I'm doing it.

at age 47, I am enrolled in nursing school full time. After the shock of the initial six weeks, I got in the swing of things and actually made the dean's list last semester. This is my third semester starting this fall in a BSN program. Two things to consider: 1. Can you even get in? Community colleges have waiting lists, and universities may be extremely competitive. Our class had 1000 applicants and they took the top 70. If you didn't have a 3.5, you didn't get in. 2. You will need pre-req which will eat up some time too.
I figure I still have at least 15 years to work. I have been watching MT take a downhill slide. There will only be a few jobs left after SR, EMR and off shoring take their bites, which are more and bigger each day. The competition will be fierce and wages and working conditions will drop. Heck, I started at 9 cpl ten years ago. Now you can hardly bid a doc's office for 11 cpl. And it's just going to get worse.
Your MT experience will come in very handy (I'm the one that the teachers ask how to spell things LOL) and your life experience at 40 will be invaluable as well. Go for it!
