Does anyone do any extra typing on the side...other than medical transcription? Maybe something like manuscripts or anything like that? I love to type and have my medical accounts, but just looking for something a little extra, without being on a strict TAT, etc. Just wondering. Thanks.

Hi, any IC's that are paid on salary? or is this a reasonable pay I should ask for?
My docs have now switched to a new platform, which does not utilize counting lines, which is how I am paid now. They suggested paying by time, but that would be irritating for me to have to keep track and multiply and do all sorts of other stuff by hand (rather than having software to do it).
I have thought about asking them to pay me on salary. I have been with them for 7 years with no raise. NO RAISE EVER. Seven years this September, and I have made between 25 and 28 thousand dollars each year with them.
I am thinking of asking for $36,000 a year and was wondering how reasonable that is. I get absolutely no benefits from them and in turn, have to pay my own health insurance, retirement, taxes, etc. (so really it would be about 24K a year).
Any advice? thanks so much

Why would they care? Management is paid salary and that's all they're concerned with.
We're an expendable commodity to those people. If we quit, we're easily replaced.

HRBLOCK.Com has classes online. If your good in math, might be a good fit. Flexible hours, good pay. I have my own clients but have worked for them before. I plan to get an advanced certification to specialize in sole proprietors, partnerships, S-corps, etc. Just shi----n around, I can make $5000 during tax season. Before I had my baby, I made 14,000 during tax season.....Sky is the limit if you're a fast learner.....

Does anyone else earn extra money.....
I transcribe 200+ pages per month at $5.00 a page for a local hospital and write resumes as well. The resumes pay better and have over 7000 in my repertoire, however, my first love is MT.

My hands kill me just about every day now, and looking at my hands i have muscle breakdown and twitching, so i'd like to cut down on typing. Want to find something to do on the side to earn maybe 1000 to 1500 dollars a month. Was thinking about ebay, but i'm doubtful I could make that much, even though they hype up the advertisement by saying you could make 3000 MINIMUM. I'm just desperate and feel like my hands are about to fall off. I've spent close to 1000$ this year alone in keyboards, gloves, splints, doc visits, meds, changed my station around, hot soaks, cold soaks, exercises, stretches, vitamins. still my hands just sing every day esp at night. So any extra money earning ideas you guys? thanks |

I have been working a lot over the past several months. I had gotten sick and missed some work so many months back. Got behind on my mortgage, car payment, etc...I am almost caught up but it seems like the little bit more that I have to go, about 2k, I cannot get caught up. My work is limited...Any suggestions? I am so close to throwing in the towel, which is not good. My husband is disabled. Help.

does anybody get paid extra for doing STATs? sm
if so, how much of a difference to you get for STATs versus normal cues? i am tired of getting hounded by STATs cuz they are "urgent" but yet no extra compensation for them. these days it seems over half my work load is STATs and my TAT is 24 hours for my regular pay versus 4 hours for STATs with no extra money.

walk him daily, play ball daily, he sleeps in my office daily while I work. Yeah, I got a lot of money, NOT HARDLY. And, my dog is HORRIBLY HORRIBLY ABUSED because he wears a collar around his neck. It's people like you that make me sick. I am done defending my use of the shock collar. I am going to continue with it and my dog will continue to be pampered , educated, fed, kept warm, and love me for everything that I do for him even when I remind him that his barking needs to stop. So, with that said, I will not respond to any more of your CRAP in reference to the shock collar.
And she needs extra money, so the suggestion was warranted.

You know full well if the foreign MT was the same price they'd quit looking there too. It's all about the money. Who's he fooling?
It means you get paid for every character
you type, including spaces.
Example - The cat in the hat.
All letters and spaces in the sentence (including the 2 spaces after the period).
Blank lines are not counted as you did not type on them.
Many MTSO have a 65-character line count, so therefore for every 65 characters you type, you get paid for 1 line, whether it takes 1 line or 10 lines, it is the charcters that are counted, not the actual line of typing.
No need to wonder..It always means less money for the MT and more money for MQ.

which is exactly what the companies want you to do, type the report but for less money. So.... I ask... why do the MTs continue to allow this????? It is only going to get worse. Really... something needs to be done and done NOW. ALL MTs have GOT to stick together and STOP allowing these companies to continuously drop your pay and demand you do more work!!

The only way to make money now is typing SM
in shorthand, using ShortHand or some other word expander. I don't type anything out unless I have to. Not only long words, but words like "what", "been", "the", (of course). There are websites you can visit or books you can buy on the topic. The above way to make "expansions" are quite cumbersome and not effective.
LOL, yea I realized that but not getting paid for typing here and
didn't want to burn dinner. Maybe it's psychological. LOL, anyway I agree it was funny, even though I'm blushing!
Getting paid only for STRAIGHT TYPING
My company set me up to work from home - - - I am new at this and confused and am need of imput from others in the field. Currently I get pain 8 cents per line. I have a quota of 7,000+ lines a week - -however the computer I have been set up with does not enable me to add programs (if I wanted to add a word expansion program) and, interestingly, the ability to set up macros in MS Word has been disabled.
With that said - - - For example, I will type a new consult on a patient that ends up being 4 pages in length. I want to "work smarter and not harder" (who doesn't) so I incorporate word Expanders that I have in MS Word Auto Text as well as an Auto Text "intial office visit" outline which includes the doctor's "normal" exam. All I have to do are make any necessary changes with each individual patient. We use a nationally known dictation program/softwear which enables me to go to a "statistics" screen to see the line count for each document I have typed. I have been finding, however, that on these 4 page consults, I am only being credited for 60 lines or so - - - aren't there 65 lines PER PAGE - - -why is it not 4 times that amount?? Looks like I am only getting paid for STRAIGHT TYPING, not for the total line count of the end product.
add to that ASR, getting paid 1/2 for basically re-typing reports! nm

NOPE, took a lot of money, dad paid,
bought, ran to meetings, everything to try to make it work. Multilevel just don't work for the little guy and that's the way they're set up. Try as you might to change the way people think about multilevel, it's possible that a lot of little people already got stung by that bee!

It wasn't right in that I paid money up front
for a 3 part procedure. The physician performed 2 of those, ok. He FORGOT the face lift. I worked at the same hospital he was head of the plastic's department over. Got that so far? When I told him on my first followup visit he forgot he wrote me an IOU on his letter head office stationary. You following so far? After this time he did not want to take my calls about the money and I went to hospital mediation. He told them he would not be part of that. Hold on- there is more. He started calling me personally at my home in threatening manner. Eight (that is 8 in numerical) months after my original surgery he dictated my report and put in he did the face lift- He falsified a legal document on me and my hubby was always with me- I can not fight city hall- Hold on, we are getting to the end- I called lots of lawyers- all said no case. Elective surgery- not an emergency appendectomy, not brain tumor surgery - elective- are you there with me? I finally because I HAD TO HAVE A JOB, just let it go. I could not risk my job by going after this department head surgeon that worked at my hospital. I hope you understand this time and if not, can't explain any better.
I got into this because it paid more money and I didn't have daycare expenses.
I have more time for a social life now that I work at home. I go to lunch or coffee with family and friends. I used to run errands on my lunch half-hour at my old job and either pay my bills or balance my checkbook on my breaks. I know all the other parents at the school now, so we get together on weekends or chitchat at the school. When I used to work outside the home, I was so exhausted from dealing with crabby people all day long that I just wanted to isolate myself at home on evenings and weekends. Now that I work at home, I actually seek out friends to keep from getting isolated.
Check with the school that you paid money to for MT training.
If they can't help you get a job afterwards, then you've been robbed.

I am a very social person and I entered this job at home because it paid more money
than the jobs in the office and I was a single parent. I just learned to balance my life outside the work environment with things that did allow me to use my social skills
go ahead. i don't feel supervising is any different than pressure of MT or any other job.
so you must transcribe, listen to excuses and have patience. i do that now while transcribing. i listen to excuses why there are no pay increases or why there is no work. i am patient while waiting for work and being told to cut back on work as there isn't enough or work more cause there is too much. i am quite sure i know as much as my supervisor as far as common sense and logic.
How would a person break into editing, supervising or other
home-based positions in the medical transcription field? Are these positions usually hired from within? Or advertised on nonMT websites? TIA - thanks in advance.
Speaking of rip-offs, anyone have any advise on how to get back money paid for a product you never
received? I needed a Dictaphone C-phone for my job (was using a loaner) and put a note on the equipment board pertaining to this back in May. A woman contacted me stating she had one for $100 (I only needed the phone, power supply and phone cord). She said she was going away for 3 weeks and to Western Union the money to her that night and she'd send it out the next day. I did not like the high pressure and was still shopping around anyway so I told her I'd wait the 3 weeks and contact her then. About a week later she emailed me stating she cut her trip short but was going away again that Friday (It was Tuesday), I had by this time decided to buy her phone. I mailed out that day via Priority mail a M.O. for $100. She was very anxious for the money, and thought I'd sent it Express Mail, which I of course informed her I did not. She stated that it should be there by Friday and if she did not see her mail that day that she'd have her mom check the mail and then mail the C-phone to me. After 2 weeks I emailed her as I had no phone as yet, no response. A week later still no phone, emailed again, no response. Then I called her (looked it up) and she claimed her email was "broken" and she had not received my emails but would email me back as she was on her way out the door to a baseball game. I asked her how can she email me back if it was broken??? So then she backpedaled and said she'd call me.... I held my breath at that point. So the next day by some miracle I get an email from her stating her mother had mailed it regular mail, no way to track it, etc. So supposedly it is lost. I emailed her back which it appeared she did not get as she did not respond to my questions but she did email me again saying she'd return my money.....again I am holding my breath. That was 8 days ago. She is in OK, I am in VA. If she sent me a refund promptly it would have been here by now. Now when I call her, she does not pick up, and no answering machine either. I am planning now to mail her a copy of her email and my response to getting my money back. I am assuming at this point that I was taken for a sucker and was obviously too trusting. Right now I don't have $100 to burn (who does?) with my drives to the hospital (60 miles round trip) for my daughter's chemo, doctor visits, etc, on top of only making about 1/2 what I used to make due to the changes in my life right now. In the meantime I got kicked off the account for which I needed the C-phone for (add insult to injury here) due to problems at the company I was working for, so that does not sweeten my disposition any. So does anyone have any idea how I can squeeze her and get my money back? Contact the police there for fraud? Small claims court in OK? I am a persistent pain in the butt and will keep at her until I get my money back, if it is fraud then she picked the wrong person to screw with, if it is on the up and up then it is unfortunate but she should have insured it to cover her own (and mine) butt, and sent in with a delivery confirmation too....but you know what they say about hindsight. Any ideas???
We paid hourly with incentive for high production. So she's making money when she's just
sitting there. I don't know if it is a habit or not because this is the first time I've really had to work with her for any length of time. I usually only work a couple of hours a day with her when our shifts overlap. I think I'm definitely going to ask the girl I'm filling in for what she thinks about her.

Extra shift or extra work
Has anyone taken on an extra job or shift with a new company for a just a few months to get out of debt or to be able to pay for something that is needed or wanted? I am thinking about taking on another job to get out of a stressful debt situation. I am just afraid I would be going into another stressful situation working more hours with the very busy family schedule I have.
1099 ? Is the amount on the 1099 only the money paid to you in 2008. So if I did not receieve payme
than that $$ would be on my 1099 for 2009 not 2008?? I have to invoices that were due to be paid in 2008 but I never received the $$ until January of 2009. Do I have to claim that money on my taxes this year or next??? Thanks in advance for your help.
