I find it totally disgusting that benefits are tied in to production.

You and me both. MQ is totally sick. They had better find another type of business to get into
because they have failed miserably with this.
Funny how people are different. I find islands/beaches to be totally boring.

That was with full benefits, which are the same benefits as an in-office employee for the QA staff..
However, I hear that their current QA staff are being asked to reach numbers that are out of sight and goals are basically impossible.
What is there to be tongue tied about?
I told you what I have a problem with.
tied to my chair
Has anyone ever heard of a type of treadmill that fits under the desk that you can use?  I don't need to use my footpedal much and need to burn SOMETHING while I work....someone mentioned that they heard of this at a Weight Watcher's meeting..thanks~
I used to be tied to it when I first started at home. sm

When I first started at home I was like, "this is way tooooooo cool." I can get back to some jobs later.  Then later became later or I was up with the sun, etc.

It took me some time (over a year) but I've figured out what works for me. I usually start at 7:00 a.m. and finish by 2:30 p.m. when the bus arrives from school. If I get lazy and read the paper in the morning, I work 8:00 to 3:30 or whatever. Tonight I have had the occasional evening shift because my daughter needed help on her project for school

Other than that, I usually leave my computer unless I go on in the evening to check my email before I go to bed.

I realized my computer doesn't yell at me loud enough to pound on the keyboard for another hour to make an extra $15 or $20.  Now if I were getting double time, this computer would be on all night. Like that's ever going to happen.

You can't leave out the part where you are TIED DOWN to the work and can't take off.

VERY hard to get - a few companies have rad tied up pretty tight. The hospital I work for sm
will not even look at a new company for radiology. The TAT is too tight, the IS issues complex, and the radiologists do not want to have to proof their reports. You would be better off with medical records or small offices to start to build your size and reputation.

I think it is tied into working at home and not exercising the gray matter, except for MT stuff.

Nasty!
That is truly disgusting. nm

Yes, it is disgusting. SM
I go to several MT jobs boards and they are all alike.  I have been in this business for a long time and can do most specialties including hospital reports to include operative reports.  I see the ads where they want "client ready" transcription and have to chuckle when they offer 7 to 9 cpl.  I have gotten to the point where I will not even apply for those positions.  Do I have hospital experience?  You bet I do.  So why are overseas transcriptionists taking my money when the MTs in the States can do the job better and just as fast.  I stopped applying to those companies with their insulting line rates.  Then they try to screw you over some more by not paying for spaces.  If US MTs refuse to work for these companies and they are not allowed to send the work overseas, who is going to suffer?  A lot of hospitals and states are now making it known that the work is not to be sent overseas and it is in their contracts.  Are things looking up?  I truly hope so, but I doubt it.
That is disgusting. nm

IC positions offer no benefits, employee positions off full benefits, so if you do not need
benefits, then IC would be best.
OMG. That's disgusting. Especially after just lowering our pay.

You are disgusting yourself to post
about another human being!! You ought to be ashamed.
and sin is sin. it's abominable, disgusting, and
you'll never be saved and do that.
I never thought he was hot. He's disgusting. sm
And his personal antics with many women (other than his wives, that is other women when he is still married) make him someone I would never admire in any way.  As someone said below, GROSS.  Ugh!   Like a spindly leg strutting spider with 20 pounds of collagen in their lips.  Yes, I know they are real.  But Ugh still stands!
disgusting husband
Is she a friend of yours or just an acquaintance?  Perhaps you could talk to her.  She can't possibly be happy.  Maybe all she needs is some support to get out on her own and away from him.
I would report that. It is disgusting.

Wow - how disgusting is right. Sure shows you
It's right up there on the Sickening Scale with that video someone posted a while back of "trainers" teaching companies how to bypass American workers' job applications, so they can then justify their outsourcing by saying there "aren't enough American workers".
There sure aren't - not when you kick all their applications under the rug or into the round file!
We need to lobby for laws in this country that will put a heavy tax on companies who outsource American livelihoods to other countries. We might as well put "For Sale" signs on our beaches, farmland, and national parks, because that's what'll be coming next.
kind of sick and disgusting...

Disgusting commercial, huh?! Hahaha
I use Brawny paper towels and Lysol Kitchen spray on counters and appliances. I use plastic scrubbies on the sink and anything I need to scrub up before the dishwasher and the put the scrubbie in the dishwasher as well. I spray Lysol on the sink and faucets before I go to bed.

I started this when I saw Oprah's show on women who horde and won't clean/throw away anything. The experts she had on the show had checked one woman's kitchen sink for bacteria and compared it to her commode and the commode was cleaner! I about fell over. I have dishcloths and dishtowels but they are washed after every single use! Ewwwwww!
Yes, he was out of breath - could hardly get words out - it was disgusting

the game sounds pretty disgusting...

They type like they talk - and fly under the radar - disgusting!
No one at the top cares as long as they get their third party payment.
Disgusting is an understatement but nobody can/will stop it. Nobody cares but us is right.

How can they have "English typing skills" but not need to know how to speak English?  How can they understand it if they can't speak it?  Mind boggling.  And how do they get away with it?  Because it's cheap and JACHO doesn't care nor does the organization formerly known as AAMT (new title without "American" and "Transcriptionist").

Motel housekeeper when I was 16. That was a physically demanding and disgusting
job. The supervisor was always riding us to clean faster, but we made less money if we got the job done in fewer hours. Why on earth would we work faster to clean a room in 20 minutes or less just so they could pay us less?

Anyway, it was a nasty job. The things people do in motel rooms were often immoral and illegal. I had teenaged boys on a soccer team throwing condoms at me. People used to rent rooms to party, get drunk, do drugs, and other things. They left behind pornography and other things an innocent 16 y.o. had never even seen before.

Then this adult male "guest" was wandering down the hallway in just a pair of shorts. We were supposed to help the "guests" so I asked if he had misplaced his room key. He pulled his shorts off and came after me. I grabbed a bottle of acid to spray him in the eyes and called security, but the cops never found him. He had overturned the bed in his room and set up a pup tent in there. What a weirdo. I quit that same week because the housekeeper supervisor was a shrew. She's still there 20 years later. Never had any motivation to do anything else, I guess. That job taught me how to clean thoroughly and quickly, but also taught me that I would never be anyone's grunt.
I had a really disgusting burp from a doctor. Didn't even say excuse me.

Have you ever had someone dictating with a piece of hard candy, clicking around on his teeth in the back of his mouth?

go to chat room on web site and find out. i'm working but if you find out, let me know.
creepy dude.
I find most of my abbreviations here. Scroll all the way down until you find the abbreviation box.

Right Now, we do get benefits
but MQ is trying to change that, of course. They are trying to get our hospital to outsource everything to them, which would then mean i can work for MQ or leave. I hate MQ. I want to see them exposed for what they really are and I want to see everybody that have hurt, be compensated.
You can do that with benefits too, ya know.
:)

As long as you're happy, it pays your bills, and you can make ends meet at tax time, that's all that counts. :)
Is that with or without benefits

Do they have Editor positions as SE?

If you don't need benefits, look into
doing house cleaning for individuals on a weekly basis. Lots of under-the-table money to be made from what I used to see when I worked at a bank (and saw deposits of gals doing housekeeping). Weekly house cleaning is no longer limited to the well off professionals.

I was in QuickLube, or whatever it's called this week, and a 70-something lady was talking about her work as a home aide - light housekeeping and cooking and companionship - no medical stuff. She got her referrals through her church and was charging $10/hour.
Unfortunately, some of us need benefits.

Not even in the salad days did I make anywhere near that.  In fact, most of the services I know don't charge that.

It's all about the benefits
Hospitals don't want to pay the benes. The hospital where I used to work was sold and the new owners threw us all out plus the service we used. My benefits alone costed the hospital roughly $5000 per year x that by 15 transcriptionists. Plus they provided everything for us, equip, desk, computer, etc.

Apparently they contracted a service for X amount of dollars per month/year to do it for them. No messing around with line counts and they always know what it will cost them.
Can you name some benefits for
the American MT to become certified? Please tell me how AAMT has changed the average MT's job security, satisfaction, etc. All I see is that they have given up on us and moved overseas to start programs and gain overseas members.
well, there are some benefits to having your own
was asking you to go away. A blog serves a similar purpose and in fact you may find a wider range of readers, interactions and help than what you may get on this web site. Yes, I have seen others here say they would start their own blog and have seen a couple of them, so it wasn't an only you thing (at least I didn't see it that way).
Benefits can add up to $10,000 though. (nt)

Tax benefits

I guess I just like knowing I own my own business and I made it what it is today. I like getting out and delivering.  Talking to the people in the office making personal contact. Working as much as I want.   I also like the write offs and paying less than $1,000 taxes per year.  To each their own.   To me this is the answer. Most on this board all they do is say that there is no way to make 50K a year and I simply gave an example of how you can do it.  I am not  knocking you, you seem to have done it I just like doing it "my way" as Frank Sinatra would say.   Best of luck to you.

If you do not need benefits then you would
there is more leg work involved especially when first landing an account.  The other problem is that even when you have a contract with them they can break it any time for someone who charges less.  So you must remain humble with your pricing.  When you have your own accounts, you have cut out the middle man, BUT, you must chase down your money.  In my experience, the Transcriptionist must get paid LAST because most weeks, I have to ask nicely or do without.  Have a safety net, an account to borrow from until you get paid because a lot of the time they pull OOPS, forgot your write your check, or OOPS doc needs to sign it or you just wonder when you'll get it.  Just SOME things to consider, but good luck on whatever you decide.
IC - No benefits with this doc
I was total IC before. I dropped my other accounts and went the employee route for the bennies and so taxes are taken out. Now I get days and holidays off, too. That's a first. Worked 9 years 7/7, 12-14 hours a day, 3 days off a year for family.

What no one seems to realize that in my area, money is tight and so I can't charge the same as someone in a city or heavily populated area can charge. Jobs just aren't here.
Benefits
They cannot give you benefits if you are an IC. If they did they would have to turn you into employees. This is not just my opinion they are IRS rules.
My pay is okay - just no more benefits

It has become a matter of taking a higher cpl w/o benefits or lower cpl with benefits in this industry...as well as those employers who want (example) 7 years of experience for 5-6 cpl.  Anyone accepting that should be ashamed to call themselves an MT.  I make only slightly less than I did 5 years ago.  Now I make 11 cpl on a 65 line count versus 11-12 cpl on a gross line - the difference though, is that I had paid benefits then which I don't have now.  The other difference is that when I could work in DOS and create all reports into one file to send at the end of the day, I could routinely produced over 350 lph (and never, ever work more than 6 hours a day, 5 days a week!).  Now that I have to work on a platform that requires individual reports being submitted, I've really taken a hit in how many lph I can produce.  I still work less than 40 hr/wk, though.

I truly believe in working smarter than harder.  If a company offers a platform or dictators that prevent me from making a minimum of 200 lph or more, then I don't work for them.  If I can't use my abbreviations that I've built over the past 10 years, then I won't work for that company.  If I can't have benefits paid by the company AND the cpl I want, then yes, I will be an independent contractor and take all the tax benefits I can.  Last year, I only paid $268 in federal taxes for the entire year.

I have to work around my child as well (I am single) and I am fortunate that my training days are well behind me.  I still have a good life and good income, but I am choosy about the company I will work for.  When I am older and things change significantly that I make less than $40k/yr, then I will go back into coding and have a job with good pay and benefits.  I can't see staying in a profession if it doesn't benefit me the way I need it to.

About benefits

After I wrote my last post I was just thinking about the benefits.  I was with Keystrokes for a while and you can be an employee with them and still get the flexibility of 24 hour TAT and therefore you can get the benefits.  So it's not impossible to get benefits and flexibility.  I know the Keystrokes ortho accounts offer 24 hour TAT, not sure if it's all of the ortho accounts, but I know some of them do.  I'm not sure if they have other specialties that have the 24 hour TAT.  Good luck.

Benefits
The only "benefits" an IC gets is being able to make their own schedule.  We do not get any medical, dental, retirement.  We furnish our own equipment, do our own taxes, and do not get paid vacation or holidays.
