I don't have IT, but SM

IT has lots of features you can use.
In the bigger picture, though, there are basically two big classifications of dictation to develop expansions for: Dictator- and client-specific phrases, headings, paragraphs, entire reports.
And the other is the whole English/medical language, so that almost everything is abbreviated--individual words, ALL variations of standard phrasology, every imaginable heading (just keep stuffing them in). Think of what stenographers do. There's at least one stenography system that uses the English alphabet instead of curliques and dashes--getting a book on that would provide you with a ready-made system. I didn't know about that when I started and missed out, but for instance, Y is "any" for me, YTG "anything."
Go to work initially, to be sure, on your current work (IT can help you big time), but don't make the mistake some do of only storing dictator-specific phrases and blocks of text. By also building a dictionary of expansions with virtually all words and phrases, you won't be tearing your hair constantly typing variations on the usual out the long way. And if you want (or have to)change jobs, you won't be in big trouble, facing months of tiny paycheks while you build up speed from scratch again. Right now a lot of people are building themselves into a position this way where they simply can't afford to lose their jobs.
