How long before they give you the boot?

When starting out entry level at a company, what is the norm for probationary period?  I worked partime as an IC MT for a year for a friend, did inhouse TX for 7+yrs for specialty MD's office. All this and never had a problem.

Now that I am doing IC work with a national, it seems that everything I thought I knew about grammar and terminology couldn't hold a candle to the expectations of the nat'l companies.  Now I am begining to get self conscious about every little thing to the point where it takes me a rediculous amount of time to get it done.

It's not like I'm making huge mistakes or anything.  For the most part I do have my terminology and grammar down......its just the little things.  For example, I never knew that there was a difference in the way the phrase 'follow up' should be written-as two words, hyphenated or as one single word.  Didn't know that it depends on if it is used as a noun, adjetive, verb, etc.

I like the company I work for, but man do I feel inadequate.

I do give her credit for that - she came a long way. (sm)
I know she does a lot of good for a lot of people.  I just think somewhere along the line she lost touch with "real" people.  I guess that's bound to happen, though.  I don't have a problem with the school in Africa, she can do what she wants with her "own" money.  I do think, though that a lot of times she takes credit for things she didn't really do.  Maybe that goes with the territory too, or maybe people really don't care.
How long do you give a new job before you quit?
Just started a new job two weeks ago and have a gut feeling it is not going to work out. The transcription itself is okay, it's everything else -- time consuming ADT, recordkeeping, etc.

What's the quickest you have ever quit a job or how long do you give a new job before saying Adios?

This job is a second job because I need extra money. So I can quit and still have my primary income.
How long do you give a new job before you decide it's not a good fit for you? sm

My saga follows. Please go to the bottom of post for my question :)

I've been with my current company as a PT emp. for 2 1/2 months. Everything about them seems to be quite fair, not great, but very fair. I'm still on hourly pay of a whopping $8.50 till I get my production up. Therein lies the problem, I cannot EVER see getting my line count up with the inordinately excessive number of ESLs on my acct. It's just ridiculous. All I'm asking is to actually TRANSCRIBE for a living, instead of rewinding and relistening 1000 freakin' times a day.

I've never gotten the feeling that I'm being taken advantage of or given the crap work, I just believe I'm on a very high percentage ESL account. I don't mind doing ESLs, I really don't. I just want more understandable drs thrown into the mix.

This is my first job after graduating and I was lucky enough to be hired for acute care. I'd like to continue in acute care. I just want to be able to PRODUCE, improve and ENJOY my job. I want to be doing MT work for many years to come.

I'd just like some opinions from those of you with more experience about what you might do in my situation.

Also, how long do you give a job before you decide it's not a good fit for you? Am I giving up too quickly?

unpronounceable name, like Thyvongngang Tamboyvonangouwengay - and then say "common spelling" like it was John Smith. Cracked us both up every time.
Bucky might get the boot . .
Simon was right - that hair was just bad! The stylists are doing them wrong.
Chris got the boot.
A very talented man; dont' fret his life has been changed forever, he will be a very, very rich man, and deserving of it.  He is a bald rocker?  I cannot get behind that, if you are a rocker you have to have hair.  He has such an ego that when Seqrist blurted it out, he was shocked.  I feel sorry for his overweight wife and her insecurities.  At one point earlier in the AI season,  he did a song that he felt was proper, about trying to be loyal to his wife, and all things associated with sudden stardom.  You guys take this far to seriously, the American people vote, and we have only been wrong once, when Rubin beat out Clay, I could not believe that, still don't. I was glad to see him go, he needed to be taken down at least a notch.  He got too confident, and last week and this week, he got beaten out.  Get over it.
How far does it get into the boot process? sm
A bootup problem always suggests something related to the hard drive, but there's stuff that happens during the boot before the hard drive comes into the picture. Do you see anything at all on your screen when you turn the computer on?
When does it occur? On boot up? downloading? other?

I had a dual boot up setup. sm
I had 1 monitor,
2 keyboards,
2 mouse, 2 tower PC.
It had a button to push to switch over to the other PC.

On 1 PC was their platform and I needed to still access my PC for all my reference stuff I had created.

So on their PC, somehow it was set up where both PCs, my DSL, the internet to use Google and email

Sounds cumbersome, but it was okay, set up at the same workstation, did not have to shift chairs, the keyboards were kinda on top of each other or just in front of the other. Used the same monitor for both PCs.
Sometimes it is very difficult to boot up and click on that first report (sm)
every morning, but I'm always grateful that I am able to be at home to do this job. I recently contemplated getting back out in the regular workforce, but a couple of weeks ago I had reality smack me in the face.

My daughter has to be dropped off an hour early at school 3 days a weeks for a choral group she participates in. It's quite rare that I have be the taxi as my husband leaves for work early enough to take her, and the school is on his way to work.

One morning, he had to be to work quite early, so the job fell to me. It was dark, cold, and rainy with spitting snow that morning. As I sat in the Jeep warming it up and waiting for my daughter to drag herself out of the house, my brain was screaming NEVER, EVER DO I WANT TO DO THIS EVERY MORNING. NO WAY! NO HOW! PLEASE LET THIS BE OVER SOON.!

I wanted to kiss my house when I got back into the warmth and light, I kid you not. After working at home for 14 years, I am ill-suited to deal with the weather, traffic, and people woes the 9-to-5'ers deal with every day.

Thank you God for blessing me with the skills and intelligence to be an MT.
Here's one site that tells you how you can dual boot Vista and XP.

i have been through some rough times lately and had to apply for some help. there are signs, big signs, all over our offices saying "YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE LEGAL TO GET HELP". so we and our government do give them our benefits whether they are legal here or not. now that is messed up. i am helping to support them so they can take away my jobs and i can't even support my kids and yes i get benefits, wow $75 a month in food stamps which lasts not even a week in a household of 6. don't get me wrong, i am thankful for any help at the moment, but i get penalized for trying to work my tail off and still can't survive.

there was recently an article in our local newspaper where one of our local school districts tried to charge $1000 a year for each illegal student enrolled. it was bulked and the illegals got a lawyer to sue for discrimination. the school district merely stated that they had to HIRE extra teachers that could speak the foreign language just to teach these children and were trying to offset some of the expenses. ridicilous!! so again our taxpayers money is paying to educate illegals as well.
Aw come one give her a break. She said she was sorry and is willing to refund. Give her a chance to

do what is right.  If she fails to do what is right, then go about this in an adult way and not act like such a child.  "you suck"  That is so immature.

She is responding to you and you are eating her alive.  Why would she put herself out there to be treated like this if she didnt mean it.

I am really astonished at how people can act on here.  Would you treat people like this in person?  If you do, I cant imagine you having very many friends.

Remember we are all "HUMAN."

How long should I wait after applying for a position before I follow-up. It has been as long as two
without hearing from some.  Just wondering if I should send an e-mail to follow-up to see if they received my resume or not.  I don't want to offend anyone but feel two weeks should be long enough for someone to at least acknowledge my resume and that I have applied for a position.  Right now I would accept anything even a note saying no thanks.  Any advice would be appreciated.  I haven't had to apply for a job for the past 10 years so I am a bit rusty at this.  Thanks again for any advice.
Congrats! How long have you been a MLS and how long did you study for the test!

Please see message. I have three daughters with long, long hair.
I also have long hair down to my waist and my three girls have hair that long too. My daughter brought them home from school last year. I was devestated and grossed out!!!! I have never had to deal with lice. Anyway, we did the treatments and two of my girls broke out in a severe rash with the OTC stuff. Their little heads were so sore!! I thought I was being meticulous with eggs, only to find them hatching again down the road. A nurse at the pediatricians office suggested I try oil to suffocate them since my girls were allergic to the lice solution. I bought a huge bottle of veggie oil and dumped it on all three heads, plus my own. I then wrapped the heads in platic wrap and then a towel. I left this on for 30 minutes. It takes a while to wash out the oil, but we never, ever had the lice or eggs again!!! If you try this, make sure you put on an old shirt and put a towel around your shoulders. Obviously we were desperate, but we all have such long hair and very thick hair so I was willing to try anything. And I figured there was no chemicals involved so that was pretty safe. And it sure did help my littles ones since their scalps were pretty raw from the solution. Hope this helps and Good luck!

I had a problem with this for a long, long time sm
I have always worked days, like from 6-3. Over the last few years, it didn't matter how much sleep I got, I became real groggy between 7 and 11. Really shoots the day. Talked to my doctor and he said my blood pressure pills were the culprit but he refused to change me to another brand or dosage since I have multiple aneurysms (2 in the brain). My BP has been stable for a long time and he wants to "keep it on the low side". I tried taking them before I went to bed instead of early in the morning, but then I had headaches all day. So, I am changing to a night shift for a few months so I can sleep when those pills kick in and so far it is working pretty good. I stay mostly awake during my shift and die when I hit the bed from 6 am to 10 am, then I lay down again later in the afternoon for 2-3 hours. I still get 6-7 hours of sleep, it's just split up during the day, plus I am mostly awake now when I sit down to type. I don't have to deal with the heat in my office, either. It tends to warm up real fast in here with the south sun on the house and 2 pc's running all day, even with the air conditioner on.
Way back when, a long, long time
ago and in a galaxy far, far away, I had my own accounts also and some years cleared $75,000.  Yes it can be done, but you need to have your own accounts.  Also lots of delivery, and other duties involved.  I work for a large national now and make much less, but I got tired of accountants, having to deal with hardware problems, deadlines, driving deliveries, printing, printers, etc.  So I decided to simplify my taxes and stay home and just type.  Don't have to worry about computers either, because the company will just send me a new one.
Long, long files. Seemed like they'd never end! I'd never go back to VA again. nm
s
I've been doing this a long, long time...

I used to make $70,000 and up a year and did so for most of the late 80s and 90s (one girl used to make six figures a year working 7 days a week!)  Because we were making more money than the supervisors and Medical Records Directors in hospitals, they began to switch to transcription services which were sprouting up all over the place.  Plus AAMT came into existence and even though in the beginning it claimed it was to fight for transcriptionists (although assured us it was NOT a union), they eventually morphed into an organization that was more management friendly.  They developed the "guidelines" and the 65-char line.  That was the beginning of the end for those high-end wages.  Then all those mickey mouse transcription schools popped up, and now outsourcing overseas.  YES, we're complaining.

Been in this biz a long, long time, 30+ years and....sm
I love/loved MTing. However, things have changed so much during these years. The job definitely gets easier; don't have to look up much, can decipher ESLs much easier, in other words, you get pretty comfortable with things and you have confidence in yourself. The more experience you have the easier the job, but....

I actually made more money 10 years ago!! We didn't have speech recognition and you actually got paid for headers/footers, demographics, carbon copies, etc., you got paid for what you did fairly; today, I am not so sure.

You will feel burned out at times, but that passes and you find you like your job again.

Good luck to you!!
A long, long time ago, I was going thru
a really bad time emotionally and physically. I was suffering, and my transcribing suffered. I assure you - if you are to the point of not paying your rent, literally, and needing food stamps, there is something else going on in your life than current transcription rates. We are all in this industry and many are thriving, most getting along comfortably. If you are literally to the point of food stamps, you honestly would be a fool to continue. I blamed it on my job, on my line rate, on everything but the honest truth that I was ill and was NOT working as I should or could. It is a really sad thing that you keep spreading this propaganda that MTs in our culture are doomed and now destined for food stamps. Food stamps are not something to toss around lightly, as you would know if you ever had to use them. Please let's not be quite so dramatic. Again, if you are really in those dire straits, you really need to face that MTing is not the fit for you, personally, and do something about it rather than blame our industry. You dwell on the past, but we can't do that. While you may have made other wages 20 years ago, may I remind you that we were pounding away on IBM Selectrics using layers of paper and bottles of white out, going crazy trying to rewind tapes over and over to get that dang word, with no idea what an Expander was. Technology is fantastic. Things have changed, but things are still great in this industry, and in this world. Those who change and can adapt will be fine, but you need to recognize that most of us are not ready for food stamps.
Sure did...you been around for a long, long year

A gross line IS a gross line regardless if it's 90 characters long or 1 character long... SM

I'm very sorry that your lines are 90 characters line and you get paid by gross lines.  You are cheating yourself - that's not my fault.  You cannot change the definition of a gross line.  So I gues I'm not understanding what you are trying to say.  Now if you are trying to say that your line equals 90 characters and that's how you figure your lines, than you are not using gross lines.  You have defined a line to be 90 characters, whereas most MTSOs define a line as 65 characters.  If that is the case, then I must say again, you are cheating yourself.

So which is it, do you get paid by gross lines or by a 90 character line?

Thanks, I will give that a try:) nm

Give them whatever you
would give them at the "fairy tale" wedding.  The honeymoon may be over by next year.
hum, I might have to give it a try, then...

Don't give it up
I have been hurt severely on several occasions... and on occasion yes... a bit gun shy for the first period back in the saddle.  It does lessen and then goes away.  Just trust in your knowledge and your experience.  You have to trust your horse.  Just go slowly at first.  But do NOT give up.  That is the worst thing that you can do.  You have to face it and it slowly you will relax more.  Keep in mind that your horse will know/will feel your hesitancy and your fear.  In order for him/her to be relaxed, you must try to as well.  That is why going slowly at first will help regain your confidence.  Just around the ring maybe for a bit.... then a little more open.  Work yourself back up to your usual routine.  Good luck!
Thank you, will give a try

don't give up

There is no reason to give up just because you failed a test.  I have tested with a few companies and changed jobs a couple of times through my six years of transcribing.  I had no training either.  I had a very special family member who helped me out(she owned her own business).  I trained through the summer when I was in high school with her and by the time I was about 20 I was working part time with her.  Just because you are switching from tapes the computer based files doesn't mean that you can't do the work.  It may take a little time getting used to it, but there shouldn't be any reason to not be able to do the work.  Just like any other job, you may have to put in some applications at various places and go on interviews, and it may take some time, but you will eventually find a job.  As far as transcribing, I notice many places require either a c-phone or being able to install Express Scribe or a similar program on your computer.  If you don't have one, you can probably find a c-phone on ebay for around $200.  Just try to stay away from the larger MT companies and you should be okay.  I notice the smaller ones are easier to find a job with.

One can't give up a job, even a bad one,
that pays the bills, dead end or not. I think if this were me, I'd keep the job and take a better school that will mentor me into a job at the end of it. Nobody that I know would be able to give up a paying job to take on a mentored position for no pay. Another option would be to find a different job that is nights and do the free internship during the day. Either way you'd win in the end. Best of luck to you.
They will give you everything
When you order, they mail you the adapter that you need and since you have a router, you are good to go.
Okay, I give up.
It has no appeal. Just a job.
Give this a try...sm
Brown 1 pound hamburger and drain. Add 1 jar Prego spaghetti sauce, 1 8-oz can tomato sauce, 1/2 cup water. Simmer for 10 minutes or so.

Cut a loaf of French or Italian bread into 1-inch slices. Place in 1 layer on the bottom of a 13 x 9 pan.

Mix together 8 oz cream cheese (softened), 1/2 cup sour cream, and 2 tbsp of Hidden Valley Ranch dry dressing. Spread this over the bread. Sprinkle some parmesan cheese all over this. Sprinkle half of an 8 oz bag shredded mozarella over the parmesan.

Pour the spaghetti sauce mix on top. Sprinkle some more parmesan and the rest of the mozarella cheese on top.

Bake for about 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
Thanks, I'm going to give that a try
when I'm working and for sleeping. The doctor tells me that it is important to keep everything moving to avoid getting too stiff; however, I do think I need to try a soft neck collar or rolled up towel as you suggested especially when working. I think that may really help take some of the stress off. I will be talking to my therapist about it when I go as well. Thanks so much for the tip!
Did I ask you to give up ANYTHING!!??
Nope!  If you want to ride all over town burning up expensive gasoline and putting wear and tear on your car, with your fingers on the steering wheel instead of on the keyboard making $$$, be my guest.  Now let me guess Patty - next you're going to tell us that you don't drive a car, you ride a bike or scoooter instead to and from your doctor's offices and you're so fast on the keyboard that it doesn't matter you spend four hours out of the day riding up and down the interstate weaving in and out of traffic picking up and delivering, you still make the same amount!  HAH!
