This is the whole idea
The corporations want it that way-- they don't give a rip about the "middle class". The CEOs just want to be able to buy a new yacht every year, new cars, have several homes all over the country and maybe the world, etc. It's all about GREED. That's why nobody will do anything about illegal immigration. They want to pay their workers as little as possible so it's all profit for them.
What is your idea of
"enough?"  How much do you think the job is worth?
An idea
for the businesses that you should contact are the ones where your friend has done business such as bank,church, her place of employment, and any place that her parents were involved in. When we had a fundraiser for someone that I worked with we contacted a local band and a bar with a dance floor to helped raise money for his injuries. They all volunteered their service free of charge. And many people showed up to help him out. Just a thought!

Better idea
If you have an experienced MT doing the recruiting, he/she can tell just in a conversation whether the applicant does/does not know his/her business.  As you said, you're going to know within the first couple of days whether or not the applicant is going to pan out  If you're testing for an MT to do cardiac caths, start a conversation about cardiac caths.  All MTs I have ever known love to discuss their trade...if they know it.  These extensive tests put out by most companies these days are a horrific waste of time...they don't prove a thing!

Maybe it's like one website I went to, where it seemed the way to do it was to respond with an e-mail first (pasting a resume into your e-mail and saying what job you were interested in), and then they would respond and tell you what tests they wanted you to take?

If you are using actual WavPedal software, try this first.  Open WavPedal - settings - options - file associations - and make sure .dss is checked (or add file type .dss and check it).  Close.  Then, right click on your voice file and "open with" and choose WavPedal.  Should open.  Sounds like your default player for voice files is not WavPedal.  I think it will ask you (can't remember off hand) then just choose YES for WavPedal as default for all files with .dss association.

Here is an idea

Start out not charging anyone anything but time.  Everyone who joins contributes a skill to the organization such as marketing, PR, etc.  It costs nothing to do e-mail newsletters, just time and some people to write for it.  Online meetings on Yahoo or MSN groups would be nothing to do.


Also getting a website can be pretty cheap if a few members would be willing to design it.  Everyone has a friend of a friend who has this business or that.  A lot of times, especially in the case of smaller businesses, they are willing to trade small services for exposure and advertising.  You would be amazed.


I used to work in Marketing for nonprofits before deciding to stay home as an MT. I also still do consulting work.  I am all for a new organization and would love to participate in any way I could to back to representing what "they" were supposed to.

makes me feel! Hopefully mine does the same. I've unplugged it and am leaving it alone for awhile. I found out to fix it the cost will be around $300. I sure hope it works.

I do not know how my supervisor puts up with me sometimes, but she has me set up to work another way until I get this fixed. Thank you all for the help!

You know I'm beating myself up trying hard to figure out how to do the hard hyphen and hard space so it expands that way and your idea of doing it first then highlighting and entering it is not something I would have ever thought of!!! This works great. Thank you so much for all your help.

I have a not great account that gets cherry picked into extreme lateness. I don't mind if you cherry pick to get a decent doctor or two after having a ton of crappy ones but to cherry pick out all the good stuff and put the rest of us behind with all the bad ones is just wrong.

I don't know logistically how to go about this, but as a sociology student I know there should be a way. What if we could somehow poll people to see if they approve of their records being sent overseas and use that in our letters?

I have noticed that with every company i have worked for the general style has been not to reveal or encourage the MTs to talk.  This is totall a divide and conquer thing. It would be nice if we could all (safely without lossing our jobs) list ourselves somewhere and what company we work for.  If things are bad for everyone and we could team up...who knows.....

You can if you have the disc. I'm not personally sure about those programs, but, when I first started with my co. I took my computer there for them to load because it was in same state and not too far away. Anyway, when I bought new computer, I just had them overnight me the disk instead of taking new computer to them. Then they walked me through some final details. So, if you can't transfer it, that might be a thought.

Let's face it, they want us to wipe their noses for them.

I don't blame you for being upset at all, but it won't do any good to talk to your OM. They'll do whatever the dictators ask.

When that happens to me, I get upset for a few hours, grumble to myself, then stick a post-it note near my computer screen, and after a couple of days, it's habit and I don't think about it anymore.

here's an idea -
and not off the subject.  I was due for a new car but can't afford one now that my wages have been cut to match Indians.  Toyota Camrys are made in Kentucky (and I think West Virginia, some parts) - yes it is a Japanese corporation but American workers do have jobs.  Bumper stickers are a great idea.  I had considered a billboard - I have no idea how much they cost.  Hospital security would probably throw me out but I can walk across the street on public property.

MD-created templates are extremely difficult and time-consuming to use. You are left to guess at what they mean, and then you get no feedback. They are probably so sure their bases are covered that they aren't even reviewing their reports anymore.

First of all, sorry about the typos in my post above (it was the middle of the night).

You also might want to look into the many customer service jobs (call center jobs) you can do from home now as well.

Google it to find a list of legitimate companies.

One last idea
Go to options, and unclick where it says continue playback and see what happens. You want to talk slowing down, that's what the F keys did for me. Maybe you can figure out a good pattern of when to lift your foot. Maybe all you need is a rhythm.

Call and ask if that account is still a client and if you can have more of that work. Tell them how satisfied you are working for their company and how comfortable you were doing that particular account or worktype. Ask if there is anything he or she can do to help you out with this.

Do not talk about money or how much your line count has dropped!!!!

Just present it in a positive light and hopefully the supervisor or whoever will come through for you. I think your approach to the subject means everything. People would rather deal with others in a positive manner than have someone call and "complain".

I'm wondering if maybe he understood exactly what the kids were saying and just chose to ignore them.

Maybe, maybe not.

I do know that the DMV here tests in English and in Spanish so maybe he doesn't have to speak or read English to get a license for driving a school bus. I really don't know.

The real problem is that a kid was having a medical emergency and the bus driver didn't really give a rip.

So instead of having one child on the bus in distress, it was all of the kids because they were so upset that he was ignoring this girl's problem.

One of the doctor's in the office I work for is my step-uncle. He told me recently that they brought in a consultant to help them learn how to run the office smoother. This is a practice that has been in business for 40 years. He and I don't talk business when we are together and I don't go to him if I have a complaint, just don't think it is fair to put him in that position. Some things I have been able to work out with the employees in the office but things like my paycheck..it is mailed to me..and I often don't get it until after I have e-mailed and faxed my invoice at least twice. Frustrating!

I have no idea which FTP server it is.  I was sent the link to the server and instructions on how to obtain files.  I have talked to QA and she said she also believes it is a permission issue.  I am headed to actually meet her and a few other in the company in a few weeks.  So, hopefully, we will get it all worked out then.  For now I just email her every morning the listing of the .wav files I downloaded and she erases them on her end.  She says she does not mind and she knows I will be in her office in a few weeks anyway. 


Thanks for all the help.  I will google that and see what comes up.  BTW how do I find out which FTP server it is I use?  It just says ftp then a bunch of numbers.

as I have never worked the graveyard shift and am thinking about applying for a job to work these overnight hours.  I assume the rate is generally more with a 3rd shift differential, but what is a realistic amount to charge per line?  If you work for a company on 3rd shift, can you tell me what you are paid per line?  I would greatly appreciate some info....TIA

How is this for an idea--Buy a white paint pen from a craft store and then coat with clear nail polish or something like polyurethane.  I do not know if this would work or affect the feeling of the keys (just thinking out loud here), so definitely would try it out on a piece of hard plastic first.

I've had the same problem - have rubbed off 6 letters from my Microsoft ergonomic that I bought 3 months ago. These keyboards are known for this. I like to be able to see the letters (yes I know where they are, but I like to see them, too). I just sent for a set of keyboard stickers from a place online(just Google keyboard stickers). They are black with white letters and you just stick them on the key. Just sent for them yesterday, but hope they will do the trick.

Do you know of anyone who would like the gas station/bakery job? If you do, perhaps you could recommend them when you give your notice and you wouldn't feel so guilty about leaving.

The Idea

1.  Large and small health care facilities, public, private and military, pay billions of dollars for transcription of their health care documentation.  These costs are passed on to patients and tax payers. 
2.  Lack of Americans in the medical transcription work force is causing potential American jobs to be sent offshore. 
3.  Voice recognition technology is nowhere near ready to be an efficient solution for health care facilities with regular turnover of dictators (teaching hospitals, clinics, VA medical centers). 
4.  Medical Transcription Service Organizations (MTSOs) advertise voice recognition as a way to reduce transcription costs to facilities, but are in reality cutting labor costs to compensate. 
5.  Vital medical record and patient information is being sent overseas, where security is always an issue. 

I propose to resolve all of these issues in the following manner: 

1.  Provide a standard framework for dictated hospital and clinic documents utilizing current dictation styles. 
2.  Educate new dictators in their impact on costs and the billing cycle, and provide instruction and tools for more efficient dictation.  Provide immediate and regular feedback on performance. 
3.  A portion of the savings will be passed on to local community or technical colleges to provide medical transcription training programs.  
4.  MTSOs will also contribute to MT training programs in their area. 

I've calculated that such a plan could potentially save 50% of current transcription costs nationwide.  Better dictation practices will reduce the number of lines being dictated per report, reducing the time necessary to transcribe dictation and improving transcription efficiency.  A more standardized style will reduce time spent dictating and, as a bonus, aid in the voice recognition capture process and improve that technology’s application in medical documentation.

Local community colleges and technical schools will benefit, as well as the students that represent American jobs kept here.

I have a better idea
All clinics and hospitals should be required by law to have their own transcriptionists. Outsourcing of any kind should be outlawed, not only for patient privacy reasons, but to keep medical transcription from becoming a minimum wage industry. The competition between thousands of MTSOs has resulted in lower rates for clients and thus lower pay for transcriptionists, while MTSO executives rake in all the bucks. This is only going to get worse as time goes on. Any hospital or clinic that can't afford to provide their own documentation of healthcare shouldn't be in business anyway.

I agree with this idea wholeheartedly. If a hospital can't afford MDs, RNs, they shut down. It should be the same for MTs.

Have you tried Express Scribe ever. It is a free download and I tried it when I was attempting freelance work. It is kind of cumbersome, but it is after all free. They also have Express Dictate, so the docs may be able to use this to make it even easier. Hope all works out for you. It is nice to hear of someone having some good luck with finding work for a change.
Not a bad idea
but is anyone listening to anyone right now anywhere? Are we not in the throes of chaos in this country and globally for that matter? Double standards exist and are thriving in every sector of our economy right now. The CEO and white collar crime is still rampant. All the Obama administration is saying now is "Shame on you wallstreet."  Shame does not deter greed!

Ok, if they are persistent in using tapes, then if they have a STAT report and cannot tell you what tape and where at, then charge by the hour to find the report.  Say $25 for finding STAT reports.  Back in the days, my clients would always keep a log of who is on what tape for both of our sakes!  Now, they can tell me what time the appt is and I can narrow it down considerably for how the docs dictate. 


Then for the actual typing of the report, personally if my client does not abuse the STAT system, I do not charge them anything more.  But, if they do abuse it, then I implement double line rate charge for all STAT reports.

what if i just have no idea...?
I was thinking a nurse... cause I think I'd be good at it cause (i hate to toot my own horn) but i know im really friendly and i love people...

But then I'm not sure if i could deal with all those things that nurses have to... blood, cleaning up yucky stuff (LOL), etc.

Then I think... well... I want to be a news anchor! or... i want to be an assistant that organizes and just... basically keeps files and stuff, i just dont know what that is ...

I am LOST.
lost without transcription, i hate it. I thought this would be my career well into the days where I had kids of my own...

At 28 I'm so scared to start over, especially in this economy where affording school is going to be hard :(

I wish there was court reporting where I was at. I took it for 2 years when I first started college... now there is not one around where I moved to.

Oh well... im just trying to keep my head above water but was JUST told my work will basically be gone by April 1st when the new system is implemented... that was hard to swallow so what a timing for this question.
I REALLY need to sit down and talk to a career counselor or something...?
