get away from the constant harrassment there. I'm now making 9.5 cpl, and even though it's higher than most nationals, it's still very, very low. I can't imagine how anyone who is single can support themselves on less than that.

After paying on my truck and house for a year I can
refinance and get an interest rate that is close to someone who has never filed bankruptcy before. So, the high interest rate won't be there forever and at least I will have assets rather than renting or not having a car at all. So, bankruptcy in my case was the best option.

I disagree with the hourly rate. I like to know that I get paid for the amount that I produce. It would really be hard to regulate an hourly scale. If you feel bad now how would you feel knowing that someone is goofing off or typing slower or whatever and getting the same rate of pay that you get? I have a couple of subs and I know about how long it takes to do one of the psych reports but how could I know what that person is doing. I really think that the hospitals/accounts would have a problem with this especially with us working at home. Also how could we clock in and out at an hourly rate. I am a pretty trusting person and trustworthy but there are times I stop and take a break and go to this board, etc. That is why they went to the per line charge.
And yes, I can do 2500 lines per day. For one account last month I had them keep track of the errors that they found and it was 5 out of 10,.973 lines for that month. So I feel I do a good job but if I were to go to hourly I would lose money as with this account it takes me about 30 to 35 hours a month with delivery, printing, etc. to make $1100 to 1200 a month. They would not pay me $35 to 40 an hour.
Hourly or Per Line?
I personally would be willing to go back to an hourly rate and be a company employee again. I know I will never make the $22/hour I made in the 1980s. However, my daughter is a receptionist in a surgeon's office and she makes over $18/hour. I would like to believe that we would make at least an hourly wage comparable to that.
I know I would be willing to settle for $15 to $18 an hour if I was on the company payroll and getting benefits as the OP is.
Wonder if the local physicians think they are getting ripped off by the per line rate and would consider switching to an hourly employee on their payroll? I would like to think that. These are just some of my thoughts on the subject.
Hourly vs. per line
Hourly pay is better if you can get it, because you never know what kind of transcript you'll run into or number of corrections you have to do. OTOH, even though I am paid hourly to do QA I tell myself my "base rate" is 3-4 cpl and I monitor the number of lines per hour I average, just to keep myself on track and keep myself from wasting my and my employer's time on wild goose chases (I tend to be highly obsessive about finding obscure terms, and the Internet has no end!).
I would never accept less than 3 cpl for QA or editing, and would certainly try to secure more than that. JMO.
Nothing. Never take line rate for editing. Take hourly only.
You will never make any money by the line editing if you are doing true editing.
QA Pay Preference -- hourly versus per line? SM
I've been offered two QA jobs; one that pays $15 per hour and one that pays 4 cpl. I'm told that I can make more than $15 per hour on production because you get credit for all lines in a report, even if you make only one correction. So I figured that to make the equivalent of $15 per hour, I would have to QA 3000 lines a day. So here's my question, is 3000 lines of QA in an 8 hour day feasible and is it possible to do more lines than that in an 8 hour day?
Both offer employee status, benefits, etc. Benefit plans are pretty much exactly the same down to the same health insurance company.

I get it. They are paying the indians 1 or 2 cents a line,
which isn't much to us but it is to them, and then they just pay QA people a few cents more a line to edit the crap that comes back (probably no worse than correcting some ASR) and there ya go. $$$$$

Before you get too excited, most hourly QA jobs have a line count quota too.
so if you had trouble getting quota as an MT, it could be that you might not make it as a QA either.
Can a company "trick" you into paying you by the 65 character line by
stating 9 cents per 65 character line in writing, but you don't get paid for spaces? I heard rumors about this particular company that they don't pay for spaces and so I'm wondering about this. I suppose I could call and ask them, but was wondering about that. Thanks. What's been your experience about pay, if you have one?
As a company, I have no problem paying 10 cents a line. Why is it that you do?

I'm paid hourly and I was told the requirement was 50 or more reports per day. I've never worked QA per line, but I'm sure their line quota is pretty high, at least 2000 or better per day, as you get credit for every line in every report you QA.

We had a war with Earthlink over this. It was their responsibility to contact Bell South about the problem, but they said it was our responsibility (we have a DSL line). We finally dropped them and went right to Bell South. Everything was fine for a while and then the problems returned. The service tech played a hunch and checked the underground wiring in a hub(some green box about a block away) and that was problem. He took care of the wiring and the problem has never returned.
Along the same line, does anyone do coding at home or only in house? Does it pay well? nm

given the chance. I re-read my previous post to you and I sounded like a b*tch and I wanted to apologize. You sound like a very positive person who takes criticism and not so pleasant advice very diplomatically.
If your problems with your boss are more of a personal nature, rather than the quality or quantity of your work, I would maybe go over her head. You already have an adversarial relationship with her anyway, so why not get it on record that you feel she is treating you unfairly? Or maybe confront her yourself? I would probably do the latter. I'm not someone that can bite my tongue which probably explains why I work by myself at a computer all day rather than in customer service! 
Just an FYI, I actually am starting an in-house MT job at a hospital tomorrow! I've decided that if they try to lay me off in favor of outsourcing, I'm just going to refuse. I'm going say "nope, I'm sorry, I refuse to be laid off. I'm going to get back to work now." I wonder what they would do?

so because of how you are paid (not an hourly rate) you don't get OT, especially if you are an IC.
What are you paying your MTs? If you're only paying 7 or 8 cpl
and expecting extremely experienced MTs, forget it. You're not going to get it. If, however, you're willing to pay 9 or more cpl then you will find what you're looking for. There ARE experienced MTs out there who will work their fingers to the bone IF they are compensated well and treated with respect.

The doctors who are supposedly training for transcription have degrees in ayurvedic medicine and homeopathy. Neither has much to do with western medicine. And, can they type? Some of this sounds like bluster to me.

Low Pay for Transcriptionists
I am 57 and have been transcribing for 28 years. I recently moved from California to South Carolina. I was doing VERY well there working in a clinic, but since moving here I am living at the poverty level. Even with my experience they started me at $ 10.00 an hour. I've checked all hospitals in the area and none pay any better. This is very disappointing. I've applied all over the place, and nobody seems interested. And working for 7 to 8 cents for a 65 character line is like giving your time away for nothing and 3 to 5 cents per line for editing. At 57 I am in bad health, have spent my life transcribing, and don't know how to do anything else. I plan to enroll in school in the fall to learn a different trade.

A gross line is anything on a line is a line. A line set at 65 characters means it sm
has 1-inch margins on each side. The maximum number of characters on that line would be 65 and that includes spaces. If there is 1 character on that line it is a line.
A standard 65-character line usually consists of 65 characters with spaces unless, of course, the employer does not pay for spaces and then it would be 65-characters without spaces.

Retiring transcriptionists
I retired at age 62 after sixteen full time years and twenty part and full time years. I worked in a fast-paced institution doing all types of transcription. Believe me it took a toll on my hands and wrists. I now suffer burning tendinitis in my right wrist with deQuervain tendinitis in my thumb.
Veterinary Transcriptionists??
Does anyone transcribe for a vet? How did you get in to this area of transcription? It sounds like it would be interesting. Maybe they just have their secretaries transcribe. Thoughts on this.

Ophthalmology transcriptionists out there?
Any other MTs doing ophthalmology? I'm working for docs who are on the east coast. I get so FRUSTRATED because the reports are so short I feel like I'm starting and stopping all the time. I've done 33 files today for a whopping 600-ish lines! Great docs, easy to understand, mainly letters to the PCPs. Most of my files are easily less than 3 minutes long and when I do get a long one, he can't make up his mind so I end up erasing and retyping, and STILL don't get a decent line count.
Just looking for a sympathetic ear from another Ophth MT. I feel like I'm in a different world than these other guys I read about on here!

I worked with one where we were paid $25 an hour - he would come in on Saturday and Sunday and milk the clock for 12-16 hours when there was only about 1-2 hours of work. This went on for a couple of years. Then I had another male MT as a supervisor and he was very nice and has always helped me to find work when I needed it. Different strokes for different folks.

Transcriptionists are smart!
I had a doctor say to his "residents" that they should do transcription because I was answering all of the questions they could not, just because I've transcribed for so many years! That was kind of a nice feeling, if I do say so myself! So... maybe we could all be doctors some day! 
Transcriptionists that do not know punctuation
I just had a dictation in which the doctor specified (correctly) where the quotation marks were in relation to the period at the end of the sentence and stated that he was tired of having to correct reports where it was incorrectly placed. I was aghast! How could anybody transcribe and not know elementary punctuation?

EMR will not reduce the need for transcriptionists
What we do at our office is we transcribe the reports and they are scanned into the EMR - the only difference is there is not an actual paper chart anymore.

I am an avid gamer and a MT. I'm only 30 and already my wrists get sore periodically. I'm wondering if there is a point where I will be disabled due to transcribing and difficulties with their hands and what to do to prevent it. TIA for replies
