot of nickels!
Thanks. The brain gives me problems too (sm)

(in Radiology), but Google helps.  Stedman's Radiology book is great, with all the CTs, MRIs and PET scans of the head.  I'm pretty sure it would help with some head-related Neurosurg.

Since when does anybody get respect for their brain?

I have always "felt unappreciated, underpaid, misunderstood, disrespected, ignored, or taken advantage of as a medical transcriptionist", AND as a typist or clerical staff.  Its the way the cookie crumbles since I'm not a VIP with a suit on and a bunch of fancy letters after my name.

Oh, yeah, I've also felt all that as a wife or girlfriend, because I didn't have the wonderful appendage that causes one to think they're automatically entitled to the best of everything.

On the other hand, I always felt relieved that I didn't have the stress of being as high profile as the more important folk out there.  Like, I'm not the first one they want to sue or pick a fight with, you see.

I don't mind being one of the powers behind the throne.  When I first got into the medical field, it put me in mind of those birds that get on large animals like hippos and pick off their parasites and eat them.  The hippo probably doesn't like carrying a bird on its back all day, but that bird improves its general situation, so it stays.  I suppose that's how all the doctors and CEOs see us, as a necessary evil.  These days, the hippos want to try electronic flea collars (think VR) and other methods to see if they can get the bird off their back.  Sooner or later they will find that the bird isn't so bad, after all.

Once upon a time I thought there was an advocate for MTs - known as AAMT.  They got greedy and bailed, huh?.  Unions are greedy.  Everyone is greedy.

In another incarnation, I had a high-paying job where I was a unionized clerical worker.  I paid big dues to the UAW.  When I needed them, they pretty much bailed, just like an insurance company or the government will do.  They want to take from the group, but they don't want to give to the individual.  I don't really believe in any organization any more, they've never done diddly for me but made a bunch of empty promises and found loopholes when it was time to make good on them.  I'd rather just be a free bird, flying to the hippo that can feed me best.

brain cramp!
Thanks!
half a brain...
Again... I am not trying to win any friends or make any enemies.  If you are happy and have no complaints, that is wonderful.  I was observing and making comments.  Half a brain was not meant as a cut to anyone, simply a figure of speech.
Debbie Matenopoulos. She was no brain. nm

dead brain regarding digital!

Trying to switch all my clients to digital, but first I need some help with it!  Using the free ES wav player.  One of the drs are going to email me the files and the other is going to use a FTP site.  I dont know the first thing about transcribing files "digitally"  Any instructions would be really appreciated!

Thanks ya'all!

What is "O" work? I'm racking my brain trying to
think of what it would be..???

Thx.
You're right. Brain fahrvegnugen.
Thanks.
brain freeze....< is Left......got it? nm
:)
my brain... the older I get I can't remember
anything....
you're right, my brain foot, will need to buy
a cable that will convert 9 pin to USB successfully.
My son also had a traumatic brain injury
Please let me know if you do find the answer to your question. My son, who lives with his father, has become a drug addict. He will not return to school or work; he is only interested in getting his SSI check and whatever else he can get from the government and everybody else. Please let me know if you have any answers. I do know that I went to college with a learning disability (ADHD), and I not only asked the professors to put me in the front and center seat but also had free tutoring for math classes when I needed it (I kept losing my glasses). They offer free tutoring through Student Services for a variety of handicaps. Good luck!
sorry - it's bellsouth.......*lol* - brain stalled..nm

cause is brain going faster than fingers
I don't think there's anything we can *do* about it - except perhaps proof better as we type and/or not type as fast as we are.....it's our own flaw..I think.....and every time I re-read - I find something omitted - so I'm re-reading it all :)
Your brain does not turn to mush?
I find that if I type and type without taking breaks, my brain feels fried. I get so terribly bored. I think it is how repetitive the reports are. How do I stay focused when my brain is dying of boredom? ::bangs head:: I also find when I add speed I make a lot of petty spelling errors and/or typos, no matter how hard I try not to. Those are my 2 challenges.

I would love to be able to do it, as it would certainly meet my financial goals and then some. However, I don't want to have mush for brains all the while turning out crap reports.

I guess that is why I wonder if you are reading behind what you type or if you are watching each word or letter. Do you just think of a word and mindlessly type it? Or do you think of the correct spelling and each letter of the word as you go? I am curious about the details of it. @.@ I know, I am weird. ;)

Thanks for the advice. :)
My brain gets tired at times too, but --sm
I wouldn't call it mush. What I try to do is to really *get into* the report. I take an interest in what the doc is saying about the patient. It helps alleviate any boredom, at least for me. Some of these reports are pretty interesting, if you really listen to them. and no, I don't watch each word or letter I type, but I do watch for errors. I also find that when I try to FORCE myself to be faster, I too make mistakes. Just let that come natural. you do pick up speed over time. Sometimes I even play a little game with myself to see if I can type and keep up with what the doc is saying without taking my foot off the pedal. It is a personal challenge, or sorts, which is another thing to alleviate the boredom. But again, we all have good days and bad days. Sometimes these things don't work for me either, and I find myself coming to this board more often, looking for entertainment. Sometimes you just have to discipline yourself to it, I guess. When I get really bored and don't want to type anymore, sometimes I create a *reward* for myself for when I get done...like, maybe I will think about rewarding myself with a beer when I get everything done and if I get it all done by, say, 6 p.m. That works too, and you know, that beer tastes really good at those times! When things get repetitive, I guess you have to find your own way of alleviating it. these are just some things that work for me. Hope it helps.
wow, my brain is spinning with this info!

i will go over it and read through again when i have more time.

thanks for the info!
