and I studied for a year, giving it 8 and 10 hrs a day, to train to be an MT. I will be honest, I hated the practice tapes and I didn't have a good transcribing machine at the time, so I didn't do them. I'd love to say this hurt me in the long run, but it didn't. I have an excellent ear (my one big MT skill) and I work doing a ton of ESLs. I am not much of a typist, but I never have been. I know my Expander extremely well and that compensates for what I view as fairly poor typing habits. I have a photographic memory for certain things and I do go and read about disease processes because I am interested, and with my knowledge of anatomy, physiology and terminology, I have a good grasp on what I am reading.
I would say knack because once I got to using an expander and knowing it fairly well I watched my income double in about 4 months' time and triple with a year. I have worked hard to make 5 times my initial MT income, but I have done it.
I have a friend, a fellow MT who has about 5 to 6 yrs in. I have helped her with her expander and various other things. She won't deviate from specialties she already knows to learn new things (a must if you are going to succeed) and she won't tackle ESLs either. She is a very good typist where I am not, but she has not been nearly as successful. She even has training that is superior to mine, and hasn't been able to progress.

I'm slowly getting the knack of this keyboard....
i think you have to think of each hand working on separate keyboards. Hoping my speed will increase. It definitely relieves the pressure on my neck,
My previous one was the standard Dell rectangular keyboard.
