I'm willing to try anything right now.

The only thing that I had checked was allow background saves--the others were already unchecked.

I rarely use the button in the toolbar to save. I usually go with the Ctrl+S combo and that's been doing the trick. I haven't been losing what I type, even if it's between Ctrl+S saves (which may be what the background save is doing for me) when Word crashes. It' just so darn annoying!

Thanks for the idea and I'll let you know if this makes any difference at all.
