trains, in cars, everywhere and they cut out and they just have an exceptional amount of residents dictating on anything imaginable. My blanks are never for words I dont know they are for crappy dictators or those that simply dont know what they are talking about.

cell phones
I was just at the hospital Friday evening attending a death, and one of the family members said, "Oh, we can't use the cell phones," and a nurse said, "Sure you can. It's okay." Things have changed. There may be some places in a hospital where they are still not allowed, but they are becoming accepted in more and more parts of the hospitals.
Cell phones
The candidates running in our state (LA) are calling cell phones. It was on the news a little bit ago that the phone numbers are the ones that were wrote on the voter registration and if you don't want the calls, to write the voter registrar.

It seems to mean i read it was against the HIPAA (?) for doctors to dictate on cell phones. I've heard stories, though, of many doctors who do. What about dictating from home--are they taking medical records at home to do this. Seems like that is a violation, too. But who is going to say anything to doctors about diddly squat stuff like rules or slowing down a little so we can understand what the heck you are saying?
WISH THEY'D PUT THEIR CELL PHONES...sm
on ice while dictating, or I have a few suggestions where to keep it. My nerves aren't frazzled enough with this industry, now we have these clowns keep their cell phones ON while dictating. This morning I had to sit through dictation from one of the worst, and he knows it, all the while having his shrill, loud cell phone ringing in my ear. I know they have to stay available as physicians, but what's wrong with voice mail, text messaging, until he/she is able to take the call in an appropriate, courteous manner. No, they have to let it keep ringing. My ears are still buzzing.
Cell phones in hospitals..sm
No cell phones allowed in hospitals. Nothing new. I recently saw a newscast on cell phones in hospitals and what they can do. Turn off respirators, mess with EKG readings, mess with infusion pumps, etc. Not only should cell phones not be used in hospitals but they should be turned off. I can't tell you how many times a day my computer jumps around when I have my cell phone anywhere close by. If this is so, I come doctors carry cell phones around the hospital. I have a dictator that constantly gets phone calls and when we went to a new dictating system, I had to shut him down because if it rang when he was dictating, well, he had to redictate because nothing was there. My son was once having a heart procedure done and while we were in the waiting room a lady was on her cell phone. A nurse noticed her and told her she had to turn it off, she kept talking and he waited until she was off. As soon as he was out of sight, she got back on. I almost got up and told her myself to get off because she was risking my son's life!
They do have wireless with laptop through cell phones now
I have it but it is slow too. Probably as slow as satellite. It is supposed to be DSL speed, but I dont think it is. I have never had DSL to know for sure. It is faster than dial up but it is slower than cable. I am able to work, but you can forget about fast downloads. Small jobs are fine. The only thing that takes so long is the actual sending/receiving dictation.

Important - Telemarketing to Cell Phones
Cell phone numbers going public tomorrow
REMINDER....all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies tomorrow and you will start to receive sale calls.
....YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS
To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222.
It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time It blocks your number for five (5) years. You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different phone number. HELP OTHERS BY PASSING THIS ON TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS. It take about 20 seconds

Nope, it is their cell phones, beepers, etc.
I agree with the poster because when they go off you can tell they are being reached for and checked to see who is calling as the dictator usually pausing and trying to find their words while still trying to check just who that is. They sit cell phones and beepers so close to the dictating units that you have screeches going off throughout the dictations. Hard on your ears. Sometimes I have to hold away and then I cannot type what is being said, oh well.
Also got rid of our house phone because we all had cell phones and that saves me about 75.00 a month
or so.
I have given my kids cell phones..and taught them how to press and hold the key to call me..so that
My kids are only 6, 8, and 9 and i used to think it was silly to give kids that age cell phones, but not anymore!!
If you would ever hear the quality of some of the dictation I heard on cell phones, buses, trains,
cars, etc. I dont care how good you are you cant do this work without blanks nor can QA. Some of them dictate with millions of people talking and laughing behind them and they are unable to be heard. PERIOD. No amount of skill and excellence will get you out of sending this stuff back without going to QA.
Yep, they dictate in noisy nursing stations, dictate in the ER, dictate in the OR when they are
cleaning up banging around and we are supposed to hear them. So much for HIPPA.
Agree! Wish they could only dictate from a specific dictation

If this is your only job and the dictate when you work - sm
then by the IRS definition you are an employee, though it does not sound like you are having taxes taken out. I take care of this problem myself by having another IC job that all I have is a deadline and I must have my work in by then, they could care less when I do it, as long as it is done on time. I have another IC job, where they asked when I would be working, a schedule of sorts, sort of what you are doing, but I do not firmly stick to it. I think it is more to give them an idea of what days you plan to work and what time of day. They do not chew on me if I vary my schedule as long as I log in and do the work. They know as an IC they cannot dictate the hours I work. I don't/cannot write off my home office as it is in my bedroom, but I write off everything else I can. If you need clarification call the company you work for and tell them of your dilemma and how your tax person says the IRS considers you an employee and since they require "set" hours then they should start taking taxes out, etc. from your pay, and see how they backpedal on the set hours issue.
The hospital where I work took down the no cell phone signs
last year. Apparently they aren't as much of a problem as they once were. Also, I was an inpatient last year and was allowed to use my cell phone in my room.
It seems like I was told that they have machines that block the phones from getting a signal in areas of the hospital where they may cause interference with equipment.
I transfer my calls to cell phone during work. nm
nm
That's an idea -- does it matter that my cell phone won't work from the house??
It rings but then cuts you off as soon as you answer. I think we are too far from a tower.
Does anyone use laptop & cell phone/Internet Card for work?
I am not real computer literate but am wondering if I couldn't get unlimited Internet with a cell phone plan and use that for my on-line job/Internet connection exclusively. I have found plans for around $70/month.
If so, I was thinking too I could possibly give up my land line phone, Callwave, my dial-up ISP (as that is all we have available where live) and actually save a little money by doing so. I don't make/receive a lot of land line calls and I have a TracFone cell phone that I don't use much now. I get excellent reception with that where I live. We have a huge tower within walking distance of where I live but we live out in the "sticks". :D I know my connection would be dependent on the reception where I live and the cell phone service I would use. I am not sure which one truly has the best coverage and/or who may be using the tower by our home but TracFone apparently does. :)
TIA.
Well, some companies want to categorize you as an IC, but dictate what hours you work. sm
That is illegal. If you are an IC, companies can not tell you what hours to work; however, they can tell you we need these hours covered on such and such day. You can either agree or disagree.
Personally, I will not commit to any set hours. I am an IC solely for that reason. I will give you 2000 lines a day in a 12 or 14 hour period or whatever period you need it in, but I will not tell them I will sit at my keyboard from 9-5.
Companies want you as an IC but they want employee schedules. Most companies are trying to do that nowadays. It is up to you, the individual MT, to accept or decline. Everyone's needs, including companies and MTs, are different.
Quite frankly, you really do need to ask the company what they expect from you, the IC MT, to really make informed decisions and choices.
I hope this helps a little bit. Good luck!
It worked; I remembered to download the work into E-Dictate

It is difficult to work at home and watch young children.
Don't take that as a slam because I had to do it, too. I got up before they did and worked for an hour or two, worked during their afternoon naps, worked after they went to bed at night, and worked a little bit in the morning while they were playing or watching Blues Clues. It wasn't fulltime, but it felt like I was chained to my computer desk from the moment I got up to the moment I went to bed.
I actually blockaded my kids in the living room with me using big plastic toyboxes or baby gates while I worked so they wouldn't escape. Lock the doors to the house and put cowbells on them so you can hear if they try to escape. If not cowbells, use those little battery operated buzzers that go off when the connection is broken. Don't wear headphones but listen through the speakers. Pay a neighborhood 'tween or older sibling $1 or more an hour to entertain the young kids after school while you're there. No job is worth the risk of your child getting into something tragic.
I was fortunate in that my kids were good about entertaining themselves for short periods of time, but certainly not for an 8-hour shift all at once. My niece and nephew are nothing like that. If they don't have your full attention, they fight and get into things. One time while I was babysitting them, I was making dinner in the kitchen. My 3 y.o. niece managed to untape the knob and turn off our water heater, drop the cordless phone into the toilet, and climb out the dog door into subzero weather in less than 5 minutes. She's still a holy terror 3 years later, but I refuse to babysit her any more.
If is difficult to work in a recliner and push a foot pedal. It can
be done but creates a strain on your feet/ankles and slows you down. I work on a picnic table under an awning when the weather is nice, but I'm not able to work as well as I do at my desk because I'm not able to have a keyboard tray and working with my keyboard on the table makes it too high. I've even tried work in bed using a tray across my lap, but then again you have the problem with pushing the foot pedal. You could use the keyboard for your function keys but it would really slow you down.
My people skills are just fine. I just want to hire people who want to work.
I've not been ugly, I've asked questions, legitimate ones. Please tell me what is wrong with that. This site is not just for MTs, it is for QA Editors, Supervisors, Service Owners, there's even sections for Billers, Coders, and Nurses.
2 people to do that amount of work, is she nuts? More like 20+ people - nm

I agree, some people will never get it but, then again, what does it say about them as people? Not
.
I agree...thank God for people like you..sm
if there is anything I can do to help, email me and I will be glad to contribute, or whatever else is needed. contact Time Warner Cable and see if they will provide a website. I wish you, and the little one of course, all the best.
I do agree, we need QA people, if for no other - sm
reason than sometimes no matter how carefully you proofread, sometimes little mistakes & typos can still slip past, and another set of eyes can catch it before it gets sent out. And of course they're invaluable for newbies, as well. I just wish they didn't have to nitpick about some things. What really irks me is when a word can be spelled more than one way. It never fails that no matter which way I spell it, it gets 'corrected', even though it's already correct. I get really tempted to just type it with a slash in-between:
' xxxxx/xxxxx ' and let them hash it out at their end.
We're also supposed to put a blank and flag it if we're not sure about a word, rather than guess. (Again, the advantage of more than one pair of eyes & ears!) Yet would you believe I have one in particular that gets ticked-off when I flag something? It's like she' rather just sit there and pick her nose and not edit anything at all. Wouldn't that eventually equate to NO JOB? I really don't get it.
Anyway, as you can tell, today I've kinda' HAD it (although putting all those little animated cartoons in my original post DID make me smile & feel better!), and I'm *boycotting* QA. Just gonna' send 'em on through with blanks, and not to QA first for a final going-over. Sometimes I get beyond caring.......
Agree, unfortunately, people are
spreading rumors that this is an offshore site now, and it isn't. There is still no offshore posting of any kind allowed.
FL University
Could it be Webster?
I agree-the nerve of some people
I agree also. It is amazing to me that people
say they make $7500 a month or whatever, yet when the conversation turns to the commercial about making $75k a year with baby in lap, everyone balks. It is just not possible. You would have to be making 20 cpgl with extra spaces included-LOL!! I do not believe either. Now if someone said 1300 a month, that I would believe, because that is the truth!!
I agree, people will assume because it's been
just like everything else...you have to look at the fine print. Even cigarettes, which will kill you...only tell you that in teeny little print. Every commercial for some gimmick to lose weight only tells you it really doesn't work way down in teen, tiny print.
AGree, I think that's what people are upset about
but...I don't think people are really looking into it and realizing that it was built out of US and maintained out of US pretty much the whole time...that info just didn't come out until recently. There was a discussion on MTchat yesterday that this site was transferred legally way back when the statement said it was. We may never know what really happened, but it is fairly easy to figure out that their initial statements (previous owners) were not exactly on the up and up.
I agree because I have heard this from many people - sm
Husband as the doctor and wife as the office manager is often a recipe for disaster. I have seen it work a time or two, but more often than not they have this arrangement to save a few bucks and the wife has NO idea about office management, but guess what? Hubby/doc is too busy seeing patients and she runs the show, with often disastrous results. I say run while you can...PLENTY of places looking for qualified medical help with fewer hassles too most likely.
MT University Is this legit?
Got this in email..
I think they are in the Phillipines... (I didnt know where else to put this.)

University of Phoenix
I did some checking several years ago and I found from my research that University of Phoenix was the one with the most prestige as far as on-line degrees. You have to be careful, because some of the places offering these are not worth the paper they are printed on, to an employer. But, I found that UOP actually is the *best* of the on-line universities. I didn't enroll, but I seriously considered it. It is extremely expensive and I've heard from someone I know who was a student with UOP, that it is challenging (she worked a full-time job in addition to her classes), but she really loved it. Unfortunately, I've lost touch with her now and I have no idea if she ever finished and got her degree.
