Hmmm.....I read somewhere about seeing if you can play the files in Windows Media Player....sm

because Media Player downloads proper codec "on-demand" and this is apparently needed to play .wav files in Express Scribe (read this at their website).  Can you play any other types of files?

Windows Media Player
Does anyone know if it is possible to use a pedal with the Windows media player? I am doing some test reports and have been unable to use my pedal to start, stop, and rewind. Without the pedal, this will take forever!
Will the file play in Windows Media or QT? ..nm

Try this plug-in for Windows Media Player. sm
It looks like the .dvf file is a Sony recorder file. You don't say why the file needs to be converted to .dss and I'm not even sure that you can because .dss is proprietary to Olympus. Maybe this plug-in will be of some help to you. Let us know.
Can you get the file to your desktop to see if Media Player will play it, just so you know

Windows Media Player and Foot Pedal

Does anyone have a simple solution to hooking up a VEC footpedal so that it works with Windows Media Player to stop and start?  The VEC hooks into a USB port on the computer and has 3 pedals, rewind, forward, and type.

Just as a note, Windows Media player will NOT work with a footpedal.

Unless there's some voodoo magic out there that I'm not aware of.

Flashdrive question versus Windows Media Player
There are 32 files on this flashdrive.  I use a Stop/Start pedal.  In using my pedal, I have done all of the files but four.  Four of the 32 files show a length of about one hour each, but you cannot hear anything.  However, if you open this up in Windows Media Player, you can hear him talking.  What do I need to do about this?  I can't type using Windows Media without my pedal, and why do you think I can't hear just four of the 32 files with my Start Stop pedal?  This is a new thing for me and please pardon my ignorance, but I could really use your advice as soon as possible.  You can email me and thank you kindly.  Lisa

Help with taking test with media player
Hi there....I have to take a test using Windows Media Player and I can't figure out how to type in Word and still be able to use the keyboard keys (no foot pedal yet).  If anyone could help it would be much appreciated.
Media Player/DSS format questions

This subject brings me to the problem I am having right now.  I have a WAV pedal program which my doctor and I just started using.  Going fine.  Then all of a sudden he changes his format and sent me a file with a WMA and it came up in the Media Player.  Oh, I saved the attachment in MY WAV files, but also have an archive file set up also.  It did not come up in MY WAV files, but thank goodness did automatically come up in the archive part in the Media Player, and I could not get it to work with my pedal either, so literally had to listen and stop, re-listen, and type, etc.  It took me 3 1/2 hours to do a 20 minute job!  I get so frustrated as I am not IS literate.  Now he has told me that he will be sending everything in DSS format and that I should go to a particular website and download so that I can get into it. Well he did not give me a model number, so cannot seem to get a download without it.  But this also makes me wonder where and how I should be setting up things to find the documents and where/how to save them.  Any tips are appreciated.  TIA

I would reverse the media player back
and see if that corrects the problem. If so, you might either decide you don't need the upgrade or contact Windows about a fix...

Make sure your plug is all the way in - sometimes it looks like it is but isn't seated.

Just do a restore to the day before you did the upgrade - or if you are uncomfortable with this uninstall the software and test your headphones...

just a thought.
No, you cannot use a foot pedal with Media Player.
Try downloading Express Scribe; it's free.
If it is a windows media audio file just .....sm
drag it into your open gear player box. You should be able to play the windows media file there, and use your foot pedal.

you need to change your properties of those file types to open with ES and not media player. sm
go to your folders by start, explore. find where you saved those files to. once you find a file, right click on it and click on properties. under the general tab, look down 3 lines to where it says open with and i bet it says media player. click change, find the express scribe program. make sure you check that box under there that says always use this program to open this type of file. then you can either right click again, click open with, select express scribe and it will automatically load in ES or you can hit the load button on ES, find where the file is saved, select and it loads it. if this doesn't work, email me.
You cannot adjust the speed in Win Media Player. Download Express Scribe free NM

Reinstalled WAV Player, Now Won't Play DSS

Hi,

I have always been able to play DSS files using my WAV Pedal (WAVPedal 5). I just wiped my computer clean and renistalled all of my programs, including the WAV Pedal 5. Now it will not open and play DSS files.  Any help?  Thanks,

Dave

You will need wav player software on your PC for your pedal to play
files.  You can download Express Scribe for free and it works really well.  Then you will need your clients to use digital recorders to record their dictation.  The dictation can then be saved to a jump drive, disk, etc. or uploaded to an FTP site that you maintain and you will then be able to download the files from the FTP site to your PC and transcribe them.
What are you using to play the files? sm
There might be a setting to select the foot pedal and/or the type of files.
yes. they are used to play wav files on your --sm
digital wav player, so they can be called wav pedals too. Although some programs require a specific type of pedal because of the way they are wired. USB port is pretty universal and the simplest, but some programs like the serial port ones so it is wired as to left pedal, right pedal, fast forward, reverse, etc. but they are essentially the same thing.
DSS files won't play

I am totally new to the at home transcription profession.  I found someone to type for but when she sent me the file, .dss, it didn't play on Express Scribe.  Now, I have been on their forums and tried ALL of the suggestions and nothing worked.  Apparently it has something to do with the way the new version of ES interacts with XP or something.  So I found a DSS Player Lite at Olympus and it played the file, but ofcourse there wasn't any foot controls or speed, et cetera.  I was just wondering if there are possibly other, preferablly free or cheap, software programs that I can use to play these DSS files.  I have another person I will be transcribing for as well but I guess she uses a different file format so I am hoping that it will play with ES. I am just so frustrated and don't know what to do to get started making some money.  Can anybody help me??

Thanks!!

It should play .sri files. Have you tried doing this??? sm
Go into settings, then file types, and put a mark next to .sri files.

Give that a try and let me know if it works. HTH!
Can I play files dictated in DVI on my PC?

I was recently approached by a local doctor and asked if I would like to type for them.  The doctor's office uses a DVI system but they did not know anything else including what equipment I would need to play the files.  I was wondering if I could purchase software that would alow me to dial into their DVI system with my computer instead of using a separate DVI machine.

Thanks,
Mariah

They probably all play .wav files. The USB pedal is

dont buy vista - certain voice files do not play

Bytescribe .wavplayer will play the DSS files from Olympus.

My digital voice player converts files to be --sm
able to be played. it sounds like your voice player does not. Maybe either you or she needs to save the file as a wav file first, prior to playing. either that, or try downloading the express scribe player, which is free, and try to play it with that. If that plays, then it is your voice player which is not compatible with the files she is sending you. good luck.
Best player for poor quality audio files?
I'm on a new account using primarily .wav and .dss files -- I can use whatever player I want and am currently using Express Scribe (just because its free!) -- but these files are not the best quality, and I wish I had more controls available to try to tweak them a bit. If anyone has experience with any other audio player software that they think is better than Express Scribe, would you let me know?  Thanks much.
Does anyone know how to make Express Scribe default player for .wav files? TIA.....nm

A WAV pedal controls playback of voice files. You need a software program through which to play the

The term "WAV pedal" has become a generic term. The software that you use will determine the file type(s) that you are able to play on your computer. You use either a pedal or hot keys (Fkeys) to control that playback. As stated below, Express Scribe is one such software program and it is free. It can be found by clicking on the link below.

RE: Using stop -start program, but cnanot get true speech files to play - any one with any ides it w

would greatly appeciate any advice as to why the start stop program will place the vox files but not the true speech even Iafter I told to associat wiht true speech and so on... The time flickers like it wantt to open the file but it never opens....  THe the error comes up file is too smlal to be a valid sound file or missing file"  Actually the start stop will place the Regan Speech sample audio  that is a true speech file so I would think it could play true speech files

But she had someone read her the files. Not

Converting voice files to digital files

I have a Voice Solutions dictation system that will happily convert DS4000 voice files to digital when they are downloaded (wave files). However, it will not recognize any other files for conversion. I had a physician download .WAM files from his DS-30 and my dictation system would not convert it. Anyone have any suggestions?  I would greatly appreciate any input.

Thanks!!!

Did you save files in .rtf format? The files need to be
as a Word document or it won't count them. Could be the problem.

Might be the fact too that you are using XP Media and not XP Home or XP Pro
