How do you all clean your keyboards? SM

I eat and drink at my desk, as I'm sure most of us do.  And of course, crumbs fall, drinks drip, and there's the dust.  I was just wondering what everybody else uses to clean their keyboards.  I have tried canned air to blow out the crumbs and then use alcohol on the surface and stick Q-Tips down in all the crevices and between the keys.  Just wondered if there was some miracle solution that would make it easier and less time consuming?

Anyone know what OEM means? Looking at keyboards to buy & there are some MS 4000 keyboards advertise
anyone have a clue?
These keyboards are designed after the original IBM keyboards that
have the "clicky, audible sound" when pressing the keys - not the hushed, soft, nonexistent touch & feel of the newer keyboards.
Think it depends on what you've learned on & "typed" on as to your preference regarding touch, sound feedback, etc.
When my original IBM keyboard was going on the blitz(1995),I searched far & wide for a company to repair such and/or replace it. This company has repaired such - several times. This company does offer clones of the original IBM that are very comparable to the original. They also have other keyboards available made by their company, but I have no personal knowledge as to their touch, etc.
As a side note, this company will repair most model keyboards for a very nomimal fee if you have a favorite you don't want to part with - ask for Jim Owens - he's a doll-babe !!
I know this company makes several of their own keyboards, but what I believe mdlfcrs is referring to is not known to the newer transcriptionists. In other words, the keyboard she/he and I are talking about is not ergonomic, soft-touch or mushy feeling. It goes back to the days of the typewriter - you heard it, you felt the keys - a totally different feeling compared to most "computer keyboards" -
clean
I already thought of that, but I hear they aren't worth crap.
sometimes have to clean
you know you can take the ball out and clean it? If not, turn mouse over and twist plate direction of arrows.
have you tried the can of air to clean it?
this is a post I just read:

My Microsoft Digital Media Pro keyboard is quite nice. The keys are all attached to the front of the keyboard. Just unscrew the back and the front lifts up with all the keys. On the bottom part of the keyboard remains the rubber/silicon and circuit board, which can be sprayed off. I then submerge the top keyboard in scalding hot soapy water to clean it.
Nothing to do with MT but does anyone have any ideas on how to clean - sm
a linoleum bathroom floor? All my bathroom throw rugs (4-large bathroom) have left yellow stains under where each lies.  I presume the rubber somehow reacted with the floor.  This has happened in both my bathrooms but much worse it the one which has a window.  Short of replacing the floor does anyone have any ideas? TIA.
Let's clean up our board........sm
While it is certainly everyone's right to "agree to disagree", the mud slinging that unfortunately takes place here is usually not started by anyone who truly wants to get a point across.  I myself have gotten into some very heated discussions over issues related to our profession. But I've never stooped so low as to attack anyone personally.. and the minute the discussion starts getting ugly, I'm outta there!  There are people on these boards with no other purpose than to see where they can start trouble.  They're just looking for attention and the only way to get rid of them is to totally ignore them.
Help! How do I clean out my cache?

I have been unable to access, since last night, a website (Weightwatchers.com) and/or its forums that I go to regularly. I have friends that are able to access it so I am wondering what I might need to do to "clean things out" on my computer in order to get back to the web site.

TIA.

Any way to clean up a BAD dss file??

Doctor dictated despite the fact that he had a tremendously BAD phone connection.  I can only hear a word every few sentences, the rest is loud humming and static.  I have a KOSS equalizer that didn't help at all.  Anyone know of a miracle program or something that might salvage this recording, as he doesn't want to re-dictate it?  THanks!

Does anyone pay someone to clean their house? sm
If so how often do they clean for you and how much do you pay them?   What size home do you have? i.e. 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room, dining room and kitchen?
Always a dishcloth and use a clean

one every time.  Right now we are without a dishwasher.  I use a dishcloth for dishes and a dishcloth to clean countertops/table  - or will sometimes use a paper towel.  I also use bleach or an antibacterial cleaner about once a week.

Never, ever use a sponge.  If you use a scrub brush need to at least dip in bleach every day that you use it.

I can't remember where it was, but in the last couple of months I saw a show like 60 minutes and it was talking about how dirty a kitchen is, especially in comparison to your bathroom, and it was enough to make you sick, in more ways than one.

I need help to keep my house clean. What should I pay?
Am thinking 10.00/hr cash of course. Is that too low? My house just needs maintenance (floors, dusting, countertops).
I third the Mr. Clean Eraser. nm

clean environment
Everyone is making great points and I appreciate your comments, truly!  But, paying a few more thousand dollars for a hybrid car isn't really a big deal to me, as I know I am doing my part to help reduce the dependency on foreign oil and also these hybrids reportedly are so much better for the environment as far as pollution.  That is really the reason why I'm leaning towards it, as well as the increased miles per gallon.  Thanks for your opinions!
You have to clean 3 rollers...sm

or you can do what I did, I waited until the Logitech mouse (originally was about $70) came down in price to about $20 or $24 and bought one.  You never have to clean them inside and you don't need a mousepad.

I used to clean houses when I sm
needed extra money.  We got behind in bills a couple of times due to illnesses, surgeries, etc. I put an ad in the paper and picked up several jobs that way.
Put them on probation and tell them to clean up their act or they
are gone. Too many MTs are looking for work right now to put up with people who don't/won't do their job.
How do I clean my keyboard?

My keyboard is getting nasty down under the keys.  The vacuum used to do the trick, but now some dust, crumbs, and Lord knows what else remains in the bottom of the tray.  If I unscrew the screws on the bottom, will that allow me to lift the top off?

I figured I would ask, because I often do things like that only to end up with the wrong part coming off or nothing at all happens.  (I hate that.)

Any tips appreciated!

I just clean mine with...
a good upside-down shake, a clean paintbrush for between the keys, and a soft cloth with a little gentle cleaner of water with a splash of vinegar and hydrogen peroxide for the top.
Heck, I can't even keep my sink clean

And I hate shoes. I guess I need to be more dedicated. Just working on my hot spots every day would do me a world of good.

And then they'll have clean up poopoo
nm
Do you have a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser???
I don't know if it will work, because thank God neither one of mine have ever done that before, but it does clean a lot of stuff, from walls, to white sneaker, the bathtub.
Do the first account first, clean it out, then move on
x
I do that, too. I don't like to shower first to power clean
the house because then you get all sweaty with cleaning chemicals all over.
Mr. Clean Magic Eraser - use dry nm
nm
I'm with you. I hate to clean and really don't have time (sm)

I work 7 days a week and used to have a gal come in twice a week until the place got back to normal....then once every 2 weeks after that. Had to pay $10/hour, so had to work twice as hard to pay her.

Finally had to let her go in September last year and the place hasn't been the same since.  Trying to get my savings back up so I can hire somebody again.  I have no closets but 1 in the whole house and no place to hang coats, etc.

I cleaned really good last week and was surprised it only took me 3 hours, but that's 3 hours I could be making money to save up to hire somebody. Everyone in this area are private people. There are no services like Merry Maids.

I second the Mr. Clean eraser motion
My son recently got black permanent marker on my wooden kitchen table . . . amazingly, the magic eraser rubbed it right off. I have used them for textured surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom before also and they "work like magic".
what do you use to clean computer screen?
can i use lens cleaner like for my eyeglasses? alcohol?   thanks.
Wiping the computer clean
Hi, I have a computer that is about 5-6 years old, and I no longer use it.  I want to clean all my data off it so that if it ends up in someone else's hands none of my confidential MT work is on it.  When I bought the computer, my hard drive had two partitions; one for the restore to factory settings and one for my use.  I took my computer with me to an MT company for training, and they wiped out my partition that had my restore information on it.  I hadn't made a copy on a disk, so I no longer have that as an option.  Can I simply reformat my hard drive to wipe everything clean?  I don't really care if that wipes out the OS too.
Yes, you can format it and wipe it clean. nm

I am constantaly having trouble with the letters being worn off -- have been through 4 keyboards in the past two years -- any suggestions, though I know where the keys are, it looks funny when they are blank.

Thanks.

Jen, did you call about the keyboards? Anything I found said that Cirque is no longer in business, and when I went to the other site, found only the pads, not the keyboards. The original looks wonderful. If you find where it can be purchased, let us know.
Keyboards
Once upon a time, I used one of those split keyboards.  Considering buying one again.  Does anyone use one?  How does it compare over the longterm?
Keyboards

It didn't take any time at all to get used to the GoldTouch in the tented position.  I bought mine off of ebay and am keeping my eyes open for another one, cheap, to have as a back-up.

I have a COuntoured keyboard that I bought off Ebay. I have had it for a month or 2 but just havent had the time to work with it.  It seems kind of complicated to get set up.  The Goldtouch, I plugged into a USB port and off I went.

I have seen and bid on all kinds of keyboards. They even have one handed one that resemble the top of a job stick.  One hand does it all.  And there are ones called Bats (I think) that are everything done by one hand.  I am trying to buy one of those kinda cheap.

ALso, I have tried Dragon Naturally Speaking but the time to train it took too long.  It was quicker to type.

Keyboards

I have no idea when I will be trying that out but can let you know.  If I lose your email I will post that I have tried it.  It looks to me like it is going to be like when you spell something out on the telephone.  So many clicks per number to get a certain letter.

I have never had trouble buying anything off ebay.  I have seen new and used keyboards.  Mine have all been used but I always check the stats on the seller to see that history.  Also pay with PayPal so would have that as a recouse also if had problems.  And of course, I save all correspondence, etc, not just for ebay but any kind of cyber transcactions.

Hi Anna, check out this website. http://office-ergo.com/12things2.htm I searched for Ergonomics on google, and came up with a ton of sites. Hope this helps.
Keyboards - sm
I am a keyboard snob.  I only use mechanical keyboards (which are usually older keyboards).  They have the "click" that comes from the spring action making connection.  My preferences are Magitronic, Keytronic,  or (best) NMB.  These keyboards have "sliders" that make typing a joy.  The older IBM M keyboard is also mechanical action, but I find the keys rather harder to type on.  I like a clicky, soft touch mechanical-action keyboard.  I usually buy them on ebay - some are rather expensive, some are cheap - all are old and all are mechanical action!
keyboards
I had a Kensington keyboard that I bought I think at Comp USA, somewhere more than 3 years ago.  It was not really expensive, and didn't have a split keyboard, but had slanted keys, which I thought were quite a bit easier to use and I really liked it.  The letters didn't wear off, and it was working fine until I dumped a whole glass of diet orange pop on it about a month ago.  A whole glass, that is, except what went all over my desk and the wall.  I took it all apart, rinsed everything out, set it out in the sun to dry well, put all the little rubber dothingies back in place on each key, and have a keyboard that doesn't work anymore.  Sigh.  I would buy another one just like it, and hope to find one as soon as I can stop putting money in other things, like furnace repairs.
Keyboards
I have bought some of the best and the longest they last is 6 to 8 months witout starting to come off.  So I buy a new keyboard about every 12 to 15 months as it also looses its bounce.   Guess that comes with doing 45,000 to 50,000 lines per month but you would think that they would make them so that they last a little longer.
Keyboards
I have this problem as well and was told by Dell tech support that it is the grease on the fingers, i.e, lotion, eating while working etc that makes the letters wear off. I have gone through 6 keyboards in 2 years and now I put clear finger nail polish on the keys and this has worked thus far.  You must do this prior to using the new keyboard first, as in no greasy fingers.
RE: Keyboards
I use the Microsoft Wireless Natural Multimedia Keyboard and it is wonderful. Love it. I don't use the shift key on the right either apparently.
Keyboards - sm
I have tried all three, and always go back to the Maxium. The Goldtouch was too loud and cumbersome. I could not get use to the Freestyle, but love the Maxium. If you decide on one, and I have the Goldtouch in my computer closet I would sell you...email if interested.
KEYBOARDS

I agree about what a difference the keyboard can make!!

I looked at the split keyboards, but my hands are kind of small so I went with a WAVE keyboard.

It is made by Logitech and you can find it at Office Max and Staples.  It is wireles and came in a combo with a wirless mouse for about $75.  It has well paid for itself!! for me!

About trying out keyboards

About the keyboard advice previously given, when you try them out, can you tell you like them right away or do they all feel a bit awkward?  I'm just wondering how to know what I'll like best when picking one out.

Thanks for your ongoing help!

Keyboards I tried out

I looked at keyboards yesterday and tried them (pretended to type) in the store.  The ones they had with each hand's keys father apart (which is what I thought would be best) were big, bulky, with keys that stuck up too high and just felt awkward.  The one that felt best was smaller ... more in order of a normal keyboard but curved a bit to accommodate more natural hand position.

Do you think this is an accurate assessment of what would work best for me, or would one get more used to the other type?  Are there split keyboards that don't seem so bulky and awkward from the start?

Thanks.  I really want a new keyboard, but I'm afraid I'll buy something I regret.  Just not sure how to tell what's best.

keyboards
I've been an MT for over 20 years and my shoulders and arms are feeling starting to feel it. I've been using a MS ergo keyboard for years now, but would like to invest is a super good keyboard. Anyone have one you particularly like? Anyone try one of those keyboards where you type sideways? TIA
keyboards

I have narrowed my selection of new keyboards down to the Microoft Natural Wireless 7000 and the Logitech cordless.  I need speed and comfort. I will test drive each but until I do does anyone have any comments on either of these keyboards?  TIA

i own like 5 keyboards
--for some reason, I don't know! I only use one for work. I must be a pack rat. I don't know about the locked keys, my idea was that one key was stuck, but she said the number keys work. I don't know whats up with that unless you have another keyboard hooked up with something pressing down on those keys.
Clorox Clean-Up and Dow Scrubbing Bubbles
and of course, there's always good ole Comet!
My family probably thinks elves clean up after them - sm
As I try to do all the picking up, etc. after everyone is in bed. Granted I can't vacuum then but most of the junk is picked up and put away, including the laundry. My husband wants to hire someone, I really don't want a stranger in my house though. Also my husband fails to understand that they will not pick up his dirty clothes, or put his stuff away where it belongs, etc., and that you actually have to straighten up a bit before someone comes in to clean for you. What he wants is a maid who will do what I won't!....maybe after we win the Mega Millions, right?
No self-respecting prostitute would clean someone's toilet either
Such low expectations. Sad.
