Hard to believe sonography & imaging tech jobs are

I look on some of the job websites for my state, and there appear to be a lot more jobs than MT jobs. And the pay is better, too - around $42-52K.

Mortuaries, nahhh. I also think the whole funeral industry is a ripoff. Nursing is overworked and underpaid for what they have to know, (much like MT). Even if I wanted a teaching credential (which I don't), I'd have a lot more than 2 years of college ahead of me, especially considering all the courses I didn't take in high school, especially math. One of my sisters got a teaching credential (mainly as a fallback job, though she only taught a few elementary summer-school programs), and she had to have her master's in education in order to be credentialled.

What other sorts of things might an MT do well at? Also, an MT who is close to 60, so doesn't have 8 years to go to night school, and can't afford expensive tuition? I don't think I'm meticulous and detail-oriented enough to be a lab or pharmacy assistant, and the old back won't take kindly to a job that involves a lot of standing all day. Being equally up and down is best for me, and sitting is 2nd-best. Standing is the worst.

I've explored coding, but after being an MT, I just don't trust any clerical jobs in healthcare anymore. I'm sure they'll find a way to automate or offshore coding, just as they've done with MT. If I'm going to endure several years of night school, I want something that is more recession proof and can't be offshored as easily.

Interestingly, right now there are quite a few State MT jobs available near where I live, (such as for state mental hospitals and the prison system), but with all the layoffs, budget messes and furloughs, there's no way I'm going to take a State job and then sweat it every July when they can't balance the budget.

It's all sooo frustrating! When I fell into MT back in 1974, it was a perfect fit, after I'd bounced from office job to office job for many years before that. I like typing, and like working with words. (Sigh - if only I had the next 'Harry Potter'-like novel inside my head, waiting to be written.......)

LVN(LPN) or imaging tech. sm
I don't know anything about medical assistant, but the LVN (licensed vocational nurse) program can be obtained at a local community college in sometimes only 12 months. The only bad thing is, almost the only jobs a new LVN/LPN can get any more are in nursing homes, as most of the patient care is now done by CNAs (aides) and most hospitals require RNs now, which is at least a three-year program at community college.

You might want to look into becoming an imaging technician, which is also a community college program, I think it takes two years but not sure--and be trained and licensed to perform scans, IVPs, radiology, etc.
How about imaging tech? nm
.....
Your husband tech guys are not the bible. You have go give access for tech sm
support to get onto your computer. Just sit there and watch everything they do. If you still feel uncomfortable do not take the job.
imaging

(Single) contiguous (axial) image was obtained from base of the skull to the vertex without (intravenous) IV contrast.

Not really sure about the word single and axial in this sentence.

imaging

They can do a single axial image but it is not as effective as doing contiguous axial images.

Agree. You could be a Surgical Tech or Respiratory Therapy or a Med. Tech. nm

New Radiology Imaging Book
Hello, I use this new book I got and love it. Radiology Imaging Words and Phrases Second Edition by Health Professions Institute. It is newer than the Stedman's (it is 1995 edition) so it has the newer terms it may not have. This one came out this year, a month or two ago. I just got it a few weeks ago. It is 750 pages and is 36.00. I am totally glad I bought it.
Diagnostic Imaging / Radiology

It's pretty much all I've ever done, although I did work at a medical school for a while and typed research papers and such. BORRRIIINNNNG!

I like radiology because it spans almost every field (except maybe psychology LOL). No matter what part of the body it is, when you want to find out what's wrong, you send them to x-ray.

Question regarding Radiology Imaging Training
Hi Everyone.  I am an acute-care MT and have 30 years exp.  I am wanting to expand my field on typing Imaging reports as there are quite a few jobs in my area that pay hourly salary for this.  I used to have a hospital hourly salary until they outsourced.  There are 2 hospitals in my area that need Imaging MT.  I actually have typed some imaging reports that are thrown into our pool as I took a position with the outsource company that our hospital contracted too but I do not like working by line with no spaces being counted.  Makes it hard to make decent money for years of exp.   These two hospitals do have Imaging positions open and they pay by hour.   I was wondering what schools would have courses that I could take via commute to learn Radiology/Imaging.   My friend that I used to work with got back into doing radiology reports and now gets paid by the hour again.  Myself and one other ex-coworker have applied for an additional  position open in Imaging but we have not even had a call.   I am quick to learn and have Radiology books, but I would not feel that comfortable in going these reports until I had some additional schooling.  There are a few schools in my area that have transcription, but I do not need the whole course.  I listened to a report for my friend one day and I understood every word the doctor said.  I know I could do it with time, but evidently my resume is lacking in this department and really no hospital will give you a chance unless you have that experience in this Imaging field.  These days there is not many places that will give you a chance  on the job training unless you have been to school.  They just do not have the time with the busy pace these days.   Any info would be helpful.  Even if I did the extra shooling there is no chance they would call.  These positions are for home MT and I have been a home MT now for 20 of those 30 years and I have worked from all over the country.  Any information would be helpful for checking into.  Thanks
Radiology is getting hit big time. Stand alone imaging centers especially.
Radiologists and lawyers usually mix about as well as oil and water. But radiology's near-term future could depend on the efforts of an Alabama attorney who is fighting a one-man battle to overturn legislation that could devastate the independent imaging center industry.

Jim Zeigler is an elder care attorney and self-described Republican activist who has taken issue with the Deficit Reduction Act (DRA) of 2005, legislation enacted earlier this year that makes cuts to a wide range of federal government services. In radiology, the legislation specifically cuts $2.8 billion in Medicare payments for imaging services conducted in out-of-hospital settings.

Mr. Zeigler's beef is with the changes the DRA has made to the way Medicaid calculates how people can qualify for federal nursing home assistance. He might be just another gadfly if it weren't for one fatal flaw in the legislation -- a key difference in the versions of the bills passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives wasn't properly reconciled, as required by the U.S. Constitution.

We're featuring a Q&A interview with Mr. Zeigler in our Imaging Center Digital Community, in which he explains his objections to the DRA and what the radiology community can do to help. Read all about it by going to http://www.auntminnie.com/index.asp?Sec=sup&Sub=imc&Pag=dis&ItemId=70190&wf=770.

If it rains hard, the wind blows hard and there are trees
nearby, it snows heavily it will mess up the signal.  The speed is not constant, sometimes as slow as dial-up, but at least still connected.  Many companies will not allow satellite.
So, you think it is okay for hard-working MTs to earn 7-8 cpl for their hard work?? nm

I did 3 jobs for a while about 3 years ago, you burn out quick, I was doing 3 MT jobs though...after
10 months I cut down to 2 as I don't like to have all my eggs in one basket.  But I am considering going down to 1 in September for my sanity, its a good steady job so financally it should not be an issue.  I have 2 right but have not worked the 1 in about 3 weeks due to some problems at their end, supposed to learn a VA account but not sure if I want to pursue it right now or not, they are waiting to hear from me at this point. I still have a lot going on with chemo, etc. so am mulling things over.  But if you have a full-time day job, then I would just go with 1 part-time MT job at night, unless 1 is during the week, and the other weekends only, then of course you will be working 7 days a week, very tiring I know.  I have been working 7 days a week for 3 years now but I do slack off now and then of course to recharge and get sleep etc. But burnout happens fast and I doubt you want to lose your day job so be careful. Good luck.
Two jobs very common, 3 jobs not unheard of.

Yup! Not only short jobs, but also jobs from
extremely difficult dictators, bad sound files, jobs that need lots of ADT info added, and anything else that is not "easy" to do. I also questioned them about this and was told the same - they do not allow cherrypicking. Definitely not true!
Med-Tech

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone had any info on Med-Tech in Lousiana. I didn't see any good or bad in the archives. Thanks!

Jen

Med-Tech

Hi Bobbie,

Thanks for your input. Their schedule didn't work for me anyway-they were going to hire me without even doing an interview! I hope you had better luck in whatever you chose next.

Did you like being a vet tech? I'd like
to hear more about it, if you don't mind.
oh yes, but the tech guy did all that for me.
Can't really help you much in that way, but you can get it online, I think that's what he did.  It has junk mail files, suspected junk mail files, and then of course my "wanted" email file.  I'm not very computer "savvy" so that's why I needed help.  But it looks to me like you can just go to SpamBayes and load it. I know it has a "wizard" to load it.  Good luck because this spam thing has gotten way out of hand.  Should be a law against it!  Maybe someone else has heard of it, maybe try the technical help board if you can't get it to work.  I'm sorry that I can't help much more than that.  But yes, in answer to your question, you can set up your email as you would like.  Good luck, and hope this helps.
Hey, you tech MT's, help please.

I got a LinkSys router at Wal-Mart and with tech help, I got my Vista computer and other computer going at the same time; however, I unplugged the cable from the phone jack one night, as it was storming, and could not get both computers back on line after that.  I actually have returned the router and doing without for now.

I would like your experiences and any help that you could give me. I have used cable router before, but not for phone line -- DSL.  Thanks.

I would think the tech could do it. At my
former job they were able to switch them from Medscribe to DQS.
Must say, as former vet tech myself, that

need tech help

maybe posted this on wrong board earlier:

I have a daughter vet in another state that would like me to transcribe her work.  Is there is way to do this via digital and/or a call-in dictation system without going through an MTSO?  Any suggestions? I'd sure love to be able to do that for her!

Need tech help, anyone!
Help!  I have my expansions in Word 2003 autoaorrect, called MSO1033.acl file.  I wanted to transport this file to another computer using Word 2007.  I got it over to the other computer, have installed it in the proper directory, and have renamed the Word 2003 file so it is called MSO.acl, which is what Word 2007 calls it.  Yet, when I open Word 2007 on the destination computer, my expansions are not there.  The file is showing in the directory, verified by my last date of change before I moved it, and is more than three times the size of a normal .acl file.  Can anyone tell me what boat I'm missing here?  Thanks, appreciate it.
What about an x-ray tech? Seems like there

MT becoming RAD TECH

I have heard MTs switching over to nursing, coding/billing, but has anyone else considered training for Radiology Technology.  I was considering this but found out the course work is very intense for 2-3 years while working in the hospital as an intern.  Can't do it now but still considering it in the future.  I hear the demand is only growing in this field and can't see it being outsourced.

Med-Tech, Mediscript in LA

Any info on these companies would be appreciate-I haven't found very much yet. Thanks!

Jen

TRS, SoftScript, Med-Tech

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has worked for any of these companies. I'm down to making my final choice. Thanks!

Tech support will help you set up a
shortcut on your desktop to access your ACO (shortcut) file if you ask them.
Re: tech support
I don't know if it gets back to our supervisors, but I wish it would get back to theirs! What I do now is tell the "real winner" support person that I have to hang up suddenly. Then, I call right back. I suddenly get a different one who is a whiz and very helpful. It's worth the hang-up and call back unless you have to wait 45 minutes for the next "helpful tech." ;-)
Help on tech board please!

Cannot open hyperlinks.  Popups open as blank white pages.  Can't find help on Microsoft.  HELP!!!
Check with tech there. sm
I don't remember if I asked or not, but I did import my shorthand files into ExText, so I didn't have to start from scratch.

Good luck! I hope you're as happy with Amphion as I am!
Cardiac tech here....

Not sure what you mean by weird heart murmur.  That should have been checked at least with echocardiogram.  I'm thinking mitral valve prolapse which can cause chest pain and exercise symptoms but is generally benign.

At  your age and being female it is highly unlikely it is cardiac disease.  They would probably do an EKG while you're having the pain and check enzymes.

Chest pain is very very common and often is not cardiac.  It's cause is unclear, sometimes costochondritis, sometimes GI, sometimes just unknown.

You still need to see a physician very soon to determine if NSAIDs or other simple meds (Protonix) are the answer or more tests are needed.

A4 Tech antiRSI
I've done the MS natural and also the Kinesis but I keep coming back to this thing. It has pyramid shaped keys that seem to be a little bit closer together than a normal keyboard. It only costs around $7 at Dealsonic. I should probably pick up another one for back up.
med-tech company
Has anyone heard of this company?  It is out of Marietta,Georgia.  Any information would be appreciated!  Trying to pick up some part time work.
Vet tech/transcriptionist
That's interesting...I used to be a vet tech in the '80s and got tired of not being able to explain to the animals why I was causing pain. I also like more focused work. Loved radiology so now radiology Transcriptionist for 15 years. So you and I had flip-flopped career paths...good luck on this new endeavor as a veterinary assistant.

Histology Tech Job

Does anybody know anything about this job, i.e., ins and outs, good and bad, know anyone who has done it, etc?  I am trying to find a "better way" than MT but no clue as to which direction to go.  I also wondered about surgical scrub tech job.  Willing to do a 1-year certificate school but don't know about 2 years of school.  Any info would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

A4 Tech keyboards

Hi, I just ordered one of these keyboards.  Supposedly they will increase  your production and had really great reviews.  I ordered the 2680RP model which is wireless keyboard and mouse.  Just wondering if anyone else has used these and what they thought.  Mine is supposed to be here today.  Can't wait to try it out.  Any info about them would be really appreciated.

Need tech help with DocQScribe

I just started working for a service that uses DocQScribe and for another service as well and use the same foot pedal for both.  However, I noticed that when I log into DocQScribe and start to play the dictation file, it will start to play and then suddenly jump back to the beginning of the dictation.  The footpedal that I currently use is an Infinity IN-USB-1.  Or is DocQScribe the type of program that tends to conflict with other programs?

TIA

phlebotomy & ekg tech

HI i live in NJ and i am taking a course to become a certified ekg tech and phlebotomist i was just wondering if any one knows about what the salary for this position is and how in demand it is. Also do u need any other educational requirements?

Thanks

EKG tech and phlebotomist?
Is that one training program and one job? I've never heard of the two going together. Unless you are dealing with dye/contrast or adenosine infusions but then those are usually IV and I don't think phlebotomists do IVs, at least not here in the NW.
Tech/video

I am posting a tech (nonwork related) question on the gab board ... any help will be appreciated!

Maybe a technical board would be another great addition to this site.    Thanks.

Tech stuff- Need FTP help. sm
I have a client that needs to log on via FTP. She is not able to do so, and so I think it's the firewall.

Is there any way to log on via FTP without changing firewall settings? Would resetting the firewalls help or her shutting the firewall down and then restarting after she logs in help?

Even when she uses Internet Explorer to log in via FTP, she gets a message and it doesn't allow her to log in.

I will probably need some sort of software to get in and fix stuff like that. If anyone has recommendations, it would be appreciated.
Tech Support

I had a problem back in January. I have AT&T. I finally ended up calling the help desk for AT&T (They are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a  week.)  He told me to do the following (and it worked). What I was trying to do was put in an application on line, and the message kept coming up that I was not able to do that.)

Turn off or unplug moden., Turn off computer.  Wait about 3 minutes. Turn on modem and wait until at least 3 lights are on solidly (cannot be flashing).  The lights on the modem are Power, Ethernet, DIFFUSE SLOWING, Internet and Activity. I hope this helps. But the person i spoke to at the help desk was very helpful.
