Here's how I do it: SM

Say I have Dr Smith and Dr Jones. I have a "template" (but NOT a normal.dot thing, that's just what I CALL it). It's an autocorrect entry that looks like this: OPSMIT

PREOPERATIVE DIAGNOSIS:*

POSTOPERATIVE DIAGNOSIS:*

PROCEDURE:*

SURGEON: JOHN SMITH, M.D.

ANESTHESIA: *General

DRAINS: None.

ESTIMATED BLOOD LOSS: *

FLUID REPLACEMENT: *

COMPLICATIONS: None.

PROCEDURE: The patient was brought to the operating room and placed on the table *

Mastisol and Steri-Strips were applied. One gram Ancef was given for perioperative prophylaxis. The * was covered with a sterile bandage, and the patient was taken to the recovery room in stable condition.

Every * is a place I use alt+Z to jump to, and I just type from there. You have to know your stuff to use a system like this, but boy does it work. I do four major hospitals. My templates (the real MSWord templates) are in the proper font and margins.

I short-cut every single phrase that I can.

I've been doing it this way for years and years, no matter what account I'm working on. I also have a blank "template" that doesn't have all that stuff filled in. You wouldn't believe how you can cut the time it takes to type a report. This "system" was given to me by another MT a long time ago and I still use it everywhere I work.
