Storage
I had similar problem -- I went to Staples and bought an external hard drive with USB port and simply plugged into my computer - my computer just sees it as another drive. Cost about $60 to $80. I've been storing all my voice files on it. Safer than FTP and more convenient for me to look up.
storage
I know what you mean about them pestering you to locae missing files and the like. It seems to me like their storage problem should be their responsibility and not yours. Perhaps they need an office coordinator, someone more organized, who would keep track of these things. I wish you luck. Beyond moving on, unless they decide to become more organized, I don't see much hope for your end getting any better.
storage vs memory
I think you have a basic lack of understanding of the difference between these two. Storing information won't slow down your computer unless you are constantly accessing it & your disk is really fragmented, & even then the difference might not be noticeable. Speed has to do with memory & processor speed, & photos or files stored on your computer don't have anything to do with this. Otherwise why would hard drives be equipped to handle 250, 500, 1000 GB (or more) of information? Processor speeds and amount of RAM have not increased proportionately. It's the RAM & processor speed you should be thinking about, not how many photos or videos you have. Memory is easy to add. Go to crucial.com.

In theory, it would allow any physician at any facility to have immediate access to a patient's entire medical record. In practice, not so much, at least so far.

get in and out.  I do not use the lid.  It has nice, high sides, room to turn around and I usually try to keep 3 inches of liter in it.

I have 2 other 'regular' size cats who use the standard liter boxes just fine but my big guy only uses his big, roomy custom box.  I also replace it about every 5-6 months.  I wish you and your kitty all the best!

HIPAA and storage of files
I have a client that has requested I store all their audio files and documents on my FTP indefinitely. They send a lot of work and after only a month, my FTP is starting to act up. It was never intended to be used as permanent storage. Also, I was under the impression that as an IC transcriptionist, I cannot legally store these files for any longer than about a month or two. I routinely clean out my computer whenever I receive payment.

Am I right about this? I had a HIPAA compliance book which I cannot find for the life of me right now. I would also like to offer them some suggestions for secure online storage if anybody has any.

Thanks as always guys. :)
This is free SOFTWARE, not STORAGE.
There is a difference.
Machines

ALL my accounts still use tapes, believe it or not.  Went through your same problem buying on E-Bay and just kept sending them back.  There is no one out there that repairs these anymore either.  It could just be your foot pedal but I doubt it -- you can try cleaning the wheels with cotton swabs and alcohol that sometimes gets the "yuk" off.   I have a Pearlcorder bought on E-bay -- after the 4th one-- that works and has worked for 6 months now -- holding my breath but gave up on the Sony's as they never hold up.   I finally figured I pay for what I get and those that I had paid new and over $400 actually did last me 10 years which averaged out to $40 a year which is what you can pay for the refurbished ones that last a year so either way averages out to about the same  -- but with the new ones they work right away and you don't have to go through so many.  I would try again on E-Bay but for the Pearlcorder pay at least $120 to $150 and it is then usually in good shape.   But the reason for the "Beeeeeeee" is that it is sticking and not rewinding -- which you know -- so try cleaning it, might work for a little while.

Good luck.  Patti

E-Machines are the best
Had one for 6 years solid use, made me a lot of money. Went through a lightning strike and survived that. I have now retired her with honor to purchase a new E-machine. They are solid, performance excellent.
Fax machines - sm

I have a Sharp UX510 and have been somewhat happy with it up to now.

But I am experiencing a lot of paper jams and even though I followed the owner's manual to correct this, it still happens often - incoming faxes. Also, the prints I receive are not always that clear.

So my question is - anyone have a free-standing fax that you can recommend.

Thank you

Yep, it was me. Storage tubs are great for so many things!!!
Glad to hear another big boy is happy!
need online file storage location

We transfer our files back and forth via email and very frequently the clinic is "missing completed" files which we have sent them.  This is beginning to take up way too much time to look up and resend.

I need an online storage site where us transcriptionists (3) can send a copy of finished work and also the clinic receptionsist can also access to look for "missing files."  (Preferably free or low priced) Any ideas??  Thanks.  Free

noise machines
If I may jump in here, they are sometimes also clock radios with nature sounds, or you can buy just the "noises" alone.  Wal Mart sells them too and places line Linens N' Things.  I have one with a white noise button because I'm a light sleeper, and it works great.  Check the electronics dept.
And the only machines who "transcribe" are VR,

I just pulled mine back out of storage - LOVE THEM!! nm

if doctors would only treat MTs like machines !!

this kills me, from the MT news board, a neurologist speaking:

What are the pitfalls? “Mumbling,” says Dr. Block, “that’s the main problem. Doctors are used to dictating in a low, monotone mumble, as fast as they can. A person might be able to handle it by going back and listening to the recording again and again. But for voice recognition, doctors need to speak in a normal, conversational tone of voice, just like we are doing right now. Speak normally, and Dragon has no problem, it works very well. It’s really quite simple.”

yes PLEASE, go ahead and treat me like a machine -- and that TAT would be a whole lot better!!!! and yes doc, you would save money too.....

4000 LPD??? They think y'all are machines?..

You can see pix at transcriptiongear.com. Machines are not always interchangeable. You need to ask t

The 'suits' think we are just production machines!
Everything on their mind is how to get the 'lazy' MTs to produce more. They graph it,research 'better practices', hire new suits that saying the right things and doing the right things to play the game. Just once I would love to get one these air headed suits seated and listening to their docs and doing the job just for 4 hours and show these management robots what this job actually is. But, this will never happen and the suits will keep on playing their game as long as the stockholders are clueless - let the employees or ICs listen to a stockholder meeting once - it is hoot! The really intelligent stockholder will ask questions like how do your seasoned MTs feel about VR and getting paid less, etc. and changing their ways of doing things --- the suits have come up with all these fancy named programs that they have dreamed up to brainwash the stockholders into believing that the suits really have a handle on this company and are moving forward. I wish the stockholders would talk one and one with the employees and really get a feel for how the brain dead suits are really doing. Not one of the management of a transcription business should not be a non-MT. They haven't walked a mile in our boots and are only interested in fancy graphs, and fancy sounded 'best practices' crap to brainwash the stockholders - get down to the dirty job of doing the job, they you will know how to manage a company!! I have yet to meet a suit that knows what it would be like to be in our shoes but worse yet they DO NOT CARE how we feel!! Can you tell I have had it with suits?!!
I believe calling machines 'transcribers' is yet
(now AHDI, of course). Now there's a little gang of crooks I want NO part of.
EVER!
I use Gmail, which has a huge storage capacity and search function (sm)

Which is why I like it.  I don't have the emails stored on my computer, just on my Gmail.  Free and I haven't even scratched the surface of my storage space yet.  Of course the actual files are saved on my work computer.  I have a monster of a work computer, so storage would not be an issue.  I have two other computers for family use.  Nobody else in this house even BREATHES near my work computer. Ha ha!

Nothing is ever sent just in an email. I zip everything up using WinZip, with password, and then attach it... For HIPPA compliance.

I do send one email a day unless I am asked to do STAT work and get it back right away, in which case separate emails are used.

You can work those machines harder than a lot of people do

Well let's just say I'm sitting here without
work, which is a typical day for me. Does that help any?
re: sitting on leg
Please, try to break this habit.  I sat on my leg for years and years and my neurologist has told me he forbids his patients to sit on legs, cross anything but the ankles!  This because of all the peripheral vascular disease, sciatica and DVT's.
Pet sitting
I make good money at it and it is fun
Sitting
When I started transcribing, I had a lot of problems with sitting. I am a pretty fidgety person, so I can't usually work without at least a 5-minute stretch every hour, 2 hours at the absolute most. I did a lot of research into office ergonomics, & one of the most helpful things I found was this:

Q: What is the best sitting position?
A: The next one.

So I try to not stay locked in one position for a long time.

Also when I first started working, I started getting 4th & 5th digit numbness. This can be an ulnar nerve compression or a disk problem. I tried to look at how I was positioned at my desk, & what I discovered is this: The higher my monitor, the worse my neck pain was, because the more I would round my back & crunch my neck (chin jutting). There are a lot of places selling things that lift the monitor higher, & this is the exact opposite of what I needed. Also I need to have my knees lower than my hips in order to avoid the tendency to round my back.

The chin jutting/back rounding was pretty obvious, but I wasn't sure what was going on with my wrists. Anyway, I took the shotgun approach & immediately got a downview desk (monitor is under glass), a modified "kneeling chair," (I removed the knee rests but use it for the seat tilt), and a Kinesis keyboard. My chair does not have any back rest at all, & yet I am so well balanced that I am very comfortable without it. I had some wedge-shaped foam cut and occasionally I use this as a seat cushion. It helps maintain the hip tilt & gives my butt a rest.

After I made these changes, my numbness disappeared completely in a couple of weeks and has never come back, & I've been doing this work for around 6 years with the same setup.

Can't help you with the hair loss issue.

Hope this helps.

Sitting all day...
You can look forward to your backside expanding as well!  The more years that go by, the wider I get!
When it comes to sitting all day, sm
I have been at this 15 years. My backside is actually SMALLER then when I started. I have not become obese at this, quite the reverse. It is all in what you do when you are not sitting at your desk.

You actually DO need to get up and at least stretch, hourly anyway and you need to have an actual break every 3 hours, that being 15 minutes or so. You also need to break to eat lunch. No one expects you to sit for 8 hours straight, nor should you.

I remember being a new MT and the excitement of the work and what I was doing, and my pleasure in it and trying to do it right, etc. meant I didn't want to get up. I was trying to find that magical flow. I did, but I developed less than great working habits. You are new, learn to balance. Having a break can renew your spirits, your energy and reduce your stress.

Hair loss is probably not work related so have that checked out. Hypothyroidism, lupus, etc cause it.
Sitting
I have a bad back, if I go to school for medical transcription, is there any way to cope with prolonged sitting? WHat kind of chair do you use? What do you do?
Tired of sitting
I can stand to sit for just so long and then I have to get up and move around. Sitting and pounding a keyboard makes me more exhausted than if I was doing something physical. When I am doing something physical, I feel much better and am not as cranky.
As if we don't do it enough sitting at the computer! (sm)
If I do transcribe while I am dreaming I surely don't remember when I wake up. I'm usually passed out the second my head hits the pillow. Don't remember a thing when I wake up. Heaven Forbid!
Ha, sitting here waiting
for work!
New MT problems with sitting all day?
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this.  I am new to MT and not used to sitting at the computer all day or a big portion of it, and lately my neck has been hurting (more than usual) and also my hair seems to be coming out more?! My husband says it's stress from everything? Any suggestions, or is this normal starting out?
Sitting like this all day is so bad for us. Plus, tinnitus is no fun...(NM)

Sitting waiting right now....
I guess this gives us time to chat on MTStars.
Yep. I was falling asleep sitting up.
I went to the neurologist, and he put me on Provigil. Works pretty good. I'm also switching to an earlier work shift.
After years of sitting down and getting 1 job an hour....
I finally got out.  They don't care if 300 people type 50 jobs a day or 3000 people type 1 job a day.  Makes no difference to them.  Hey, if you don't make their minimum line count, they don't have to provide you with benefits, so it's a win-win if you don't get much work.  I can only hope that a company that cares that little about their employees will eventually implode upon itself.  It took me over a year of scouring the employment opportunities at the local hospitals before I finally got a job with a hospital.  For the first time in 17 years of doing MT, I feel like somebody.  I was also fortunate enough to get a job that has all their MTs at home telecommuting, so it's best of both worlds.  I know that isn't possible for everybody, but maybe if enough people "bail" on these nationals who HAVE all the hospital accounts, and they're left with inexperienced "typists" who will eventually mess up the work so bad that the hospitals get mad, maybe hospitals will go back to having their own department where at least they have some quality control over the finished product.  That's my hope for this profession.
She is sitting at home with her husband
I think it's foolish to ask such a question here.
Sitting here shaking my head
Can't believe how many people can't see through this obvious bunch of crap.
sitting here working, oblivious
when a friend called and asked if i had the tv on. She said 'turn it on'. And stayed glued to the tube for a long time, switching emotions....
Again I am sitting here twiddling my thumbs
and waiting for some work. I started with this company about six months ago and was told I would do a number of reports per day. Well that has not happened. Most of the day I spend waiting for work, and I am not making any money while sitting here. I notified the company about a week ago that I need more work and they are supposedly looking into it, so my question is how long should I wait? Has anyone else had this problem, and how did you handle it? Thanks in advance.
I do pet-sitting and have bred yorkies.

Sitting here waiting for work
I hate it when this happens.  Sitting here waiting for a job to get into the pool.  This is so stupid.
I am also sitting here with no work again from Amherst. I dont believe this.
