I agree check with your facility. Enlarging the font size can cause problems once a report uploads

I wrote a macro that would take the font size back down to 100% once I was finished and ready to sign off. I think I assigned to something like CNTRL+ALT+F and I got into a habit of doing that before hitting whatever function keys to spell check and sign off. It worked great.

It depends on font size, line length, margin size, etc.
There are too many variables.

Ask what font, font size and margins are
Then you can figure out how many characters would be in a complete line of text. I am not sure if I am explaining this very well. :-( I worked for one place that had a small font size and small margins. So it did not work out for me as each line averaged closer to 70 characters, and there were not many lines that had only one or two words on them because of the set up.

When paid by cpl, does it affect your line count if you type in a size 10 or size 12 font?
Font size
I have an account and they did not indicate a font size - I know that it makes a big difference the more that you have bolded in a report - what would be a reasonable font size or the standard font size to use?
Font size
I have read with interest the thread on font size. Now I know why one company allows you to transcribe in one font and then it gets printed in another - which is much smaller - which does make it harder to get your lines. I thought that it was me - but could not understand until I saw what was getting printed and counted, as to why it was so difficult to get a good line count when I had always done so in the past. Is this not in some way misrepresentation? You see what looks like a nice report and then when it gets printed it is so small that you can hardly read it - this also messes with the end of your lines and sentences - where if you make a hard page break on what is on your computer screen it comes up as something different on the copied version on the other side. All of the info offered was good and this is a good point to make when looking at work - especially if you are new and do not know anything different.

If you are counting by dividing characters by 65 characters, no matter what font you use it will be the same. However if you count by gross line -- line charge no matter how many words on a line you will lose money. But if it is by by every 65 characgers (including spaces) you could use an 8, 9 or 12 font and the charge will all be the same.

Every place I've ever worked or worked for has a default font. You can have text on your screen set at newspaper headline size (like my MT friend who has macular degeneration) and it'll usually default to their 11- or 12-pt font. I'm sure every hospital or MTSO's software specs are different, though.

I think you just go under view and change the text size to whatever you want it to be.
what is your font size set at??
The zoom feature will not affect the size of the printing font, but the font size will. Make sure it is at least 12.

When I highlight the text it is in the font size I want, but when I insert the autotext it makes the font smaller.
Sorry. Got cut off. Nothing I do can increase the font size.

Font size! I never knew.
What an eye opener. I did not realize this was happening. Thanks for the info to all who submitted to the font thread.
The font is the size of the type, has nothing
to do with the character line count.
Autotext - font size
Hmm, I don't know. Let me play around with it, and I will get back with you. I have never had that problem. When you highlight your text, is it in the font you are wanting, or is it changing from that to a smaller font? Strange.
Brower font size
I'm drawing a blank and cannot remember how to change the size of print within Internet sites. Can anyone help with this? Thanks
HIPAA laws have nothing to do with font size.
Some in your office don't have a clue, evidently.
A summary of the HIPAA law is posted at the HHS website.
http://www.cms.hhs.gov/HIPAAGenInfo/02_TheHIPAALawandMore.asp#TopOfPage
Or you can go to HIPAA.org.
You have to be working in the default font and size of the
document template to keep autotext from changing. IOW, when you open a document and change the font or size before you start typing, you are not working in the default of the template the document is based on.
The font size could stand to be a tad bigger here for us w/old eyes! Thx. nm

Does anyone have to use size 10 font? Does it take you longer to make your lines? nm
s
Definitely a common font size. Ask if increasing the zoom on your end

Do y'all think the size of the font matters in line counts?
If your font is smaller takes more characters to make a line? I just wondered this today.
Increasing the zoom view does not increase the font size.

Gross line was 7, not 8. Depending on font size and margins
7 cpl is about 8.5 cpl.
I have IE set to display text size as largest, yet this font is so tiny I can barely see it.

I've been seeing a lot on this board about fonts and font size affecting line counts and I was...
wondering how this is possible? I mean if your lines are based on a 65 character line then what difference does the font type or size make? I mean, a character is a character whether it's type in Arial, Times New Roman, or Courier.
I use MP Count to count my lines and I decided to do a little test. I typed a document and saved in Arial 10 and 12 font type and size, Times New Roman 10 and 12 font type and size, and Courier 10 and 12 font type and size. And then I ran a line report on each individual document counting lines by 65 characters per line strict (no spaces) and came up with 24 lines each time in each font type and size.
There was an MT below who was saying she types in Arial for her client, but bills them for Courier like it made a difference in the lines. Maybe I'm missing something, but I just don't see how it makes any difference at all.
This is how we let facility know they need to check

Check consumer reports ratings on the size SUV you want. I went with Subaru Forester..but sm
Its just me..no kids to haul around. The Ford Escape is in your range..but check the repair record. They were brand new the year I was looking..take into consideration tires..Escape uses truck tires which are more expensive than car tires. Have fun shopping!!
I agree - font has nothing to do with line count
I just changed font as well down to 11 font because they only have a typewriter and want to make corrections on reports I have printed and they do not have access to the reports (old doctor), but anyway, there is no change in line count. It just makes the font smaller.
Does anybody have program to dle-ck MQ lines? I would like to check every report
to see if all my work is being counted on a 65-character line, including spaces EVERY TIME - or are there occasional reports through the day/times during the day that the lines actually go longer than 65 characters.
At this point I would like to take the time to verify each and every report. Sometimes it just feels like a report should have had more lines - or that a report goes on over to page 3 and you know it should have more lines and it is not much lines and you are on such a time crunch you don't what to go and count (of course because the report IS long).
So, is there a program out there that I could use as a double check to verify they aren't turning the knob at certain times during the day to make the lines be i.e. 90 lines or so? I hope I have explained this good enough.
Thanks if anybody knows of one.
It's not personal, it's business. (I always like that line from "You've Got Mail")
You can go back and check the report if you know your job number.
Do F5 choose detail report type, put in dates you want to search and press run report, then click on the job number you want and under job view choose user output. This is the way it looks when it goes to the client. Hope this helps.
That is okay. Yes I do work for a service. The doctor uploads directly to me and he is pretty reg

I agree with you. What in the world would one want to do with a report, that would require screenin
work-at-home job. Medical reports are sensitive information and valuable to WHO? I mean I give more sensitive information to credit card companies and IRS who are obviously outsourcing offshore. If someone transcribed a report about my migraines, what in the world do I have to fear regarding sensitive medical records. Every insurance company has access to my medical records. I don't get this big deal about investigating who is typing at home for 4-9 cents per line in their pajamas to ensure they don't do what with my medical info? Sell it to a tabloid? Blackmail me?
I agree. Eyes are always scanning, but never review enitre report.

Agree to credit check.
I have seen several applications where you had to agree to a credit check.
I agree -- check, cheque, chex, etc. -- who cares as long as you can cash it? :-) sm
It is rather disappointing to see a bunch of professionals bickering over such a trivial issue.
You do not need the 1099. You just need to report the income. Report the company/person ...sm
to the IRS for not sending out the 1099.
Agree it's the dictator's report and the dictator's call. NM

I charge the same amount for a "normal" report as for any other report.
You still have to listen to the dictation and change anything that's different. I had one woman try to pull this on me. She'd dictate, "Just pull up my normal, but change this, change that, switch that around, move that, add this, delete that, and change the other." Then she'd only want to pay me what equated to $.03 per line. She wanted 1:1 on her dictation to transcription ratios. I told her to take her cheap account down the road because I'm worth more than that.
I am an MT at the facility where the
report came in. This dictator is not our best, but he's not our worst, either. I also transcribe his dictation. MQ does our overflow and has for YEARS! This is not an ESL dictator, and this physician has been at our hospital for years. I know nobody is perfect. All I'm saying is, I would never send a report through with that many blanks without someone checking first. I also know that yesterday one came through from MQ with more than 14 blanks, and it was from one of our easiest dictators! It doesn't matter whether you are management or an MT in the trenches (as am I). You should take pride in your work and care what the finished product looks like. If you have done your absolute best, then okay. If not, then there's a problem. With multiple reports coming through like this every day, it makes us wonder if all whoever types these cares about is getting the lines and doesn't care about the work they do.
Maybe work like this is why things aren't going so well at MQ, at least according to what I read on these boards. And for the record, I worked for MQ for a short period of time as an IC about 6 years ago but chose to go to work in-house for this facility for benefits.
I have been transcribing for 19 years, and I have had my share of difficult dictators, ESL, bathroom talkers, dictating in cars, airplanes, screaming children, fighting spouses, gum chewing, burping, and hearing other bodily functions, along with transcribing while parties, code blues, superbowl games, etc. are going on in the background. I know about crappy dictation and good dictation. I struggle through the bad and rejoice in the good.
The patients deserve the best. Our best! Yes, the ultimate responsibility should be the physicians, but isn't it our job to create the best possible report with what we have to work with? Medical Transcription is not a perfect world. There are no perfect dictators, but I do know a couple that come awfully close! In a perfect world there would be no sickness and we wouldn't be needed!
It's time for us to quit complaining about the dictation and do our absolute best with what we have. We owe the patient that much.
It is up to the facility not the MT (eom)
m
Whatever the facility wants is what you should do.

No facility should be given permission (sm)
for any kind of physical discipline. Its not a spare the rod spoil the child issue. When having to discipline someone elses child, the results could be far less or far more than what the parents would have inflicted. The result in some cases, especially in Texas, is the accidental deaths of children. I spank my children, on the behind but as a LAST result. THerefore, I would not allow my children to go to a school or facility, camp, counseling, etc, that would attempt to discipline my child physically. Call me and I will come and take care of it, but don't put yourself in the parents position.
incompetent facility
Your story sounds like something from a small town (or small office). That many radiology reports withheld from being distributed, you know some of them had remarkable findings such as a chest x-ray that needed a follow-up MRI, CT scan, etc. I hope this girl gets terminated soon enough and out of there. Otherwise, the radiologists themselves will be paying the price and hence it would be followed through to the administrative office/CEO office of the medical center/hospital.
No, I know not every facility/provider is
compliant, but two wrongs don't make a right. I want to keep my nose clean if the facility/provider is ever charged and investigated for a HIPAA violation - if the gov't has done so thus far. You think the gov't will buy 'oh, I was non-compliant because my client signed my checks'?...nope!
It is still up to the facility to make that
determination, not the individual MT. We only do what we are told to do.
Wow, this must be directly for a facility. Sm msg
Very hard to imagine an MTSO paying that type of money, although it is well worth every penny! Good luck! Grab it quick!
