I had to have a bowel resection for a Meckels diverticulum and the surgeon charged 2500 and got 1500

and the hospital bill was 27,000. Until that surgeon gets done paying malpractice, his office costs, taxes, etc. I bet he doesnt get one third of that money plus all the visits I had while in the hospital for 9 days and fu visits. I did have insurance thank God.

I don't have a typical day, one day I can do 2500

lines in about 12 hours and another day I'm lucky to get 1000 in 8 hours.   I have an expander, have a few templates but don't get those dictators on a regular basis.  I do NOT have to enter any demographic information or look up addresses, etc.   I  work in batches, don't have to save each report separately.  I have enough experience that I rarely have to work up anything, but also will spend 30 minutes searching for something rather than leave a blank.

I get up frequently.  I try to apply myself for at least a good hour or more and then take a short break.  My feet swell really bad and I'm getting butt spread so I try to get up and move around.  I never thought I was a particularly fast typist, but did the time clock thing and found that I was averaging 270+ lines/hour.  Some days I work 6 hours/day, some days 8 to 10.  I may have a superduper day where I make 3000 lines/day, but the next day I only do 1000, because I just can't routinely do 3000 lines/day and have a life.

The thing that has helped me most is limiting my time on-line and having my e-mail so that I can't see/hear when a new one comes up so I don't stop typing and check e-mail.

I routinely do 85+% ESL, but maybe once a month get a day where I have lots of normals and that spoils you.

2500 lines ???
2500 lines in 5 or 6 hours - I've never heard of anyone doing that in my 25 years of transcribing!
2500/wk PT or 5000/wk FT
basically breaks down to 500 day PT, 1000 day FT.
2500/wk PT, 5000/wk FT
that's all my company requires. Plus we get tiered incentives for anything over 1000 per day.
Probably bowel habits :) (nm)
.
2500 a day??? And your work is perfect?
Talk about bragging about what must be crappy work. Quality must really suck, or you work, what, 18 hours a day? LOL
I get 2500-3500 with a 10 hour day!
Don't assume it is not possible. I work for a small MTSO with a very good account. Don't assume that we all work for a national with a lot of crap work and crap ESLs.
2500 per day, 7 days a week. nm

Bowel or bladder Smith

Super Bowel Weekend? LOL

2500-3000 lines daily. sm
I found my comfort zone and awesome account, finally. After 25 years in the MT business, I can honestly say, I am happy doing my job! I have an awesome account, wonderful people to work for, and an excellent line rate.

I have not set hours, no special quota to meet - just get the reports done with utmost quality, keep them in turnaround time and keep the docs happy!

Sometimes, I don't even check my line count. I just work until my account is caught up.

There are accounts/doctors/hospitals out there who will appreciate you, your knowledge and work ethic, who will treat you with the respect you so deserve!

I happened to find one - all MTs can do the same; it just takes a little effort. Believe me, I have been around the block in this profession, working for smaller MTSOs, large nationals, and having my own accounts. It was not easy, but I finally have found "paradise" in the MT profession!

lots of my docs say bowel habitus --
nm
You know how use old timers fixate on our bowel function. nt

Sounds like irritable bowel syndrome ...sm
if you go to webmd.com you can read up on it as well as some things to do to help alleviate symptoms.
I don't think I would like the 'small bowel of cereal' - thanks for the laugh.
.
A possibility would be ischemic bowel disease.

1500 lpd, 8 cpl over that nm
xx
I did ($1500)
nm
I use APC XS 1500
Gives me around 45 minutes of time. It has been very reliable!
How do you get 1500 lpd even in...
radiology?  I've been tested at 70 wpm with 100% accuracy, use Instant Text, have 20 years experience and good dictators but still can't get 1500 lines per day! Maybe it's because the platform is Meditech and I find it cumbersome.  If there is some secret to getting the lines won't somebody please share it!
$2500-2600 not counting entertainment, doc/dentist

That's just rent, phone, electric, car, car ins., gas, and food.

Depends -- usually 2500-3000 lines per week - sm
though where I work does not have a minimum, but they are considering changing that shortly. Still won't be a firm # as they go by minutes, but the min. will be 60 minutes a day which will be approx 500-600 lines a day.
1700 during the week, 2500-3000 on weekends
:-)
It probably would stink, mixed in a bowel! Cute blooper, though. nm
nn
How long does it take you to get 1500? nm

I don't think 1500 is unreasonable...
There are a lot of variables. If you're willing to work as many hours as necessary to attain 1500 lines per day, then that's feasible within a reasonable amount of time. And once used to the account, of course, you'll do that in fewer and fewer hours.

As far as cpl, I haven't seen many ads for companies willing to pay even 8.5, and that's rare. More likely it would be around 7 to 8.

If you want to get your own accounts, depending on your area, you could probably ask for 9.5 to 10 per line and get it.

Also, you may have to work for a few companies to find the right one.

1500 lines
I think 1500 lines a day is realistic as long as the work is there. So it's kind of a mixed message I guess.
I've been on Escription for four years and I have rarely hit 2500 lines a day..
Yes, when I have good reports I can do 500 lines an hour, but unfortunately, that does not happen consistently in my day. I can cruise along for a few hours and then hit some ESLs, which just mentally slows me down and then I struggle the rest of the day. If, I was able to sit there 8 hours straight NO interruptions or breaks and easy reports, then I could hit 2500 lines but that is not my reality. Some of the reports are good but I'm telling you.. A LOT of them have to retyped, thus slowing your line count down an hour..and you've just basically done straight typing for a mere 4 cpl.  I truly think that editing needs to pay more. I am like you.. I am requiring at least $100 a day.. sometimes I can do it in 6 hours (no breaks and good reports) and sometimes for various reason I have to sit there 12-15 hours (interupptions, ESL, and just bad reports)..So add that up..$100 in 12-15, that's like $8 an hour.. Wal-mart here I come LOL
yesterday I had a 1500 second report....nm

1500 to 2000 lines if doing
medical.  If on radiology, 2000 to 3000 plus.  I have done as much as 4000 on  radiology but that depends on which radiologists I get.  We have 5. And no, I don't use a lot of macros, and we have 2 ESL radiologists and probably 90% of our medical dictators are ESL or otherwise horrible dictators.
I just had a surgeon ask...
his PA if there was such a breast size as F, get an affirmative, and then say, "so she's a double FF?  She has the largest breasts I've ever seen". It made me laugh out loud, I don't know why, maybe it was his tone of disbelief or that fact that he's been around a long time and has surely seen many boobs in his day...thought I'd pass it along.
One surgeon I know always says...

when a patient is ready to be discharged, he always says "____ is peeing and pooping normally."  Slays me every time!  I just find myself giggling like a little kid whenever I hear it!  Peeing and pooping are such a great words...embrace them!

Isn't there a book out there called "Everybody poops?"

$14.97 is what I was charged
They did not have these on the shelf (I wonder why). I had to ask for the model number. See my post above and they had to go get them in the back. You could call your local Radio Shack (what I did). They looked in the computer and saw them in inventory (they had only 3). I would ask them to pull a pair for you and hold them at the front register with your name on them until you can get there. Hope this helps. Happy holidays.
I have not seen a surgeon yet.

I want to get my finances ready before I schedule the surgery.  My previous experience with surgeons and disability is "go back whenever you feel ready"...they don't seem to want to comit to a timeline.  The last time I had surgery I went back way too soon and had complications, so would like to avoid that this time around.

Thanks to everyone who has replied, this is all good advice and info.  I think I will plan for the worst at 6 weeks or so and hope for best at just a week or two.  It certaily won't hurt to have some extra money saved.

One surgeon
I transcribe for has many times told them to pipe down in the background. I am not sure if it is because he cannot think with the noise or if he is doing it for my benefit, but either way, I appreciate it.

On the other hand, I had an Indian doctor the other day who sang/chanted his entire report. If you have ever been to a Catholic mass and have heard the priest do that singsong kind of thing, well that is how he dictated his entire report. Every now and then he would hold the note a little longer. It was the weirdest thing.
I think you should have charged them

the first time.  Tell them if you have to spend time to listen, then that's at a rate of $20.00 an hour in addition to the transcribed lines minus the reports they think are already transcribed.  This way, you are paid to listen.

How much more of this are you going to take Lisa?  My dear, you are letting them walk on you.

Are you being paid for the "meeting" in the morning?

I can thank C-Bay for losing my job, too.

Look, you are going to need to draft a contract to bring along in the morning.  Otherwise, you will be working for free, and this practice will drive you insane.

You need to figure out what works best for you and set the ground rules.  You simply explain to the office manager that this is how you will be doing the work and what you will charge, etc.

At some point, you will have to hold this office accountable for the work they give you and stop working for free.

If you are picking up flash drives, then they should not expect you to report back on patients, etc., which is time consuming unless they would agree to a flat hourly rate for listening and sorting out dictations and then a lower line rate.

I know, I have a big mouth, but please, don't let them take advantage of you.  As I said in your last posting, they will continue to abuse you if you allow it.

There are plenty of companies online hiring right now.  www.mtjobs.com - have you checked there?

Well, I just transcribed 1500 lines in 3 hours. sm

I work on the same account every day, same dictators, lots of templated reports I did myself and put them into auto correct.  I get up early, start at 7 am and today I was done by 10 am.  Cleaning the house now.  Also, the line pay is slightly higher than most, so 1500 lines is fine for me today.

On harder days when the account is really behind,  I get up and vacuum the house after 3 hours of transcribing then come back for 1 hour.  If things are caught up, I stop for the day.  If not, I will go back in the evening.

I can't sit for 6-8 hours straight.  Making $160 bucks in 3 hours is good for me and enough.   Tomorrow is another day!

Use templates and short cuts - that will help!  I have whole reports in my auto correct, but you have to listen through and change and correct things as each patient is a different case.

I do have to tell you, I do not get this many lines every day in such short a time.  It just happened that today was a good day.

Hope this helps.

Cuba is offering 1500 doctors to help us...

This was posted with a picture in the hurricane slideshow.

Hundreds of Cuban doctors listen to a speech by Cuban President Fidel Castro in Havana, September 4, 2005. The U.S. gave longtime foe Cuba the cold shoulder on Tuesday over its offer to send more than 1,500 doctors to help victims of Hurricane Katrina, which created a humanitarian disaster after pummeling the U.S.Golf Coast. What a disgrace.  During times like these, people should be able to set aside their grudges and problems and come together.

I was hired with a 1500 sign on bonus...
and the stipulations were that I got the first $500 after 30 days off of QA and meeting minimal line count, another $500 after 60 days of meeting minimal line count, and the final $500 at 1 year.  Of course if a pay period is missed not meeting minimum, there is no more sign on bonus.  Hope this helps.
If gross lines average is 1500 nm
nn
I won't quit until I have 1300-1500 lines a day.
slow days take longer
I type no less than 1500 lines in 7 hours

On my slowest day, I will not allow myself to get less than 200 lines an hour.  Depending on the worktype, I can type up to 400 lines an hour.  It is hard for me to consistently stay at that speed as I have orthopedic issues!!!  I also can type extremely fast, (120 wpm).  I also use a lot of Expanders and shortcuts.

1500 lines per day? Is this a realistic line
count to be able to make daily in the current MT climate? I have been in MT field for 30 years, with last 10 as QA.  I hate it, and can't wait to transcribe again. I am still really fast, never lost my skills thankfully, and can easily hit 1500 lines per 8 hour shift IF the work is there, though.  That is the target I would have to hit to even come close to what I am making currently as QA - things are tight on this salary, and can't get much tighter!  Do you think most companies have this sort of workload to offer MTs?  I used to work for 2 companies 15 years or so ago. Maybe do you think it would be more realistic for me to try to work for 2, or is 1500 lines steadily daily not a big deal?  I'm just so used to getting paid hourly, and never having that gut-wrenching fear of running out of work.  I don't need benefits at all, so IC is a big possibility.  I hope you understand, and I really appreciate your thoughts.   I'm so scared, but have to get out of my current situation at "you-know-where" before I lose my "you-know-what"...   Figured I'd peddle myself off as an MT rather than QA - worry about that down the road at a good company.
oral surgeon...

I had a similar situation a few years ago.  I paid and the ins. co. paid, dentist kept both payments.  After 3 phone calls to the office, no money.  So, I wrote a letter to the dentist, put PERSONAL AND CONFIDENTIAL on the envelope, put a cc to the state dept of insurance at the bottom of the letter (dept of ins. scares them more than the AMA (if dealing with MDs) or American Dental Association).

Got my money 2 days later.

checking out a surgeon?
is there a way to check out a surgeon or doctor before making an apt with them?  (complaints, track record or anthing else).  I've never been comfortable with the "referral" from your primary or whoever it might be because I can't shake the idea of friends referring to friends and not based on qualifications.  thanks
need a plastic surgeon
Does anyone have any personal experience with Dr. Michael Petrosky with Plastic Surgery Center of the South in Marietta, Georgia?  I am considering using him as I consulted with him and I really liked his manner and explanation of the surgery.  I would like to talk with someone who has used him before just to see if he is a good doctor, but how can one go about doing that with the HIPPA laws?  The only way I know to find out about patients of his is to ask their office and of course they aren't going to give me names/phone numbers.  If anyone has any info on this doctor's practice would you mind sharing with me please?  Or if you know of a way that I can talk to a few people who have used him, etc.  Thanks very much.
AND CHARGED ME AND KEPT MY MONEY
when I asked for return. Thanks you for the post above. I think the people on here are mostly English speaking, are they not? Maybe some speaking broken-English. They are not seeming to understand. I do not think most would like to be stolen from. I would put this in several languages as I am thinking the posts coming in are maybe not comprehending what we are saying but I only speak English.
