Bose Headset
I remember someone talking about getting these headsets. Did you get them? Did you like them for transcription? I'm hoping to get them for Christmas, but would like to know if they are worth it.
I was just the opposite, I bought the Bose to replace a set of Shure E2c
The sound quality for both brands is excellent, but the Shure ear buds, because of the way they fit, seem to block out the ambient noise in my environment better and provide more focused audio. I like the Bose for my iPod for the opposite reason though, because they don't block out the ambient noise as well. A lot of people are bothered by the way the Shures fit though, so I know they aren't for everyone. I have a set of E3c's now and, although I am finally used to them, I think for transcription the E2c's are better.
I bought a new headset today but
it is stero? and only works on one side. Isn't there an adaptor I can buy from Radio Shack which will make it work in both sides? Anyone know.
also bought from them, very reliable and loved the headset NM

Why I'm Sorry I Bought Quick Look on CD sm (sorry, long)
The QLDB on CD runs with Word but when you click on the icon, it doesn't just open up another window so that you can go between what you're working on and the dictionary, it puts up a solid screen and you can't mouse in and out of it. My old DOS online dictionary used to bring up the word you were on in your text, with the definition, which would be very useful, but this one does not, you're back to A every time. Also you cannot copy and paste, it's just not interactive. Lastly, after clicking to turn the thing on, then clicking a second time to start the dictionary program, (why would you click the icon on your desktop unless you wanted to use the thing) as a third step you can enter your drug name, it brings it up, but not with the dosages. You have to click on the drug name once again to get to that screen.
Now you might have to write out the information on a note pad, especially if you were looking up a med that was new to you or hard to spell. Then you have to close the dictionary to go back to your Word document.
I have read on other discussion boards about this and the impression was that the author probably didn't have any say whatsoever in how the text was presented to the user, that the publisher was responsible for the features.
It's just a technically challenged piece of software, not up-to-date with what transcriptionists require these days.
I don't think it was worth the money, even half would have been too much. I'm sure it has a lot of great information on it, I read about it on MT Chat by the author before I bought it, he was bragging about the features, but it is not helpful to me. There are free sites on the net that are much more useful.
None of us have enough money to buy reference materials that are not up to date, and even though just released, this is an out of date.
Save Your Money
Wise
It's been a long, long time since I've used a C-phone, sm
but I do think jobs can be paused.
I've been doing this a long, long time...
I used to make $70,000 and up a year and did so for most of the late 80s and 90s (one girl used to make six figures a year working 7 days a week!) Because we were making more money than the supervisors and Medical Records Directors in hospitals, they began to switch to transcription services which were sprouting up all over the place. Plus AAMT came into existence and even though in the beginning it claimed it was to fight for transcriptionists (although assured us it was NOT a union), they eventually morphed into an organization that was more management friendly. They developed the "guidelines" and the 65-char line. That was the beginning of the end for those high-end wages. Then all those mickey mouse transcription schools popped up, and now outsourcing overseas. YES, we're complaining.
I'm studying coding too. I've been looking at different courses plus I bought SM
Step by Step Medical Coding by Carol J. Buck along with the workbook that goes along with it. So while I'm trying to decide on a school, I can be studying on my own. According to the AHIMA website though with my years of experience as an MT, I am eligible to take the certification exam without having to complete a formal coding course. Transcription is considered part of the HIM department and thus if you have worked in any position in HIM, you are qualified to take the test.
So, I may find that studying on my own will benefit me better than paying money for a course I'm not sure about. I also have the benefit of tuition reimbursement with my employer and I may take advantage of that if I find a program I like.
So, I'm with you! Let me know what school you decide on or what avenue you decide to take. Might help me make the decision in the long run!
I've bought Allegra from Canada on-line
sites for years and have never had a problem. I usually get the generic of Allergra. Try progressiverx.com. Prices are great!
You are just BEGGING to be tossed out
not to mention how clueless you are. Perhaps if you work for a group of docs..but if your work is coming from surgery centers, clinics, etc...YOU are indeed clueless because as administrators change (AND THEY ALWAYS DO) the first agenda is cost cutting and to see 15 cpl going out for transcription when ABC Co down the street will come and do it for 10-12 CPL...you will lose accounts..
We did that, too. Tossed the drawer, removed the runners.

it's what you know, not how long you've been around.
I've worked with long-time MTs that didn't do very good work, had limited knowledge...and vice versa. What we ought to have is not what we're likely to be able to negotiate for either. Many factors involved, but i'd say 9 cpl for 10 yr or more...but best to get your foot in the door, where you are happy to be, and then negotiate up if possible when they see what you're made of.
we've come a long way, baby!
As the old hymm goes "I wouldn't take nothing for my journey now".... I did work on the belts too, my brother was my boss and loved to torture me about it! Talk about archaic! Now I am So spoiled! (and so thankful).
One more thing, I've been in MT and QA long enough to know that just
feel like you had no trouble with the terminology, doesn't mean you didn't have trouble.
I have come across many MTs who believe they know what they are doing and really don't.
Not me. But I've waited for this for a long time.
Been through the daily grind for over 20 years. At one point I even had all four of my kids in different schools, having to drop them off before leaving for work. I don't miss it one bit. I still laugh when I'm lying on the couch in my pajamas reading the morning paper while all of the commuters are fighting for a place in line at Dunkin Donuts.
But with 4 kids, 3 still at home, my house has always been like Grand Central Station. I have never been able to complain about the quiet for sure. Hubby works nights so is here during the day and starting early afternoon there is an endless stream of hungry teenagers in and out as well as messy little grandkids. I don't remember the last time that I was completely alone for more than an hour. I wouldn't know what to do.
Oh, I've been doing this many long years, so I understand what SM
you're saying. I've been dept. supervisor, QA, all of it -- all long enough to realize that I am not infallible, for sure.
What I will say is that spending two hours reading reports aloud is not going to help me in any way, shape, or form. If I thought for a moment that it would make my work better, I'd be willing to sacrifice the time and do it.
It's really sort of like a tic, what I do when I transcribe, and I can't help it. I have tried to let stuff sit there and have the spellcheck catch it, but it's like a reflex action. I've backspaced to it before I had time to think about it. I know that I'm not really using my resources very efficiently.
I think I said in my first post that I started on typewriters and went from there to a computer with just a keyboard and monitor, and the only editing tool available to me was the backspace key. Mercy, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I transcribed that way until 1993 (? thereabouts), when I got my first spell check and word expander.
Unfortunately I don't. I've had it for a long time in the closet. nm

Best post I've read in a long time.
I tend to go back and forth with my feelings about this profession. In the mornings I am glad I do not have to get up, get ready and go to an office. Many times in the evening, after I have during the day and still have work to do, I feel like stuffing it all. Many times I am disheartened when I get my paycheck, but I am glad to be getting one, while my sister worries about getting laid off from her manufacturing job. MT has advantages and disadvantages.
Oh, my. That's the funniest thing I've read in a long time.

Fun With "Rick" and Jane is the best/funniest movie I've seen in a long time! s/m
Okay, it's not Rick and Jane, but the censor wouldn't let me put the short form of Richard. LOL
Oh I know, I've studied legal aspects of med recs, too, been in this a long time. sm
I totally get everything you say, and I don't argue with any of it.
But I work for a national that has had the same errors in the same normals for YEARS, so we're talking probably thousands of charts by now. I can't fix years of apathy. If I was in charge, you betcha I would.
The doctor's name is what's on the document, it still comes down to him/her.
Honestly that is the most intelligent thing I've heard from an MT co. in a long time. Completely
You have to be able to retain knowledge.
You have to know how to reserach effectively.
You have to be able to use deductive reasoning.
You have to have confidence in your decisions and not constantly "need assurance."
You have to be able to separate sounds in your head that are both internal and from multiple external forces.
Some of these can be taught, some are innate, some take years to develop, some either you got it or you don't.
Trash
Are they dumping the stuff in their yards? If so, call their landlords. We had this problem and I would just call over and over until it was cleaned up.
Right. You are offered their trash, but not $1K.
They're willing to help you as long as you lower yourself. Just pure head games. And some parents would love to see their kids homeless for a chuckle. Makes no sense to me - mine were the same. They were so jealous that my husband and I stuck it out and made our marriage work, are still in love after 30+ years with great kids. When we ran into 1 bump in the road and needed a tad of help, they sat and laughed in our faces, even their innocent grandkids. You just never know what goes in some peoples' minds. Only count on yourself and God, literally. I'm here for you!!
Don't Trash MslaMT!
Oh, please, please! unless you know what you are talking about.....and by this I mean first-hand knowledge and not going by personal feelings....do not judge another by what they say or how they take care of their dog.
Debarking, shock collars, and citronella collars all have their place. What has happened to just plain ole' put the dog in the house? If the owners are at work and the dog cannot be trusted alone, a crate works wonders! Dogs generally bark a lot because they are lonely and/or bored.
The dog is not to blame, the OWNERS are.
BTW, MslaMT, when a dog is debarked, the voice box is not removed. Tissue in the vocal cords are reduced either by a surgical incision or laser. This reduction only changes the pitch of the bark, it does not eliminate it. The dog can still bark and he/she can bark to their heart's content....they have no idea they've had a procedure done, all they know is that they are not being told to shut up it. Their bark can come back over time, but this is not the norm.
I wouldn't trash you....sm
It is a built-in word Expander for Dictaphone EXText platform. Any ideas why people use both?
I bought a wedge at Michael's for about 59 cents. Bought one for my SM
Lanier station so I could see the display and one for my keyboard.
definite trash. ewwwwwwwwww. nm

nobody looked down on you that you know of specifically but there is that "trailer trash"
mentality the general public thinks about trailer people. You have heard the jokes.

sad for you girls
sounds like you ladies are finding your boys in all the wrong places. MEN don't cheat. BOYS cheat. You need to find a MAN and then you will find yourself in a REAL relationship like never before and you will be HAPPY and have TRUST. It CAN happen as it happened to me. Good luck.
My girls like me
Well, my girls like working for peaNUTS. Oh golly, my sense of humor has gotten the best of me, bad boy Frank.
mean girls
hope you never find yourself in a bad situation - you have no sympathy or regard for other humans
The girls are going down . . .
Kelly was soo bad. I think and hope it will be the three boys remaining. Katherine's dress was a little much wasn't it? She had visible panty lines. Chris was very sexy.
Mean Girls!
Well, here I go! Gotta vent. We use IM to talk to the QA person and the boss for the small MTSO I work for. Many times the boss will turn "Busy" on, so you can't ask her anything. If she wants to talk to you, she will, but if she does not, she won't. Same goes for the QA. Sometimes I feel so small! I do not bug them unless I really need something, but apparently they feel I am bugging them too much. Days go by that I never IM either one, so its not like every day I bug them! I feel very insignificant when they do this! Am I overly sensitive?
bose
I have Bose Triports and after a few hours they actually hurt my head.. on top, they are almost too heavy to wear for longer than a few hours at a time. But I will put up with the pain for the SOUND QUALITY is unbeatable. Have turned my volume down to almost nothing now, whereas before I was always listening to everything on high!
I have the Bose
with the 5 CD disk changer. The sound is magnificent!! Especially if you like classical or opera. You feel like you are there in person.
When I lived in a 2-story house, I had my office in a loft upstairs and the Bose downstairs and I would put on music and could hear it all over the house, even up to the loft.
I am now in a one-story and have it in my office. It has a remote which makes it very convenient to mute or turn down the sound when I have a difficult dictator to listen to.
I bought it on monthly payments with no interest (next best thing, or even better, than paying cash). I see that Bose still has that offer going once in awhile. With the CD changer, I think it was about $1200.
I feel it was a very good purchase and would do it again.
Bose CQ 2 (sm)
Like I said, I just received them yesterday, tried them, and packed them right back up, didn't even want them for 30 days knowing that I wasn't going to keep them. I just got this Radio Shack pair with the ear cups, good sound reduction. The only thing is that the volume must be up louder than that with the Bose. Even my husband, who is a fanatic about stereo equipment agreed with me. I was searching for better clarity mainly, noise reduction secondly, but the clarity is only as well as the recording. My pair at Radio Shack was about $19.99. Hope you can get a pair.
I use the Bose
headphones. They are expensive but phenomenal in cutting any outside noise.
