I have scheduled surgery/chemo/RT out of town.

I do not want the word spread too soon as to how I am doing if it is not good as I need to work. It is funny how vultures begin circling when this occurs. I did let my supervisor know as there may be times when I will need to lie down. She is understanding but I realize the bottom line is TAT and if necessary, she will need to bring in another MT to replace me. Though, I have been told it is against the law to fire anyone with a diagnosis of cancer.

Patient has mucositis from chemotherapy. Doc says to rinse with "Shimmel" solution. Anyone ever hear of it?
Yes, but I did not work for almost 6 months during my daughter's chemo -sm
my income drastically tanked from late March through Sept. (I made about $300 a month in that time period), plus I have never worked FT for them (i.e. 90 minutes a day). I am now doing about 75 minutes a day though + an account of my own on the side now, so doing about $2K a month now. So I expect this year to be a bit higher in the income level. Only 1 person works FT for them as far as I know, most people are PT, its all IC so it really does not matter. But there is always work left over every day that wasn't farmed out to somebody to do.....and they are getting new doctors every day which is great I think.
I was transcribing a surgery once, the surgery was over and the doctor was dictating
from anesthesia yet.  Anyway, the surgeon dictating stopped dictating and said "Hey Mary - is this one big enough for you?"  It was obvious he was talking about the patient's PENIS!  I thought HOW EMBARRASSING!  I hope they didn't make fun of my anatomy when I got my tubes tied!
New job first, save sick time, then surgery or surgery first?

I’d like to go back to medical secretary work.  I’ve had cortisone shots in my ECU tendon 3 or 4 times and was warned not to have too many or my tendon could rupture.  It’s been very weak for a year or so and my left wrist is smaller than my right wrist.  I can’t type at all with my left pinky so I think it’s ruptured.  I have Word auto correct and Instant Text set up so I very seldom type As, Qs, or Zs.  I haven’t had surgery because I have my own account, no subs, a DD in college to support, and no disability insurance and didn’t want to take time off work for surgery.  I do have medical insurance though my DH.

I’m debating whether to get a job, save up sick time, and have the surgery while getting sick time pay or have the surgery first without any sick time pay.

I’ve done medical secretary work before.  I figured if I use Word there I can save their Auto Correct and transfer mine.  If they use EMR, I can make my own shorts to stay away from Q, S and Z.  I could only accept a job where I don’t type for more than an hour straight, which is what I do now.  Then I started worrying about what if I have to use someone else’s computer?  What if I unexpectedly have to type more than an hour?

I think I have cold feet about getting a job outside the home after over 7 years at home AND I’ve had cold feet about having surgery!  Can someone help me think this through logically?  I can’t think straight when my feet are cold.

Yeah, and 100 on Wednesday when I get to sit in an exam room for 4 hours for Jen's chemo so that
will be fun....the lobby/waiting/play room is always very hot normally, the exam rooms a bit stuffy but not as hot, and the large chemo/waiting room (when you don't need to see the doc) is always very comfortable and cool. I just hope the AC is cranking well throughout the office. I don't want us to roast the 4+ hours we will be there! ---luckily the heat wave is supposed to snap on Thursday and drop down to 85.
Surgery/Plastic Surgery Transcription
Hello. I am considering taking a position in the field of plastic surgery. Can anyone recommend a way to pick up on the terminology FAST?
Did get ti scheduled
I had received 2 authorizations, one with CMTB and one with CMTC, finally heard back this morning that to get the discount I needed to use CMTC. Don't take mine until the 22nd, but good luck on yours, keep us posted.
Thanks. I'm only scheduled for 35 hours, but have been
working a lot lately as there is so much work and an extra 5 hours of OT would sure be nice.
Yep, I am scheduled to work Tuesday
through Saturday, so I worked Thanksgiving day. Then I ran out of work yesterday after less than 3 hours on my shift because of the greedy MTs who took Thursday off with pay and now want the extra money they are getting by taking my lines. They will get a really nice paycheck and I will get less than usual. So not fair!!!
I work Mon-Sat, but only scheduled for M-F. Need the extra $. nm

I've scheduled mine too (sm)

On my authorization letter to test it said CTMC and so I registered for test C on the Prometric site.  I paid $150 with the current discount.  Hopefully that is all that is necessary for you too.  Good luck getting it figured out and good luck on the test.  Mine is scheduled for December 11th!  :)

I got lucky this year. Scheduled off is Sunday. :)

Not so lucky last year. I took on this job knowing that my scheduled work days were just that, holiday or not, and I've never minded.

I do ask for time off well in advance if I want it and the 2 companies I work for have never had a problem.

scheduled days, I work 'em.....nm

I have started many jobs with the undertanding that I already have time off scheduled. sm

Most companies who need MTs need them on a chronic basis.  If they find a "good hire" they will usually work with your upcoming time off or let you start after your time off.  I would be looking.  More people look at the first of the year because of benefits, so you might get a jump on them.

Do you work outside your scheduled hours to get extra lines?
Or do you stick to your schedules and just roll with however many lines you make during that time?
If employee, work the scheduled shift and complete the 8 hours. nm

Forced to work scheduled shifts..no flexibilty..what gives??? So frustrated.

I started MT two years ago for a medical clinic of about 100 doctors.  I am now working at home.  I get paid hourly 10.50/hour.  My employer will NOT let us work flexible shifts.  I have to work a standard 8 hour shift with a one-hour lunch break that is unpaid.

I got into this field because I wanted to work from home and have FLEXIBILITY.  I have a toddler under the age of 4 and when I interviewed and shared my reasons for wanting to work at home (my children) I was told I was a "great fit" and then I get in my home and am told there is ZERO flexibiity and I have to work 8 hours straight just like in-house people!  This is extremely stressful for me having a small child and I don't make enough money to afford daycare.

I started working with Medquist part-time for extra money and AGAIN I was told I would have to work a set shift, with no flexibility.

Where are the jobs that you guys have where I can work my own hours?  Sitting here typing 8 hours straight everyday with a demanding toddler is starting to wear on me, but I need this job badly.

What gives? I thought the nature of working at home with MT is flexiblity and every job I've applied for in MT has given me NONE.

I would charge more per line for working holidays or if asked to work scheduled days off. SM
But did you address that in your contract?
Maybe in their town.
I can' t say but I can tell you with line rates and incentive pay, I make over 65K at the medical center where I transcribe, located in Nebraska.
Not in my town.
The patient sitters at the local hospital here are not licensed personnel, not even CNAs.  Generally, a high school diploma and short orientation with CPR is all that is required as far as training or credentials.  Also, the usual pre-employment stuff is required--drug testing, preemployment physical, etc.  It also pays less than $10 per hour.
We have those names in our town too.
nm
Anyone going out of town tomorrow?
I'm going to Cincinnati 2C my sisters! Yikes! Wish me luck...
We have a place like that in town. sm

It's a teeny little grocery store and their prices used to be off the wall because they were owned by a big grocer (IGA). I never shopped there for anything but meat as it is cut right at the store while you wait or it's fresh in the cooler.

When big Wally World decided to build the Superstore the teeny grocery store decided to buy out from IGA and named it their own market. The prices there now are even cheaper than Wally World and I no longer shop anywhere else. What used to cost $75.00 at the local market costs about $30 because they got rid of the "middle man."

They had to save themselves and they did. I can actually walk there if need be and sometimes I should as the teeny parking lot is usually packed full. The checkout girl (or girls if it's busy) don't wear name tags because we know them. They go to school with our kids. It's like, "Hi Megan, still playing soccer?"

Good for them.

mt seminar in my town
There is a seminar about MT in my town tonight and I wanted to go to see what lies they probably are telling. My son's first ball practice is at the same time. I would love to hear what they are saying up there tonight. Most embelish our wages and it is a shame.
Hospitals in town
I hear sometimes that there are still hospitals doing their dictations with their own transcriptionists, and I'm lucky that I found one through their website... but wondering, just how do you find out who does the hospitals in your city? No one ever advertises in the newspapers anymore and most hospital websites have nothing about transcription. I live in a pretty big city with lots of hospitals and clinics and outpatient surgeries. Surely they're not all outsourced to the Big Greedies.
It's really not a great idea to disable Windows updates. Just because updates are scheduled to be
installed, does not mean 7.0 will be automatically installed on your pc.  You will always receive a notification when installing anything other than critical updates, which 7.0 is not.
We have a huge 4 day celebration in our little town

There is something going on from tonight right through until the fireworks on the 4th.  There is a street dance, a bean hole bean supper, a lobster bake and just tons of stuff going on.

Our town is only population 7500, but the celebration has grown to over 30,000 attendees for the 2 hour parade, followed by fun, games, entertainment and music in the park and then fireworks that start at 9:00 and last for hours. It's great fun!

I'm lucky too.  I live just a mile from the festivities, so I'm home for a long time while people are still waiting in traffic. The traffic goes smoothly though.  The events have always been very well organized with our school bus drivers giving free shuttle bus rides.

Happy 4th everyone!

Denver beautiful town
Granola tree huggers??  Sounds good to me..better than cholesterol artery clogged tree destroyers.  My cousin lives in Westminster, another in Estes Park.
What does a gallon of gas cost in YOUR town?
$2.39 here. Northwestern Wisconsin. It is pathetic.
dead town-ban WM stores
A little over 20  years ago WM opened in our town even though they had a Howard's at that time and put them out of business.  Our nice town also had a sporting goods store, fabric store, several pharmacies, several local clothing stores and pool supply place.  The only one that survived were the pharmacies.  WM moved out a little over a year ago.  Now we have to go 30 miles to find anything that we can't find in a dollar store.  Not only do we have a big empty building that they left, now we will have another empty building that a chain grocery store is leaving because WM built super stores in the surrounding towns that use to shop in our nice little town.  I suspect it will take years, if ever, to recover.  Our only hope is that we have good leadership in our community.
Have you taken a course? Do you live in a town/city that - sm
maybe you could get some PRN work or part time work to get your resume started?
Try Googling him with his old address or name in the town he was from - also
I think there is an on-line site called privateeye.com, or something like that you pay a one time fee that could probably dig up all you want to know and more. If you have kids, kick him out (change locks), stay in the house if you have one, document any bruises, cuts, etc, with pictures, tell people, mom, dad, friends about it. My husband ask me before we married if I would ever leave/divorce him and I told my husband only if he hit me (1 x would be all it would take) or cheated on me that I was gone (he cheated on his ex-wife-- not with me, did not know him then and he'd be out on the street, and about $100K poorer at this point)--Good luck and I hope you land on your feet (running).
Yep, very very quiet town. Not much happening there

LOL ... 8 pm central, NBC ... but not in Little Rock or some town nm
in Indiana ... they are not showing it.
get outta town! congrats!

Well I'll probably be stoned and run out of town, but SM

it is the craziest thing I've ever heard in my life, and then asking you to PAY to sit the beta is beyond ridiculous.

For me, the CMT is unnecessary. I have never been without work a day in 25 years. I can work tomorrow if I lose my job today.

I've always said I may not be able to pass it for all I know - it may be over my head. But for me in my life, it is not a thing I've given a moment's thought to in 15 years. Yes, when I was supervisor of transcription at a big hospital, I thought about taking it and was encouraged to do so, but I just never did it.

I don't hold anything against somebody who does take those tests but for me they mean nothing.

Used to use Hand-Eze but can't find in my little town sm
any more. Found "Thergonomic Hand-Aids"
in my local Hobby-Lobby (an arts and crafts store), which is a similar item. I wear them inside out because the seams rub too much on my skin, so inside out is more comfortable.
$2.09 in small-town NE. Seems to have hit a standstill :(

I live in a very small town...
and it is so scary to think about all of this, even here. Just 30 minutes away from us this week they put several schools on lock down because there was a "fugitive" on the run. As the other poster said, it is such a scary time when we cannot even feel safe sending our kids to school. I thought living in a small town would be better, but the Amish community issue has quickly changed my mind of that.
Is there a way to find out if new doctors are in town?

It seems I've heard of a website like this before, but just can't remember. Thanks!

Are they in a really small town in Georgia?
NM
Sounds like my small town!
Except we actually have 2 choices, cable internet and then Embarq. Embarq is the only choice we have for phone service.

I got fed up with the cable service and switched a few months ago to Embarq, it has not gone out one single time. I am extremely pleased I switched.
Asheville is pretty town from what I saw
a few years ago, visited the Biltmore. That place is really old inside. When you retire, you can always come to my little piece of heaven. Only draw back I have to here is too many tornado warnings, watches and threatening of tornados. Just don't care for those!
sorry, that is call out of town family and friends, nm

I'm not in CR, I'm in a small south central town. nm

Our small town Wal-Mart doesn't do that.
There is a person at the door in case the buzzer is activated but I have never been asked to show a receipt unless the buzzer has gone off.
Mine doesn't either, and they are not small town, any of them. nm

county vet versus in-town vet. . . I have noticed(sm)
the change over the years since our vet's practice has grown tremendously.  About 20 years ago when they first opened up they had one small converted farmhouse and three doctors.  We live on the suburbs of a small city.  When this vet came into practice there were a bunch of vets in town but everyone seemed to flock to my vets because they were good, inexpensive, really cared, and not pushy about extra services.  HOWEVER, in the last year or two they've built a HUGE new building (basically a small surgicenter), added tons of support staff (at least four gals behind the counter checking people in and out versus one), each doctor has his own "assistant" that comes into the room with him now, there are computers in every exam room, the waiting room is the size of a small hospital lobby, etc., etc.  The minute the building was finished I noticed that prices on basic services (shots, special food, exams) went up.  Then came the push for the "extra" services (blood work, teeth cleaning, etc.)  I only call these services "extra" because before the new building and huge practice the only time anything extra was mentioned was when I had to take in a sick animal and then it wasn't "extra" it was necessary.  Now it seems they're pushing a lot of baseline things that they want us to "think about having done" even though the animals aren't sick.
I don't watch AI, but Bucky is from a nearby town. They
interview Rocky (his twin) on our local Fox channel frequently.  He always has his hair back in a ponytail and it looks much better than what I've seen with Bucky and that hair all loose - and what is it with that wide stance I've seen on the previews.  If it is supposed to be sexy it isn't.  Anyway his brother doesn't seem to be a genius either, but he doesn't come across as a dummy either.   Evidently he sings too and he said that both of them would probably move to Nashville and try to get something going.
