is a numbers game. You just have to keep promoting your business over and over and over again. Work on promotion for 1-2 hours per day so you don't get burned out on it.
There are many tasps out there. I see them on the banners on this board all the time. Some are basically pay as you go. The one I have is less than $100 per month with unlimited uploading and downloading. All the doc needs is a recorder or you can use a tasp with a call in system. I think the call in systems are high $ though. Nobody answer my post last week why the call in rates were so high! If you go to affiliates on the left there are tasps on there.
To me the tasps really remove the need for a middle man taking a 60% cut like the big nationals.

Has anyone ever tried those multilevel marketing businesses such as Fortune Hi-Tech marketing...sm
My friend wants me to sign up...she is making about $2000 a month now but working quite hard at it. My husband claims it is like a pyramid. I just don't know. I wondered if any of you have had personal experience with this type venture. TIA

Marketing
I do brochures, flyers and postcards. I mail out using a list I have. I also have accounts in several of the large medical buildings by hospitals and I will often go from floor to floor giving out my information. I have gotten a 20 to 25% reply so it works. Since I have been in this for 15 to 20 years now a lot more comes from word of mouth but when I started out I just sent out information about my service.
E-mail me if you want more specifics. Patti

Marketing Ideas
Hi, I am in the process of searching for my own accounts as well. may I ask what sort of information you put into your brochure? Also, I have built a website and have it being hosted by my ISP, but how do you go about having it searchable through Yahoo and Google? I am just curious, as I need to expand my searchability. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks. Kathy
Need advice on marketing.
Got a call from a doctor. I have a questionnaire that I use to ask questions. Then I gave him the rate over the phone and included a proposal and brochure which I faxed to his office.
I did this before and nothing happened. I'm worried I gave out information prematurely. Am I doing this right?
Converting DSS to WAV
I heard there are free tols on the internet that can convert a DSS files to a WAV file. Does anyone know where to find a good one? I just used the DSS software that came with my handheld to do it, and it went from a 2 MB DSS file to a 35 MB WAV file, which is unwieldy. Am I supposed to now zip the WAV file? How do you do that?
Thanks a lot.
Dave
Converting to Wav
Unfortunately, wav files are incredibly large compared to their dss counterparts. 35MB for a wav file is quite common, and there is not much that can be done about that. Once converted to wav, however, you can then convert it again to either mp3 or wma (windows media audio), both of which are much smaller files and are compatible with most software out there.

Running out of marketing ideas. sm
I've sent letters and brochures. Is there any other way to market this business? Don't have a lot of time for cold calls. If I send the same stuff over and over, I'm afraid they'll throw it in the trash and I will not have gotten their attention. Any suggestions are appreciated.

See message - marketing own accounts
Make up a brochure/flyer -- very simple stating what you will offer and for what price and send out or take around. Be prepared to do tapes or digital. Lots of info on here about that. Be acceptable to pick up and deiver or send via FTP. Do mass mailings to MD's, DO's chiropractors, oral surgeons, vet's, etc. or concentrate in the area where you want the account and do it every 4-6 weeks. Network via local chapters of MT's, MA's what you have available. But be prepared to know it can take several months to get a bite and sometimes longer. You need to be in the right place at the right time. If hospitals have their employee newspaper see if you can place an ad. But it sometimes takes mass marketing to get that first account. Good luck.

Converting tapes to FTP - help please
Can someone help me. I'm starting to get a lot of tapes in, and I want to start getting some help and outsource some of this, but I haven't the first clue on how to convert tapes to an FTP site. I've tried talking to computer whizzes, but they lose me after a couple of seconds. So I thought I would try this avenue ... have any MTs out there been able to take mini tapes or standard cassette tapes and convert them to an FTP site to be downloaded anywhere in the country for someone else to transcribe?? I do not know the first thing about it, and I would really appreciate any input.
Please email me. Thanks!
Converting dss.gxe files to dss
Does anyone know if this is possible? I'm trying to get my WAV pedal to play these Gear Export files. The extension is dss.gxe and I think the gxe is preventing my WAV pedal from being able to open them. Thanks in advance!
Let me know how you do with converting from Smartype to IT
I tried and failed miserably. I'd love to hear your experiences with converting to it. Maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance.
converting minutes
As a starting point, I would say maybe 10 minutes an hour. Straight transcription should be more, but, for example, where I work, we have access to the EMR and are expected to do a lot of clerical work to get the job done. Longer reports really work in our favor, but the short ones kill me production-wise. What it all will come down to in the end is how much are you able to make an hour.
Any MTSO's out there willing to give marketing advice?
I have been transcribing for 6 years and want to get my own accounts. What is the best way to do this? Any info would be great! Thanks
Amway, Quixstar & Network Marketing
First let me tell you that there is nothing wrong with Network Marketing and that it's a wonderful business to be in. The best advice I can give is first of all, research several companies and see what their compensation plans are. I would NOT sign up based on someone feeding me a bunch of hype. Also, look for a product that you can believe in. Next, check out the company. Just as it is done here, everyone is checking out all the companies before they get in. Make sure that the company is founded and operated on sound ethics and business practices. As for spending a lot of money on books, tapes and seminars.....ALL of us should be doing that on a DAILY basis. It's called personal development and that is the best thing in the world you can do for yourself. So to sum it up and because of limited space to write here....tell them to GO FOR IT!!! If you have any questions go ahead and email me and I can go into much more detail to help. Take care and have a blessed day!
I wasn't putting down Network Marketing...sm
Simply stating where the money in Quixtar comes from. Sure, you get a bonus check every month if you sell products, but the majority of the money comes from the tools. Tapes that are made from Quixtar seminars are sold and pushed on people. If you don't get on the tool program, they don't want to help you - because they won't make money if you don't buy the tools.
it all started with the VR software marketing personnel. SM
This craze started about 10 years ago and kicked into full force within the past five years or less. Someone selling the software convinced the physician practices, hospital personnel that they could save a fortune on their transcription costs. Little did they know it takes a Transcriptionist to pretty much retype the report produced by VR, and then sometimes QA/editor to check it. Now that's what I call a savings people. Now the VR systems are being utilized by our ILPs, who try to correct the errors in VR when they do not have a firm grasp on the English language...We're talking double disaster here. Let the doctors and hospital administrators think they are saving bundles on their transcription costs. How very sad and ignorant on their part.
Converting files to other formats
I'd like some help.
I have a file sent to me which was supposed to be sent in text format. Instead, the tech apparently sent it as an ACL file.
I'm supposed to send it on, but need to convert it first in text format. Can anybody coach me? I'm feeling rather "techno-challenged".
Thx.
I have had trouble converting to Word as well.
When I started with WP 5.1 I was inhouse, so I had some help in learning the ropes. With Word I am on my own. I have ordered some training materials, but have little time to use them. Kimberly, as far as interruptions go, it is all a trade-off. You have interruptions inhouse too. Do everything you can think of to increase production when you are working. Make a decision whether it is more important to you right now to draw a bigger paycheck or spend time with your child, and then do not beat yourself to death for your decision. No one can make this decision for you, nor should they judge you for the decision you make.
question on converting a disk - please help
I have a CD that I am supposed to transcribe. It came to me in as a .cda format, and it won't play whatsoever. Not on my laptop, not on my CD player, nothing. I see online that there are ways to convert the cda to an mp3, but I'm not sure which are hoaxes/bogus and which are for real.
Does anyone know how to do a conversion of cda to mp3? Please help. Thanks so much
Has anyone had trouble converting documents
Word 2000. These seem to be putting a .doc extension after all of my documents now. Anyone have a fix? I have an account that I can't use the .doc extension, and when I back that extension off, I get a message saying "this document may not be usable". Is this a Vista issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As you pick up your accounts and back-up accounts, just do a good job and meet expectations or better.
The only drawback about your own accounts, it leaves little time to clock out and have your own life. If you can find someone else to work the accounts while you rake in the money, that is all the better.
Converting Instant Text to SpeedType
A friend loaned me an trial version of SpeedType. I have tried to get my Instant Text glossaries to convert over and it will not separate the keyword from the entry. The SpeedType then assigned the entries keywords of 5001, 5002, etc. Is there anyway I can fix this?
Converting a "tape" client to digital (sm)
Can someone point me in the direction to find information on purchasing equipment for a doctor to try digital dictation for the first time? He's currently using tapes and is interested in digital dictation.
I have express scribe and a wav pedal, I realize I'll need to get FTP set up on my webspace but I'll need to purchase him the handheld, etc. and I'm really not sure what the best setup is. Being only one person, I can't afford thousands of $ but would like to be able to offer that type of service.

Can someone help me in converting my SH entries to the Chartscript expander? SM
I thought SH would work with Chartscript, but the tech guy says that their Chartscript Expander and all the abbreviations reside on the hospital's server, and my abbreviations are on my own PC which is why it won't work. Can anybody help get around this somehow or convert my entries and how to load into Chartscript? The tech guy says he doesn't know anything about SH. Thank you.

Converting C-Phone to keyboard versus foot pedal rewinding and fast-forwarding
Hi there:
I have some as-yet-undiagnosed neuropathy that began with my eighth injection of inteferon for hepatitis C. I initially had severe numbness from the waist down (felt like tourniquets on my legs) that is now controlled somewhat with high-dose Neurontin, but now I have moderate to severe pain in the lower back and buttocks if I sit for very long. I'm on a mild narcotic/analgesic, but I still have pain and discomfort long before it is time to take the next dose. I'm currently only earning about 60-80% of my normal income.
My question is this: Does anyone out there know of a way to convert the foot pedal functions of the C-phone to a keyboard, other than having an integrated system, which the hospital I work for does not have?
There must be some way for handicapped people, like those in a wheelchair, to do medical transcription without the use of a foot pedal, but my guess is that you would have to do away with the Dictaphone dication system completely, which I doubt my employer would do unless I threatened some sort of legal action.
Any info on converting a dictaphone 2-prong headset adaptor? I need to find a noise cancelling head
If anyone knows where I can find this, please let me know. thanks
To get own clients or not....
I have thought about getting my own clients, but working for a company, if I want time off, I can easily arrange that and know there will be co-workers to cover the accts. If I get sick, the company will find someone to cover the accts. I don't have to worry about the billing, tech support, trouble-shooting, complaints. Maybe someday I will chose to give up what life I have and get my own clients, but for now I like being an IC for a company. This way, I am a great employee and an even better boss.
My clients...
Consist of clinics. They all get 48-hour turnaround time guaranteed, and anything STAT (a TRUE emergent STAT) they need, it's done at no extra charge. Radiology gets four to eight-hour turnaround for obvious reasons. The rest of the clinics don't need a 24-hour turnaround time because let's face it, their staff basically sit on it, and I'm not going to break my neck so they can just sit on it....
Clients
Hello! I'm new to the board but not to MT. I've been working from home for my own clients for 10 years. I wondered if others who do the same have ever experienced a situation I just encountered and wondered what your thoughts were. I had a client whom I transcribed for for two years, then he moved and started back up in his practice and called me and I've worked for him for an additional year in that new practice. When I noticed recently that I hadn't received his dictation as usual, I questioned it, i.e. was he on vacation, did they lose a tape or what? The receptionist said he must not have dictated yet. I found this off as he usually dictates each day he's in the office. A week had gone by w/o work so I called and asked and the same girl said she'd have his wife (who works in the office) call me because she didn't know why there wasn't work, etc. At this point I got suspicious and had asked the recep. if there was something going on I should know about. She said they're working on this new software and maybe they just got behind. New software? I talked to his wife and "I" mentioned this software. She didn't. I asked if this affected my workload and she said 'yeah, probably quite a bit.' I asked if she would please let me know AHEAD of time if they were going to make this transition so I could prepare and plan (she had just made it sound like they were just looking into it and kind of testing it out, NOT that they'd by any means started using it full-time). She said oh certainly they would let me know ahead of time. Then I pressed a little more and finally she told me he'd already been using it for his patients and when I asked if I should replace his work, she said yeah, probably because he really seems to like it and will probably use it. I don't know what the software is but I hate it just because it took a big client from me. But I"m also wondering if this is common practice for a physician just to outright not tell an MT that they weren't going to use their services any more. I mean, not only did they not give me notice beforehand, but they hedged on admitting it when I came right out and asked. I find this incredibly rude and inconsiderate, especially when I've been a faithful MT for them for three years. I"m just dumbfounded at this behavior. Has anyone experienced this? So now that leaves me in the lurch with bills to pay with an already tight budget (hubby in college, two kids, high heat bills, blah, blah, etc.) and me looking for work to fill in the gap. Sorry I ranted and rambled. I'm just really upset by this and wondered if anybody experienced being treated this way and/or knows what this software might be and if it poses a threat to any of us. Thanks so much!
Own clients
This has been discussed many times with many different opinions/ideas. You might do a search as there was quite a heated debate on this about two months ago. I have a brochure that I send out with my card. For those I am very interested in I do stop by in person or if anyone calls inquiring I stop by in person. You have to be prepared with equipment to do tapes or digital and some may inquire about a call in system. You may have to pick up and deliver, provide your own paper. Be prepared to do any type accounts. Your rate will depend on the area you are in and can be anywhere from 11 to 16 cpl from what people say on this board. You have to be prepared to have some back up if you get very sick or have an accident and for vacations. You will not get any benefits, will not getpaid when the doctor takes a month off to go to Spain. It will be a tough go at first until you esablish a rapport with the office staff. But I like it and have been doing it for 18 years. Just did a report and have made 4K more this year than I did last year so things are looking up for me. Good luck. Patti
One of my clients for whom I have done only
tapes for has given me a CD to load onto my computer. I haven't put it on yet but I'm wondering if you all can help. It's an Olympus CD and looks like it's for .wav files which is what he intends. He says I should be able to load this onto my computer and then after that, he can email me voice files. Now, is this correct and what will I need to have in order to play and transcribe his voice files? I have a Bytescribe pedal. Please tell me I won't have to buy a different pedal for this! Thanks in advance for any help!
want to get own clients
Hi Everyone,
I have over 2 years’ experience in medical transcription and really want to get my own client(s). I feel that I am finally ready to take that leap. The question I have is – how do you go about talking to potential clients? What is the best way? Mailings, calling, just going in? Should I make business cards? Unfortunately all of my doctors offices (family, ob/gyn) husband's GI doc and daughter's pediatrician are all EMR. Ugh. So that's no help.
I’m not really afraid of what to charge or contracts, the rest is what has me stressed the most. Should I buy a program like DocShuttle or will they basically tell me what they want? I have been with nationals and small MTSOs alike and just am not sure how to go about everything myself.
You can feel free to e-mail me with any advice also.
I really appreciate the suggestions/help!!!
Getting own clients
I am currently transcribing for GI docs who are using the EMR system, I love it. There is barely any paper for me to handle, I fax everything right from their system to the referring physicians, once in a while I will get a physician who doesn't have a fax and so I need to mail. The final copy goes right into their system. I am currently working from home through my business. They had the equipment installed at my house, fortunately for me, I was with them for four years before I went on maternity leave and have been doing it from home for the past two years.
I also transcribe for ENT docs in my area, before I went on maternity leave I asked them to use my digital phone in system (really didn't expect them to since they were 'set in their ways' but they agreed).
As far as getting new clients, I would get some business cards printed out, and some fliers stating what equipment you will use, i.e. tapes, digital; will you be dropping the finished work off, and also turn-around-time. Then if it were me, I would take these to local doctors, speak with the office manager and offer your services, may be you can start off by offering to cover vacations (I know how hard it is to get coverage for yourself on vacation. You might have to start small and work your way up, but at least it is a start.
Well that is all I can think of, I hope this is helpful to you. Good luck!!
Best way to get clients? sm
I want to market my service in my area. I have gone to offices before in the past, but they sometimes get annoyed. I have also done mailings and get no response. Is there another way to get the OM's attention that maybe I overlooked? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Some clients won't go there
Some doctors have such rotten dictating habits they know running their reports through ASR will result in utter garbage; they have TAT to meet and they know if they take the time to have those reports extensively edited post ASR its just an extra step. Some clients know for them it will be a time and money waster; it is the MTSOs that are pushing for all ASR, not the clients. Many hospitals have tried ASR inhouse and end up scrapping it and going back to MTs. Its a lot like outsourcing in that many people are on the bandwagon, but there'll always be some that refuse to ride it.
Clients have the right to not have an
MT transcribing that reports if that MT continually makes mistakes. Not talking about the ones QA catches, but the reports that are sent straight through without QA and they catch the mistakes on their end and have to send it back. The client I am assigned at my MTSO has said that certain mistakes will not be tolerated and those that make those will not work on their account. They have the right to pull the account from the MTSO if their wishes are not followed by the MTSO.
getting own clients
Does anyone have a sample letter that I can look at to try to get my own accounts? I would really appreciate the help if there is anyone willing. I just need something to get an idea of what to cover in a letter just to get my foot in the door.
Thanks in advance.
I don't have any of my own clients...sm
so I have never had this problem. They said you were no longer transcribing his letters. Does that mean you are still transcribing other types of reports for him or is that the only type of report you did for him?
If the secretary called you before and asked questions about "How often ARE you coming to get work" or something to that effect, then it leads me to believe he was not happy with you for some reason. Sounds like he found someone else to do his work. He could have found someone to do it cheaper, who knows? I hate to hear you lost this client. I know money is tight.
