I spent several hundred dollars trying to clean up voice files, both with an expensive external sound card system and very expensive computer speakers with a pod for a headset. I finally ditched the system and purchased a call-in system accessed by a C-phone. Be weery of those sound files. The clear ones do go overseas while us Americans get the worst of the batch.

Don't do it! I wasted my money when I joined, and
I will NOT be renewing. They support offshoring. They're trying to get an RMT exam up and running now, hoping that it will become essential to employment (right now it's elective). They support an apprenticeship program on which they helped get the ball rolling with AHIMA. This program hasn't come out yet but will if they can iron out the wrinkles. This program calls for TWO YEARS of apprenticeship making practically minimum wage to start and not ending much higher than that. It will only accept graduates from AAMT-approved schools, and it's going to drive the MT pay rate down even further! As if we need that!

Sound files
I thought it was just me but my group sometimes uses hand held recorders and you are so right--it may be a simple word but it just doesn't always come through clear and I feel like a fool leaving a blank when I've done this job for 30+ years. The comment about a tin can is SO appropriate! I use Express Scribe and MOST of the time the dictation is fairly clear--although (guess I'm old fashioned) you can't beat the clarity of a Dictaphone tape player. It is always clear as a bell and I really HATE to sell mine; however, no one seems to use the tapes much anymore. Such is progress--even if it isn't really better at all!
Sound files wanted
Does anyone have any sound files they could share, good and bad quality, that I could let someone listen to so they can see what they're getting into if they decide to do MT? I'd let her listen to mine, but we save nothing; as soon as the job is typed, the sound file is gone. Any websites that have practice type files? Thanks for any suggestions.
Question about digital sound files
Hi everyone,
I am totally new to medical transcription and have a question. In doing transcription digitally, what are the most common sound file formats? I am about to take a test (both written & verbal) for a company and they sent me my test files as .wav files. The files are hard to understand at best (the guy sounds like he's talking into a tin can ) and I am wondering why they didn't send them to me in a clearer form such as MP3. I am about to ask this same question to the person sending me the test but I thought I'd ask it here too. Is the .wav format the most common form of sound file for MT's? And if so, what's the best program to listen to these files in? I have Windows Media player, Real Player and WinAmp on my computer. Are there programs that MT's use to better hear these files? I hate to sound like a total dummy here but I'm new to this and when I went to school several years ago for MT, we only did tapes--not digital! If anyone can give me some info here, I'd really appreciate it!

This software works as a transcriber that downloads into your computer and allows you to receive files and use your footpedal. I have used it a lot when applying for jobs and testing, especially because I can then use my footpedal and not my keyboard to advance the sound files. This is a free download too, so use it if you have to. I highly recommend it.....

That DOES sound strange, I'd call back
and try to find out what was going on if it was me. I try to remember whenever I have to call an entity like that to make a note of who I am talking to so if I have to call back I have it available.
DOS is a pre-Windows operating sytem, it isn't
a platform. I currently use WP5.1, which is DOS based. It is difficult to find compatible software sometimes. Stedman's Spellcheck is no longer available for DOS. There are some Expanders that are not compatible with DOS.

if you can stop pay or trace the money order. It supposedly can be done now. Then send her a certified letter demanding the equipment or a refund, or you'll sue in small claims court.

Just because you wasted your
time & money for an organization that has screwed over American MTs doesn't mean others should too. The OP needs to know the truth. For your, what, half a cent or so raise, you get to pay dues, take nonstop extended credit courses, etc.... Been there, done that. Not worth it. And now that they push VR and offshoring, they'll NEVER get another dime from me!!!

I have wasted so much time trying to
figure the SH program out before it dawned on me to come on and ask. Wish I had done it a lot sooner. All of you have saved me so much time and I certainly appreciate all the feedback.

I need to be left in one hospital that I can learn. That means I need to know the surrounding doctors, doctors in other hospitals, streets, area SNFs, all that comes with the territory.

That's what happens when you have people in charge of MTs who HAVE NEVER TRANSCRIBED!
They think we can just sit down.........turn on the "machine" and just spit out transcription because we know medical terminology. WELL SORRY - IT DOESN'T HAPPEN THAT WAY.
Yet they want HUGE LINE COUNTS.
They aren't going to get good TATs or HUGE line counts flipping me from one hospital to another at THEIR LEISURE.
Somewhere along the line they have me CONFUSED WITH A MACHINE

Converting voice files to digital files
I have a Voice Solutions dictation system that will happily convert DS4000 voice files to digital when they are downloaded (wave files). However, it will not recognize any other files for conversion. I had a physician download .WAM files from his DS-30 and my dictation system would not convert it. Anyone have any suggestions? I would greatly appreciate any input.

Did you save files in .rtf format? The files need to be
as a Word document or it won't count them. Could be the problem.
got the "phone call" -- get this, MQ has hired a bunch of telemarketers to call all of us to
we received our "incentive packet." They don't even have the wherewithall to contact us personally. These are temp-agency hired telemarketers sitting around a boiler room making sure we're reading our mail.... told him it don't pertain to me because I've been demoted from FT to SE.... He said, "yes, the letter is vague, but it does pertain to FT as well as SE...." yeah right, we'll see.

RUN, do not walk away! I do an entirely different side business now that I really love (in addition to my MTing, which I also love!) Find something you're good at and that you truly love doing. Then make a business out of it. That's the best way to have a side business. Selling discount toilet paper through Amway/Quixtar? Not so much.
The CMT exam is overrated. Don't waste your time & money. Use that money on
paid anymore just because you have it. There are a few CMT cheerleaders that post to people like you but they are pretty well sucked up into that association.

If you can get through the test files, then the sound quality on the actual company files is better. And, the dictation is never as bad as the test files, plus you have QA to help with hard blanks.

Has anyone disconnected the internal sound card and replace with another sound card?
I am having problems with my sound on one of my computers. Several different ExText program have been on it so I don't think it is the program and the sound is just now as clear as on my other computer. Has anyone switched (disconnected the internal sound care and replaced) to a new sound card? Did it make a difference.

if you do bring it to the attn of the office manager, why not offer her a raise to compensate. it is obvious she just needs or wants more money than your office is paying her. I agree, it is a free country and although it seems odd, unless you had it outlined in contract, she can work for whomever or whereever she pleases on the side. at least she is typing and not at a strip joint, lol. I see no conflict of interest, she has experience obviously in whichever field you are in and what is wrong with doing extra in that field. i agree with MYOB "nicely" and concentrate on your reports than looking at older reports and seeing who they are typed by.

If they don't call you within 15 minutes, you should call them. There
is no excuse for leaving you sitting by a phone all day. At the very least, an e-mail explaining why the delay. If this is the way they train, how do they pay. Do you really want to work for a company who thinks so little of your time?

wav files
I receive my wav files via an FTP site and return the completed files the same way. I have a digital voice file player program on my computer, with a foot pedal, and play them that way. I type in Word, save the file, and send them back via the FTP site again. I like it alot, but the program costs $200 including the foot pedal. some have demo versions, like express scribe, I think, but I have heard alot of complaints about foot pedals not being compatible with it. email if you have additional questions.
