Grrr...cherrypickers
I am so SICK of cherrypicking. I just got a HUGE job in my queue by the worst author on my account, which, conveniently, had been skipped by everybody else working today, leaving me, apparently the only person with a conscience, to slog through this crap. I just don't understand the mindset of the cherrypicker. I would be wracked with guilt if I took all the good work and left the bad for everyone else. If anyone reading this is a cherrypicker, you are a thief. You are a selfish, pathetic, disgusting thief, and I hope someday you get what's coming to you.

 We had a very persistent ex-nurse at my old job who wanted to do transcription. She kept pestering my boss for an interview and testing. When it came to the testing part, she found out it was not so easy and finally quit pestering our department for a job.

I tried calling HP and they recommended Word Office Suite 2007 (another $400) - but I think I read somewhere that 2007 is not compatible... ?? and that Transcriptionists are going with Word 2003 ??

I am getting to where I just can't stand the THOUGHT of doing this at all for 11 more years (unless I hit the lotto or by some other miracle my mortgage gets paid). I am terribly burned out and broke, to boot. There will probably be no MT industry in a lot less than 11 years anyway, so what am I so worried about? The decision will be made for me. There HAS to be a better way to pay the bills.
The standard line the office gives me -grrr
Whenever I run out of work, I call the office. It's a waste of time. They have a standard answer which is "umm, umm, let me check, um, can you check back later in an hour?" Which later became "um, um, let me check, um can you check back in two hours?" If there is no work, can they not just say it's slow or there will likely not be much work today? I find this insulting. I never know how to respond since I can't really say to them "Liar, liar...." Lol. What would a better response be? I have stopped calling now. It's frustrating!

Seriously though, it is your account and you have every right to demand better quality, and if she cannot provide that for you, then maybe you need to reconsider her as an IC. You absolutely have to be very careful when hiring those who just cannot take criticism the right way. Those are the worst because they are prideful MTs and they will never get it right because they don't think they have an issue! Trust me, I LIVE with one of those.
Get some back bone and start demanding better work or tell her you will replace her. See if she doesn't slow down then! Good luck. Put the whip on her - that should do the trick.

After readign my OP again, I spelled the words incorrectly -sm
in rush to send post. I mainly use Stedman's Radiology Words and lunotriquetral interosseous ligament is listed--w/o hyphen since I do radiology but just looked in the Ortho book and it is also listed there.

difference in abbr and word spelled out

I think the difference here is impacted by 2 things:
1. If you are spelling the word out fully, then it looks dumb to join them:

But if you are writing it in ShortHand as we generally do in medical documents, I think it is abundantly clear to write:

2. Also we're talking about medical/scientific measure. When I had my transcription business the editorial policy concerning such was this:
If you are transcribing a medical/scientific measurement you join the value and the unit of measure:

If you are transcribing OTHER than medical measurement, you write it out:
She has two houses locally. Of her three children, two are grown.
And Never:
She has 2 houses locally. Of her 3 children, 2 are grown.
No. Measurements are in numerals, all others are written out. That was OUR editorial policy. Others have different policies, and whatever policy is established is how it needs to be done.

I received a note from QA that I'd spelled the patient's name wrong
THROUGHOUT the report. Since I don't keep a copy of the chart on my computer anymore, I can't go back and look at it to see what I did. I vaguely remember though, 2 days later, that I had a patient that was not on the patient list so I spelled phonetically, marked it for QA that this was throughouit the report and sent it on its way. I questioned the person telling me about the mistake as to whether it was spelled right in the demographics and a couple more questions trying to clear my confusion about what could have happened. This is certainly not something that is my norm, for sure. She replied once, but after asking another question and telling her that I'm really not trying to give her a hard time over this, she has not responded again. Is it possible that someone QA'd my report, fixed the patient's name in the demographics but didn't look at the report body. Perhaps I should have flagged every place that it is mentioned as well? "The patient" certainly would have been a sure thing here but not allowed.
So now that I've ranted a little more over this I'll let it go (hopefully) but I just can't believe I'd have done this. I even use "uj" in my Expander and change it to the patient's name with every report, just so I don't make a mistake remembering how to spell some of the names. I guess that's the biggest reason why I'm having a hard time with this one, because I do the same think on EVERY report, uj=whatever the patient's name is as per the demographics on the patient. AAARRRGGGHHHH. It sure does bug me.

some doctors dont think that is trivial. They expect doctor's name to be spelled right
When you are working for someone across the world, it is hard to find the name of that particular doctor.
She is right to put a blank for this.
I had an account that demanded the physician's name to be spelled correctly. They think of it as an insult.
abbreviations
On anything that I want expanded and is also used as an abbreviation, I put an x at the end. Such as CHF, I have it as chf and will capitalize and then chfx will spell out congestive heart failure without a problem. I do this for all my abbreviations. Hope this helps.

I was thinking you could benefit from using a popular website for medical abbreviations. The sites are:
1) www.medilexicon.com
2) www.pharma-lexicon.com
You would enter the abbreviation and it will give you the definition. This is, of course, in addition, to your usual research methods using the search engine such as www.google.com

I was taught years ago never to abbreviate in a diagnosis. I also would spell it out and put the abbreviation in parentheses as this is his direct dictation and that's how I've always done it. The BOS may disagree but never got called on it. I once wrote a physician a sticky note to please not dictate his diagnoses in abbreviations as they may be misinterpreted. He was nasty about it, but it is a very dangerous thing to do.

I think it is best not to use abbreviations as much as possible.
In my opinion, I would prefer it typed "okay", but every company has their own opinion. If she is the boss, do it her way.

I use Barb Grow's vocabulary that I bought from her about 7 years ago. I don't have contact info for her now though, and I don't know if she still offers her vocabulary. I'd be lost without it. It makes much more sense than what the original Smartype or Stedmans came up with in their vocabularies. Her vocabulary is in the vcb format that goes into Smartype, ready to use.

backing up abbreviations
I'd like to make a backup copy of all my abbreviations on Word Expander. I use Bayscribe for my work. Does anybody know how I can go about backing these up? I'm concerned that all it would take would be a virus or something funky to happen to my PC, and I'd lose all those abbreviations. I have stored over 2,000 my own abbreviations for a total of over 60,000 characters and would really regret all that work if something happened. Thanks.
