From reading these posts, these QA people are scary....

I have been reading some posts about people using AutoCorrect and ESP...sm
I use my ESP constantly and couldn't live without it. I add several daily and have been doing so for years. Why would I use AutoCorrect also? I am wondering if I am missing out on some added benefit. Could someone explain please? Much appreciated!
Thank you too! I'ts obvious that people aren't reading
into the reason for my OP. I haven't even suggested this option to my son. He may very well say, "No way" or his favorite line lately, "Whaddevah."
If it works, it works, if it doesn't, whaddevah. . . .on to plan B.
I won't stop until he's happy. My original inquiry was not about opinions about homeschooling. Geesh.
I agree 100% especially with reading as one types (I do also) and if a company sm
constantly have no woek or constantly runs out of work. At least half of the MTs on MTstars need to follow this advice. This would stop the majority of the whining on this board.
The people you are working for
should help you with this? Was there a training period or anything. Poor communiation on the company's part if you do not have a good understanding of software they use.
Most of the people on here are working MTs. sm
sorry you were so gullible. You should have come here first.
Can point in a direction but takes reading, re-reading sm
Goggle.com and enter various phrases to get articles and companies. I use a free doanload of ExpressScribe, yep, it is free. They have a number of various software things on their site to read and perhaps one will fit. The express Scribe is a piece of sotware to download, it is very simple and I like simple. You can listen and transcribe various voice file formats. You can use a wav pedal one is called a serial pedall and I think it is 9 pin and plugs in the back of PC and also another pedal I think a 15 pin wav pedal and goes in the USB port in front. However, you can also use it without a pedal and it works fine. You use a couple of key to stop, pause, rewind, I forget the key. There are a lot of pedals so don't just jump in. On this site you may benefit from emailing the company after reading and rereading, even if you don't understand. .

People in USA are taking your job by working
x
Boy, do I hear ya on that one! People think I'm working less (sm)
and basking out by the pool every day. HAH! I've been putting in 11-hour days and having to call it "8" (much time wasted looking up doctors & experimental drugs). More interesting and challenging, but requires a lot more research & knowledge per page to complete. Co. wants topnotch MTs, but still I'm making less per line than at the in-house job. But I had to take this financial hit in order to get away from the hideous management style at the old job. I DO get to break up the day, but that has its pitfalls, as well, and can make for a long, long day.
So I guess we MTs get a choice (if you could call it that): Work in-house and be browbeated & treated like the scum of the earth daily, or work at home and be considered invisible & non-human.
Working at home, do you ever have people telling you
You need to get out more, or why did you pick such an isolating job? This is something that always bugs me, because the reason why I was drawn to medical transcription, is because I love working independently and have never been one to participate in office politics. It seemed no matter how hard you tried, someone in the office wasn't going to be happy with you. So i'm delighted beyond belief to be working in the comfort of my own home. I don't deal with traffic or road rage on a daily basis, don't have to dress up or be 'on' for people every day, so it would seem that would take stress off the average person? Yet when I tell people my profession, I get this horrified look from them, "thats not very social" or "don't you go crazy working alone?" and also my family has been telling me for years I "need" to get out and be around people etc. I go to school, volunteer, and also am part of a club, yet I get this on a regular basis. I feel so defensive, I want to scream sometimes. Anyone else deal with this???
free pc to people who have no intention of working as MT
Read the post a little more carefully next time, duh.
You know who I see working at Walmart? People who may not be employed elsewhere.
Old people, under-educated people, etc. I doubt those workers were ever paid better elsewhere and they seem quite content with Walmart who gives them the dignity of a job. I know one lady in particular who seemed a little "off" and she was so happy to participate in retirement plan. My son worked at Walmart as a temporary pharmacy tech and also liked the 401K offered to even the lowest part time employee. I think Walmart is good for the poor and unfortunate people of the world and I know I have not walked away from Walmart thinking I had been cheated or people who worked there were unhappy. Same with Sam's Club.
Sorry for the open your mind. I actually did not mean that as an insult either. It's just that some people are so angry they refuse to listen to new ideas and the other side of the story.
I am sorry for the small business man but I am just as sorry for the MT whose job is going to be obsolete in the near future. The times are changing and we need to face it and deal with it. It is what it is.
Maybe people working for private firms but I would be willing
to say the going rate for independents is around 8 for straight. I would think the ones here showing the 12 or more per line probably not working for a national. I am only part time and make enough to satisfy my needs.

I agree, some people will never get it but, then again, what does it say about them as people? Not

I agree... working from home is almost a crutch

I agree...thank God for people like you..sm
if there is anything I can do to help, email me and I will be glad to contribute, or whatever else is needed. contact Time Warner Cable and see if they will provide a website. I wish you, and the little one of course, all the best.
I do agree, we need QA people, if for no other - sm
reason than sometimes no matter how carefully you proofread, sometimes little mistakes & typos can still slip past, and another set of eyes can catch it before it gets sent out. And of course they're invaluable for newbies, as well. I just wish they didn't have to nitpick about some things. What really irks me is when a word can be spelled more than one way. It never fails that no matter which way I spell it, it gets 'corrected', even though it's already correct. I get really tempted to just type it with a slash in-between:
' xxxxx/xxxxx ' and let them hash it out at their end.
We're also supposed to put a blank and flag it if we're not sure about a word, rather than guess. (Again, the advantage of more than one pair of eyes & ears!) Yet would you believe I have one in particular that gets ticked-off when I flag something? It's like she' rather just sit there and pick her nose and not edit anything at all. Wouldn't that eventually equate to NO JOB? I really don't get it.
Anyway, as you can tell, today I've kinda' HAD it (although putting all those little animated cartoons in my original post DID make me smile & feel better!), and I'm *boycotting* QA. Just gonna' send 'em on through with blanks, and not to QA first for a final going-over. Sometimes I get beyond caring.......
Agree, unfortunately, people are
spreading rumors that this is an offshore site now, and it isn't. There is still no offshore posting of any kind allowed.
I completely agree. Working alone is so much better than dealing with all that stuff.

I agree...working at home with children is possible just very hard...
I have a 9-year-old and an 18-month-old and I wake up early in the morning before the kids wake up and work and then work some more during my daughter's nap...there are days I want to pull my hair out but my children don't suffer and neither does my job...thank goodness my company is flexible otherwise I couldn't do it...
I agree-the nerve of some people
I agree also. It is amazing to me that people
say they make $7500 a month or whatever, yet when the conversation turns to the commercial about making $75k a year with baby in lap, everyone balks. It is just not possible. You would have to be making 20 cpgl with extra spaces included-LOL!! I do not believe either. Now if someone said 1300 a month, that I would believe, because that is the truth!!
I agree, people will assume because it's been
just like everything else...you have to look at the fine print. Even cigarettes, which will kill you...only tell you that in teeny little print. Every commercial for some gimmick to lose weight only tells you it really doesn't work way down in teen, tiny print.
AGree, I think that's what people are upset about
but...I don't think people are really looking into it and realizing that it was built out of US and maintained out of US pretty much the whole time...that info just didn't come out until recently. There was a discussion on MTchat yesterday that this site was transferred legally way back when the statement said it was. We may never know what really happened, but it is fairly easy to figure out that their initial statements (previous owners) were not exactly on the up and up.
I agree because I have heard this from many people - sm
Husband as the doctor and wife as the office manager is often a recipe for disaster. I have seen it work a time or two, but more often than not they have this arrangement to save a few bucks and the wife has NO idea about office management, but guess what? Hubby/doc is too busy seeing patients and she runs the show, with often disastrous results. I say run while you can...PLENTY of places looking for qualified medical help with fewer hassles too most likely.
Have to agree. Kids do make working at home "different" (sm)
Mine are grown, but the grandchildren occasionally are over. The oldest one will play his Gameboy or some cube thing all day and only occasionally ask to be fed. However, when the youngest one can't go do daycare for some reason my world is turned upside down. The granddaughter has it in her head that when I ask her to be quiet it means come over to my desk and whisper. All in all, it isn't too often that I have children in my house when I work. My hat is off to those of you who do it on a regular basis, you are queens of organizational/concentration skills.
I agree.. I would be working from home even if I didn't have anxiety attacks!
Thanks for sharing!
I agree with this; hence, my query about how folks who say that they're working for SERVICES ...
are making this kind of money.

agree with Patti and can't believe how many people freak over having IC status...sm
just over the taxes. I mean, we're all grown ups here right? Get over it.
I totally agree...how old are we to call other people stupid???
Give me a break...we do not go to school for countless number of years and just because we have to correct a doctor's spelling on certain things, doesn't mean we are smarter than they are...give me a break...if you were expecting to making 75,000 in this field you made the wrong career decision...how about a little bit of respect for a fellow MT...
I totally agree. Them not paying is NOT hearsay. It is fact so why let them scam hard-working MTs.
SAY NO.. to their advertising. What a scam they have going.
You are right Amanda (sm)
It can be very difficult to work at home with children. I hear this a.m. "all you do is work, work, work, Mom". But, when we are doing other activities such as swimming at the community pool all afternoon in the summertime, I don't hear her say "All we do is swim, swim, swim, Mom". Kids will be kids. When you are working, you feel you should dedicate your time to your children. When you are dedicating your time to your children, you feel you should be working. I am fortunate in that I have chosen positions where I do not have to sit in front of the PC all day to meet a line count. In my personal opinion, that would make me crazy. I like the flexibility. However, working on-site, you must still have to ask to leave if you child is sick or you need time off, so... lesser of two evils?
I must be the 3rd Amanda
I haven't responded to this thread and there are already 2 Amandas?!
Amanda,
I could have written that post myself today and I have been doing this for 23 years!!! There are some days I can produce a lot and other days where I STILL have to look everything up. What specialty are you in? Some are a lot more difficult than others. Maybe finding the right specialty for you is the key. It does take a long time to get all that information in your head. Some terminology is easy because you hear it every day. Other terminology is more difficult because it is seldom used. Stick to it. My kids grew up with me doing this at home and they still say they loved having me here when their friends' mothers had to go to an office.
Thanks Amanda
Amanda, thank you for your kind words. I would type on my head if that is what my client told me to do. I have been on this account from the beginning, and I have not heard from QA in probably 2 years. Like I posted before, we have always been instructed to type "the patient." This is highlighted in my account instructions. Jane Doe was just a random name I used here, thought that would just be understood. There were other things wrong, but I really do not feel it is worth going into here to just be told what a crappy MT I am. I have addressed my issues with QA but have yet to hear back from them.
Are you the same Amanda?
Are you the same Amanda MT who types over 400 lines per hour?
Hi, Amanda
Ok, Amanda, I am sorry, but the last 2 years something is really wrong with this profession, outscourcing, ASR, EMR, etc....
? for Amanda
Thanks for a possible ray of hope during a frustrating time for MTs these days. There is definitely no harm in trying. I was just wondering during your experiment how much time you would spend on looking up for defi''s and such. Some times between looking in my reference bks and googling for an med, etc. 10 minutes can easily fly by. Whats your take on that.
Amanda......
Again, sorry, I feel with you,
My point is:
Can we keep up with all those changes, pushing ourselves harder and harder. It is so sad seeing so qualified and excellent MTs having to give up a job in which they are so efficient, having to resort to little tricks to compete with the new technology.
MTs who have been in this business for 20-30 years taking tests and being rejected. I read this on this board. So sad.
That's what I mean.
Thanks to Amanda
Thank you Amanda for posting this. I, too, have found this to be true. It is one of the traps of working at home. I forget that I am still supposed to be working and get distracted by the things going on around me. then I would wonder why I wasn't earning as much. simple answer: I wasn't working as much. Once I eliminated all the extraneous activities I did during my "work" hours, my income rebounded. Those posters who are criticizing you here are the ones who think they are entitled to do personal things on "company" time.
From the other post I quote
"No talking, no emails, no telephone, no nothing? When do you eat and pee?
Don't you have a husband or children, who want to interact with you? What's the advantage of working at home, if you work like this? This is a 'sweatshop', what a life! No, thanks"
Okay, I would like to understand this. Is this person working or not. If you are working, then work. If you are talking, emailing, eating, interacting with your husband and children, then don't expect to be earning much! Those are choices you are entitled to make but you are also responsible for the consequences. We would all like to get a check every week for spending time with our families and friends but it isn't going to happen.
For me, the advantages of working from home are many and include the fact that I don't have to drive anywhere. I don't need a wardrobe. I don't get caught up in the office politics. I don't have to eat the donuts every Friday morning!!! I set my own hours. And many, many others.
Again, Amanda, your post is a breath of fresh air on this predominantly negative board. I am glad I still like my wok!!!
Thank you, Amanda
I applaud this sentence in your comment:
' I am going to college to get into another profession and be done with all of this.'
And for THIS I say 'Thank you, Amanda!' . For being so courageous and honest.

I was just thinking of doing this same thing myself but have forgotten to pick up a timer. I just added it to my grocery list. I get distracted a lot too and end up not being as productive as I could be. I've complained alot about this job but taking a step back I have realized I am not working smart because I have been mad because I'm not making the amount per line I was making 10 years ago. I like working at home, I like taking off when I feel like it or going on vacation for 2 weeks at a time without someone telling me I can't so I'm going to try to make the best of it. Thanks again.
Amanda
I appreciate your challenge!!!!! I think you were very kind to post this and I personally am taking it to heart. You did nothing in malice at all. You just posted a challenge and a suggestion. I am not a new MT. I have been transcribing for 20 years. The first 5 years in acute care, then 14 years of psychiatric/psychology, and now another year of acute care. The change from psych back to acute care you can imagine has been challenging. I am doing whatever I can to get my production up. I had never used Expanders other than my autocorrect. I am now doing this and it has helped tremendously, and in that frame of mind, I accept "your excellent challenge" as you so kindly suggested. I find myself being distracted a lot, and I am sure when I take this challenge I will see this.
I love being an at-home transcriptionist. This profession has been wonderful to me and my family. I raised two children being an at-home Transcriptionist and never took time away from them in doing so. I would get up and work an hour before I had to get them up and ready for school, get them up and off, and then work while they were in school, throwing in a load of laundry here and there "on my breaks", etc. When they got home from school I was done and spent time with them. In the summer, I changed shifts and worked nights while they slept. You tell me what other profession gives you that type of flexibility. None!
Yes, things have changed for us as MTs, but as a working mother and wife, I find that it is still the best. This being said, I also just plain love it. I find it challenging, mind-stimulating, and I am always challenging myself to do better, which to me makes it a FUN profession as well.
Again, Amanda thank you for your post. I am one MT who is going to take this challenge to see where I can IMPROVE myself. We will never arrive to our potential if we do not challenge ourselves. The challenge is on!!! THANKS!
