always go back to working at home. It sounds like you've got the perfect setup, too, if it's only 5 miles away. Is is bike-able? If so, that would be a nice way to commute, either occasionally, or every day!
I'm in the position of making the same switch, myself. I worked on-site before, and hated having to get up early, go in to work, and deal with co-workers and bosses, but the at-home job just isn't keeping food on my table or gas in my tank. So I'm hoping to eliminate the "middleman" (the MTSO) and go back to a hospital job.
A teaching hospital sounds like a great opportunity! You'll get a lot of variety & interesting work in a place like that, AND you'll make a much better wage, have more security & benefits. And just think: Paid days off! Vacations! A dependable income!
I typed for a teaching hospital in the past, and I particularly liked doing the students' and residents' dictation. They were usually 100 times better than the regular doctors were at dictating.
So yes, give it a try. And if it doesn't work out, if you part on good terms with your old company, you can most likely go back. If you're an IC, it's very possible that some of your old accounts might want to back, as well.
I liked the freedom and low-stress-level of working at home, but not the constant worry about money. That's been really getting me down. So keep us all posted on how your transition goes, because I'm probably not the only one headed in that direction.
Good luck! :)
