To Laurie....

Just wanted to let you know that I am STILL laughing over your post about BP pills even today.  I laughed all through work last night.  I thought maybe it was too funny because I was so tired.  But NOPE, I still thought it was just as funny today!!!!

Thanks for the GREAT laugh.

to laurie and everyone else.....sm
I do agree with you Laurie. This is our fault. I see what you see too. However, I can't sit back and accept that the only way to make a difference is by letting things be as they are and work our rear ends off for 4 cpl or less. If we do this, I don't see the future getting better for us.

I can't speak for anyone else about how often they post or what their reasons are for posting, but I speak for myself. I happened upon MTStars because I was job hunting. I found information about what is going on and I am upset by it and trying to do something. I feel there is a strong cause here. I have since found work and by next week you won't see me post as often as I do now.

If nothing else, I think there should be a new association specifically for American MTs.

I don't know what else to say on the subject. I have been successfully shut down.
Now, Laurie --- if what the others say is what they WANT to, same for you dear...
you're seeing what YOU want to. You're not the authority to say you see him for "what he is". You see him the same as others -- for what you WANT to see in him.

You're no more superior in knowledge than anyone else. It's your opinion versus theirs. LOL
Who the hell's Laurie?
See, you don't know everything. Thanks for the belly laugh! You have no idea who I am.

"You know, I used to be very, very opposed to offshoring. Then I started doing some research on it. Do you know the primary reason why MTSOs would dare upset their MLS staff by offshoring? Because this is a 24/7 business and we won't work overnight and we won't do anything "difficult" like ESL docs or harder worktypes. It's as simple as that."

It isn't really as simple as that, at least not for me. I do work overnight. I do work the hard reports. I do work the difficult ESLs. I haven't been an MT for as long as the majority of people on this forum. I have only been working for 4 years, so I take what I can get.

"Before you start protesting, ask yourself these questions: Do I work overnight? Am I willing to work overnight? Would I be willing to take on an overnight shift if it meant the difference between working or losing my job to offshore?"

I work overnight, as stated above. Yes, if I was settled in a day shift position and switching to overnight would save my job from being outsourced, I would do it. I have a 5-year-old daughter and am a single parent. I have to do what I can to get the money I need to raise my daughter. There are many MTs in the same boat I am.

"I'm sure by now, you're saying, "No way - I have (kids/family/another job/a life) that I don't want to interrupt for work." Well, I"m sorry then. Until we remember the basic reason we're in this situation, we'll never get anywhere."

I agree with you on these aspects because there are MTs out there who would not work overnight and try to avoid the difficult dictators. I think they need to take a step back and think about whether or not they really want this line of work.

"Do you want to make a difference in whether or not your company offshores? Volunteer to change your shift to the overnight. Often times, you can get an overnight shift differential, which means not only will you have more work available but you'll also make more money doing it! Look - the industry is changing; it has to. We're the ones responsible for making it this way because we won't do things that are uncomfortable or the slightest bit difficult - Do you do ESL docs? What about hard worktypes? No? Then look in the mirror before you start spouting out about offshore."

I wouldn't have posted my ideas if I didn't feel strongly about the situation. If I didn't do ESL docs, didn't work overnight and avoided the hard worktypes, I would only be reading the posts of others. I sure as heck would not offer to take a stand with anyone else willing to do the same.

I know there are MTs out there not willing to do the above, but how many out there are? I have a feeling there are more than you and I could imagine. The majority of the reason for outsourcing to another country is to eliminate costs.

I don't know about anyone else, but I feel I am worthless. When I first started, I felt that I had somewhat of an important job. I don't feel that way anymore and that makes me sad. I like being an MT. It is an interesting profession and I learn something new everyday. Now, it just doesn't feel the same anymore.
To Laurie.....Again Bravo!
I agree!

How much time do MTs dedicate to their job, who are willing to start a big, revolutionary campaign regarding the MT business to stop offshoring?

Maybe they should really work in another industry.

People who are not even ready to pay for a mentoring program? Come on! And refuse to give back the computer that was provided by the company because they worked so 'hard' and do not think that they were compensated enough? Where is their integrity?

It is a business and a f r e e market. Don't these people ever get it?

LOL This IS funny. So YOU are the REAL LAURIE and the
other is an IMposter?! RRROOFFFLLLL
Who's Laurie? The single mom post was mine
HI
I agree. I was shocked too. Laurie seems irritated; thought a little
mothering might help calm her down.

I'm raising my children alone. I know how it is.

((Hugs))

I am so sorry you are going through this.  It's not easy to be in that situation.  I have been under a mountain of debt and staring at bankrupty before, with two small children and no money for food, and no help in sight.

I second the suggestion to talk with your creditors.  Also, pay the necessities first, which of course you know already.  I am going to look into Dave Ramsey myself, after that suggestion.

One thing I have leared is that change is constant.  Things will keep changing and this will get better with time.

I do know people who have downsized from owning a home to moving into an apt. for a season in order to get out of debt.  That may sound crazy, but in THEIR position it helped them with utility costs, commute costs, etc.  I am not telling you to do that at all, but perhaps there are other options that would make things easier for you to pay everything right now.

Sometimes I feel like I would like to take just my laptop and a change of clothes and buy an RV and hit the road.

Wish we could have a big yard sale together.

Hugs to you.....sm
So sorry for your loss.   I know how it feels.  Let the memories comfort you.

HUGS! Yeah, I get it too.

My sister who is a CNA at a nursing home is constantly saying I 'just type what people say'.  Yeah, OK... I'd like her to even TRY to do this!!  My other sister thought that way too until I played a dictation for her and she put the headset down and said he couldn't understand a word said.  Wish I could get the older sister to try it, but she'd not admit defeat anyway.

Or how it isn't a real job because I don't go to an office everyday.  Yeah, I'd like to see them work with a toddler underfoot and still do a good job.

I'm happy with my career choice though and I'm proud of myself and my husband is proud of me so I'm happy with that!    Plus I get to have this great job and still never have to miss any of my daughter's firsts.

We all have days like that. Hugs to ya...sm

Awwwwwwww....((((((hugs))))))))) to you.

First, cyber hugs. Next, you've done nothing wrong
There is no reason for you to feel humiliated. He is the problem, not you. You know your family best and must choose the path that seems right to you. However, please consider making it clear to your family, your mother in particular, what has been going on and why you have been forced to make this choice. He has no right to make you miserable. Is there a trusted family member in whom you could confide? Having an ally in your family would likely lighten the burden. In any event, please strengthen your relationships outside your family so that you have caring friends and associates to count on if there is no one in your family to turn to.
Have you noticed how Ryan hugs all over Elliott?
He doesn't touch Taylor or the other guys but each time Elliott is on stage with him he's hugging and touching him.
I truly hope that you get some resolution to this. ((Hugs to you, my dear.))

How in the WORLD is this possible?

Welcome to my world...
This explains my summer exactly. My kids have never argued so much. I have three boys and two girls. The girls are the oldest and have been fighting almost daily. We got to the point where we forced them to sit together and hold hands in silence for a certain period of time because we knew they'd hate that at the age of 10 and 9. It actually did work. They don't fight as much as they did a few weeks ago, and when I threaten them with holding hands they stop.

C.C.
How in the world do you do that?
I work 2 part-time positions and feel pretty stretched most of the time. I cannot imagine doing 2 full-time positions.

Congratulations!
What in the world?
What happened to your face? I've never seen anything like it. Did someone fart on it or did you have a really bad accident? Wow, it is unbelievable to me how ugly some people in this world are. What in the heck!
WONDER WHY THE WORLD IS LIKE IT IS?

How in the world did AT&T
If I were you I would insist on talking to some higher ups at AT&T. Unlimited long distance is exactly that.
and the world is all about ego. Never, never
tell your boss something is wrong, even with one of their choice (or not so choice) picks of supervisors, because then you are telling them may have made a mistake in the person they selected, and that is also a blow to their ego.
then how in the WORLD
do you think he's going to know what the patient's problem is next time he/she comes in for followup if he DOESN'T READ THE DANG TRANSCRIPT????  Ask the receptionist maybe?  Geeshhh!
I have the best job in the world
Have worked hourly for the past decade. Love it. Now at around 30/hr with 9 weeks paid vacation a year. Would not trade it for anything. Nice getting paid when work is slow or when you have "off" days.
It is a whole new world
There are so many more words and medications to deal with but you should pick it up quick, just like any other field. A lot depends on what particular field you are working in. (Breast, heme-malignancies, thoracic, GI, Gu....) If you want I will send you some sites I used when starting and still use.
It is a new world
I agree that oncology is a new world, but it is very interesting and I just love when I have oncolgoy work. The hardest part for me was the radiation drugs, but I have a good website for those. It was about a month before I felt in the zone. :)
Best in the world???
I know that we would all like to believe that, but it gets tougher and tougher all the time. I just did a quick search, as I knew that either last night or the night before I had heard or read about our ranking among the 191 or 193 countries included in the WHO ranking. The results I came across put us 37th back in 2000, and that number fell from the 1997 ranking of 24th (I believe it was).

I don't know about you, but I do not consider 37th place the best, nor do I consider best to be a country where a woman dies on the ER floor while a janitor mops around her and both her boyfriend and another person in the ER have to call 911 -- Imagine, having to call 911 from the ER . . . pitiful.

How in the world

do you manage to do so much? Any suggestions appreciated. I am struggling to reach 1000 per day. Also, about how many hours did it take to achieve this? Thanks!

HOW IN THE WORLD?
Does a grown woman swallow two loop earrings?  Yep.  Did reports on a woman (whom I know as I live in a small community) who swallowed two loop earrings and had to have EGD to retrieve them!  I have typed plenty of swallowed foreign body reports on children but a grown educated woman?
Maybe not end of world, but....
a significant dent in paycheck if you are paid production.

Just like you, I did the typewriter/correction tape thing. I typed about 50 radiology reports/day back then, and that was considered very high. I was paid hourly, working on-site, had benefits and all that, so it didn't matter if I typed 50 or 10 reports, I got paid the same.

Most of us are now paid production. With word Expanders and spell check, my current average is 125-150 radiology reports/day depending on which one of my accounts I work the most on. As another poster said, when you are typing 90 mph you make typos. If I am paid production, I will not take the time to look up spelling via Google, a dictionary, or whatever or sit here and read over every report I type when there are programs available to do that for you. Time is money when you are on production pay. Our pay has gone down over the years, and keeping production up is the only way to compensate. Without spell check or word expanders, speed slows significantly down as you proof read and double check each report, therefore the paycheck takes a hit.

To say we are 'spoiled' I think is the wrong term. I for one am grateful! Those tools are what we need to make a survivable wage in 2008. In typewriter days, we weren't paying $3+ for gas and oil. A gallon of milk was not $4. It's all relative.

To the OP, there is no way I would take a job without Word Expanders AND a spell check unless it was hourly pay. If they do not provide you with them, see if they will allow you to install your own personal copy. You will offset the cost of that software within a month if you are paid production and you can deduct it on your tax return.

What in the world?

Come on people.  You actually believe this?

Welcome to MT world
This has been going on for as long as I have been doing this, 10 years now. What is really annoying is when you get some dictators that are consistent, and you get them down pat, they will vanish off the face of the earth. You could try ESR (speech recognition)editing, but it pays real low, and it is very very tedious work, very boring. I can say, I will quit this business all together before I get stuck doing that all day long, which might come sooner than later. Good luck!!
