sometimes at the federal level.  This mandatory credentialing is ludicrous and a scheme to make money, in my humble opinion.

I have to agree with the other poster, if not having CMT after my name after 25 years of experience prevents me from being employable, I have a very good lawyer who will take up my cause!!!

Lori is correct...the SS does give the recipients a yearly raise. This year the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) was 3.3%. This sounds fine and dandy until you take inconsideration the monthly premium for Medicare was raised by 3.1%.

I agree with you completely. It is our government that ALLOWS this
to happen though. My point exactly. Spend money overhauling the system. Make people accoutable for their actions. That opens up money for people who really need it. Also, people here that do not pay taxes and are not here legally, give them the boot.

Does anyone know how to go about applying for a government job?

What I expect from my government
When a mandatory evacuation is ordered I expect to be able to get on the hurricane evacuation routes and have enough gas available to get moving. Is this reality........NO.

As far as moving somewhere else, FL has a way of putting a grip on you. Low wages to the point you are stuck literally. I haven't been out of this state in over 7 years due to lack of funds.

Government jobs...

MTs are listed under "medical data technician."  Also, the military sometimes uses placement agencies for MT jobs.

Government contracts

Has anyone out there heard or looked into government contracts transcribing for VA hospitals - a friend called me today with this proposition - she said there were two places to look for work - one is called rsp.com and the other is fedbizops.com.  She put in a bid for a radiology account with 600,000 lines a month and said that she thought that would take two people.  I'm just trying to find out if this is legit or not.  I'm not wanting any extra work for myself, but this just sounds too good to be true.

Government disability and doing MT
Does anyone here collect government disability and also work part time doing MT?  I have a severe immune disorder and was considering filing for permanent disability. Anyone know if you are allowed to work part time?
Including, unfortunately, our government. nm

What we CAN do is vote for changes in our government
And then we have to keep a very, very close eye on them and scrutinize every move they make. We have to become more knowledgeable and involved in how our political & judicial systems work.

And the more people want from the government -- the more you pay
Someone has to pay for all the government programs and it is us.  Just like that $600 we will get, who do you think will be paying for it -- us working people.   Those with the tax credits, child credits that pay no taxes just want more.  We the people support the government and the more the government gives the more we keep giving the government.   I use all my deductions I can give.  If I think I am paying too much to government, I find another dedution, my self retirement, my anything other than the government.

Some government drone is going to have a heyday

going through my computer (not!).

While I certainly don't support Google doing this (if, indeed, they are), it's kinda like the Patriot Act. If people have something to hide, they are going to fight this tooth and nail. If they don't have anything to hide, well, so what? If some poor government drone wants to see the dress measurements of every kid in my dance classes--enjoy! Want a list of what I want to see in Kauai--have at it!

Call me naive, call me stupid, but if surveillance of what I do means that people who ARE doing bad things are caught and kept from negatively influencing your loved ones (not to mention mine), I'm all for it. I would suspect that said drones would be targeting very specific ISPs, if this is all true, rather than wanting to see what the secret ingredient is in your great aunt Sally's family-favorite beef stew recipe.

So, with that said, I am going to continue to enjoy Google's presence on my desktop.

All you fans of the government must be from one o' them RED states..........
If you have such a productive life, why do you even care about MT, let alone spend time posting on an MT forum?
Those were put in place by the government for people who NEED them
You disgust me. You're part of what's wrong with society today, my dear.

Take a good look in the mirror - Yep, the epitome of what's wrong with many people who do not NEED those programs but scheme and manipulate and wheedle their way into being 'entitled' to them.

Your post seriously sickens me, as does you having a child you obviously cannot afford to raise.

Yes, PLEASE quit the MT field. I don't want my profession associated with system-sucking swindlers.
Government controlled healthcare!!

why doesn't the us let the aruban government come in and search for the
murders in the idaho case? how about why not the aruban government decide if the sexual predators that our legal system lets out decide whether they should be left to go out and kill some other child or left in prison. why did it take so long to arrest scott peterson. why didn't we let the aruban government come in and arrest him immediately and question him.

NOW for the undereducated, a team of US people from Texas are in Aruba searching for Natalee and FBI has had advisors on board in Aruba.
Another thing, people expect the government
to pick up the pieces for them, and everyone is concerned about this. Do people not care that we are paying for people who should not be here in the first place. I am paying for free school, health care, welfare for the Hispanic family, who are very nice, next door to me. All are illegal. They bought their house with cash. They have 4 cars. Their kid goes to free preschool because he is automatically in because he speaks Spanish. I take my daughter 30 minutes out to a high school because I cannot afford anything else. How is this fair? Why are more people not standing up and saying this is not right. We pay the money, we SHOULD be entitled to help, whether you or anyone else thinks they deserve it or not, whether that girl had a baby out of wedlock. It is not as big an issue as the billions of people we are supporting that are not putting a dime back into the system. What is people's problem? I am all for people who come here legally, go to work and contribute back to society. At least the ones having babies out of wedlock are at some point paying taxes and/or their family is.

Government retirement program has changed.
It is now the same as Medicare, with a 401K added.
Civil Service/Government MT Jobs?

Hi all, I am wondering if any of us work as an MT for any government agencies, V.A. hospitals,  military bases, etc.  And if so, how is the pay rate.  Is the hiring process difficulty.  THANKS!

I am going broke, looking for a more lucrative 2008.

Am I willing to accept the US government outsources my tax return? Are you nutz?

What the bleep do you expect US citizens to do?  Overthrow the government?  It's the friggin LAW the politicians made.

Lost job due to offshore? Government program assistance
found this information in my husband's COBRA package. He is in the machining industry which has lost a lot of work to China. This program will help support during retraining and give a tax credit for health insurance premiums. Worth checking out. Don't be put off by how "complicated" the form is. Just do it one step at a time and call some of the numbers for help if need be.
Running a government women's health program has nothing to do with
The ability to make assessments WITH verbal input (women DO have the ability to communicate) is VERY necessary.

Maybe the former head of FEMA was a vet too. That would explain a lot.
Hate to disappoint you but the government doesn't care about you.

Where do people get the idea that our government wants to know what is on your computer or who you talk to on the phone.  That is soooo stupid.  READ, study, investigate it for yourself...not someone elses interpretation.( Patriot Act).  It is NOT used for tracking US individuals willy nilly.  It is specifically geared toward foreign suspects involving only very specific US contacts/colleagues/persons of interest.

It was started under Clinton and Bush has taken it one step further by daily reports to the cabinet!!!!  Nothing more nothing less.  Take a trip through our recent history and find the truth yourself instead of becoming part of the media system in spreading untruths and hysterics.  It is not new ....only more open.

You're supposed to go back to school because of this government???
Maybe you should go back to school because you have higher expectations for yourself instead of blaming the government for the result of your own life choices.

Try assuming some responsibility and try making your life better on your own without blaming someone else.

Such a defeated attitude! Is that the government's fault too?

The government isn't Santa Claus. No one is responsible for our success but ourselves.

Grow up.
It's called redistribution of wealth, government produces nothing, sm
it takes from producers and redistributes it, 65% of the federal budget is for entitlement programs.
Puhleez, what exactly is the government doing about illegals crossing the border?

Absolutely nothing.  NOTHING!  The government sanctions sending American jobs oversees, puting thousands of American workers on unemployment!  So why should I or anyone else feel guilty about trying to get what we rightfully deserve?

As far as testing on the phone goes, doxie, you can be listening on an extension and write the answers down for your husband.  Don't feel guilty.  You're going to pay your taxes.

Or in the case of our government, a million wrongs don't make it right, but ...

doesn't stop Uncle Sam from wronging us on a daily basis.  Look, the bottom line is I will do what I have to do to feed, clothe, and house my kids.  I don't feel guilty about finding shortcuts around the enormous mountains the government puts in my way nor should Doxie.  She's trying to take care of her grandkids so her kids can go to the middle east and serve their country and us all.  A woman's gotta do what a woman's gotta do.

You can call me a thief.  My conscience is clear.  My kids are healthy, well-fed, and have a home.  I give to charity, tithe to my church, and volunteer at the food pantry in my town.  I give back when I can -- not to the government, but to my community!

I am not the only person in American who stives to pay as little taxes to the government as I can.  The government cheats us all.  Do two wrongs make a right?  I'm not trying to make a right, I'm just trying to survive.

I would not be holding press conferences criticizing the government I want to help me find my
daughter nor offending the citizens of the country I wanted to support me.  She has clearly lost her mind and needs a spokesperson and she should vent to her husband not the world, although her vents and concerns are unfounded according to their attorney and the prosecuters.  They did not have EVIDENCE to keep these brothers.  No EVIDENCE.  What part of this doesn't Mrs. Twitty get.
EMR is part of a big government push for decreasing errors in healthcare..sm

the newer generation of doctors is very comfortable with point and click. They do their banking by internet, etc. As the older docs retire, there will be less and less actual dictation. Some fields don't transfer readily to EMR, for example, the ER doesn't like it because you "can't tell the story" with a point and click.  Another big advantage of the EMR is you can search the data. When Celebrex and other Cox-2 inihibitors were pulled off the market, all the EMR docs had to do was search the records for a match and they could then call all patients on these drugs to get them in and explain what was going on. They also will check for drug reactions within prescriptions, etc. That's why the government is pushing for EMR. Not to mention it will help build that insurance data base...I'm sure their lobbyists are pushing hard for that too.

If government is involved, it will be as screwed up as the Medicare medication program.
Heaven save us from all these wanna be kings that sit on top of the hill.

They are required to be licensed by the state. MTIA is a private sm
organization and has no standing of any kind with the govt. If they want to press for credentialing by a government organization, and not themselves, to fill their pockets, I am all for it. They are NOTHING.
oh our lovely government does give illegals medicaid, foodstamps, and housing so in term we give tha
i have been through some rough times lately and had to apply for some help. there are signs, big signs, all over our offices saying "YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE LEGAL TO GET HELP". so we and our government do give them our benefits whether they are legal here or not. now that is messed up. i am helping to support them so they can take away my jobs and i can't even support my kids and yes i get benefits, wow $75 a month in food stamps which lasts not even a week in a household of 6. don't get me wrong, i am thankful for any help at the moment, but i get penalized for trying to work my tail off and still can't survive.

there was recently an article in our local newspaper where one of our local school districts tried to charge $1000 a year for each illegal student enrolled. it was bulked and the illegals got a lawyer to sue for discrimination. the school district merely stated that they had to HIRE extra teachers that could speak the foreign language just to teach these children and were trying to offset some of the expenses. ridicilous!! so again our taxpayers money is paying to educate illegals as well.
Agree..and state this is the final chance

Who is/are MTIA?
I never even heard of this organization before. It was always AAMT which is now AHDI. Has MTIA been around long and how did I miss them? Been an MT for 30 years!
Can anyone tell me anything about them and are they actually a significant voice in the MT workforce?
MTIA
MTIA = Medical Transcription Industry Association.   The MTSOs belong to this and AHDI is partnered with it.
check out MTIA.com
seems to be a website for MTSOs, not MTs - may have some info you are looking for
MTIA **is** AHDI
see "driving directions" in post below.
Re: AHDI / MTIA address -- (sm)

I read the posts below about AHDI & MTIA having the same address.  So I looked each of them up online and YES, it's true.  Right down to the suite number.  Obvioiusly these "two" companies are one and the same.  AHDI probably fabricated the newer MTIA to "recommend" a CMT "title" for all MTs in order to up it's dwindling U.S. membership.   And since it would be obvious to all if AHDI "recommended" its own certification title, they came up with this bogus "other company" to do the recommending, since it's doubtful that any hospitals/MTSO's/Indian MT companies, etc. would bother to scrutinize the addresses of the two.

It's especially sad for me, a Californian, to see that these are Modesto, California "companies".   Not long ago there was a bill in California to ban offshoring of American medical records, and it was voted down by "Ah-nold".  (The "Governator" of California.)   Hmmm.  How much do ya wanna bet there was quite a bit of lobbying from AHDI/MTIA, and a large bit of cash moving about under the table?

Credentialing

Has anyone really reeped the benefits of being credentialed?  I have been fortunate enough to work on site in psychiatry and never NEEDED to be credentialed.  I am looking at getting a raise and thought maybe that would help.  However; you have to pay money to be a member with the people who require more money to take their test and buy their books.  I am not sure it is worth it.

Comments...anyone...

Credentialing
No way Jose. This is nothing more than a money making gimmick. I've been doing this 16 years and have done just fine without. When the BIG nationals start contributing money to this organization, you'd better believe it's not in the MT's best interest and that is exactly what has happened. We've been sold out to the highest bidder.
Why go through credentialing
when it supposedly is all going VR by 2010 or something like that?  Why pay the money?  I do believe credentialing is a way for that AHDI to make money.  There was another thread where the CMT makes 6K, but she's gotta pay for her credits she needs to stay a CMT and do the work of sitting listening to the webinars, which when I looked were neither cheap nor short.  Maybe I'm crazy, but there would need to be credentialing for a certain realm of the specialties as well.  I do not like acute care.  Sure, I can do it after 20 years in this business and working at a hospital, but I have no desire to work on acute care, so shouldn't I then have a choice in the matter to be credentialed for clinic work?  I'm not an expert on this credentialing but I also just got a response from a nameless recruiter who expected me to take an extensive test because he/she claims that the ones that have been in this business a long time are not the best MTs out there and cannot pass his/her test.  So who is the bully here?  The pay was probably going to be horrible anyway, so why bother?  I just told her/him good luck in their search.  I'm tired of taking lengthy tests; my resume shows what I've done, am doing, and if these companies don't like it then pass me by, but by darned don't come off as greater than thou and degrade a hardworking MT just looking to contract a little bit of work.  They can keep it for all I care with that kind of attitude.
RE: Credentialing
I've seen several online news ads for my area - Washington Post, Baltimore Sun (which uses careerbuilder.com) - for on-site positions which state "CMT preferred" (especially for editing jobs).  I've seen plenty of online ads for nationals that offer higher pay with CMT status.  If you plan on staying in the field, then at some point having the cert. could mean the difference between you and another candidate for a position or higher pay.  Since certification is not necessary in our field, pursuing it is a personal choice.  Weighing the time and money costs of certifying versus potential future benefit, it can't hurt to have it IMO.
Credentialing
The nail techs and beauticians that we all go to are REQUIRED to be licensed and REQUIRED to attend continuing education on a 3-year cycle. Why shouldn't those who handle confidential medical information be subject to some form of regulation. We are not just typists, we are professionals at what we do!
MTIA...we want you certified, or you won't work. That's what it boils down to.

Mandatory credentialing
Yes ADHI (AAMT) is working towards mandatory credentialing.  Anyone who sees that as a threat or joke,  probably should not be working as a transcriptionist.  Believe me the more education and professional development you gain- you will reap rewards.  They may or may not be monetary or happen overnight.  Sometimes it is more about professional development.
Don't be under the assumption that credentialing
means the Transcriptionist is "better" in some way. As far as pay, I have NEVER, EVER seen a substantial difference in pay rates or an employer who will only hire credentialed. Don't get me wrong, credentialing is a good idea as it lends professionalism to our field but unless we are united, get credentialed and then demand better pay for the expense and education of being credentialed, what's the point?
