1. Watch the sales ads.
2. Clip coupons and if you find an item on sale and have a coupon on it you'll make out like a bandit. For example, just last week I got a 48 ounce bottle of Heinz ketchup for 19 cents! It was on sale for 99 cents and I had a 40 cents off coupon, which was doubled. That made the name brand product cheaper than the generic.
3. Find out from your favorite grocery store which day they mark down their meats and items nearing expiration. Most of them do this on either Wednesday or Thursday. The one store I go to the most does this on Thursday, so I shop there on Thursday morning and get the meats that still look good to put into the freezer. I've bought $15 roasts for $5-6 many times, as well as steaks for less than 1/2 price.
4. Produce prices have gotten real high. I've had better success buying fresher as well as cheaper produce at some local roadside produce stands than at the grocery store. If you have a farmers market nearby they will usually also help you save money.
5. For most food items when I cook I make enough to have for at least 1 more meal and freeze it. For example, if I make baked chicken then I cook enough chicken for 2 meals. If I make lasagna then I bake it in small ready to freeze containers and have it ready to go in the future. Things like this save time and money.
6. When it comes to the gas station the best thing to do is try to consolidate trips as much as possible. Instead of taking kid Suzie to Mary's house, then later drop Peter off at Bob's house, tell them every evening that the car will leave the driveway at "x" time the next day and anyone who wants to go somewhere reasonable has to be ready then, and stick to it. You'll also tell them the pick up time. Make sure they swap time with friends - i.e. don't find yourself trapped with taking your child over to another kid's house all of the time - make sure that other kid also comes to yours as well so you're not the one doing the driving all of the time.
7. Dollar stores are great for things like band-aids, candles, Saran Wrap, gift wrap, and all types of things.
Good luck to you!
