So perhaps you should notify your MTSO manager to alert them that there could be a problem.

Might be a newer version. I used Sylcount a while back
I switched to PractiCount myself because it gives a line count similar to that of Sylcount but you don't have to save the files in any special format. When I had Sylcount, though, I definitely had to save them in .rtf format or it would tell me it was not a Sylvan .rtf file and that I had to resave document in that format to count it. I remember because anytime you reopened a file, you also had to save it all over again under .rtf format because it would default to something else. Real PITA!
Installed newer version of AdAware and ran

What version of Word? That can't be set in newer versions. I had to do a macro --sm
I hope this link works for you. It shows how to make the macro. I use alt + semicolon for it because it seemed those would be a convenient shortcut to use. H

Here's the link (you'll probably have to copy and paste it):

Your friend has the newer version and it doesn't play .dss.
Have her get the older (4.15) version and it will work. There is a link somewhere on this site to the older version that was posted by the Administrator just a week or two ago. Do a search and it will lead you to the correct link.
If you have the Works Suite you qualify for the upgrade version.
I just recently bought the Small Business version upgrade with Word 2003 (the computer came with Works Suite)for my new computer. It still has Windows XP. I have Word 2002 with Works Suite on my other computer. I am thinking about getting the Student Teacher edition for my other computer and my mom's computer, as it can be put on 3 computers. My license with the Small Business upgrade says one computer only. I was a little disappointed about this, as I wanted to put in on both computers. I thought I could use it on both as long as I personally used both of them, but not at the same time.
They're still at version 7 and version 8 is supposed to come out this Fall, which may be compatib

Maybe newer MTs know something I don't
I type mg/dl and Kay Ciel (told long ago KCl could be confusing to someone reading). Have been doing this forever and I'm not sure if it has changed. No one has ever corrected me.
To the newer MTs here, the ones who don't

Ignore 'Shroom.  Don't let yourself get into that mentality.  Life is what you make it.  MT CAN be a very profitable profession.  It's not for everyone and not everyone can do it.  But if you are good at spelling and grammar, and you can type fast, and you are dedicated to really learning and not just doing a crap job as fast as you can so you can get paid more, your patience and hard work will pay off.

My #1 advice is:  Get a job in a hospital transcription department.  Not acute care at home for a service.  Get a job with a hospital.  The pay not NOT be as much as you could make at home for a service, but that experience will prove invaluable.  Work there for a few years.  Learn the ropes.  Learn to do all types of reports - the basic 4 plus everything else.  I have worked for a service and for a hospital and I learned so much more at the hospital.  The service was about production; the hospital was about quality.  They wanted us to really KNOW what we were typing and when there were words no one could get, the MT supervisor would ask the doctor and we would get it straight from them.  Doctors would also come down to talk to us and explain things to us sometimes, and that was a big help.  I worked at a hospital and a service at the same time and there were so many things (terms) that the service MTs didn't know that I knew only because of my hospital experience.

Now I own my own service.  I get all my accounts through word of mouth, partly (actually MOSTLY) from my contacts that I developed back when I worked IN a hospital.  I have never had to advertise.  I have always been praised for being an excellent MT.  The hospital supervisors at the hospital where I used to work know that.  When they get a call from doctors or other hospitals asking who they recommend for transcription services, guess whose number they give out?  Yep, mine.

When I first started out I didn't make much money at all.  But I worked hard and learned everything I could.  I never had an attitude like some on this board, that I wasn't being paid fairly, or that someone owed me more money, or that I was being cheated.  I worked and gained knowledge and experience, and made sure my quality was excellent, and added to my expander, and developed new ways of using shortcuts, and kept looking for the next opportunity that would move me up a little more.

I never make less than $25 an hour.  I usually make $35 to $40 an hour.  I have had an occasional hour where I made over $100 - yes, $100 - and no, I am not lying.  It was a surgery center account and one day a week I would transcribe routine cataract extractions with lens implantations.  I had that I had a template for and all I had to do is pop in the patient's name, right or left eye, and the size of the lens used.  I would do one right after the other, over and over, and make over $100 in an hour.  Would have been nice to do that all day long, but after an hour I was done with the cataract surgeries.

Anyway, don't sit there thinking you are never going to make any money in MT.  Don't listen to the people who want to bring you down.  Don't waste time thinking your glass is half empty.  Look at the opportunities that are in front of you and start taking them.  Maybe you make 8 cpl now.  Do the best work you can do for that company.  Be valuable to them.  Become an asset to them instead of a liability.  And when you find something that's a little better, do the same thing there.  Work your way up.

After you get the experience (hospital preferably), keep working and honing your skills.  Then decide "Okay, I am going to spend X hours a week working on getting my own accounts."  Maybe 4 hours every Saturday.  So you set aside that time and you think of points you want to make to potential clients.  Set up a business number or a separate phone number to receive business calls.  Put a business message on the line so if you miss a call they can leave a message.  Figure out how you will receive dictation - dictation system, TASP, or whatever.  Make flyers.  Drive around and check out potential clients in your area.  Go through the phone book or the little blue book of doctors in your area and start sending out flyers or walking door to door.  Every Saturday spend 4 hours doing the next step.  Decide you'll send out or deliver 20 flyers a week, or whatever you want.  You may not see results right away.  Don't get discouraged, just devote 4 hours a week to it, every week.

There is money to be made in MT.  You have seen people on this board tell you how much they make.  They didn't answer an ad for an MT school on a matchbook and suddenly they are making $35 an hour.  It takes time and patience and a good attitude.

From a newer MT
who does not have an extensive medical background and is only an average typist, this profession has been very stressful for me and not very lucrative.

I do learn something new every day however.

I think it takes a lot of prior skill or extra-ordinary talent to make it worth getting into for short the short term.

I am guessing it will take me a good couple of years to do halfway decent financially.
a must-read for newer MTs --
i think i might just try the 1/2 day goal method myself --
very kind of you to take the time to outline your ideas so well...

ya'll come back!!
Which one did you get...the older one or the newer one?
The ergopro is the newer one and has a USB connection.  The older one has a PS/2 connection.  The older one is far better in my opinion.  Lot of good reviews on the older Belkin board on both Amazon and Newegg.  Excellent key touch but it is a loud keyboard just to warn you.  I loved it and still continue to use it but I found that it was harder for VR because it is a big keyboard so I using a smaller split board now.  The only disadvantage to the Belkin ergoboard older model is the key markings wear off quite quickly.
For the newer MTs hearing a "v"

would not send them to the "z" section of a book or any website.  Maybe a Google search would have worked, but I didn't try it to see.

How about lightening up on the new MTs asking questions on the Word Board.  I am not a new MT (20 years), and I've asked questions.  I'm not so sure there is a "level of word asking."  Why be so brusk and hard on the new MTs?  Are you afraid they will take your job?  Don't worry there is plenty of work to go around.

I would hope if you had a question on the Word board, someone does not go on another board and post how horribly incompetent you must have been to ask that question on the Word board.

This is a wonderful resource.

This is why I uploaded the 4.15 version. It's a previous version

Newer Transolutions employee

Thought I'd put my 2 cents in - I have been with Transolutions for about 4 months now, and I agree with the statements about how nice they are - they really are.  I am working really hard to increase my production and get up to level 5, which is the higher pay.  Dolfan, do you have any suggestions on that?  You said you just stay there no matter what it takes - does that mean you just put in as much time as it takes to get that many lines in?  Does it usually take you significantly over your scheduled time?  I keep resolving to do that, but then I get tired and end up between level 2 and 3.  I am still adding docs to my glossary on a daily basis, so I keep hoping that I will get there eventually.

I agree also about the benefits - I am part time (25 hours/week), but I am earning PTO, holiday pay, etc.  When you do have to work a holiday, you get benefit pay, PLUS time and a half - I think that is fairly unusual for an MT company.

The scheduling is flexible, too.  I worked for as an IC before, but I actually found that I needed a schedule or I would leave work too late and burn out.  But, that is just me.

Hope that is informative, and Dolfan, thanks for any help in advance!  (Or any other Transolutions people out there reading this, if you have any suggestions.)

Melissa

Does anyone know if the newer versions of Escription sm
are compatible with Woord 2007?  The requirements I received some time ago stated that Word 2007 was not compatible.  Wondered if they had upgraded yet.  TIA
Works is a dumbed down version of Word and Excel. You get the full version of Word in the Suite.
The Works Suite is a cheaper way of getting a full version of Word if you don't want or need the other applications in Office.
a resounding go with propofol; this is a newer drug that
is now used in place of Versed.  You will be unconscious for the entire procedure, which means you will not feel any pain, in addition to having no recollection of the procedure. To coin a phase, "It will be over before you know it." Good luck.
Do you have a newer keyboard with commands embedded in certain ones? Don't think 5.1 had anything

Agree with Shemah. Older Works didn't have it. Newer ones
are coming bundled with Word 2002, not Word 2003.  Find out which version you need if you decide to buy a bundled package.

Changes after an upgrade
I have one of my co-workers who sent me a word file and she has Vista.  When I tried to open the file it told me I had to upgrade to be able to open the file, so I did...well now all of my folders are out of sorts and moved around in my documents.  Things I had a + before to make them be the first folders in the list are now moved to the bottom of the list.  Last things are now first......Anyone else have this problem and a fix?
Well, if the new upgrade is not as bad --sm
as the one I currently have, maybe I will try it anyway. I still have the original CD from the very first version. I suppose maybe I could go back to that. I am experiencing some computer problems at this point anyway, and my son is trying to talk me into getting a new computer with a higher processor. I have not decided yet, but if I do, it would be a bare bones kit and he would build it for me. At that point, we would have to install the original StartStop and I may just leave it at that then. Other than the few quirks that you mentioned and having already gotten my routine down to work around them, I would really hate to have to learn a whole new voice player. If the others you tried are not as good, then I will stick with what I have. Nothing is ever perfect, I guess. thanks for your input. keep smilin'
Did you upgrade from 8.0?
I searched through some "tech" forums and everyone that had upgraded from 7.0 or 7.5 absolutely hated it! Are you using the free version or did you purchase it? Can you tell me what makes AVG 8.5 better than the rest? I've always been a Norton's user, but never again! Thanks!
Upgrade will work
if you have WP installed on your system.
You won't lose anything with the upgrade.

You can upgrade memory. 512 RAM is
better, 256 would be sufficient though.   In the car you would use the foot pedal same as at home.  Put it on the floorboard and push or use hot keys.   If you are going  to travel and work would need alternative ways to download - cell phone, WiFi, dial-up, etc.  I download before I go and use my cell phone to upload if I'm not somewhere where I have another option when I need to send in work.   You can use the laptop keyboard or figure a way to use an external keyboard depending on how much space you have.
Looking to upgrade skills, though sm

just for personal reasons, as I'm still working, etc.  I see Medword has a 9 specialty CD set for $269, and of course there is the SUM Advanced package but that's $840.  My goal is to be more employable by just broadening my skills as I've only been doing ER and clinic for years (going on 10); however, I'm certainly not made of money!  ;)  Do you think the Medword one would be okay or a waste of money?  I've heard great things about the SUM program but do you think it's really necessary?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Windows upgrade
If in doubt about upgrade, please try www.worldstart.com and post a message on the message board asking your tech question and one of the techs will get back to you. They have helped me many times and are great. They sent me in the right direction for my memory upgrade and problems on my computer. They will know if it can or cannot be done. I always ask them there before I add anything on my computer. Just upgraded my memory to 512. They know about software/hardware, etc. Good luck. Try this web site, these techies know what they are doing.
I'm on their latest upgrade right now..sm..
so it's still buggy. I origiinally bought it in December of 2005. That version was worse than the upgrade I installed Saturday. I won't bother uninstalling and reinstalling after reading your email. Thanks for writing.
I've tried ByteScribe and ExpressScribe and the sound isn't as clear on them, especially when you slow down or fast forward so I'll either stick with StartStop and not use the hot keys or I'll try an external sound card for my laptop with the ByteScribe WavPlayer. I've tried the Turtle Beach Audio and that helped make things louder but it didn't help with the slow down and speed up sound clarity.
Is there anyway you can go back to the original version? If you have the original installtion CD, I would think you could. I don't since I bought it originally in Dec. 2005. Thanks again for writing.
Due to software upgrade....
Pages were not loading as usual but it's done now and forums are working fine.

Thanks for your patience.
MTStars Administration.
If it were me, I wouldn't upgrade
From what I have read, 2007 is like a whole new wordprocessing program. It is supposedly very different from what we are used to. Hopefully, someone who knows all about it will let us know more.
InScribe upgrade

I sent this question to Inscribe and the answer I received from this is below it.  I'm going to upgrade and then "back up" if I have to until I can in get a pedal.  This does at least give us warning that the upgrade will be forced later on.

Q:  I have not upgraded to 4.91 InScribe, but still use 4.3.202. I have been told that the upgrade will not allow Express Scribe?

A:  This is mixed results. I know some people are using express scribe sucessfully, but there are some issues with windows Vista and espressscribe

I believe they meanwith the new version. Also there is a USB configuration tool for footpetals built into InScribe that may work for you as well.
The only way to test it is to really just try it out. You can always uninstall the new version and download the previous version, although in the near future the new version of InScribe will be a forced update.

If you only purchased the upgrade, NO. sm
If you purchased Office 2007, YES you can install it separately.

We are getting ready to upgrade.
Supposedly it is going to be "wonderful."  I hope so.
The new upgrade was confusing to me and I just
figured out that it was set to send it to QA automatically. So annoying. There are a lot of things being corrected in my reports that I know are right too.
If it's a retail version you can. If it's an OEM version, you can't.

Software upgrade under process.
Company board is back now.

Thanks,
Webmaster@MTStars.com
The custom dictionary will come along with the upgrade if you
are upgrading over the previous version. Your autocorrect and autotext and macros upgrade too. Read the upgrade installation prompts carefully and you won't lose anything you had before.
Time for ex-company to upgrade.

My previous employers are unfortunately still in the stone age of using all dial up equipment and word perfect, etc.  I loved the job and would still be there if the work was steady.  The problem is that they do still need p.r.n. help on occasion but I am not willing to pay the 50.00 a month (I would need unlimited LD) for the second line for p.r.n. work, nor do I want to set up another ancient computer on my already cluttered desk.  I've done that for 10 years and done with it.

I've talked to another Transcriptionist and it sounds like it wouldn't be that difficult for them to upgrade in order to use internet capabilities.  Knowing these people for a very long time, they will listen if it is easy and cost effective but I'm clueless where to point them.  Any ideas?

Right now they use all Lanier and Dictaphone and almost all their equipment is due to be repaired (which I expensive and sometimes can't be done) or replaced.

Upgrade to XP or Vista? Surley you already have XP?
If you don't its time you upgraded anyway!
I think you either need to get a router that runs Win 98 or upgrade to XP nm

Have an Vista upgrade disk for
my XP Media Center and never installed it due to all the problems people were having with it. Hopefully the new windows coming out will be an improvement.

No matter what your operating system, MTs still have computer issues. It's part of the gig and goes with the territory. You are not alone in your grief. Be happy to have a hubby who has a few tricks up his sleeve.

Copy your autocorrect file before you upgrade. I did't do that, wish I had. nm

Ediscript V8 upgrade and word 2007
I need to upgrade and am hearing conflicting issues.  Has anybody used the V8 of Editscript with the Home and Student edition office 2007?  Two people from Microsoft themselves told me different answers, yes and no.  One told me that word 2007 is word 2007 no matter what bundle it comes in and the other told me that I can't run 3rd party software on the home and student edition.  Anybody have this answer?
JMO, but it still wasn't necessary to upgrade from 2000 long ago. sm
The 2000 version was very stable and 2003 broke some of the features we all favored in 2000 (and 2007 broke even more features we use often). It just wasn't necessary to upgrade for the sake of upgrading when later versions are compatible with 2000. You know what they say about if it ain't broke.... :)
I get the Stedman's and then upgrade it every year. Others prefer Spellex. nm
