First off, you need an array of programs to keep computer clean.  I have Spybot, Spywareblaster, AdAware, McAfee Avert, AVG Antivirus - all free programs.

Please be sure that any program you download is not installing a firewall if you already have one.  Two firewalls should never run at the same time.  I have Norton because I am required to (don't ask) by a company for whom I work.

For registry, I use CC Cleaner, Registry Mechanic (NOTE:  PLEASE BE VERY SURE WHEN DELETING ANYTHING FROM REGISTRY; IF IN DOUBT, DO NOT DO IT.  In CC Cleaner, I normally just clean up Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer and things under System, never under Advanced.)  AND ALWAYS CREATE A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT just in case of problems.

There is a site I use www.bleepingcomputers.com that has tutorials and such about everything computer issues.

This link is a step-by-step tutorial to help in cleaning your computer.  If you choose, you can do everything they ask (be warned that the anti-virus scans take a long time and do it when you will not need computer) and then post a log so they can analyze and advise on what is your problem if still any after running all the programs.  (NOTE:  I never have; I feel funny about posting a log about every program on my computer to a web site.)  Other than that, I have used this for years and never had a problem.  I think it's satisfactory, but below I will give you other programs to use after you've done this.

This link takes you to a database of programs that could be running on your computer and find out if they should be allowed to.

This link is to AVG Antivirus free edition and for SUPERantispyware, which are really good.  They caught a lot of things that other antispyware did not.

Good Luck, have patience!  It is a process, let me tell you, but once you get it down, it's a piece of cake.  And do Microsoft updates, of course.
