contract was up.  Download speed is not dependable - it can be fast or as slow as dial-up.  Uploads are usually faster as they are usually are text files, which are much smaller than a voice file.   If you have trees that may have branches that will blow in front of the dish during windy weather you may lose service.  If it is raining hard of snowing hard you can and probably will lose service.   I had service with DirecWay and their customer service stinks.

Can you get cable internet?

Hated my first year
I really hated my first year of MT. I worked in an office, which was really great experience to be surrounded by other MTs who helped me learn, but I was always frustrated, my back and shoulders hurt getting used to sitting in place all day, and I wondered if I was ever going to be able to get up to a good speed and not have to look up 20 things in every report. After about a year I finally started getting in the groove of things and for the next few years tolerated it and then finally started enjoying it.
I was on ERs for about a year at a company, who later changed management, and
then I lost everything, got bumped from ERs, got thrown into multiple accounts. I went from 200-300 lines/hour, to not even able to make 1000 lines/day.

I left that company, and now have the same situation. The lines are better, though, I am back up to where I want to be, but as soon as I start getting good lines for the first week of two-week period, my primary goes dry and I lose lines in the second week. I CAN NOT win.

Right now I am a little upset because I am working on 6 accounts, and truthfully am starting to confuse them.

It burns me, too, because I am trying to hard, yet my quality is suffering.

Then I get notes like 'read the specs' - like, yeah I did, but for the wrong account.

Anyone else get upset with that? I jump between 6 different accounts all day long. This cannot be good for the company, either, because you have to make mistakes.

I had to vent a little bit.
I hated it also and am now doing MT again.
At least we can say we tried it and didn't like it. I love transcribing and will never do QA again! This, after transcribing for 25 years and QA for 5. Can't believe it took me 5 years to realize how much I hated it. I was miserable and am very happy now, again!

I can relate!
I have tried one and hated it sm
I finally gave up and went back to the regular flat one. HOWEVER, when I did, I found I was holding my hands differently than I had previously. I went to an ergo to help hand and wrist pain, but it really didn't do much. Adjusting how I hold my wrists, paying attention to other issues of ergonomics and retraining myself is what really helped enormously.

Been in the 3 worst professions for carpal tunnel and these are the only types of jobs I have held in my adult life. Carpal tunnel? Not me! The first local AAMT meeting I ever attended addressed issues related to hand position, chair height and other work station problems. That is probably why I am still comfortable working all these years later.
I hated it...
We used EditScript and I hated the platform so much that when I found out we were going back to it, I quit. That is the first time I've ever had a problem with a platform. I didn't mind the actual VR work or the typing...I just felt that there were too many things that had to checked, double checked, triple checked (location codes, WT codes, demographic settings, etc) and yet I wasn't getting paid to do any of that. Not to mention the spellcheck was a total waste of time.

Kind of off topic but the company I worked for paid 3.5 for VR and 7 for straight, but I was QA so it was easy for me to accumulate tons of lines daily...but I definitely wouldn't want to work like that as an MT.
Favorite most hated dictators......
His reports are 15-20 minutes long.......and about 7 pages of dictation and about and hour of whistling to fill the caps when he is looking for information in the chart. To top it off.......he dictates in a monotone. My eardrums are killing me!
I did and hated every minute of it. I am now back to
SE and so much happier. I couldn't handle the sitting for eight scheduled hours every day. I like the flexibility of getting my required lines for the day and then typing more whenever I can. Fortunately, I didn't need the insurance benefits (my husband carries insurance) and I went back to SE after seven months of full time. I am sure there are people who love full-time, just not me. Whatever you decide, I wish you the best. Have a great day!
3-1/2 weeks...though knew from day 1 I hated it.

we are hated all over the world today....

I'm with you, Peg. I hated EMDAT. I will never touch
Demographics weren't filled in and had to look up every doctor name/address, and sorry, but the spellcheck was horrid. Even with the "setup" the company gave me that was supposed to correct it, it was the worst I've ever seen. Please, Rosey, do not make such broad statements and expect everyone to love something merely because you do. A lot depends on how the company maintains their platform. Have you ever worked on any other platforms? EMDAT is one of the most cumbersome programs out there so I doubt you've had much experience with more sophisticated platforms.
She said she hated the laptop but was hesitant to get another. That is why I said wait.

DSG offered me 10 to start. BUT they are on DQS and I hated that, so left after sm
a few months! Good luck! Yes, you do deserve it.
Friend was there, hated it, payement & system issues, etc. I'd say No. nm

My kids hated organized sports and groups. They

are both social, happy kids, but enjoy spending their spare time with Lego's, pets and especially reading. My 5th grader reads at an 11th grade reading level and my freshman reads well beyond college level. Both enjoy school very much and are on the Challenge tracks, A's and B's. But I think they have learned how to entertain themselves and enjoy a slower pace because we don't have a T.V. Definitely gears down the speed of life.

This actually looks do-able. I haven't dieted since a teen. Hated obsessing about food.

I hated it - but if you do go ahead with it, I have the proprietary foot pedal you'll need that I

Hated it. The office politics, the dressing up, the back-stabbing. I do in 4 hours what I did in 8
at home.  That hospital environment with all those women backstabbing, worrying about how long other people took for breaks or lunch, who was in favor with the supervisor, who fit in with the cliques,  UGGGGGGHHHHH!   I can't believe I am saying this but MQ looks good compared to those days now that you got me to thinking.  (Not that good pay-wise/benefit-wise though)
Mine are in year-round thank goodness! They've started their new year 2 months ago.

Union diesil mechanic - good pay, great benefits. We swap year to year on who brings home more sm
money.....but I am an IC and he has all the benefits...health insurance/dental that the company pays for, pension plan, 401k, etc.  Factor all of that in and he makes way more than I do.
to cowgirl - Last I knew, last year the job paid $25,000/year no taxes, etc.
The hospital was bombed about a year ago, but not a lot of damage, very minimal damage.
44-year-old WF, M, Texas, 3 grown kids, just had 26 year wedding anv.

Not only did I finally receive the proper training, but the woman on the advisory board hired and mentored me. I also joined the local AAMT and networked. Good luck. I know how frustrating it can be. A community college will have a good program to include medical language, MT courses taught by local MTSOs, business English, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, etc.
Has this changed?
Congrats!
Will all MTs be changed over to ASR?
x
no, nothing has changed.
Just a very bossy lady who waits until the last minute to give me the work, sometimes three to five days later than it came in, and then demands it ASAP. It isn't my fault she cannot keep up with the work.
Fed law changed that
We got a notice last year that the feds required they get 911 in place in all areas by the end of the year.  When we first got it, we had no 911 service.  We had to use the 911 service twice due to my son being so ill and it worked fine, however afterwards we had to reboot the modem and wait for half an hour to get the phone back.  I think having a regular line just for local calls is advisable and using Vonage for long distance only or work is the safest way to go.
Has changed now though

My husband  - now ex - has been in trucking for over 25 years and all of our friends have and are and were.  It has changed a lot and also depends on whether you own your own or drive for someone else.  Kind of like IC versus employee.  Also a lot have also been outsourced as there are a lot of foreigners driving the trucks now a days.   There is such a similarity between the two (MT and trucking) but this started with trucking sooner.   Just like MT you do not make money unless you are moving and when that truck has to pay two salaries it is hard.  But like you said, your dad raised four kids but in this day and age it would be hard to do.   If you are cross country it is so hard watching expenses, etc.  Again just like MT it was a good career and if you have been in it for years it is still decent pay but to start out in it, would not do that.  Just like MT as I have very good accounts, make very good money but when someone talks to me about starting out in it, I do shudder a little as I read such horror stories on this board and I know it is not as easy to do as it was when I started 20+ years ago.  I do still yearn for the open road sometimes though.  It is a way to see the US.   Drove through 42 of the 48 states here and Canada.  Anyway that is my thoughts for what they are worth.

changed
Yes there have been changes but not all companies abide by them either. Some stuff comes up to be all subjective though and some companies QA team is quite picky. Obviously your own accounts still like what you do so I wouldn't worry about it.
Maybe you changed the
spellcheck setting so that capitalized words would be spellchecked, which is a very smart thing to do.

I don't know how to make the change the poster below mentioned, but I'd rather have it spellcheck names than not spellcheck capitalized words, especially since I have to cap allergies.

I just changed ..
I did start at 4 a.m. but was finding it very difficult to get up consistently. Now I start at 5, and it's much easier. Due to kid's activitise it is often 10:30-11:00 pm before I get to bed, and I just personally could not do it.

so, you would have to make going to bed early a priority ..

Good luck to you!
I would think that if ANYTHING is changed
such as that, the MT would have to be notified. If you have a signed contract stating a line is XXX, then would they not be in violation for not disclosing the fact that the contract is now in violation?
I just changed my IT

Thanks for the tips.  I just recompiled my Instant Text glossaries and then went into the Importer and created abcz glossaries.  I hope this helps.  I really need to be making 300 to 500 lph because my huby was just laid off and no one is hiring.

Thanks again!!!!

I think he makes $700,000.00 a year, and if they ask him to walk before his first year MQ has...sm

to pay him a cool 1 million dollars.  You can check this out at the Medquist website.   I think the CFO makes $350,000 a year, and the head of IT makes $250.000 a year.

P.S.  This does not include the perks, like expense account, car allowance, sign-on bonus, etc.

Our 16 year old son has been working for a year now to pay for his truck.
He's learning how to sand and do body work and how the engine and transmission go together. My parents didn't buy cars for my siblings and I either. I had a 20+ year old beater car until I could afford to move up to a a newer one.

I see all the nice new cars parked in the high school parking lot every day. It's nice that so many disrespectful punk kids get handed something nicer to drive than what all the teachers drive. Oh, well. Honestly, I think most of them borrow Mommy or Daddy's car or are the child of a doctor who can afford to hand them everything.

Hopefully, my kids will take better care of their cars because they bought and built them on their own. You're not going to grow up to be responsible if you don't work hard for something and expect Mommy and Daddy to bail you out all the time.

Oh, my Dad lectured us on even allowing our child to have a vehicle because Dad didn't have one until after he had worked his way through college, lettered on the football team, got straight As, lettered on the baseball team, yadda yadda. He either walked or hitched a ride. Yeah, well, times were different back then, Daddy-O. LOL At least my kid has the opportunity to work and earn his own car.
IC - 30 hours week, $98K last year. So far this year - 28K. sm
Individual IC - own account(s).
Not me, owed last year, and expect to owe this year- sm
or break even, had more expenses this year. Only owed $200 but still don't want to owe at all. Need to start doing estimated tax payments again so I don't owe! Guess I will get off my butt and do that this year.
I think you are right. I think they may have changed back to what it should have been all along.

Things have not changed
at Transhealth and one just needs to check back on past postings a week ago and you will read the bad experiences people have had with TH. Good luck if you go with them as you are going to need it!
I changed ATT LD to SBC business sm
line. Will see how long it lasts. Took me FOREVER to get to a LIVE American person who could do this for me!
BOS is changed so you have to keep buying the new one--$$$$

My margins are changed!

Just went into my acct for a clinic in which I am an IC being paid 12 cpl in MS Word.  I have not worked for a week.  Today, I notice the margins are changed.  Does this change what constitutes a line (isn't it 65 characters per line)???  I go into their system and type on their MS Word via HSI.

I am dumbfounded.

The needs of the client have changed.
They can say they need the work whenever the fancy strikes them. You can either provide it or not. That is just the way this business works.
Not unless something has changed recently...
I have worked at a job where I had to use both the Lanier and a Dictaphone.  They are two very separate things.
I don't think so...they have changed the protocol--sm
for numbers, in particular, at least three times in the last five years. I know, because it gets annoying to have to change the way I do things everytime they want to sell another book for $80 a pop. They started out with numbers 1 through 10 being spelled out and using numbers above 10. Then it was numbers instead of roman numerals, and then it was back to using all numbers and not spelling them out....shheeesh make up your minds! and that is all within the last five 5 years. I swear they do it just to sell more books and not because any of it is right or wrong, or *standard*, because it isn't. JMO
If it grossed you out, you should have changed
Not prude, eh? Involved a cat? This could mean only a few things (mating, eliminating, shedding).

Why possibly cost someone their job because you are so delicate?

You were fortunate to have been talking to someone friendly enough to go beyond the acquisition of information.

What is up with the American workforce? Are we all now just a bunch of whiny crybabies and tattletales.

I wouldn't want you to work on my team.
Very little hasn't changed...sm

since the beginning of time. It's not just the 'religious fanatics' who have changed. The human race has evolved in their beliefs since Adam and Eve. Christians don't follow the rules of the Old Testament per se, because Jesus fulfilled the laws. There aren't too many religions who still make animal sacrifices. A woman who is having her period is no longer considered unclean. Pork is not considered taboo in the Christian faith, and Catholics aren't limited to eating only fish on Fridays. There were religions who believed in human sacrifice, but I doubt that goes on very much any more.

People have evolved in that we no longer believe the world is flat. We don't believe you are going to get AIDS by touching someone who has it. We no longer believe that a woman who is having her period can't go swimming.

Who believes the same things they believed when they were six? How different are your beliefs than your parents? Not just about religion, but about anything.

I'm a lover of WP 6.1 but changed
over to Word 2003 about a year and a half ago. I still have all my disks for WP 5.1 and 6.1 but hate to let them go! If you haven't found what you need, you might give this site a try. I was in communication with this lady a couple of years ago but she couldn't ship to California.

ExText...something changed
Question to all ExText users out there...I have been using ExText for over a year now, and right after January 1, I can no longer do control x to copy and move text any more.  I have to copy the text, paste it to the place I want it, then go back and delete the text I copied.  Is anyone else experiencing this problem.  I did e-mail company but they, of course, did not answer me.  I hate this, it is too time-consuming, just another step added to take away from production.
The rules changed?

I would have used a comma in that situation.  But, I had no idea that the rules of English grammar had formally changed.  This is a revelation; most of my grammar education happened before 1972.
