are making this kind of money? I've been in this profession for over 20 years and the MOST that I ever made in a given year was $50K working for a service and that was with loads of off-the-clock overtime.  Where I work now the majority of decent work is being offshored and the American side MT's are left with terrible work to wade through.  A 'good' check for me now would come out to the equivalent of about $10 an hour!

I can see how folks who have their own accounts could make the type of income range above, but working for a service?  What is it that the rest of you now that obviously I'm totally missing???

I am constantly looking for new ways to cut down keystrokes. I would say the most important thing I have learned is that, while some doctors repeat the same phrases over and over in exactly the same manner, most of them vary the phrases slightly. So, in addition to a shortcut for a specific phrase, I have shortcuts for the individual words. For example, some docs say "posterior horn of the medial meniscus" and some say "posterior horn medial meniscus". So I have "phmm" for the first phrase but I have "ph" for "posterior horn" and "mmen" for "medial meniscus" so I can type the second phrase without having to stop and remember, now HOW did I abbreviate that??

So, how about some more tips? Anyone?

I've just not had much luck with any service and the one I spoke about above was the worst.  That was early in my career and I felt like I was pretty close friends with the supervisor and then to be treated the way I was treated, really just hurt.  Ever since then, I've distanced myself in my work life.  Business is business.

I will say, though, that I am a loyal person.  If I'm treated fairly, I will give 110%.  I think that's what happening these days in the MT world.  MTs aren't getting treated very fair and there are just bad feelings everywhere.  You're constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop.  If a job offer is too good to be true, then it probable is too good to be true.  And now everyone is playing cover your behind and making sure contracts cover everything.  I just think MTs need to play hardball like the big companies.  If you are working as an IC, you should have a ready made contract for whatever service you contract with.  Why should you be the only one signing rights away?

I've also had the opportunity to read the contract between a big service and one of their hospital clients.  The line rate that this particular service charged was mind boggling.  I don't feel bad about stealing accounts away from services like that.

I was wondering if anyone has ever purchased DSL from an online company.  My phone company charges waaaaay toooo muuuuch.  I see commercials all the time for $9.95 and 14.95.  Is this for real?  Any info would be appreciated. 

I find myself, like when I'm reading a menu or magazine, newspaper, etc, always finding the grammer errors, punctuation errors, spelling errors, and it drives me--not to mention my DH--nuts! I guess it's out of habit, but I can't seem to turn the "editor" in me off!  I'm always, instead of enjoying the story or article, or whatever I'm reading, looking for errors or typo's.  Does anyone else ever do this? I guess I'm obsessive/compulsive.  Think I could get work comp for that?

Good day everybody...I am on a rush and interested on buying a set of classified voice files, all body system for practice transcription but I can not find sites where to buy them.  I will appreciate it a lot if somebody could give me at least an idea where to find the complete set of course on a cheaper price. I am referencing an old Ann Landers column which stuck in my head over the years. 

A guy writes in and states he is 40 years old and would like to go back to law school to finish it up but in 4 years' time, he will be 44.  

Ann Landers replies: "How old will you be in 4 years if you DON'T go back to law school?  You might as well be a lawyer, too!"

So, I say to you the same thing.  You may as well be a nurse in four years as well as four years older.  And you won't be stuck in MTville forever.

I found it in their Knowledge Base.

1. Go to the Settings window and select Control tab.


2. Click the ADd button under the "System Wide Hote Key Assignment" heading (at the bottom).


3. Now press the key conbimation that you will use for the command (e.g. Ctrl+G) and then select the "Copy Time" option from the dropdown list.


4. Click the OK.

When you need to add the time hit your new command (Ctrl+G) to copy the time from ES and then Ctrl+V to paste it in the desired location.

Am I supposed to be happy when a company only gives me 200 or 300 lines a day when they promise you a certain amount (that is higher than that)? How would the company employees (not us lowly transcriptionists) feel if the company told them that they were only getting paid 100 dollars this pay period, that there wasn't enough work. Not enough to pay bills and keep food on the table, just pin money.

self-proclamed freelance writer for a while low. I have quite a few topics I am working on, Christian-based, geared towards women.  I had to write a letter stating my credentials (I have a few, believe it or not), future topics, experience, etc.  I feel very positive about my letter. It took all day to write.

I just pray this pans out.  I eventually want to write a book. That's been a life-long dream. I love to write. I've avidly kept a journal for over 25 years, keep an on-line blog, read every day, and writing just comes naturally for me.  Also, I outlined my editing experience, so hopefully that will help!

I will let you know what they say! Keep your fingers crossed....I want to get out of the MT business so bad...It's been a blessing, but I would LOVE to get paid by doing what I love doing.....Sharing my shallow thoughts and life's secrets to other women through the use of story telling and faith-based philosophy!

Mine are grown, but the grandchildren occasionally are over.  The oldest one will play his Gameboy or some cube thing all day and only occasionally ask to be fed.  However, when the youngest one can't go do daycare for some reason my world is turned upside down.  The granddaughter has it in her head that when I ask her to be quiet it means come over to my desk and whisper.  All in all, it isn't too often that I have children in my house when I work.  My hat is off to those of you who do it on a regular basis, you are queens of organizational/concentration skills.
