Some companies pay you for whatever font you are working in and in this case it is Courier 10, which is the smaller font. Some companies have a definition of a line, meaning a line is no more than 65 or 72 characters, etc.

Courier 10 but I had MD who wanted ariel 11
Ariel 11 is in their favor - not ours as MTs, many more characters fit onto one line of type with that one. Accepted standard for years in most communities I do believe used to be Courier 10; perhaps that has changed through the years. My MDs don't care what font I use.
By the way, I didn't have ariel 11 available for this female MD (was on WP5.1 at the time) and did her account for a year and then dumped her - she was too rude (heard she goes through a new MT every single year) and had insisted that I credit her 5 lines per report for the entire year. After I did the math, I lost $1000 that year. Not in this biz to lose $$. So, I gave her a couple of options which she was not happy with and then we mutually pulled the account. If they go through a new MT per year - the problem belongs to them, not me/us *grin*

My Wordperfect 11 does not have the Courier font. It has Courier New but I need just Courier. Where can I get this font? Thanks
Doubt you can charge 15 cpl for VR work to the docs - you can't even charge them 12 for straight

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think courier 12 gives 65 characters
is less characters since it's larger. So you probably have a 60-character line instead of 65. You are probably making more money this way. Plus a gross line usually pays if there is anything on a line...not just 65 characters. Each line is counted separately so if it ends with one word, you get paid for a line.
When I was taken from a gross line count to 65 characters, I estimated a 15% reduction in lines. That's just a guess.
In the past, on a typewriter, Courier 10 meant
12 characters per inch. Is it not the same for word processing programs?
Courier 10 in Word is a 72 character line.
I was offered a position for the same as you mentioned and declined. I found a position that pays 10 cents a gross line with Courier 12, 65 character line.
You do need to remember, a line is a line when paid by gross line. So, if you initials are the only characters on a line, you are paid for that full line.
Typing class was based on the old courier font (sm)
that all typewriters pre-computer used. Some typing instructors may still be doing the traditional stuff they were taught, which was not based on computer use.
AAMT didn't set this as a rule. It's common, due to the fact that the spacing of type on a computer is proportional. So one space after a period looks fine and is readable compared to the two spaces that were necessary before computers.
you don't have to charge $60/HR - all you have to do is charge a good rate and then..
work smart, not hard. If you have a great dictator, charge him 14 cpl on a 65 char gross line, then set up your templates and word expanders, you can make $80/hr. But you need all three to work together, otherwise you might only be making $60/hr. Some people are just really good at what they do - shouldn't they make more if they are more productive?
I'd still charge by line, just charge a lower
rate, like maybe 8 cpl. Do you have to pickup and deliver work? You could also setup a one-month contract until you see how it goes and then you can figure out the best way to charge and go from there. You could also charge a flat rate per page and keep it fairly low.

It is an okay deal - TR 11 font is small. Not as good a deal as Courier.
Personally, I would have to think really hard and compare reports and line counts, like the other poster below suggested, before I would jump right into it. It is probably 75-80 characters to a line +/- the single character lines you get for initials, and 2 word lines you get with op reports such as Surgeon:

Anesthesia:
etc.
It probably is comparable to 9 cpl with a larger font.

Okay well if you are going to charge 10 cpl..what do your MTs get?
Maybe they are looking out for the little people getting paid a little more?? I see a lot of aspects of this you haven't researched. Ask questions, learn from their decisions so you are better prepared next time.

I've never solicited my own accounts before, but my fiance's sister called me yesterday asking if I'd be interested in transcribing some letters for the dermatologist she works for. I said sure, since I'd like to go all independent, and this is a good way to try it out. Only problem is, I'm not sure what to charge. I'll be using the doctor's transcriber (she uses tapes, and I don't have a tape player), and it isn't decided yet whether I'll be emailing the completed letters to her, or printing them myself. What would be an average rate?

I also work for an insurance company doing claim tapes. I charge $3.00 a page. My reports can vary anywhere from a few pages up to 25 pages, which I actually did last night (I don't think I've done any longer than that). I'm not sure if this helps or not. I use Tahoma 10 with the margins the same as what you're using.

12 cents per line, 65 character line. With HIPAA issues, don't forget better grab yourself a carrier that reports will fit in to take back--one that locks. This is very important in case you are in an accident taking their reports back. It happens.

I would charge per gross line, that means every line counts, no matter what. Depends on the reports, but why not start with 12 cents a gross line. Don't under sell yourself. You'll be killing yourself for pennies. good luck.
What to charge for something like this?
I have had this account for 5 years now and they have made a change to the format of their report. The first page is basically a template with check boxes. The other three pages are figured out by 65 character count. Being that there isn't much I'm doing to the first page (checking maybe 5-8 boxes and adding little blurbs once in awhile), but I am printing this page out. Any ideas? I hope I'm making sense! I work at a mental health clinic as a transcriptionist/records person. A coworker asked if I would be interested in making some extra cash by typing some documents for him and his buddies that are in college. I am interested but have no idea WHAT TO CHARGE? 1 cent per word? i have no idea please help.

I was approached by a family doctor to do some typing for his very small company. He indicated that there are 2 other doctors in his office. I am thinking about taking the offer, but I'm just not sure how much to charge them. I noticed on the job boards that MTs are now being paid on an average of 0.07 cpl. How much more of this would I need to charge in order to actually profit from doing this? I currently get paid 0.12 cpl at a company I am working for, so what would be appropriate for me to charge these doctors then? I'm so confused.

no one is going to come out and answer this question for you. It all depends on where you live.. Call a local transcription company, make like you are a doctors office and see what their rates are.. call at least 5 of them and go inbetween.

.10 a line but all my work is done over the internet. I open an e-mail and then e-mail the work back so it does not cost me anything extra. I haven't been doing this for very long, so I am probably not the one to be giving advice, but I did want to make sure you are putting all these expenses on your taxes. You can even log your driving time, these are just things I didn't know when I first began.

I provide 48-hour turnaround. Instead of raising your rate, why not ask if you can pick-up every two days? I believe that some charge up to 14 cpl. It all depends on the practice.

due to the fact that you have to compete with nationals that outsource overseas, right? Okay, what portion of that .12 cpl are you willing to pay a sub? Would you be willing to pay .10 cpl and still make at least .02 cpl AND keep your contracts happy? That's what I did. When I had my own contracts I was happy to get good and truly experienced transcriptionists who would sign non-competitive agreements and pay them almost as much as I got per line. I felt that "something was better than nothing". So, if I only got .02 cpl it was still better than losing client, driving myself nuts working all the time, and .02 cpl adds up after a while. Furthermore, it was more than I would make if I lost the client! Are you wiling to do that, pay your sub's a very good rate - cause if you are willing to do so there are many good transcriptionists willing to work for you (myself included)!

I don't mind -- I just answered it when another MT was asking if $50 per audio hour was too low and I said yes, it was too low.
You generally charge per audio hour. I don't know what it takes other people, but I work on a 3:1 ratio, meaning 1 hour of audio takes me 3 hours to do. So I charge $75 an audio hour if it's not terribly complicated. Like I said in the other post, others charge $95 and I have even heard $115. I'm happy with it working out to $25 an hour, but I do spend additional time proofing it afterwards.
I like general because people don't seem to be as "stat" about things as in MT :) Sometimes the speaking is even nice and slow, like they are reading from a presentation so you just keep right up with it.

how should I charge?
I have been approached by a doc who wants me to take over doing his transcription. He is a face/eye plastic surgeon. Most of his stuff is all templates. The only thing I will actually have to type would be the DX and procedure and then insert the appropriate template. (He does have over 98 templates)
He wants me to give him a quote but I have no clue where to start. I normally charge by the line but this would not be fair since I am just inserting templates.
Should I charge by the page, # of reports, hourly, or what. He does about 15 cases per week and the reports average 3-5 pages (again much of it templates).
Does anyone have any experience with this. I want to give him an answer today.

After a few e-mails with this doctor today. I have proposed to him a per page charge of $2.50 to start. I looked at his previous reports, took the average per line count and adjusted it a tad lower since it is mostly his template. This way there is no question about hourly rate. Like I said...I only have to type in the diagnosis and procedure performed. He then dictates which template out of the 98 that he has to insert. (Don't know why he can't do it himself but on well.. LOL)
Here is hoping that I don't regret this decision.

I charge $60 for a
60-minute voice file, so that's $1 per minute. You won't be shortchanging him or yourself and also, he will know ahead of time the exact cost of the job.

It sounds, unfortunately, like you are allowing your fears of rejection or whatever to cause you to allow them to disrespect you.
Hopefully, there is room for adding a codicil to your contract. Even if not, In a calm and professional manner, in writing, inform them that you need to start charging for the pickup.
For example: My personal favorite is 50 cents a mile, plus a minimum of $10 per hour for the pickup. If it's 14 miles each way, it probably takes at least an hour, including time spent in the office, going back and forth from the parking lot, etc. So, the entire trip will cost them roughly $24.
Offer them the option of digital delivery or providing their own pick up and delivery, shipping of tapes, or whatever option they decide that is mutually agreeable.
Also, indicate that they need to inform you when there will be no tapes. It is not your job to call them and ask, but their job to inform you when there will be nothing to pick up on the days that you have mutually agreed will be pick up days. In the case of when you go there and find no tapes, when they did not inform you of the lack of tapes for that day, a $25 fee will still apply. If you make an appointment with a doc and do not call or show up, what happens? Most of them charge a "no show" fee. Turnabout is fair play.
It is amazing how organized the office will become once you set limits and impose charges. They might even just ship you tapes once or twice a week and extend their TAT time in the process. Or, maybe they will quickly LEARN how to accomplish digital tape delivery.

How much do you think I should charge per double-spaced page for doing a one-time project, on my own equipment, for someone doing mental health interviews for a research project? If it was 12 cents per line, how much per page would that be? This is a parent at my kid's school who knows I work for a transcription company. I wouldn't use the equipment owned by the company, I have dictaphone machine that takes tapes. I'm not sure how long the project would be or the format yet. what should I charge for a "transcription" job which does not include tapes BUT does include taking doc's charts and combining them for a single report? Don't know all the work this will take but going for the interview and hoping to set a good hourly price. They agreed to hourly, I just didn't give a price yet. They have TONS of work but don't want to outprice myself. This is an at home job that I found after tons and tons of searching......I have 12 years experience.

M-Tec is is dedicated to top-notch education and support, and that has not changed regardless of who has retired.
charge or not?
I am an IC. I worked for a clinic that has gone EMR. They are calling quite often to have me reprint reports they have lost, etc. I have taken them down there directly at least 4 times already and fax'd a few times, as well. Today, they specifically asked me not to fax a report, because it needed to look good (whatever). How would you charge for this or would you? The trip is 3 miles round trip and takes me 10-15 minutes by the time I drive down there and run the report in and come back home. I am trying to keep good communication going with them, maybe hoping they'll ask me back someday, but don't want to be a chump, either.

What to charge for book
I transcribed a book for a local gentleman and charged him $20.00 per hour. This was for ALL reedits. In fact, I'm still working on it with him and he knows it's $20.00 per hour no matter how many times he changes his mind. It's work well for both of us. I just have a hard time squeezing it in with all my other work. Hope this helps.

I have done a lot of seminars which are probably a little harder than the books as you are listening to someone speak in a large group away from the microphone sometimes but I charged - depending on the difficulty as one was building a microchip -- 10 to 12 cents a line. Gross line. Revisions were by the hour at $25. They gladly paid it.

One of the doctors I transcribe for wants me to print the notes and the cc's to other docs, but I don't know how much to charge for this. I have never had a doc ask me to do this before, as my other docs just copy everything themselves. TIA
