I have a health condition that precludes me getting any type of affordable insurance...when I last priced it, and this was 5 years ago, it would have been $700/month. For me. Just me. Not my entire family. One person. I can only imagine what it is now. I was afraid to shovel my walk all winter because if I feel and something went "snap", I was scrooged. It seems to me that the people who are most opposed to a single payer system or anything else that would provide affordable health care to everybody are the people fortunate enough to have it through a spouse, through work, etc.
I have a friend from India who immigrated over here (yeah, I know!). When he got his job, he could not understand why I was ooooing and aaaahing over his spectacular health care coverage. He really couldn't understand the sense in paying the $300 month for healthcare. Silly fellow was used to just being able to go to a hospital when he was sick without worrying about such silly things as how to pay for it. Then, his daughter developed appendicitis which ruptured. After middle of the night open appy and 3 days of IV antibiotics and hospital stay, it was almost priceless to see the look on his face when those bills started rolling in. I believe the final tally ended up being $19,000+ for that little adventure. He told me he now understood why universal healthcare is such a big deal in this country, and even he can't figure out how the average worker is supposed to survive.
