write offs/deductions for IC's??

Just wanting some ideas on what everyone uses as deductions.  Im going to get hit hard this year and just seeing what everyone else does.

TIA,

I don't pay more taxes. I have write-offs.

You have to decide that for yourself. Write-offs,

After I do my write-offs it's more like 10% - I think 30% is on the "conservative" side of
you don't owe. They have practice sheets you can do that will help you figure it out. Do a dry run using those and that will give you a better idea.

As an independent contractor, where can I go to get a list of what I can write off legally when working from home?

TIA.

how do you find the line count
in word 2007. Am i just having a senior moment? I can't find this,,,,,
If you don't take the time to find to do things

that give you joy you'll become a bitter old woman and you'll always have regrets that you gave so much of yourself to your job.

My mother died of cancer, she fought it for 17 years, but she was just 50 when she got it and the chemo damaged her heart so that she had no quality of life and she wanted to go to the beach one more time.

My father worked hours and hours, OT and weekends, and neglected his family, not out of financial need - not sure why exactly.  He developed Alzheimer's in his early 60s, was not able to enjoy retirement and it didn't matter that he had $100,000 in the bank because he didn't know who he was, didn't know who I was, was in diapers, couldn't feed himself, etc.

Make the time to do what you enjoy, if only for 15 minutes a day.  If $$ is an issue, use coupoons, buy off brands, shop yard sales, etc.

You can work until you last breath and they'll still be calling you to help with the backlog.   The company doesn't care about you, doesn't care if your children are sick, if your parents are dying, if you are puking your guts out, so why should you kill yourself for the company.

The only things that I find silly

about the Safetype are the price and the 12% restocking fee for returns (not to mention shipping costs to and possibly fro).  More like ridiculous!

I looked at many, many keyboards during my search for an alternative, but I was looking more for an alternative to the mouse, and I found it.  Not to be redundant, as I posted about this a week or so ago and have posted about it before, but  I LOVE MY ALPHAGRIP!!!    It's a match made in heaven!  The cost is a third of Safetype, and  some of the others that offer similar hand positioning are up to $400 dollars or more.  With the AlphaGrip, at least there is no restocking charge if you decide to return it within the 30-day timeframe allowed.

I love mine so much that I just recently purchased another one!  Not because the first was defective, but because I s tu pid ly spilled coffee on the first one .  It still worked and I used it for a while after that, but the keys became harder to press and it was too much of a workout.

As I mentioned in my previous posts, it does look complicated, but I found it very easy to learn to use, what with all the helpful information and tools provided on their site.

That said, I have (quite some time ago) seen several posts from people here that use keyboards similar to the Safetype and were happy with them.  I've included the link for the AlphaGrip below in case you want to check it out.  It looks like they decided to change the name to the iGrip, which I am not too happy about, but I guess a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, and I'm sure the name doesn't change anything about this product either, but I still prefer to call it an AlphaGrip!

Scribe - How do I find my line count?

I am working on a platform called Scribe.  Does anyone know how to find their line counts in this program? Thanks

What I think is so sad is that people may give up good jobs to go there to find out these things all
to late. The newbies can learn and use MQ and move on which they do but of course the clients suffer then with all the people learning on them but this is what MQ causes and when they lose clients with poor quality or people that just throw out work then they caused their own problems. You cant keep good MTs with no work I dont care what incentives you offer because they mean nothing with no work ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I wish people would understand that when MQ hires them.
Buy if from your husband. Have him write you a receipt. Write it off completely or
depreciate it over a few years.
lay offs .. yep .. me too.

I was greeted at the door this morning and walked to the office. Received my sererance package and then was allowed to clean out my desk.

When one door closes, another door opens. I kinda felt like I would be in this cut, hoping I wouldn't, but felt like it.

Good thing DH tuns 65 in July. Guess I'll have to start checking out medical insurance now.

Soooo if it's alright with you guys, I'll just hang out with you for a while.

Lay Offs

Boy this must be the week.  I myself was also told on Monday that I was laid off from my hospital job I just started 5 months ago.  I think they just used me to clean up their mess of backlog.  I was very sad the first day, but then realized they did me a favor. No more working 10-6:30 shift and on Sundays, which I hated. My husband was happy. I am going to get unemployment so I can enjoy the summer months for the first time in about 10 years. It is going to be great.
As they say everything is for a reason. We may not see it now but we will later down the road.  I think this is a blessing for me.  They were always hounding me to get my line count.  I never had acute care experience and only did clinic notes for 5 years but they hired me and I was always short 50-100 a day.  I feel a huge pressure off my back.  I felt like I worked in a factory.  I never took a lunch and I feared if my doorbell rang or phone because I did not have a minute to spare or my line count would suffer.  No one should have to work like this and I will never.  My next transcription job is going to be like before on a 24 hour turnaround.  I am not working set hours ever again.

Keep the faith- God always closes a door but opens a window and I have always believed this.

HUGS and love!!

Lay-offs

My job ended the end of December as a receptionist in a doctors, which lead me to going to MT school that starts the end of this month. And now you all are talking about getting layed-off from your mt jobs. scary, what is up ?

Lay-offs
Not what I wanted to hear, but thanks for the info.
DirecWay Drop-offs
Thanks for the tip. It looks like Direcway has a new upgrade from the 6000 model...more money of course. I will need to do something, as 3 days at half-production is just too miserable.
Direcway satellite drop-offs all day...
Is anyone else having problems with their satellite connection this week?  After 6 months of no problems I am now getting constant drop-offs until 5 p.m.  I am on the west coast and no weather problems.  I have called "customer service," but that was beyond frustrating.  Dial-up is excruciating to work with after being used to the high-speed.  Thanks in advance for any info.
Sounds like any old pair of cut offs would be acceptable....

The description reminds me of my MUCH older brother's wedding circa 1973.... She was barefoot, he was in ripped jean cut off shorts, the preacher looked like something that crawled out from under a rock, and when he asked my brother if he had anything to say, he "grunted."  Gawd, it was awful.  I'm sure this wedding you're going to won't be that bad, but if the bride is barefoot and the groom is in khakis, then any decide informal summery outfit would probably be A-ok.

Speaking of rip-offs, anyone have any advise on how to get back money paid for a product you never
received?  I needed a Dictaphone C-phone for my job (was using a loaner) and put a note on the equipment board pertaining to this back in May.  A woman contacted me stating she had one for $100 (I only needed the phone, power supply and phone cord).  She said she was going away for 3 weeks and to Western Union the money to her that night and she'd send it out the next day.  I did not like the high pressure and was still shopping around anyway so I told her I'd wait the 3 weeks and contact her then.  About a week later she emailed me stating she cut her trip short but was going away again that Friday (It was Tuesday), I had by this time decided to buy her phone.  I mailed out that day via Priority mail a M.O. for $100.  She was very anxious for the money, and thought I'd sent it Express Mail, which I of course informed her I did not.  She stated that it should be there by Friday and if she did not see her mail that day that she'd have her mom check the mail and then mail the C-phone to me.  After 2 weeks I emailed her as I had no phone as yet, no response.  A week later still no phone, emailed again, no response. Then I called her (looked it up) and she claimed her email was "broken" and she had not received my emails but would email me back as she was on her way out the door to a baseball game.  I asked her how can she email me back if it was broken??? So then she backpedaled and said she'd call me.... I held my breath at that point.  So the next day by some miracle I get an email from her stating her mother had mailed it regular mail, no way to track it, etc.  So supposedly it is lost.  I emailed her back which it appeared she did not get as she did not respond to my questions but she did email me again saying she'd return my money.....again I am holding my breath.  That was 8 days ago.  She is in OK, I am in VA.  If she sent me a refund promptly it would have been here by now.  Now when I call her, she does not pick up, and no answering machine either.  I am planning now to mail her a copy of her email and my response to getting my money back.  I am assuming at this point that I was taken for a sucker and was obviously too trusting.  Right now I don't have $100 to burn (who does?) with my drives to the hospital (60 miles round trip) for my daughter's chemo, doctor visits, etc, on top of only making about 1/2 what I used to make due to the changes in my life right now.  In the meantime I got kicked off the account for which I needed the C-phone for (add insult to injury here) due to problems at the company I was working for, so that does not sweeten my disposition any.  So does anyone have any idea how I can squeeze her and get my money back?  Contact the police there for fraud? Small claims court in OK?  I am a persistent pain in the butt and will keep at her until I get my money back, if it is fraud then she picked the wrong person to screw with, if it is on the up and up then it is unfortunate but she should have insured it to cover her own (and mine) butt, and sent in with a delivery confirmation too....but you know what they say about hindsight.  Any ideas???
Take the character count divded by 65 and that will give you your line count.
x
it does not count gross lines...I count 37 and it counts 67.
x
Bad things? what bad things? people's being petty and small?
x
Nope, not a higher count. Actually, the count is the same...
I use a word count and not a line count, but because you mentioned it, I ran a few documents using line count, and the count is exactly the same. However, Flashcount has a lot of nifty features.  I like it.  :)
go to chat room on web site and find out. i'm working but if you find out, let me know.
creepy dude.
I find most of my abbreviations here. Scroll all the way down until you find the abbreviation box.

You need to watch your line count. I was working for them and got reports that had line count of 0 in them. They did not pay for templates, they would deduct the template even if it was not used and deleted. I notified them and said they could not change it.

So I asked to be put on another account and they refused. I quit.

I was also promised they would have an incentive plan going into place if you type a certain # of lines. Two years went by and nothing.

I was really disappointed in OSI.

They also offered to pay half on joint AAMT, which they failed to do.

I am glad I am no longer there.

Why would you write someone up
gee that is very encouraging, I have been disciplined even with my current job when I was in the mentor program but not written up !!!!! That style of company is not for me, I should have listened to the posts of how they are sweet and than watch out... I'm sure a lot of people are happy with them they seem to have a lot of employees
I just had to write this....
I am now one week free from my best friend is what I like to call smoking.. This was difficult to give up and for the first time in my life I sat in a nonsmoking section at a restaurant yesterday, I can run a mile, I am alert and awake and feel good, my skin is actually looking younger.  I have attempted to quite many many times... The conclusion to this was its my body, I control my body, cigarettes do not control me, I control me, God gives us one body enjoy it, take care of it, REMEMBER ITS YOUR BODY... Sorry if this offends anyone I just needed to voice myself for I feel free for the first time in my Life....
Do you write down your (sm)

job numbers.  How do you keep record of work completed each day?

They need to write one about MTs
Synthroid 25 mg --hello? I have to change that one all the time. Or how about clonidine for anxiety? Or one of my personal faves respiratory rate 70, heart rate 16...happens all the time. Ladies give yourselves a pat on the back for fixing and "spotting" all of THEIR mistakes!
to write or not to write
I have always put on my resumes that I have the ability to transcribe foreign accented physicians and never had any comment made about it, so guess it worked for me.  The QA part, would state as you suggested, experienced in quality assurance....would look oh so pretty on the resume by all means.  Good luck.
You can write off anything you want to, you just have to
be able to document it if you get audited.  I would have DSL if I didn't need it for work and my whole family uses the internet so I can't in good faith write it off.  Even if I wouldn't have it if not needed for work I'm sure you still use it for personal use.
Why you should write it down
The purpose to keeping a log of everything you do that is not actual transcription, i.e., is not typing to generate lines, is to show you how much time you spend not-working.

This can be a considerable amount of time. It's important to get a handle on it, though, because it goes a long way toward showing you where you can become more efficient.

Awareness of the "not-work" time -- I hesitate to call it wasted, because some of it is purposeful, even if it doesn't generate income -- is necessary if you are to control it.

Nearly everybody pops up out of the seat if it is a difficult dictator. When I code something difficult, I jump right up and find all sorts of errands to run. It's much easier to stay in the seat and stay focused if you are aware that you keep leaping up to run around.

Even taking a sip of coffee takes a few seconds. Looking away to the TV takes a split second here and there. Answering the phone takes a couple more. Pretty soon it's a whole minute, then an hour. If you have one hour a day in non-income-generating activities, if you made $10 per hour, you'd lose $10 a day, $50 a week, $200 a month, $2400 a year. Double that if you made $20 per hour.

:)
Tax write off

Anyone know if we can write off our losses in the stock market last year.  I have no clue as I have always made money.  I sure my accountant is busy or I would call him.  Just curious, as my hubby took a big hit, should have listened to the bunionmeister.    Listen next time hubby.

We should ALL write them &

tell them why we don't want to be members.  Seriously - although the following quote comes to mind:

I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member - Groucho Marx

Oohhh, I like that. I'm going to write that down!! Thanks!! nm
..
You can only write off the percentage actually used...
for work.  Who uses 40% of the space in their house???  I write off 10-15%.  You also must use that work area for work only.  Come audit time (and it eventually may happen), you will need to show a floorplan of your house and what area is for work exclusively.  If you're writing off 40% you will be in deep doo-doo.
Proper way to write

You have it write Broke!!!
You are exactly right. Ooooh let me buy that huge TV or put a brand new Lexus in the driveway. please. Christmas is about giving not about receiving and it is not about giving presents. It is our time and our love that is needed most, especially this time of year. We do the same here. Make presents for each other, make the decorations for the tree, donate our time and our money to those who need it. Soup kitchens, Salvation Army, local homeless shelters, etc, etc. We have never "not" been able to afford going crazy on Christmas presents for our own families, but really just never wanted. Our entire family feels it is much more important to spend on those who most need our help. Kudos for you and a very merry Christmas!!!!!!
Better yet...write a book...
Merry Christmas
I have done both and prefer IC because I can write
everything off. You have to be very diligent about receipts and setting aside tax money though.

The only real difference in pay between the two is 7.25% for social security (self employment. You have to put aside the taxes rather than have the company pay them for you but either way, that tax money comes out of your check not the company's pocket.
Mine was before I became an MT. I used to have to write

a lot, using a lot of fine motor grip, took maybe 2 years.  Typing doesn't bother me unless I do a 12 hour day, but then with rest it is usually better.

I suggest wearing a splint/splints to bed because you may bend your wrists in your sleep and that will contribute to the problem.  Keeping them straight really helps.  My orthopod recommended 15 minute soaks - cold, hot, and then cold again.

I recommend lowering your keyboard tray if possible and putting a pillow in your lap and then the keyboard on your pillow.  This helps take a lot of the stress off.  I also find that I sit straighter with my back pressed against the back of my chair.   If that doesn't work for you put a towel, folded at least once, under your keyboard on your tray and that will help take some of the stress off also, though not as much as the pillow.  If you use a normal-sized bed pillow there is enough pillow to also rest your wrists on and to me is just more comfortable than having an edge of  the wrist pad.  I couldn't get used to a gel one.   If you are using a mouse have it on your keyboard tray where you don't have to bend your wrist as much to use it.

There are vitamins/supplements that are supposed to help  too.  I'm sorry I can't remember when they are but you can Google it.

My last surgery was 17 years ago and I find that when I grip things, like a rake when doing yard work that my wrists hurt, but it doesn't hurt when I type, different muscles I guess.   I have lost some strength in my hand.  I was the one that always opened the jars no one else could and now I'm not able to open them.

Whatta Re-write!
Weird AL Yankovic could not have done a better re-write. ROFLOL!!!!   Priceless, just priceless.  Good job!
