You have to be able to retain knowledge.
You have to know how to reserach effectively.
You have to be able to use deductive reasoning.
You have to have confidence in your decisions and not constantly "need assurance."
You have to be able to separate sounds in your head that are both internal and from multiple external forces.
Some of these can be taught, some are innate, some take years to develop, some either you got it or you don't.

make 3 cpl... if you are really a physician, please stick to that, you'll make more money seeing one patient than we can edit reports in 12 hours! Furthermore, the jobs even that are classified as IC make you stick to a schedule! So, there's no coming and going between patients, okay?!

I've worked for a hospital at home and they don't all have those restrictions. If I didn't know better, I'd swear is was one of those situations where they're looking for a reason to be able to offshore- can't find anybody to do the job. No noise, music, TV? How do you work at home and eliminate those things?

I've been doing this a long, long time...
I used to make $70,000 and up a year and did so for most of the late 80s and 90s (one girl used to make six figures a year working 7 days a week!) Because we were making more money than the supervisors and Medical Records Directors in hospitals, they began to switch to transcription services which were sprouting up all over the place. Plus AAMT came into existence and even though in the beginning it claimed it was to fight for transcriptionists (although assured us it was NOT a union), they eventually morphed into an organization that was more management friendly. They developed the "guidelines" and the 65-char line. That was the beginning of the end for those high-end wages. Then all those mickey mouse transcription schools popped up, and now outsourcing overseas. YES, we're complaining.
I think it's the stupidest thing on TV in a long time.

Not me. But I've waited for this for a long time.
Been through the daily grind for over 20 years. At one point I even had all four of my kids in different schools, having to drop them off before leaving for work. I don't miss it one bit. I still laugh when I'm lying on the couch in my pajamas reading the morning paper while all of the commuters are fighting for a place in line at Dunkin Donuts.
But with 4 kids, 3 still at home, my house has always been like Grand Central Station. I have never been able to complain about the quiet for sure. Hubby works nights so is here during the day and starting early afternoon there is an endless stream of hungry teenagers in and out as well as messy little grandkids. I don't remember the last time that I was completely alone for more than an hour. I wouldn't know what to do.
Unfortunately I don't. I've had it for a long time in the closet. nm

Best post I've read in a long time.
I tend to go back and forth with my feelings about this profession. In the mornings I am glad I do not have to get up, get ready and go to an office. Many times in the evening, after I have during the day and still have work to do, I feel like stuffing it all. Many times I am disheartened when I get my paycheck, but I am glad to be getting one, while my sister worries about getting laid off from her manufacturing job. MT has advantages and disadvantages.

I totally get everything you say, and I don't argue with any of it.
But I work for a national that has had the same errors in the same normals for YEARS, so we're talking probably thousands of charts by now. I can't fix years of apathy. If I was in charge, you betcha I would.

Honestly, I think the first thing you have to do is give up.
Once you give up, and leave the dishes in the sink, and the bathroom unmopped, and figure out what's really important for peace in your soul, that helps. My son won't give 2 hoots in 10 years about whether the bathroom was clean, or the sink clear. He wll remember my smile, my time, my kindness.

Sorry, I know it sounds negative, but I think your money would be better spent learning something that will actually get you some gainful employment. Have you read this board? Even experienced MTs of 20 and 30 years are having trouble making ends meet with two and/or three MT jobs, let alone just finding a job, and then the pay just keeps getting worse and worse, lower and lower. Why put yourself through that?
Honestly, no I would not do it. I've been home with my kids
for 17 years and would not change a thing. Check local hospitals in your area, maybe they have at-home MTs. I do whatever it took to be able to stay home. This is just me though, others may feel differently.

I learned MORE doing QA than doing MT, and it's still easier. You have the benefit of the rest of the chart to help you fill in blanks. Trust, it's not a scary job. If I could make a decent wage at my company I'd absolutely go back to QA.
I completely agree. I don't care how long it's been a 'tradition'.
It's pure senseless slaughter in the purest form. Maybe they should have "running of the Spaniards" and see how they like it! 
Honestly, it takes time.
It took me almost 6 months to completely adjust to 3rd shift. I have been on 3rd shift now for 7 years and could not imagine ever working any other shift. Just a few suggestions that took me a bit to figure out. Call your family and friends and tell them not to call you during the daytime. If you have a cell phone, use that as an emergency number for emergencies only, i.e. kids, family, etc. Turn off the ringer on the home phone completely or turn on music and a fan or whatever to drown out the noise. Room darkening blinds will also help filter out the light. Good luck.

There's nothing we can do about offshoring right now, so don't let it sway your decision too much. Besides, if offshoring ruins all the jobs, it'll be ALL the jobs, including your current one. I'd go with the national if I were you! There are a lot of good jobs out there, despite what people say. You deserve it.
Time to do something completely different
You've turned completely inward. Time to look outward. Walk outside your four walls and walk away from cyberspace - they'll still be there when you come back. Talk face to face with people. Go for a walk to somewhere completely different each day. Volunteer somewhere in your community. Befriend and be helpful to your neighbors. Sitting in the dark online 18 hours a day is a habit that can't be good for anybody - face it and change your behavior, or you will inevitably be forced out of your hideyhole into the world anyway. You can either embrace, choose and take charge of changes, or wait until you have no choice.
This may sound a little weird, but try using feng shui to rearrange your apartment - it can make a difference. Just moving my work space to a different part of the room worked for me (my productivity greatly improved). Good luck, and don't let this beat you.
Honestly, I send my kids to public school. They've never had a belly ache either.

If they send you the post paid envelopes, stuff everything that was sent to you back into that and mail it. Perhaps write not interested across the application or what have you. It will cost them money for that being sent back to them and they probably will take you off their future mailing lists in the future. :D

I can tell you that interviews work both ways, but that was rude. I have to say though, recruiters and MTSOs can be rude too. I have had that.
As a rule, I have found that those doing the hiring want an immediate answer and personally, I don't always have one!

I had a problem with this for a long, long time sm
I have always worked days, like from 6-3. Over the last few years, it didn't matter how much sleep I got, I became real groggy between 7 and 11. Really shoots the day. Talked to my doctor and he said my blood pressure pills were the culprit but he refused to change me to another brand or dosage since I have multiple aneurysms (2 in the brain). My BP has been stable for a long time and he wants to "keep it on the low side". I tried taking them before I went to bed instead of early in the morning, but then I had headaches all day. So, I am changing to a night shift for a few months so I can sleep when those pills kick in and so far it is working pretty good. I stay mostly awake during my shift and die when I hit the bed from 6 am to 10 am, then I lay down again later in the afternoon for 2-3 hours. I still get 6-7 hours of sleep, it's just split up during the day, plus I am mostly awake now when I sit down to type. I don't have to deal with the heat in my office, either. It tends to warm up real fast in here with the south sun on the house and 2 pc's running all day, even with the air conditioner on.
Way back when, a long, long time
ago and in a galaxy far, far away, I had my own accounts also and some years cleared $75,000. Yes it can be done, but you need to have your own accounts. Also lots of delivery, and other duties involved. I work for a large national now and make much less, but I got tired of accountants, having to deal with hardware problems, deadlines, driving deliveries, printing, printers, etc. So I decided to simplify my taxes and stay home and just type. Don't have to worry about computers either, because the company will just send me a new one.

I love/loved MTing. However, things have changed so much during these years. The job definitely gets easier; don't have to look up much, can decipher ESLs much easier, in other words, you get pretty comfortable with things and you have confidence in yourself. The more experience you have the easier the job, but....
I actually made more money 10 years ago!! We didn't have speech recognition and you actually got paid for headers/footers, demographics, carbon copies, etc., you got paid for what you did fairly; today, I am not so sure.
You will feel burned out at times, but that passes and you find you like your job again.

Face lift, that is, in fact 2 before and definitely would do again, thinking of tweaking now. The strange thing about those are the first time you look in the mirror afterwards you do not recognize the person you see there, even though you know it is you. I think the lifestyle is less invasive and from what I have seen, not as good as facelift.

Well, I've heard it all...
Well, I'm struggling through a dictation and finally figured out the problem.. The doctor is driving while dictating (quality is wobbly and he is by nature a VERY fast dictator) and his wife/girlfriend/friend/significant other is on her cell phone talking just as loud and fast as he is... It's terrible.. yak-yak-yak-yak-yak. She hasn't slowed down one bit to even take a breath.. 4 minute dictation.. has so far taken 30 minutes! OUCH!!!!! Why do I put myself through this??

...about eight months ago and it was pretty user friendly, I'd say, based on the tour of it they gave me. Do you mind if I ask you the per-line rate they're going to charge you? When I talked to one of their reps last year, the per-line rate they quoted me was pretty darn high, which is the reason I didn't go with it, but if they've lowered their per line rate a bit, I would consider using it. Thanks, and please let me know anything else you find out about IntraScript. I'll keep an eye on your post and replies. 
I've actually never heard that myself, but
I wouldn't think you would be any less fertile than you were prior to this pregnancy. Be sure if you do miscarry to keep in touch with your doctor and when the bleeding has stopped that you go in for an ultrasound to be sure it is complete. I did not pass everything during my first miscarriage and ended up with an infection and was on antibiotics for a couple of weeks. An infection could obviously cause problems with fertility if left untreated. After both of my miscarriages, I was told to wait three months before trying again, but I ended up having a D&C in the office for the unexpelled contents the first time and the second time I opted for a D&C in the hospital under sedation because I found out the pregnancy was not viable and my first miscarriage was very painful - a lot worse than menstrual cramps. The three month wait could have been because I had the D&Cs. I am so sorry to hear someone else is going through it. ((((Hugs))))
Okay, now I've heard it all
I could be mistaken, but I think I am transcribing a doctor who is breast feeding while she dictates. I can hear the baby (sounds like a newborn), and her soothing little comments, and then a definite almost like an "ouch" sound, but she keeps trying to talk through the pain.

I leave it on the majority of the time, but on the weekends or when I know I won't be working I will turn it off to let it rest (so to speak). I don't know why but I just can't leave it on forever, which is why once or twice a week I turn it off.
