I have medical students spelling every third word, such as N-O-S-E, sometimes twice.

This is how they dictate. The patient's eyes, that is E-Y-E-S, eyes are round, R-O-U-N-D, reactive, and equal, -E-Q-A-U-, I mean E-Q-U-A-L to light. Nose, that is -N-O-S-E, nose, is patent, etc. Funny that these are the ones that usually misspell their names.

It is about halfway down and on the right-hand side. Speller type is above the drop-down box.

Bezoar: Taken from Wikipedia:
bezoar is a mass found trapped in the gastrointestinal system (usually the stomach),[1] though they can occur in other locations.[2][3]
There are several varieties of bezoar, some of which have inorganic constituents and others organic.

For students, not much.
I'd estimate from my own teaching experience that it will take them 6 minutes of transcribing time for every one minute of dictation time. If you give them a 30 minute tape per week, that's approximately three hours of transcription homework per week.
For a real job at eight hours per day, 1,200+ lines per day is usually the minimum rquired. (Which is why they don't hire newbies.) People who do 200-350 lines per hour are very experienced, have the same accounts every day, and use a word expander. It's not representative of the expectations from a student or newbie.
Do the MT schools lie to their students?
On another unrelated board someone asked about medical transcription. I mentioned that pay goes down instead of up because of offshoring reports and isn't the most secure job. She came back and said she asked her teacher about offshoring and she said: "They used to do that but they are sending it back to us now because what the clinics would have to do, is hire someone to edit them and then redo them so it wasn't working out. They talk about it at every advisory board meeting apparently." Hmmmm, okay.
Just wondering.
Hmmm. If the students are children,
maybe pretending they're naked isn't such a good idea. Telling anyone that you pretend they're naked is a really bad idea.
Students get a hefty discount
If you're in continuing education, could you still call yourself a student? I don't know, but when I bought it, I just had to tell them I was a student and I got a discount.

I would buy new a Dorland's Medical Dictionary, Stedmans Medical and Surgical Equipment...SM
and Tessier's The Surgical Word Book, 3rd edition. Books you could buy used I would say would be Stedman's Pathology and Lab Medicine and Cardiology/Pulmonary word book. These are all the books I use the most during my day. You could buy other speciality word books as you need them and could probably go used with those.
I wouldn't bother with buying a drug book, new editions come out every year and I just stick to the FDA website and RXList as my drug references.
Also FYI, not a book, but I use my Stedman's Electronic Medical Dictationary a lot. It's easier to open the program than it is to pick up a huge 30-pound dictionary.
Medical Transcription In The Era Of Electronic Medical Records
EMR has revolutionized the healthcare industry in recent times. Many experts felt that EMR & Voice Recognition would totally replace Medical Transcription - however; the industry soon realized that transcription has certain advantages over point & click charting and many physicians preferred to dictate notes rather than document the data at the point of care themselves.
When I go to New MT/Students board I am taken to the Abbreviations board. NM

spelling
I believe you mean 'almighty'. The way some of you people mispell basic words, I'd hate to see the transcription work you do.

it is plasma PEROX. Perox is an acronym, therfore some people do all caps and some people just put perox. if you do Google search for plasma perox you will find it.
Is doc spelling it out, i.e., A-L-M-A? sm

SPELLING OUT or not.
Okay, I was taught to spell out everything under 10, but I am hearing that is wrong. Was I taught wrong or did it change or am I doing it right.
Thanks in advance!
spelling
I used to have a doc that kept spelling N-A-R-E when he wanted one nostril and I kept putting NARIS. I am sure he thought I was wrong. I wonder if he had a TESTIS or a TESTE.
doc's spelling sm
Oh yes, have had simple English words spelled, but never anything like an eponym from some dead surgeon that is 17 letters long!
Spelling

spelling
Spelling is and has always been my weakest link. I've been a Transcriptionist for nearly 10 years. Knowing my short coming, I over compensate. When I first started I had a dictionary and medical speller in each hand. Of course there was spell check too. Transcription can be done even with the character flaw of not being able to spell. Remember, I'm the one who transcribed for the FBI before computers, word and spell check. You just have to be certain everything is spelled correctly before you hit "send." Go for it Mom. I'm living proof it can be done, and I'm not only a Mom and grandma, but I recently applied for social security.
Spelling...sm
I have been known to use the incorrect word from time to time on this website, but I can tell you that in working, I pride myself in knowing how to spell every term that comes my way. I look it up and LEARN IT as I go along.
When I was first an MT I was no hot shot speller. I am now and I can spot spelling errors in more places than work or a website.
I am surprised that you don't take any more pride or interest in your work than to say you don't need to be a great speller! I go so far as to look up procedures I don't know, anatomy I am not familiar with and disease processes that are new to me. I can't mindlessly transcribe in the vacuum I call my office, not worrying about whether or not I can spell the words correctly and with no clue about what I am doing! I make an effort, always.
Perhaps this is why I work part time and I mean PART TIME of 25 hrs a week and I made oh so well above the average MT income stated in a post below. You get out what you put in.

spelling errors
I have spelled so many words wrong and each time I do I fix it with autocorrect. I just figure that I spelled it wrong once, it will happen again. Some words I have spelled wrong so many different ways you would not believe, but each time they are corrected for me---saves lots of time.
spelling errors
My worst one is osteopenis instead of osteopenia. I put that right in my autocorrect.
